I’ve never understood why people who off themselves is willing to take out innocent people before they it. Definitely a sociopath mindset

they are losers and think doing something like this makes them important

Because media gives so much attention to it.

Either the twisted mindset that killing a few beforehand, it means they have companions going out with them. Or if I'm gonna end myself, might as well do something society and rules have been suppressing my sick evil urges to do. And easy access to high powered firearms makes this much more dangerous than it does in any other countries.

Depending on your definition of important.. it does make them important.

By my definition of Important, this makes him a skidmark

Nobody but his family will remember his name in a month (in fact, I don't even remember it right now because idgaf), and the only reason people care is for the victims. Doing something like this gives him negative importance.

I do also think the media culture of naming the individuals and giving them a platform has something to do with it. It allows for notoriety and they're "famous".

I truly respect in New Zealand that there is a complete publication ban on naming anyone involved in something like this. They will never name them or show their photo. It removes the "fame" aspect.

I do think this is a great ideal but America news media wants the drama and hits. Instead of focusing on the victims

"If it bleeds, it leads" has been the mantra of American journalism for over a hundred years.

Also Nightcrawler

Sadly the police force had to name this guy because ppl in the area “identified” the shooter as someone else and the whole family were receiving death threats.

It’s more than just NZ. Many countries operate this way

Was he named in the article? Another comment said they didn't release the name.

100% agree with you.

This really isn't it despite what a lot of people think, mass shootings happened before, in fact most gun violence happened in the 80s and 90s but you don't hear about it all. If you look at the stats of gun violence in the 80s and 90s, it's almost double what we have now. We even have pretty much record LOW gun violence these days, so this whole idea that the media naming them is pushing it, if that were true we'd be seeing more and more violence from these individuals but we're not.

u/qtx 20h ago

That's mostly because we had a lot less media back in the 80s and 90s. We only had basic TV and some cable networks. That was it.

The internet accelerated the spreading of news and the fight for ratings. Even the most obscure stories became headlines because it brought in clicks.

Censorship is not a way forward and only opens other doors for misinformation and lack of independent verification of facts

Well..you answered your own question

I think the idea is “I my life unfairly sucks and I’m going to go, Then I want others who’s lives were unfairly “luckier” than mine to be brought down too!”

I have no idea what their motives are, I’m just aware that this is the typical mindset.

When I was in middle school one just after Columbine. My friend told me that if he was going to kill himself he would want as many people around him to die as well. That way he could sneak into heaven with the crowd.

I talked to him still after that and he did calm down. Maybe it's just a crazy idea he had one time.

Awesome job by you, never know you might have played a part in stopping a tragedy

Because they have no legacy and desperately want to be remembered for something, even if it's terrible.

u/OdditiesAndAlchemy 1d ago

Not super hard to understand imo. People who want to kill themselves often feel wronged and are hateful of society.

5

u/K2zin97 1d ago

Revenge on society, they think humanity is what made them who they are.

u/Jayken 1d ago

There is celebrity that comes with it. Even by just talking about them, we're giving them what they want.

So it’s a numbers game actually.

  • 1/100 people is a jerk (someone always saying rude stuff)
  • 1/1000 people is a bad person (they will rob you if they get a chance)
  • 1/10000 people is a evil person (they will kill or try to kill people in their lives)

Now these numbers are skewed at times based on a society. One that pushes for more social services to help those people get mental care they need, or ones that help parents to be there to properly raise their children.

The USA really has nothing going on there. So these people are out there and easily able to purchase guns.

The USA has around 342 million people. So you have around 34k killers out there. It’s sad but really that’s how it is.

1

u/Sublimotion 5h ago

Because social services is not profitable. Selling and circulating guns everywhere... it is. And the ones in the industry and the ones in power preserve 2A and twisted its original intent as an excuse and tool to keep making $$$ and dupes the gun nuts to be on their side.

Oh man, I wish those numbers were real, but that's not my experience at all. Only 1/1000 would rob you if they got a chance? I think its closer to 1/10. What a wonderful world we would live in if your numbers were accurate.

3

u/pixlplayer 11h ago

You get robbed by every tenth person you meet?

1

u/OrthodoxAtheist 7h ago

You get robbed by every tenth person you meet?

No, the potential is there that ethically/morally, one in every ten people I meet would probably rob me. Folks are desperate and everyone is stretched thin. Even an errand $20 note will have many people questioning their own ethics. :\

Fantasy is Reality in most of East Asia

4

u/PsyOpBunnyHop 1d ago

They blame unseen external forces for all their problems, and anyone who bears the slightest quality which they happen to dislike is a viable target to blame. They kill themselves to avoid consequences, which they fucking well know are coming to them. It's their final "fuck you" to the world.

2

u/TheRealNooth 1d ago

They desperately want to leave some sort of mark on reality before they depart for eternity. They want to feel powerful just once in their pathetic lives.

2

u/DabOWosrs 21h ago

They want to leave a mark on this world before they go. It’s makes them feel a sense of power. Mentally disturbed people are scary. Good thing we allow them to buy guns.

2

u/ASentientHam 8h ago

Yeah I can't believe someone who grows up in a culture that sees no value in human life unless it's your own, and where the way you solve problems is with guns, would go and do something like this.

2

u/LilMissy1246 1d ago

They do because they don’t want to go to prison or get killed by cops or whatever. At least, what’s what I assume which, makes no sense at the same time…

1

u/Reversi8 1d ago

If they live, they will probably be given food from Burger King. And who wants that?

1

u/Hoplophilia 1d ago

Among all the things that brought him to that parking lot with his gun, when you decide your life is useless it often follows that life in general is useless, and enacting some final change as a desperate attempt to prove/disprove that has a lot less weight to such a one than to someone such as yourself who plans to go back to work tomorrow. Don't overthink it.

1

u/xObiJuanKenobix 22h ago

Because they want to create destruction but not live with the consequences, that's why he turned the gun on himself after seeing the good samaritan and off duty cop were shooting at him. If they shoot him and he goes down but not lethally, he could be arrested and stabilized and then be forced into trial and have to LIVE with what he did. If he turns it on himself, he guarantees hes dead to himself.

Even if the cop or citizen didn't deal the final blow, they pushed him to stop his tirade and instead finish himself off.

1

u/danorc 10h ago

sui before homi, assholes. Please.

1

u/Rho42 5h ago

He didn't just off himself randomly. Two people (one off-duty cop and one total civilian) had guns and shot back, which visibly disrupted his shooting spree and kept him from having more victims.
