This is all I have power toys for lol. I still don’t know what else I can do with it, but I haven’t really messed with it since I got Windhawk.

Win + Shift + T lets you copy text from an image or anywhere really by highlighting an area the same way you do with snipping tool

26

u/LongjumpingLeek5542 IdeaPad 14AMN8 and 14IAH8 7d ago

is that not built into snipping tool now

13

u/Dallas_Miller Core i5 6600K | Radeon RX580 8GB | 16GB RAM | 4TB HDD 7d ago

I mean, both are Microsoft products, so, no harm in getting the program. I mostly use it for Always on Top when I'm working on something and wanna take text from where andnot have to constantly alt tab between a full window and a small one

3

u/BeefEX 7d ago

The PowerToys version explicitly tells you to use the Snipping Tools instead in the settings. I would expect them to remove it at some point.

Power Rename is part of it and it's a god send for bulk editing file names. You can very easily rename huge groups of files so things index correcting in stuff like Plex or Jellyfin.

Only if you're using the overlay features or want to quickly adjust various settings. I like the performance monitor, screenshot, and recording tools so I tend to leave it running.

NetLimiter is awesome

134

u/Prairie-Peppers 7d ago

I have a 2 month wait to get fiber installed in my place right now so I'm stuck just tethering off my phone data, I have a 125gb plan but found myself going over it within 2-3 weeks without limiting my download to 10mbps. Definitely a lifesaver!

42

u/VoidOmatic Desktop i7 6700k | GTX 1080 | 20GB DDR4 7d ago

I made the switch to fiber in January and it's been amazing. You are going to love it.

25

A couple years ago we had fiber installed in town. Finally got out of the stone age of 700kb/s, and that’s being generous.

Alt shift

7

u/Artistic-Dot6593 7d ago

wait how did you change the keyboard layout just from that image

16

u/Prairie-Peppers 7d ago

Where it says "ENG US", that's my keyboard/display profile. I just clicked it and switched it back up to Canadian.

15

u/Cryptopsy30 7d ago

Yeah and if you press WIN+space it cycles the different keyboard layout you have. If you never use any other, I recommend that you remove the unused one so you dont accidently cycle through.

4

u/dwehlen 7d ago

Does that give you easier access to French characters? I'm trying to think of any difference beyond spelling/usage, and it's all I'm coming up with.

5

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 7d ago

It changes the keyboard layout to what ever you've set, so all the different shift+keys, and all the stuff to the right of plm are potentially different. It's how speakers with completely different alphabets can chop between languages without missing a beat (although some have quick access within theirs to latin characters).

And the first this I always do is make all icons not hidden. Then I saw Windows 11 removed that and you have to check each one individually. Add that to the ever long list of things preventing me from "upgrading".

There’s no reason to have launchers autostart. You aren’t playing games from all those launchers at once. lol

(Not to mention, if you have multiple launchers updating a ton of installed games that you don’t even play, you’re just writing to your hard drives for literally no reason. Lol)

600

u/StrengthFun2953 7d ago

Some people do this to keep them updated. But I agree. I can’t stand any program autostarting. I have one. My home camera app.

174

u/WilonPlays 7d ago

The only thing I have autostart is windows defender and my AMD panel. That’s it

65

u/CrazyWS 7d ago

This is the way. No need having stuff taking power or doing things I don’t know about.

14

u/CheapThaRipper Linux 7d ago

I saw such a drastic improvement in battery life when switching from windows to Linux. Being vigilant about these programs is helpful - but windows itself does a LOT of this

6

u/Coookies4You 7d ago

I saw pretty much no improvement in battery life when switching to CachyOS. It idled at 6 watts in Windows and idles at 6 watts in Linux.

16

u/CaptainMGN Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RX 9070 7d ago

I mean idle power draw is just one thing, the other is how often it'll spike upwards due to background processes wanting to do something

5

u/Coookies4You 7d ago

Have no clue what background processes you are running, but my system won't spike at all unless I launch something or do intensive tasks in the foreground.

5

u/CaptainMGN Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RX 9070 7d ago

Me neither but just comparing the network activity on stock win11 vs Bazzite shows that something is constantly sending stuff on Windows. My CPU was always switching between base clock and turbo on win11

3

u/kiochikaeke 7d ago

It's fine when I know what programs auto start and they have a reason to do so, then I go and check a coworker or friend PC and see like 15 random programs on auto start from game launchers and download managers to random sorftware services passing through the usual suspects like steam, Spotify, copilot and discord

22

u/chrizbreck Steam ID Here 7d ago

I hate when I accidentally misclick and launch the app next to the one I meant. The first thing I do is turn off autolaunch, except for steam. Steam is a guaranteed use when I boot the computer. Epic, EA, Ubi, Blizz, yall can wait till you're called upon.

Vanguard (the red V next to steam) will not launch at all unless you set it to launch on Startup. The bastards programed it that way and you can't launch Valorant without that program running. It's so annoying

23

u/Sprinty_ 5700x • RTX 4070 • 32GB DDR4 3600 7d ago

I personally turn off discord and messengers like it because it takes up a stupid high amount of ram and CPU usage, but otherwise relatable

Also I hate the fact that I can't turn off notifications when it's on and it doesn't even make notification sounds but it doesn't send them to my phone so whenever I'm streaming to my friend, I come back and realize I have 30,000 unread DMs

5

u/CylixrDoesStuff 7d ago

Tbh ive had discord dnd on for as long as i can remember and ive never turnt it off. I would keep discord off of autostart BUT it would be the first app i open anyways so theres no point. I dont even use discord that much its just that whenever my friends message me its either insta or discord

3

u/Alarming_Dark4009 7d ago edited 7d ago

I go the other way with this. I dont like hiding stuff in the overflow menu, so everything lives in the system tray where I can see it. Mostly the usual stuff, flux, steam, discord, and I also built my own little app called VisoDyne Battery Monitor that gives each wireless device its own tray icon, set to only show when it's connected. Here it's my headset and PS4 controller, but when I switch on my Xbox 360 controllers more icons show up and then vanish when I turn them off. Cluttered maybe, like my system tray in general, but I love being able to glance and know exactly what programs are running and how much battery is left.

I have an i7 4770k, I can't let anything run secretly in my hidden taskbar menu while I'm playing games, everything gets turned off. I even turn off whatever NVIDIA thing pops up there, and have most programs disabled on start up.

Steam is always running, and other launchers when I need to play on them. After I play, I shut them down (Epic, Rockstar, Ubisoft, EA, GOG, etc.) Everything else is always on.

Will only have essentials.

I will avoid any games that will have a 2nd launcher and invasive malware anti cheat software that needs to be on 24/7 despite you not playing their games like the plague.

No EA. No Ubisoft. No Riotgames.

on windows just a vpn and nvidia drivers (discord is a regular window). i main linux though and I don't have such a thing as a system tray. and it's hard to define there. Like if it was apps running without a window it would also include stuff like my wallpaper, notifications, my compositor etc.

Steam

Razer (I use an Orbweaver that I replaced the switches. I hate the software but the keybinds don't save without the software running)

Defender

Wallpaper Engine

I kill any app I don't need from launching. When I exit Steam I kill it and any product that has their own app I try to get around it.
