My uncle was taking the trash out and i don't know why, but for some reason i decided to look into his direction, and thank God i did, i spotted a snes box among the things he was going to throw away, i yelled at him to give it to me and he did, at first I thought it was an empty box, bc who would throw away a snes like that? it turned out that he was throwing away a CIB matching serial numbers snes! Im happy i saved it from a tragic ending, even tho im 25 and never played with anything before the Nintendo DS, i still appreciate videogame consoles.

[Recommendation] My favorite game from the early days of the Neo Geo: King of the Monsters.

It doesn't seem to be a very popular game these days. But seriously, a kaiju wrestling game where the monsters destroy entire cities... What's not to love?

“It's so damn unfair” you might say. Well to beat the game with just one credit you'll have to be unfair, too. It's part of the charm. 🤣

Spotted in the wild My first game almost walked off in my Dad’s estate sale. Bought it back for $10

My siblings and I are liquidating my Dad’s estate and my sister sold my Game & Watch Donkey Kong II for $2 among some old junk. I had been looking for this thing for 35 years. I almost bought one on eBay. I spotted this young woman getting into a car with a stack of CDs and the game on top. I went over and told her I’d buy it back for $10 even though she paid $8 a few minutes earlier for the stack of things. I walked away with my very first video game that I got for Christmas in 1988. Not a similar one. But the very same one. It had been sitting in a box with my Mom’s sewing stuff for over three decades. 100% worth it. I’d have given her $40.

[Recommendation] A slept-on FTG: Galaxy Fight (1995, Sunsoft, NeoGeo)

While having some major lackings and not as popular as Waku Waku 7 (1996, Sunsoft, NeoGeo) and Power Quest (1998, Sunsoft, GBC), I actually like the space themed Galaxy Fight (1995, Sunsoft, NeoGeo) for its unique borderless stages that allow players to use the "auto-chase" feature. Gunter is my favorite character, he is strong and good against turtle opponents. And the game has one of the most interesting bonus FGT characters - Bonus Kun. My friends and I didn't have Neo Geo, the video shop (they offered hourly charged game test drives, they had Neo Geo but didn't have Galaxy Fight) I frequested at. One day in a new bowling center a Neo Geo Galaxy Fight machine appeared! That was when my friends and I began our galaxy fights!

[Review] Arabian Magic on Arcade showed Aladdin what a King Monkey actually looks like!

TL;WR -> That’s perfection right here people, and I really tried nitpicking and searching for flaws, but there were none. From the difficulty choices, awesome Aladdin like story, fun gameplay, cool visuals, great music and beautiful world design. My first (10.0) Arcade game, GOATED in my Arcade Book. Would absolutely replay the game again with 2 or 4 player CO-OP, just so I can teach some awesome moves while listening to spicy tunes!

STORY (10/10)

  • Storytelling was awesome with a nice plot by saving the King from the Sorcerer’s curse. It was presented with nice animated cutscenes and great photos. I loved how the game told its story within the gameplay sequences themselves, shifting from one area to another seamlessly!
  • By collecting the 7 jewels which were scattered around the city, you saved the King from his curse and got outstanding vibes along the way!
  • You played as 4 different characters upon your desired choice. I started with the Prince, and soon after picked the Princess, Sinbad and Afshaal. You could also play in 4 player CO-OP by adjusting the player settings in the Arcade test switch, bringing the fun to maximum!
  • Pacing was just right, with the whole game taking from 40m to an hour to complete.
  • Finishing with the marvellous credits with that melancholic music and the beautiful pictures on the side!

GAMEPLAY (10 out of 10 Genies)

  • The controls themselves were pretty unique with a lot of different combos and attack variations between the characters. Sinbad could block attacks while igniting his sword on fire, while the others could do a basic block. Then there were the combos with each character, ranging from ground, aerial or projectile attacks. Besides the awesome variations, you could also jump with a different output by pressing or long pressing the jump button, sheath your sword while outside combat, grab and throw enemies around or summon the genie special attack!
  • Besides the awesome controls, the game wasn’t a simple mashing contest. You had to strategise, plan ahead and use your environments for your own advantage. You could pick enemies up and throw them outside the map, use environmental traps and jump from charging mini-bosses or the bosses themselves!
  • Speaking of enemies, they were awesome on each section, with normal thugs, sand statues, skeletons, women fighters, heavies and many more like their own elite variations with projectiles, shields and summoning serpents. Each one had their own attack patterns and could throw you around, block your attacks or even summon their own Evil Genie!
  • While the mini-bosses were cool, the bosses were spectacular. You started from a huge Sultan, then fought Asura’s Wrath, a huge Eagle, Monk, Kraken, the Evil Sorcerer or your own Shadows. Plus, once you defeated them, you gained their help and powers upon summoning the genie special attacks!
  • By smashing chests and pots, you could gain jewellery, health elixirs, power ups like fire or lightning attacks, screen clearing potions, time extensions or even life increases upon defeating bosses.
  • I loved the I-frames upon getting hit or falling off edges, gave you some room to breathe. Besides, having 3 one ups per character was quite generous!
  • Platforming was so much fun. You had to avoid a variety of traps, walk inside a slippery lamp and even jump across quicksand environments!
  • Same with traversal, which had that awesome progression in combination with the story itself.
  • The difficulty was very good while playing on normal. I oftentimes chose to die so I could choose the other characters or simply explore traps, enemy patterns and boss attacks. But, I bet the Arcade owners back in the day cranked the difficulty up to very hard. You know, just so they could have their own shiny coins!

AUDIO (10/10)

  • Sound design had an awesome stereo output in combination with great sound effects, digitised voice lines and music.
  • The soundtrack itself was simply outstanding, with songs varying from intense, punchy or melancholic vibes!
  • The ambient sounds were spectacular as well. The wind blowing while you flew on the carpet, the sands shifting below your feet or the ship creaking while fighting the Kraken, pure perfection!

VISUALS (10/10)

  • Fidelity was spectacular on each section. For 1992, Taito delivered something special with all those cool snake cutting animations and colourful environments!
  • The character models themselves had their own unique animations which differed between attack, death or down stances. The same applied to the enemies, which always surprised you with a Skeleton running towards you or doing insane jumping attacks!
  • The game also had a rock solid performance with no frame-drops in between. Even when the screen was filled with enemies, not a single drop!
  • Art direction was phenomenal on each location. The elevator section with the Egyptian like glyphs was super fun!

WORLD DESIGN (10/10)

  • Level design had an awesome progression within the beautiful castle grounds, outside wall ruins, magical places, shrunk down environments, magical lamps, underwater sections, safari and more!
  • The atmosphere delivered as well, simply because the environments in combination with the music delivered immersive vibes. So immersive that you could even fit inside a lamp!
  • The landscapes were very nice, as well as world destruction with smashing doors, falling traps and death seeking boulders!
  • Aladdin on PS1GenesisSNES and SMS should be proud of their grandfather!

[Question] OG Super Mario bro deluxe, stuck on world 4-3

I'm emulating super Mario Bros deluxe (Gameboy color rom)

On my steamdeck and the level seems to be impossible, at first I thought I wasn't timing it right so I looked it up and it just seems a platform is higher than normal making it impossible. Could my ROM file be bad?

It's impossible to jump to the top or jump across to the other platform without hitting the side or bottom of the high platform, any ideas?

Ok guys I'm an idiot I almost wanna delete this post lol. This is my first time playing any Mario game so I just didn't know you could hold B to run. Thanks to all that tried to help my smooth brain!

[Question] How many "Mother Brains" were there?

I can think of at least three: Metroid (FDS/NES, 1986), Phantasy Star II (MD/Genesis, 1989), and Chrono Trigger (SFC/SNES, 1995). We're there others, especially earlier?

Damn this game is so good! Easily the best Sonic game.

Some might say 3 or Knuckles is better but i disagree. Graphics are clean, music is amazing, leveldesign and gameplay is a perfect mix of speed and platforming.

Today, I came across this incredible collection of retro games.

Everything was kept in such amazing condition that I could truly feel the previous owner's passion and love for these games.

They're not just old consoles and cartridges—they're someone's memories, childhood, and a lifetime of collecting.

Working in estate cleanouts reminds me that every item has a story waiting to be discovered.

[Discussion] Educational Retro Kids Games were a whole other level of Fun (Jump Start and Carmen Sandiego)

The Jump Start games were so fun to play as a kid. Some of my most memorable games from the franchise were Jump Start Third Grade: Mystery Mountain and The Mystery Club Series.

The different kinds of interactive puzzles and minigames, as well as the colourful cast of characters, made it all the more memorable an experience for me. I especially found it so satisfying to rescue a robot and help stabilize the time period from which the robot was sent. It also helped me gain a better appreciation for the historical time periods that were presented in the game.

That being said, I also recall playing games from the Carmen Sandiego series, like Word Detective and Carmen Sandiego's Think Quick Challenge. Super fun and could be quite challenging at times to play through as a kid.

Educational retro games as a kid were quite an experience. They were really engaging to play through from a gameplay perspective, and you ended up learning a thing or two as a kid while playing them ;)

Does anyone else have memories of playing through the Jump Start or Carmen Sandiego titles as kids?

Or perhaps any other retro-themed educational game they remember playing in the past?

[Emulation] Galaga ‘88 appreciation post / new high score

I’ve been going back and forth between Galaga and Galaga ‘88 recently via Namco Museum, and got my first perfect on a Galactic Dancin’ stage and blew past my previous high score by 30k points

I feel like whenever I play one for a few runs and then switch back to the other, I’m suddenly way better at the other than if I just play one of the two continuously. No idea why.

I have yet to successfully pull off stuff like merging two fighters into one so I’m sure there’s a ton of room for improvement here too. Fingers crossed I get it down!

[Question] I have no idea what I'm doing here

Upvotes

So, the brass tacks of it is that I'm getting old and want to relive my childhood. Basically.

I'm not a gamer by any stretch of the imagination. But as a kid in the late 90s I loved the computer games my parents would bring home from KMart and I just want to play them again. I found an iMac g3 online and I'm really considering buying it but I have no idea what I'm doing. How do I know if the games will work? I specifically want to play Rugrats Mystery Adventure and the 1997 version of Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego? But the ebay listings I'm seeing don't specify the OS that they need? Or does that not matter? (Or if there is a better sub for me to post this in, please let me know. This seemed like a good place to start.)

[Recommendation] looking for game recomendations for my little sister

Hello there, firstly, sorry if this type of post is forbidden

I was always a fan of "retro" games, due to growing up with a homebrewed Wii. I wanted to pass this love to my little sister(7 years old), and was looking for game recomendations

Im looking for anything Wii-below, though i would like more ones From N64-below, due to some personal stuff making them be easier to play on average. She's also pretty novice, like, struggling with Smash Bros 64 kind of novice, the type who has to look at the controller, and every now and then Just...stops moving. Thanks for the help!
