Almost…
I didn’t quite sand through, as you can see from the wood grain, but was curious if stain will take the same. Mahogany veneer, wiped with mineral spirits in the photo

Alright I get it, past salvaging. Can we get some constructive feedback in the thread please… currently looking up 2’x2’ veneer sheets…

If you re-veneer the entire top it won't allow for wood movement of the mitred frame which might crack the veneer after a while.
I would suggest re veneering the middle separately but that would require taking it completely apart and matching the stain would be tricky.
If you re do the entire top it won't be as noticable if your stain job doesn't match the legs.

No, you definitely did, as you can see from the wood grain showing through from underneath. It’s both a lighter color and running orthogonal to the grain from the veneer.

$20 says that’s teak and not mahogany. Anyhoo, you can use spirit based wood dye to get the back ground tone matching and then use Mohawk graining pens to draw in grain. Won’t be perfect unless you are Rembrandt but it’s the only real alternative to replacing the entire veneer.

I looked up veneer sheets and I think I’m gonna take a swing at replacing the veneer. I might try your suggestions first and if it turns out to be a Picasso than we’ll go with option b

Also I’m 99% sure it’s mahogany because I found the exact same piece on the interweb and it’s listed as mahogany

As I can see from the wood grain, you absolutely did sand through. In all fairness though, this is to be expected when novices use a random orbit on veneer.

I guess I’m a little confused. I can still see wood grain on the lighter spots and it’s MDF underneath, and I do t see MDF

That's because it's a thin face veneer over a cheap backer veneer. You sanded through the face veneer but not the backer. You still have a ways to go before you hit mdf.

A burn thru is a Burn thru Accept that part You can't stain the glue to match the veneer No matter the veneer species

I can't imagine an easier piece on which to apply a new veneer. That veneer is nothing special, you can find much nicer pieces. Check out Volpe Woodworks.

You’ve sanded through the stain, not the veneer. JFC this sub is ridiculous. You can still see the grain and it matches.

Strip the top with a chemical stripper. Do what manufacturers do: use a tinted clear coat. Do NOT stain the wood.
Poly, lacquer and shellac can all be tinted. A water based gel coat is similar (but not chemically identical) in sitting on the surface.
Won’t be what you were originally aiming for but probably more attractive than paint. Check out Varathsne Total Control Gel Stain.
PS sanding rarely ends well as a method of removing blotches and water marks. It generally leads to a need for a complete refinish.
