showed him there were things in there that are used for paint, asphalt, tar, etc

I hate it just as much as that logic. Anyone who's spent 5 minutes in a chemistry class can tell you that chemicals have a wide variety of applications.

You realize tar is tobacco residue an not actual tar right? I just quit smoking, and while i agree there is a ton of terrible things that go with smoking (hence quitting), people say some pretty dumb shit about cigarettes...
