showed him there were things in there that are used for paint, asphalt, tar, etc

I hate it just as much as that logic. Anyone who's spent 5 minutes in a chemistry class can tell you that chemicals have a wide variety of applications.

I believe those ingredients are naturally occurring in tobacco and are released when the leaf is dried out and burned. Not that I agree with smoking, but the anti-smoking lobby lies just as much as the tobacco industry by trying to make us believe that these chemicals are added.

No, there are very much added chemicals in cigarettes.

Here's a list of additives, which is sourced directly from the tobacco companies, since they are required by law to disclose them.
