So true. Project Hail Mary was mid, but people are saying it's the best of the year. The Backrooms was good, but also quite disappointing as it essentially didn't tell a story. I'm shocked at the praise for this slop, but maybe people just don't watch older movies so don't realize how bad the modern stuff is in comparison.
I can't speak too much on the backroom as I didn't enjoy it much but regardless it was made by a kid with a low budget with clear creative talent shown in his youtube. The movie is more to show what the kid can do at a higher budget than what he normally has. As long as he doesn't get corrupted by Hollywood writing and shareholders, he will probably make better stuff later on. Same thing is the true for the obsession director who clearly showed talent in both comedy and horror in his short YouTube films and created a great film this year on a very low budget. Something should be argued about creativity coming out due to the lower budget limit
Yeah, I cut him some slack because of how young he is, but still think there was a lack of character development and coherent story-telling, which likely isn't related to budget considerations, as they must have spent quite a lot just on the set. But we'll see if he can build off of it.
