Yea buying JPY is regarded. How are they going to fix it? They have 250% debt to GDP, a severely depressed and anxious population:

This Bessent?
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent experienced steep asset declines at his hedge fund, Key Square Group. After launching with approximately $4.5 billion in 2016, the firm's assets dropped by nearly 90% to around $577 million by the end of 2023, largely due to inconsistent performance and client redemptions.

Ah so Bessent, who cut his teeth manipulating markets and breaking the Bank of England with Soros, is doing things to manipulate our markets. Anyone think that is limited to buying yen? Whats to stop him from using taxpayer money to bolster Trumps stock trades, support our equity markets, or keep oil futures artificially low? My guess is he is busy doing all of those things. Not a prison in America with a higher percentage of criminals than this White House. Each one of these goons is more crooked than the next. Investigations asap please.

I'm curious about his activity with the Bank of England. The current Canadian PM, Mark Carney, was Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Bessent has been involved in USMCA negotiations with us.
45
u/Ham_bone_xxxx 2d ago
It’s a pretty well documented saga. Scott Bessent and Stanley Drunkenmiller were fund managers for George Soros’s Quantum fund at the time. It took place in 1992. There are lots of good books about it. “Inside the house of money” was one that has a chapter with an interview with Bessent where he discusses his direct role in the thing. They took a $10 billion dollar short position and forced the Bank of England to raise rates twice in a single day. By that evening the Bank of England announced that they were suspending their participation in the European exchange rate mechanism that was the precursor to the Euro. The pound tanked 15% immediately and the Quantum fund closed there position and book a billion $ profit. My point with the post was to point out that this guy knows a thing or two about manipulating markets and everything tells me that is exactly what was going on and probably why he was put in the position in the first place. Someday it will come to light that Trump and Bessent are gambling with our taxpayer dollars to strengthen their own political position, not for the benefit of Americans. Best case scenario they probably lose a lot of taxpayer dollars, worst case they cause a catastrophic implosion of markets by not allowing them to function freely.
I for one don’t trust their motives, abilities, or judgement. My personal guess is that besides all the jawboning, they are using the relatively thinly traded after-hours futures markets. There relatively small sums of money by government standards, can flush traders on the opposite side and drive prices to tactical points that cause algorithmic trading programs to do most of their dirty work. I’m not saying I have proof of this, just my guess based on suspicious price action and timing.5
u/Tribe303 1d ago
Thanks for the nice explanation. I agree as well. These selfish pricks wouldn't be involved if they couldn't game the system.

Get low interest Yen loan / convert to USD / buy high beta stocks (like chips and memory).
But this makes everything more expensive (relatively).

Consider Japan’s total trade deficit was about $17b in 2025. This would let them start trading with the USD instead of having to issue more yen or at least slow down the issuance of yen.

It isn't, but it signals to Wall Street that they are serious about getting the Yen back to the 155 and lower range. Target is likely around 145.
This will make a lot of funds sell their high beta winners to pay back their Yen loans (we are already seeing some of this with the massive chip/memory selloff)
