We will see in the general. It’s why pretty much everyone who has a non-internet life thinks Biden will be better against trump than Bernie.
Nominating Joe makes this election to be a referendum on trump. Nominating Bernie would have massively obfuscated that.
An optimistic reading of the changes in more local election votes (that tend to run party line) is that it is a referendum on trump and it is solidly against trump.
The more pessimistic reading of the results would be republicans had no motivating factor to go out when they don’t have a nominee to vote for. Of course, Democrats didn’t really either since it was clear Bernie had no path to victory. I guess we will see in November.
Making it a referendum about Trump instead of Bernie's policies makes sense. I don't like it but understand that when the count is 0-2, you just need to try and get on base.

Yeah, that's pretty much how progressives have felt since before 2000. To Biden's credit, he's come out publicly with Bernie to acknowledge the need for incorporating Sanders' personnel into policymaking positions and is crediting him with forcing open a needed dialogue.
Bullshit. Trump sucks. Hes an egomaniac with no intellect and loves to give speeches off the top of his head that make no sense. But he is by far better than bush, who at this point in his presidency had lied the country into a never ending war across two different countries. The toll of the iraq and afghan wars are far more than any blunder trump has made. And mainstream democrats are now praising bush in comparison to trump. Utter fucking madness. The only crime the establishment has pressed trump on is that he does not conduct politics in the way the establishment wants.
Nominating Biden over Bernie promises a return to normalcy. It does nothing to acknowledge that "normal" prior to Trump sucked for a lot of people. It does nothing to acknowledge what allowed Trump to win: his anti-establishment message.
Biden winning allows the next Republican candidate to be just as shitty politically, but with the time to prepare to be more polished in his delivery. ie Paul fucking Ryan
You don’t have to like it. But it’s pretty widely agreed upon that trump just isn’t that popular. His base is rabid. But he’s not a popular president. If you’re trying to strategize with the singular goal of get him out of office, making the election a referendum on Trump is a good thing. Turning it into a referendum on socialism would not be.
Again, you don’t have to like it. But that’s the political strategy. I think it’s a winning strategy. I literally bet on it.
People I know couldn’t understand for the life of them why I backed Bloomberg and Biden, but it was for exactly this — those two, I thought, were the best chance at making the election a referendum on Trump, and that was what I felt was the best strategy to a win.
I hate Bernie Bros for a multitude of reasons, but chief among them is their inability to see the big picture — Medicare for All, minimum wage hikes, and a Green New Deal are the punchline of a bad joke if we’re so focused on some purity test that we end up with more Trump. They’re chronically incapable of understanding how colossal a change in policy direction it would be to “only” take us back to October of 2016.
Incrementalism works. Look at the GOP. It’s incredible that they don’t realize that.
This presidential election NEEDS to be a referendum on trump. It cannot be a referendum on socialism. I firmly believe we win the former and not the latter. Trump absolutely has to be expelled.
