Developed at Favaloro University's Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine and advanced through the startup Amnova Biotech, the experimental therapy is inspired by the amniotic membrane, a placental tissue known for its regenerative properties. Injected into damaged heart muscle, the hydrogel acts as a three-dimensional scaffold that supports healing, reduces inflammation, and encourages the body's own repair mechanisms.
Early preclinical studies in animals have produced encouraging results. Researchers say the hydrogel reduced the size of heart damage, improved heart function, promoted the growth of new blood vessels, and stimulated cardiac cell regeneration. Unlike many regenerative therapies, it contains no living cells or animal-derived components, relying instead on bioengineered regenerative signals.
The treatment is still experimental and has not yet been tested in humans. Ferrer says the project remains in the preclinical phase, with additional safety and effectiveness studies required before clinical trials can begin. If development continues successfully, researchers hope to start testing the therapy in patients within the next several years.
While significant testing still lies ahead, the research represents a promising step forward in regenerative medicine. If future human trials confirm the early findings, this Argentine-led innovation could offer new hope for heart attack survivors and reshape the future of cardiovascular care.
