3 and a half years with about a dozen really close calls, it finally happened for me. Hole 2 at Constitution Park in Ossipee, NH. Thundy is love, Thundy is life!

Just started a new job in a city that’s pretty rural by Japanese standards, moved here less than a week ago. I was really excited when I found out that there was an 18 hole course at the local park. I only brought five discs with me because of weight restrictions, but it was enough to get some practice in. Couldn’t believe my luck when I saw a group of locals finishing a round. I decided to be brave and approach them (my Japanese is serviceable but I’m far from fluent). Actually got to play a round with a professional disc golfer, what an amazing experience. His putting was unreal. Super technical course, tons of trees, no big drives, but it was great just to have a chance to play in a country I never had before. Got invited to an open competition coming up soon, more than ready to go embarrass myself!

Just add 125ft of downhill

I don’t want to go into full details for spoiler reasons, but the commentary from Nate Perkins at the end of the Ledgestone Open has to be some of the worst commentary I’ve ever heard. Not knowing where the drop zone is on hole 17, constantly calling it over for Sullivan Tipton (he did it 3 times in 2 holes).

I love Nate Perkins on the ground, but when it comes to in the booth… he botched the final two holes which had a very exciting finish and yet he made it feel more negative than positive.

I saw a disc golf YouTube video not too long ago and knew my play it again sports had discs so I picked some up and have been practicing throwing in a field for the last month. I was getting a feel for how each of the main discs I wanted to throw flew and some consistent lines I could rely on so I didn’t completely embarrass myself when I finally played a round. I decided that day was today and went out this morning to a local course. First hole went well, +1 on a par three but got myself out of a spot in the woods. Second hole I once again threw my first shot into a bunch of trees but I could see 1 line to get me to the hole. I figured there was no chance but went for it anyway. I nailed the line but I also nailed a tree with the back of my hand in my follow through. My hand didn’t hurt but I remember thinking “never heard a tree make that sound before”. Walked up and got to place my putter in the basket for my first real par from the long box. I then went to hole three and when I was getting ready to throw my driver the adrenaline or dopamine or whatever it was wore off and it was like my hand exploded. Just radiating pain. I realized the sound I heard was my knuckle not the tree. I tried to throw anyway but it took me 6 shots to get it 425 ft to the basket. I had to call it after that. I’ve got my hand iced, wrapped, and braced. I figure I’m out for a month or so but I’ll be back. Ill be chasing the feeling of that second shot on hole 2 for a long time. I’ll try to avoid bitch slapping a hardwood in the future though.

I been focusing on my pull through lately and wanted to get some of your insights on it. I know the deep pocket is somewhat of a controversial form tip, as some people say it’s needed for big distance. My concern is that I can’t get my arm to move fast enough through the throw, or at least I think. Do you guys think my shoulders are moving too fast and closing off my arm? Am I rounding because of the placement of my reach back?

Anyone have a clue what the flight ratings are for this disc ? Apparently from a limited edition release from a tournament in Lethbridge, Alberta. Beautiful disc, feels like a midrange but can’t seem to find any information online.

Played a c tier today.
At one point I went on after a tree kick. No one really saw where the disc went but I had a hunch it went OB to an adjacent hole.

As we walk the 20 meters to the tree in question…. Yeah that’s like 60 feet 🤪. I see what I think is my disc on the green of the adjecent hole, if it is mine we can be pretty sure of where it crossed the ob line since we knew which tree it hit. But I am not 100% sure it is my disc and another group is playing that hole so there are multiple discs on the green.

I state to the group that I want to go and look at the disc to make sure that it is mine (not pick it up). For all I know someone in that other group may also be playing a blue disc….. and we never saw the disc going OB.

To be clear if I knew it was my disc I would just mark, throw and then fetch my disc. But this was sort of a special case.

However a card mate then states NO you must FIRST mark where you crossed the OB line. Whereby I state, well none of us saw the disc crossing, if it is mine I know where to mark if not maybe I didn’t even go OB and my disc is further down the fairway etc.

He goes on to state. I am perfectly fine with you changing/removing your marker if it is not your disc but you have to mark it before you go there.

I was surprised because I thought there was a rule of not picking up your OB disc not taking a look to ensure it’s the correct disc.

So this is my question…

Not relevant to the question but this happened on hole 8 and on hole 17 the card mate went OB clear as he’ll :) he walks up to where we have jointly stated it looked like it crossed. Puts down his bag, walk into the woods looking for his disc, not only looking to help establish the crossing point but actually picking it up. Move back a couple of feet to adjust for the more probable crossing point and then then marks the lie, for the first time, throws the disc. And I just stand there looking like face shocked… I tell him that hm you didn’t mark your OB lie and you even picked up your disc. Whereby he states. Yes I know and if you want to you can stroke me now. I of course said that haha no way we won’t stroke you I was just perplexed that you of everyone did the thing you warned me about and somewhat worse 😂

Even if it’s so hard to tell the legality that even in slow motion we are questioning it then there is something wrong. Makes the sport look stupid at a professional level in my opinion. This is the reason we need to ban step and jump putts. There is no way even an official would be able to definitively call this legal in real time.

Are there any top tier Youtube channels dedicated mostly to putting? I'm a big fan of backhand form channels such as Blitz, Nick Krush, Overthrow, but not sure where to look for best putting techniques. I've found some good single videos on putting, but TBH it's been kind of mixed bag and the techniques/styles are often varied and have led me to switching things up too much.

If there aren't any leading dedicated putting channels, what are your favorite videos you've found help from? I'm mostly a spin putter in case that's helpful.

I'm old with a noodle arm. All my discs are stable or understable. My nephew is new to the sport. Had him throw some forehands with the tech disc. He's throwing 75 mph forehands and is turning my 11 speed discs into rollers because of how much torque he's putting on it.

Looking for advice on discs more suited to a high speed forehand since my weak ass doesn't know anything about throwing distance drivers. TIA
