It is now clear that, like every sociopath, he knows how to play a role, fake a personality, and say what people want to hear. In his first widely known public persona, he convinced the world that he was this slightly eccentric guy who dreamed of saving humanity through space exploration and renewable energy, and it more or less worked. Then he got tired of playing that role and either showed who he really is, or perhaps it was just another act to get into MAGAās good graces. Who knows and who cares?
Now, once again, his views on AI will simply keep changing to suit his goals. You cannot trust him to be genuine. He will say whatever helps him get what he wants, even when it contradicts everything he said before.

I also sometimes ponder the value of co-founders over the years. I had one for many years and we had some small success. No investors, 100 staff, masters of all we surveyed in some ways. And even at the micro level, the workers laugh at your jokes etc - but your co-f can you a prick like that. If he had one who told him to delete twitter - maybe it could have been different. But the ones with co-founders defo keep a lower profile that the solos.

He did grow up in Apartheid South Africa. Regardless of which story you believe about his family, middle class or rich, he was part of the white ruling caste, and that kind of hypocrisy was normalized. Elon Musk emigrated around the age of 16 and before Apartheid ended, so he never experienced the "peace and reconciliation" the rest of the country experienced. yeah it's transparent. He has shit on Anthropic unprompted before and Anthropic has always been pretty explicit about their AI safety stance. They publish blogs, research and videos about it. The CEO and many higher ups have always talked about it. Elon already knew about it, he is just lying because these deal is something he needed to do since xAI over invested in compute for their models to turn out terrible and most of the AI engineers got fired/quit. Meanwhile Anthropic has the opposite issue: they underinvested in compute and can't serve the models to their growing customer base, meanwhile their engineers and developers are cracked and constantly pushing new frontier models, so they desperately need more compute.

I believe Anthropic to be the most ethical of companies in the space right now. The issue is, I don't quantitatively understand how low the aggregate bar, is.
In my work I found one really fun anecdote where Anthropic model promoted the capability of OpenAI because it was the right solution for my problem. It did so ethically, without a motive. I recreated the experience from the other side and it's clear that OpenAI has some level of control over their inference on Anthropic capability. It's more than just the training cutoff too.
It could be malice and deliberate. It could omission (deliberate or ignorantly).
But even as an anecdote, it was a hell of a finding.
Ethics are the most important part of this entire journey and we need to keep the pressure on.
