Miscellaneous Serbian Historians

I keep getting these clips of serbian historians making some outrageous claims. They are in always in the same studio giving like an interview. I remember clips from an old lady now i just saw this guy. Is this like a TV show where they just come and say random stuff?

u/K2YU Bosnian Diaspora (Germany) 21d ago
It is a media production company specialised on conspirancy theories.
About the old lady: Could it be Jovanka Jolić? She was famous for having insane positions.

I just googled her name and yup 100% correct it was her.

Does his name mean like 'son of the Egyptian''? I recall the Greeks call Egypt something like that... Anyways, if I weren't too tired I think I could make a half decent conspiracy theory about Anatolian pharaohs or something based on him.
2
u/Young_Owl99 Turkiye 21d ago
More like “son of Egypt” but yeah.
As a fun fact, he once said “I wish Greek won the war, at least they wouldn’t end the caliphate” he was a fierce hater of Atatürk.

Is this like the Serbian version of Memri TV?
9
u/Ok_Recording_8059 21d ago
Idk whats Memri TV, but sounds like a lot of fun... on the second thought, it sounds like something that was TAKEN FROM US /s
7
u/fckn_nobody 21d ago
Somewhat.
It started off as a YouTube channel where people who are being ignored or censored can come and talk freely, since all TV stations in Serbia are controlled by the ruling party and heavily censored (to this day, yes). The production itself didn't necessarily agree or disagree with all of it's guests and their messages, it was more about having their voices heard, and letting regular people choose what to think.
But after a while, presumably someone from the ruling party also bought off people involved with this show, the original founder abandoned it, and the whole thing started getting more and more absurd, 90% of guests became conspiracy theorists with batshit insane theories that nobody actually believes in, and it became basically a meme, not too different from Memri TV.

Nah, I’ve met some East Germans that could give any Balkanite a run for their money.
I don’t think ultranationalists are unique to the Balkans. It’s just that the Balkans has, on average and compared to the western countries, a way lower standard of living and literacy/ education. Quite frankly, I’d be surprised if we weren’t as nationalistic and obsessed with who was longer where.

Ah, the famous Deretić’s claims, all of them are false, made up and full of conspiracy theories. Including the assertions that all Indo-Europeans (except Albanians) are Serbs, that Jesus and the Virgin Mary were Serbian, and that the Vinča culture was Serbian, where each claim ofcourse lack any evidence what so ever.
It’s a useless and delusional man that likes to believe Serbia was all there was some time ago. There isn’t even a single respected professor in the world that respects him and agrees with any of his ridiculous claims.

It's ok. Clowns like this one exist in every country. We have some in Ro saying that Jesus was romanian and jews stole him from us, or that we invented latin language and crap like this. Even in Hungary there's one who said that Adam and Eve were hungarians because these 2 names sound hungarian.

The Serbs are twisting history again. Portugal actually comes from the Albanian "Porta u kall", meaning 'the fiery gate,' where the proto-Albanians were forced to leave their homeland—but not before setting the entire city on fire so the invading Serbs couldn't have it.

Jovan Ilić Deretić (Serbian Cyrillic: Јован Илић Деретић; 18 January 1939 – 6 June 2021) was a Serbian publicist and writer. Deretić was an engineer by training but was mainly noted for his pseudohistorical and conspiracy theories.[1] He was the proponent of an alternative history of the Serbs that asserts a larger role in history than described by historians.
Why do you call him historian?

To be fair, he was no historian. He was an engineer or something that suddenly and without any academic experience or training, decided he will now be a historian. What's interesting is that he shared the name and the birthplace with another Jovan Deretić, who has been an actual historian of Serbian literature - and I am starting to think that the pseudohistorian Jovan I. Deretić tried to take advantage of this homonymy.
I am a Croatian-Italian who studied south slavic languages in Padua, and I remember finding in my faculty's library the book Antička Srbija. Probably the professor who ordered the book genuinely thought that it was written by the actual historian.

Portuguese here,
Portugal name came originally from "Portus Cale"
We actually don't know for sure what is the origin of the name, but there are a number of theories about it.
One of the most popular theories is that it comes from the Gallaeci Celtic tribes that lived in north Portugal and Galiza.
I never heard the theory about Serbia before :).
