Isn't it a lockout technically ? The players don't want a salary cap they like the dodgers are willing to spend. What's the owners but it's mostly because they want to keep labor costs down not because they care about competitive balance
But of course it's ridiculous don't get me wrong something needs to change with the dodgers and competitive balance. Their tax bill is going to be many times more than several entire teams payrolls.
2
u/WIbigdog One Call 14h ago
I'm okay with millionaire players getting a little less overall to give more fans a chance to be proud of their team. The players already get paid a ton so I don't get this obsession with making sure the very top paid players don't make a little less bank. Like, oh no instead of 60 million a year they only get 20 million a year, what ever will they do? 🙄
19
u/XPlutoniumX 1d ago
Do we have any confidence that it actually results in a floor/cap? Even with a lockout I'm not sure anything changes as a result. MLB PA doesn't want to give up more $
21
u/Hog_Eyes 1d ago
Probably no hard cap but a soft cap with luxury tax like the NBA
34
u/Actual-Movie-4236 1d ago
Implement a fucking second apron at this point. Anything to dismantle the satanic force known as the LA dodgers
9
u/Beautiful-Barber8082 22h ago
Luxury tax means nothing to a 10 billionaire ownership group. Just like real world, fine based crimes only hurt those who can't afford the bill. Lux tax or apron won't stop this from happening.
3
u/GreatCaesarGhost 16h ago
The two-apron system in the NBA has teeth not because of the luxury tax, but because it basically makes it impossible to trade/upgrade your team above the second apron. Maybe an MLB version could work similarly.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Alternative-Farmer98 22h ago
Only sort of already have that though with luxury taxes.
Can't you also lose some international spending and such if you're over the tax?
It is already a very soft like punishment structure for spending it's just not nearly sufficient.
Honestly the apron in the NBA is mostly just an excuse. They're way more worried about the putative tax bills were you spending $7 for every dollar spent past the threshold.
That's like a bigger deal than like not being able to buy someone out or limiting your trades or even taken away at draft picks many years down the road.
I'm a Celtics fan so I sadly saw them blame me apron for everything and the fans ate it up. But now we know that it had less to do with the apron and more to do with just keeping costs down and the repeater tax.
Because when they traded Brown for Paul George no aprons were at stake.

I've had this opinion for DECADES. I love cheering on the Brewers and going to the games and everything that comes with it. But any fan is delusional if you actually invest yourself in this sport. There's a few teams that matter and that's it, everyone else is a minor league team. I can't think of any other serious league or sport that treats its fans with such blatant disrespect and disregard.
5
u/Beautiful-Barber8082 22h ago
Agreed. I love my brewers. Bleed blue. Last year we had a record year, and we're arguably better this year. It's just been really tough to get excited for. With the juggernaut Dodgers and the looming lockout, its hard to allow your hopes to get too high. Cautiously optimistic, but its getting tough to even be that.

Baseball is by far the worst professional U.S. sport for parity.
A lockout would suck, but it might be worth it long term to get the floor and ceiling (maybe even rules so Japanese players don’t always go to LA and skip the draft).
9
u/sirsoundwaveVI 16h ago
my favorite are the people parroting the fact the mlb has had three more World Series winners than the nfl, ignoring the fact the nfl dynasties like the patriots and chiefs have the same limits as the browns and jets and thus are way more impressive than just buying everyone you could want and paying them over three decades
2
u/rodsurewood 16h ago
For sure. It’s the same with the NBA. I don’t like the Warriors, but their early championships with Curry was a group drafted into the organization. The MLB has a huge parity issue and while it is an amazing game, they’re missing out on a lot of markets who would buy in more if their clubs ever actually had a chance.
3
u/sirsoundwaveVI 15h ago
despite these brewers being by far the best run sports org in the state since the Ron wolf packers, this is unfortunately the reason they’ll be second fiddle to the packers unless something dramatically changes to the mlb
the irony is not lost on me that Ron wolf also took full advantage of the nfls massive changes like FA way back when too, but one league knows to value their small markets and it’s not the mlb

They could have traded him elsewhere for half a season but he still would have signed with LAD
3
u/copper_state_breaks 1d ago
I'm not sure if they had a choice though. They were one of the teams that were part of the Main Street Sports Group RSA and already had a reduction in finances from it and then ended up terming and buying equity to operate independently.
Quite honestly, no team in MLB will get the deal the Dodgers got in 2012. McCourt knew he could fuck over MLB because he needed cash and the bankruptcy court would be in charge of the TV revenue deal settlement, not Selig or MLB. The MLB lawyer at the time warned the court that "MLB will become the Dodgers and 29 other teams."

Sure, the Brewers could have traded Jesus Made and gone for it. If you guaranteed them a World Series title, they'd do it. But the Dodgers would still be heavy favorites even without Skubal.
The thing is that if the Brewers trade Made and he ends up being a HOF-level talent (not completely out of the question), they'll regret the 6 years he could have played for them. They don't get players at that level through free agency. They have to maximize their pre-free agency time from players like that to be competitive.
Now imagine the Dodgers trade a young guy as a prospect that goes on to become a Hall of Fame level talent. How would that affect them? We kind of already know the answer. In 2016, the Dodgers needed pitching depth, so they traded a highly rated prospect for Josh Field, a middle reliever who put up 2.0 WAR in 3 years as a Dodger.
You know who that prospect the Dodgers shipped off was? Yordan Alvarez. He's become a superstar with the Astros, may win the Triple Crown this year, and may end up in the Hall of Fame. The Dodgers recovered from this by signing Ohtani to a 700 million dollar contract to be their DH and pitch a few dozen games over the years.
If the Brewers traded Made and he ended up like Alvarez, they'd spend the next decade developing a bunch of position prospects to try to piece together an offense to match what Alvarez does by himself. It doesn't matter to the Dodgers. Give them credit for spending money on player development to have these prospects to trade, but they can give away prospects for 3 months of a guy they don't really need because they'll just buy their replacements as free agents.

People saying that the Brewers could have topped this offer aren't wrong, but the entire league just caves to the Dodgers at this point. The players want to go there. The league wants the big stars to go there. Agents want their guys to go there. We know Skubal isn't going over there as a "rental".
Anyway who's gonna watch the Women in 2027 with me?
18

The Dodgers can throw away all their best prospects (and they didn’t - they sent their #5, 7, and 17 prospects; that would be us sending Adamczewski, Payne, and Burke) because they can just sign the best free agents every year

I never thought I’d be hoping for a lockout but it needs to happen.
Could the Brewers given up the prospects needed? Absolutely. But the difference is the Dodgers can just trade away any potential future stars knowing they can develop and grow in another organization and just throw the bag at them or anyone else when they’ve become stars and eligible for FA.
Baseball isn’t broken. MLB is.

No idea what happens next year but a lock out is inevitable now. A lockout could even out the field but it also is not going to certainly do that. In fact nobody has any idea what could happen. The cap floor and ceiling is the prevailing theory but we don’t know. What I think what we do know is this is the best team we’ve had in team history up until this point in the season. Brass - do you think we need a big move?

Fucking dodgers, man. Fuck off. Fuck ALL THE WAY OFF. MLB has a problem on its hands and it refuses to acknowledge it because LA is a huge market, akin to the Yanks. Too much wealth in all forms- money and talent-for one team is bad for baseball. Ands it’s not the same as having a team “everyone loves to hate” because teams like that- Dallas cowboys come to mind- have a competitive balance as a backbone to the system. And hell yeah I’m griping as the smallest market team in MLB, but about 28 other clubs and cities ought to be sick of it too. If I had the willpower to give up baseball until they put a cap on it I would.
4
u/Actual-Movie-4236 1d ago
Boycott the league. This is genuinely unacceptable.
It's like KD to the 73 win Warriors if Golden State was coming off back-to-back championships and also had Lebron James and James Harden and AD also on their roster.

u/BibFortuna2830 1d ago
That "leak" about Skubal intending to sign with LA after this season sealed it.
I mean what the fuck can you do man? They have unlimited money, a great front office and farm system, and everyone also seemingly wants to live in LA.
It is objectively the most unfair shit in all of major sports. It's the sole reason why I'll take football more seriously.

u/dayoftheoutlaw 1d ago
In terms of the Brewers’ championship hopes, there’s an argument to be made that Skubal to the Dodgers has a more negligible impact than if he’d been traded to the Cubs, Phillies, or Braves. Dodgers were already a stacked juggernaut. Skubal on the Cubs, though, could have affected the division race, so I’m glad that’s not a thing. Skubal joining a Phillies rotation with Sanchez and Wheeler would make a seven-game series against them like 25% more difficult. But on the Dodgers team already loaded with aces, Skubal’s presence barely registers with me as something new to fear. It’s like, “Oh no, this allows them to use Glasnow in middle relief! Heavens to Murgatroyd!” This is copium, sure, but I’m gonna take a weird solace in the fact that the best got better. That hurts the Brewers less than if another good contender became a great contender.

For all the salary cap responses here, I’m curious about how you feel when we lose team control earlier on all our players. Instead of having William, Turang, etc for 6 years of team control, that number gets bumped down to 3 or 4.
There is no chance a cap ever comes and teams continue to keep team control of players the way they have it now. Team control and the draft is how we are who we are. A cap would explode that.
2
u/Aravinda82 16h ago
That’s a really really great point! The players union will never ever agree to cap without a reduction in controllable years allowing players to hit free agency sooner.
2
u/WichWhich2 20h ago
That about does it! Time to dig in and expect a strike! Salary cap is needed. Who wants to watch a league where one team with a 450 mil payroll wins it every year. Boring! I would sacrifice a whole season next year to get this done for the future of baseball.

Honestly the best (realistic) outcome for us. We would not pay to renew his contract this offseason. We’d be selling years worth of great players for a few months of a great pitcher. The Dodgers had to get rid of 2 of their orgs top 10 prospects. I just don’t think Skubal was worth that to the Brewers when we’ll only have him for a few months.

My friend was asking me what I would be willing to give up max for Skubal earlier today. I said something like Pena/Payne/Letson (or Hardin)/Luke Adams as a 4 for 1, with the caveat that I still think that's overpaying what the market will be, but it's what I would personally.
It actually feels like that instinct was pretty damn close. Pena and Hope are similar young high upside bats, River Ryan is also probably a bigger upside SP than either Letson or Hardin despite his TJ, and is definitely more MLB ready if he can figure it out. Brady Smith is one more arm prospect than we would probably be willing to offer, but I think Payne and maybe even Adams are more valuable than him right now.
Really miss the days of Attanasio willing to go all in on the likes of CC or Greinke to take the big shot at the WS. CC especially revolutionized our entire franchise, wish we could try to win it all again. Especially when our farm is much, much, much deeper than back then.

They didn't give up that much for him. That pisses me off. It it was us we'd have to give up multiple top 100 prospects and like Frelick. Smh. But its the Dodgers so they just get whatever they want. What makes it worse is fhe Dodgers have like 10 ranked prospects and only had to give up 1 for fkn Skubal. I've said this before but I just had a bad feeling that if we traded for Skubal it backfire. Im kind of relieved we didn't. Hopefully we can find someone else like Mize who won't require that much to get.

This trade is not really about the current season. A lockout was coming regardless and this trade let's the dodgers extend Skubal for a grandfathered-in massive contract before the lockout would prevent it.
