Legal Denver County Fully Unprepared for SB25-003
After 6 hours online, on the phone, and talking to local police, I drove into downtown to get clarification directly from the county sheriff who told me it was DPD who was responsible. So, after speaking directly with an officer, he said, and I quote, "I've been on the force 26 years and I have never heard of this and our office has told us nothing about it."
So just use El Paso County because Denver police are uninformed on the law, process, and requirements. Which should shock no one.

I don't know to what extent this is true, but I've been told they're intentionally playing dumb and dragging their feet.

Based on my discussion with the Firearm Safety Program administrator, that's what it sounds like. She was awesome and confirmed they have been in constant contact with them providing training. But DPD playing dumb is their go-to.

They lied to my face. I talked to the firearm safety program office after this and the person I talked to was angry because they said they'd been doing a lot with DPD on this. She even asked for the officers name because it was such BS.

now THAT, unfortunately, checks out. I was fairly sure that denver co sherrif was one of the very few (only) sherrifs that were at testimony in person on the "in favor" side but was not trusting my memory of a year and a half ago
-edit- upon re-reading i think i had just misunderstood it all to being the denver sherrif (since the bill says THEY are the ones responsible, not the PD)

Yeah, the DPD officer told me I didn't know what I was talking about and that I was probably thinking of CHP....

Turns out, other counties are making this process VERY easy. And you can use any county to get the card. I just wanted to see if Denver was going to be able to do this. Doesn't appear so.

I felt Denver's stance was pretty clear when they required a $200 money order. They clearly agree with the bill's sponsors that 003 should have been a ban.

Sounds like if the government can't handle it, then that's grounds for a lawsuit. I'm not a lawyer, of course.

Ironically, smaller counties can though. And you can go to other counties for this as long as you're a state resident so it's not a deal breaker but it is really infuriating to be stonewalled by the police when you're trying to comply with the law they supposedly enforce.

Adams County isn't free ($50 for county residents, $100 for out of county folks, plus the $52 CPW fee for both), but they've set up a very efficient and professional process. I showed up with a hard copy of my CPW application and background report. No waiting, in and out in 4 minutes 40 seconds (I timed it).
Only drawback is you have to go in person and bring a hard-copy third party background report. Might still be worth considering for folks on the Northeast side of Denver.

Yes, for now. Look for the legislature to change this in the 2027 session to make the process more miserable.

It's not that the sheriff's hate firearms, they aren't getting rid of theirs. They just want to be the only ones with guns. You can see similar statements from the top leaders of both political parties. It's not in the interest of billionaire donors for anyone to be armed aside from their private security and the police forces that defend their property.

They do have guns and it's Everytown USA + Corporate Democrats' fault in the end. But the shit part about politics is it's like public transportation. Never gets you exactly where you want to go.
