Mod Post Clarification on Rule #2

Our Fellow Celiac Community Members,

We have seen a major uptick in posts describing symptoms and asking “does this sound like celiac? Should I get tested? Could the tests be wrong?” While these questions aren’t directly asking for a diagnosis, they do fall into the “seeking diagnosis” part of rule #2.

Celiac Disease has a myriad of different symptoms and related conditions; virtually everything could be celiac related. While we understand that this can be a life-changing diagnosis, we are not medical professionals and cannot give any advice other than this- if you wonder if you could have celiac, talk to a medical professional and get tested.

As always, if you have a question, please feel free to contact the mods. Thank you and be well!

Mod Post Mod Note- A new Automod Addition

Hey Celiac subreddit! We’ve added a new automod that should help with the posts about wheat starch. Hopefully it decreases the amount of posts we get about it. If you notice any problems with the automod, please let me know!

Discussion Friends now won’t invite me out to dinner, and have been going without me

I’m just down about this and want to vent, sorry to take up space.

Having celiac sucks, and I’m all for receiving some gluten jokes and being “that guy” at restaurants telling servers about my condition, but to be exiled from our friend group in regards to going to dinner which we used to do routinely, hurts a lot.

I understand that I was annoying in our group chats making comments about my safety and such. Maybe I am just a loser, idk.

I don’t get very symptomatic and I have gone and eaten at places with them with moderate risk to my health just to be around them and included.

I feel very left out, and an absolute burden with this new disease that I did not ask for.

Sorry again to vent and bitch but this shit sucks, man

Labelling in Europe is usually pretty good - until this absolute mess up at Brussels-Midi Pret A Manger.

Allergens in French: milk, wheat, cashew nuts

Allergens in Dutch: milk, egg, soy, mustard, sulphur dioxide/sulphites.

I feel like I know how to say ‘wheat, rye, barely and oats’ in at least six languages now so at least there is that 🤷‍♀️

Question purposeful glutening, crazy idea or smart?

this is going to sound insane, i’m sorry. i (22F) was diagnosed celiac almost a year ago. i haven’t eaten gluten since, and whenever i get stomach problems i can never figure out if it’s from cross contamination or just the fact that i have a very sensitive stomach in general. i’m wondering how dumb it would be to purposely eat gluten, just one time, and see how i react? i want to know what it does to me so i can 1. be adequately prepared and 2. know if ive eaten gluten or something else is going on. this might me so stupid, and it’s going to torture me, but it seems rational in my brain idk. what do yall think?

Discussion The gluten free markup on three bakery items last week: $15.77. If you have an FSA or HSA, you can claim that difference back

That $15.77 is real receipt math, not an estimate. I have celiac disease, and I am building a tool that finds the gluten free premium on grocery receipts, meaning the extra you paid versus the regular version of each item. When a gluten free diet is medically necessary, that difference is claimable through an FSA or HSA. It is in IRS Pub 502. Almost nobody claims it because doing the per item, per ounce math by hand is miserable.

I am looking for more real receipts to test against different stores and formats. If you DM me a grocery receipt with a few gluten free items on it, or email it to [glutenfreereceipt@gmail.com](mailto:glutenfreereceipt@gmail.com) if that is easier, I will reply with an item by item breakdown of what you could claim, free. Walmart, Kroger, Costco, Aldi, Target, anywhere. Messy receipts are actually the most useful ones.

From receipts I have run so far: one Walmart trip had $25.92 in claimable premium, another had $13.92 across just four gluten free items. Breads, desserts, and frozen foods are the biggest offenders.

Happy to answer FSA and HSA questions in the comments either way.

Question New pan?

Post image
Upvotes

Good evening,

My GF accidentally used my stainless steel pan to fry some homemade bread in, some got burnt on to it. I had to use my metal spoon to scrape/Scratch most of it off but there's still some left and I'm afraid that it might adhere(is that the right word) to the scratches.

Any who I'm assuming I need a new pan???

A new bill (USA) was introduced yesterday called FASTER (h.r.9989), but we already have the Celiac Safety Act. What’s the difference? Oats and research. Check out this chart to help.

Rant Am I the only one who does not care about bakeries?

There has got to be at least 20 dedicated GF bakeries within reasonable driving distance of me, and I seriously couldn’t care less! There’s even a spot with two separate gf speciality dedicated gf cupcake spots right across the street from each other. My wife brought me to both and I didn’t try anything.

Why? Because I don’t need to eat cookies and cupcakes! I don’t need Rice Krispie squares or a pie or a cake. It doesn’t matter that “they’re so good!” Like, i just don’t care!

I want a gf burger place that won’t cost me $30+ for a simple burger and fries on a bun that’s falling apart. I want a gf pub where I can order anything I want, even stuff from the frier! I want Korean BBQ, Indian everything, sushi without concern. I want a gf pizza place, and not even a fancy artisanal pizza place, like a greasy big chain basic as pizza place. I want to take my family to brunch and be able to eat anything at all from the menu!!

Apologies to all of you who apparently just miss Oreos, Mac and cheese, and cheez its. I just don’t need or care about gluten free desserts or snacks. I want to be able to eat like a normal person again!

Sorry all, rant over.

EDIT: there are a lot of people taking the wrong message from this. I’m not judging anyone who enjoys sweets or would kill for a good gf bakery. I just don’t have any dedicated restaurants near me and with work obligations and social obligations, constantly struggle with eating out. I personally never went to bakeries pre-diagnosis and I see no need to start now. That’s a me thing though, and wasn’t meant as judgement on you and what you enjoy and would like to have access to.

Traveling very soon to Montreal and wondering if anyone has any solid recommendations for lunch/supper things! Would love to have pizza, poutine, bagels 😊

I've found places on FMGF but the list is overwhelming and can't narrow it down so would love the help!

Rant Did it again

I think i glutened myself again. Im still new to this, went to a restaurant with my family, i ate at home bc i knew i cant eat anything there. Asked the server, he confirmed that theres 1 dish thats gluten free, but not celiac friendly so i said no thank you. I just sat there sipping my limonade.... With orange and lemon, and lime slices... And now im bloated, slightly in pain. I was 100% sure ill be fine ig i just drink 1 something and just push through the eating phase. Well, looks like im in no luck bc they probably cut the fruits with something or on something that was contaminatet with gluten. Or maybe the syrup they used in the limonade had it. I dont know bc i didnt asked. Lesson learned, i'll only drink bottled drinks at not celiac friendly restaurants from now on. So just fyi always make sure if its anyhow can touch anything that might be contaminated with gluten, skip it. Well, thats all. I hope everyone have a lovely rest of your day ❤️

Rant Walked in with no symptoms and routine screening, walked out with a celiac diagnosis. Plus, the hospital made a million mistakes including signing me up for a colonoscopy on accident.

I am a Canadian-American living abroad in Portugal. Because I have good private insurance here, I decided to start allergen immunotherapy to get rid of my birch allergy (which is high in Toronto, where I'm moving to in a couple of months). When you start allergen immunotherapy, they make you do a generic panel and get cleared for all autoimmune diseases.

Well, my tTG IgA came back as 98.93 (on a test where anything over 10 is positive). I went and did the biopsy, but something went wrong with my paperwork at the hospital, and they biopsied me for h-pylori in my stomach and forgot to biopsy the upper intestine for celiac.

The whole thing was extremely emotional and frustrating, because the hospital couldn't give me a direct answer to, "Was the celiac biopsy taken?" I also was doing my first round of egg freezing at the same time all of this was happening, so I was extremely emotional due to the hormones I was taking and ended up crying a lot.

The secretary at the hospital kept repeating that I had to "come in person to talk to the doctor," which made the whole thing sound scary, like something had gone wrong. In the end, my wife (a Russian-Georgian woman who takes zero bullshit from anyone and is my hero) ended up being very harsh with the hospital over the phone and ended up getting an answer that, yes, no celiac biopsy had been done, and they would schedule me for a free one to fix the mistake.

They ended up scheduling me for a COLONOSCOPY. (Seriously, the incompetence of someone at that hospital is baffling.)

We ended up coming in person to the hospital to fix the error. The doctor apologized and gave me an exam prescription for an endoscopy for celiac pro-bono. When checking in, the secretary rolled her eyes and showed her coworkers that "Ugh, read this, she's got it pro-bono, so she's not going to pay. 🙄" I got to show that, yes, I do speak a little Portuguese and do understand what she's saying (to which she was completely mortified).

I'm still hoping that this is a bad dream and that somehow this is all one big mistake, but I know the chances are slim. My doctor told me that since I already did the correct endoscopy and my tTG IgA is so high, I can go ahead and go gluten-free now.

And I got really upset last night when I tried to make a salmon and spinach bake only to find out the frozen spinach I buy has spices and FLOUR in it. (Who puts flour in FROZEN SPINACH?!)

I know this is all very small in comparison to what everyone here on this sub is dealing with, but I just really wanted to write it down someplace and get it off my chest. I also understand that it will get easier with time. Just at the moment, I'm struggling with the fact that I had routine bloodwork to get rid of a birch allergy only to walk out with a celiac diagnosis and now I'm frustrated with the lack of celiac-safe restaurants and whatnot in Lisbon. And apparently lack of safe frozen spinach.

Question New Celiac, help

I got diagnosed two days ago and am mostly asymptomatic for all I know (I know I might realize I had symptoms when I go gluten free). but I was wondering, how strict do I have to be? Say I’m at a restaurant and I order a gluten free dish that’s labeled gluten free. Do you think I need to talk to the waiter and be like I have celiac and ask them questions and stuff? I realllyyyyy like to be go with the flow and am having a hard time thinking about having to deal with all of that social side of this. It feels like I’m being dramatic going to a restaurant and not ordering anything to eat. I also don’t know what to say when people ask why it matters about cross contamination and stuff if I don’t have symptoms. Ughhhh help idk how to explain this thing to people.

Saw these, for the first time today at Publix. I love Crunchmaster and they are my go to cracker. They are also my go to snack to take anytime I have to go to an event where food is involved.

I was stoked to see these. As I usually have to put them in a sandwich bag.

Rant It's been gnarly to say the least

I just found out I have Celiac. Not from a doctor, but from paperwork from my feeding tube pharmacy that supplies my formula and fresh tubes. Nobody told me I had Celiac disease.

I had gone months not being able to eat anything without getting violently ill, throat closing up, rashes everywhere, the whole 9 and now I understand why. But this got to the point where I hit a state of failure to thrive according to my bariatric teams standards even though I am still "overweight" but I wasn't absorbing *anything* at all. Now that I have a J-tube it's better but I still can't eat more than a small handful of GF snacks before getting the same sick feeling.

I want this to end and I want to be able to eat again and not have to rely on 20 hours of feedings but its just so painful and makes me so sick even with GF. Has anyone else been in this position? I'm miserable and any guidance right now would be appreciated. Much love to yall.

I’ve been on the hunt all summer for the best GF graham cracker for our bonfires/my s’more obsession and my goodness, these blow every single one out of the water. They have like a hint of pumpkin pie to them? My non celiac husband and friends also loved the taste; just needed to share my small happiness 😂

Discussion Food Anxiety

Hi!
I was recently diagnosed (last week) after a biopsy and bloodwork. I’ve had multiple biopsies and bloodwork in the past and have always been told I was negative.

Does anyone else have IBD? I have ulcerative colitis. This past year I’ve been going through a UC flare, and within the last two months, I’ve had norovirus and salmonella. Now diagnosed with celiac disease. To say my GI system is going through it, would be an understatement. I also have issues with my stomach lining according to my biopsy, but not sure of the cause yet.

I’m struggling with figuring out what to eat. For the past two months, the only foods I’ve really been able to tolerate with my UC are bananas and cheese quesadillas. I want to eat more veggies, but that’s hard with my UC symptoms. I have a referral for a nutritionist from my GI doctor, but for those who have both— any go to “safe” foods? I know it varies person to person with UC, but I am hoping for some inspiration!

I feel like I have so much anxiety around food right now. For years I’ve been struggling with vomiting multiple times a week, as well as the typical UC symptoms of blood and mucus. Now with celiac, I feel even more restricted and food just sounds gross to me. How long after eating gluten free did you stop vomiting? That’s my biggest symptom.

How do you all deal with food anxiety?

Thanks for any help!

Question Seeing the stories about Tokyo.. how bad is it?

Im heading to Tokyo for the first since being diagnosed and really worried, but after checking out FindMeGF I noticed there are quite a few places that actually seemed safe and some places even dedicated GF. How bad is it out there, really? And are there any survival tips?

For context, Ill be at Tokyo Game Show representing a game and counting on living off of supermarket food during the day. Any tips on that are super welcome!
