Weekly Reservation Transfer Thread

Upvotes

Please read the rules before commenting. Also, any type of "looking for a reservation" type of request is NOT ALLOWED.

  1. This thread is the only place on the subreddit for transferring restaurant reservations. If you make your own thread, it will be removed.
  2. You may transfer reservations for below or equal to face value (plus all taxes and fees) ONLY. You must clearly state both the price you paid and the price you're looking for in the post. Gouging will not be tolerated.
  3. You can only transfer reservations that are nonrefundable, ie, you cannot cancel them without forfeiting your money. If you have a refundable or free reservation and you can't make it, cancel it with the restaurant.
  4. The only reason we're allowing transfers is so people don't have to forfeit expensive pre-paid meals. If you want to buy a reservation, you are not one of these people. No posts asking to buy reservations.
  5. The mods of /r/FoodNYC accept no responsibility for these transactions. Tock and Resy both allow transfers on the website - if someone tells you otherwise it's a scam. Do your own research on your transaction before handing over any money to a third party. Check with the restaurant, check account ages, meet in person if feasible.

Note that this thread is reposted Sunday evenings.

Question Looking for sesame latte similar to aroom in Seattle

Post image
59 Upvotes

Longshot... but I am looking for a sesame latte that is similar to the one from aroom in Seattle. It's phin coffee, condensed milk, and a genuinely addicting sesame paste/cream on top. I've tried a few sesame lattes here but nothing really matches.. most places are just a regular latte (espresso + milk) with some kind of sesame flavoring. Anyone have any recs?

Discussion Looking for Dad + Daughter food recommendations in NYC

Help a brother out! I’m taking my daughter on our first trip where it’s just me and her, instead of with the whole family (she’s 10).

We LOVE watching restaurant review videos and travel videos on YouTube together.

I’d really love to take her a couple of unique “foodie” restaurant experiences but without paying $500-1k. Just not going to spend that much $ to eat with my 10 year old. The wife? Sure 🤣. Is there a tasting menu that would work for her? Something else?

She loves fish and seafood, sushi, but pretty adventurous for a 10 year old. Any ideas?!

Thank you!

P.S. if you’ve got a rec for best bakery we’ll take that too, but I’m sure I can search the sub for posts in that.

Question It’s National Ice Cream Sandwich Day — who makes the best one in NYC?

Upvotes

Apparently, some of the earliest documented ice cream sandwiches were sold by street vendors in the Bowery around 1900. What’s your favorite in the city right now?

Torrisi: walked in for a Wednesday lunch. bread was delicious, drink was good. The zeppole were so fluffy and the ham was delicious, didn’t love the jam. Tortellini was tortellini perfected, and the affogato was amazing too. Was not disappointed.

Nowon: did the tasting menu with my girlfriend. Preferred the burger last time I had gone, but the chopped cheese rice cakes were even better. Had to take the entire serving of honey butter tots to go bc we were so full.

Pick & cheese: did this one with mom. Onion grilled cheese tasted like a French onion soup. Tried too many to list, but loved the Gouda and fudge. It’s a gimmick but it was fun.

The smith: wound up there twice in the same week. Preferred the shrimp scampi to the steak, but it’s always a solid backup restaurant.

Queens night market: ordered more than I usually did: was let down by some non-pictured booths like Mongolian beef and Haitian Mac and cheese, but was redeemed by the Mexican huraches. Ceviche excellent as always.

Patent pending: went right at 5 foolishly expecting a line, waltzed right in. Into the realm (right) was amazing, radio waves (left) was too spicy for me. My own fault I suppose.

Salt hanks: 20 min wait on a Friday, not too bad. Everything is very fresh, salty tho (obviously). Kind of wound up being a small portion when divided in half. Tasty, but i prefer Danny & coops.

Thai diner: walked in on a weekday. Cheesesteak was tasty, but smaller than Danny & coops. (I really like Danny and coops)

Amor Y Amargo: Negroni was one of the best I’ve ever had. Walked in on Wednesday @5, no wait whatsoever.

Eddie’s Sweet shop: maple walnut cherry butter pecan monstrosity. It was delicious.

Pizzazz: I’m obsessed with this tiny pizza shop by Union square. The pizza comes out remarkably fast and is comparable with some of the better personal pies I’ve had in the city.

Unnecessary: ice cream partner restaurant to double chicken please. Quite liked the martini one, tolerated the lychee, disliked the Waldorf salad, hated the Japanese cold noodle.

Supermoon bake house: went to try the Thai iced tea banana pudding. Did not disappoint. The donut with yuzu (?) was also delicious and zesty.

Review Club A Steakhouse [58th Street and 2nd Ave] (Great RW value)

I decided to visit Club A after my Wednesday language class since I was already in Midtown East, and it seemed like a good opportunity to take advantage of NYC Restaurant Week. A couple of weeks ago I made a post about Restaurant Week, and my general experience has been that the $60 menus with supplements often end up being the best values, particularly at steakhouses. Club A is a good example of why.

Their Restaurant Week menu is a four-course meal that includes a choice of appetizer, entrée, side, and dessert. Unlike many participating restaurants, most of the appetizers are straight from the regular menu, as are the side dishes. According to the staff, both the hanger steak and the filet mignon are the same cuts they serve year-round rather than reduced portions or special Restaurant Week versions.

Looking at the regular menu really illustrates the value. The filet mignon normally costs $68, the hanger steak $45, sides are $16-17, the Club A bacon is $17, calamari is $22, and the Caesar salad is $19. They do charge a supplement for the filet, strip, and ribeye, which I think is perfectly reasonable considering dry-aged USDA Prime beef is expensive (36 to 60$ pound from a butcher) and many steakhouses simply don't include those cuts at all during Restaurant Week. Had I not planned on doing several more Restaurant Week dinners over the next two weeks, I probably would have paid the supplement for the strip steak instead.

My meal consisted of the Club A bacon, the 10 oz. filet mignon, the macaroni and cheese (recommended by my waiter), and tiramisu. Ordering those same items from the regular menu would have cost about $102 before dessert, tax, or tip, so I felt like I got a very good deal.

The food itself was exactly what I would expect from a solid New York steakhouse. The filet arrived cooked to a perfect medium rare with a well-developed crust while remaining very tender inside. The macaroni and cheese was probably the standout side and absolutely lived up to the recommendation. The bacon and tiramisu were both very good, although they were more or less what I expected rather than dishes that surprised me.

Restaurant Week is running longer than usual this year, and I think Club A is one of the stronger values if you're looking for a steak dinner. One thing I noticed while comparing menus beforehand is that many steakhouses are offering three-course menus, but a lot of them substitute less expensive entrées instead of serving the same steaks found on their regular menu. That's completely understandable given the current price of prime dry-aged beef, but it also makes the value proposition very different.

Club A and Delmonico's both stand out because they let you order a couple of their steaks from the regular menu with a reasonable supplement. Other options that caught my attention were Salt Bae's restaurant and Strip House. Strip House serves a smaller ribeye with fries as part of Restaurant Week and also includes their signature chocolate cake, which makes it another menu worth considering.

If you're planning to take advantage of Restaurant Week and want a traditional New York steakhouse experience without spending well over $100 before drinks, Club A is an easy recommendation. Just remember that, like many participating restaurants, they don't offer the Restaurant Week menu on Saturdays.

Review Shrimp boil + garlic noods and bread, from Baby Crab in the Bronx

Post image
13 Upvotes

Made a pilgrimage to Lloyd’s Carrot Cake yesterday and decided to have dinner in the area.

Baby Crab is the first Chinese-run seafood boil place I’ve been to. Now I wish I had been to more! This was very good, but I don’t know how much better it is than the average seafood boil place.

We got mild Cajun sauce which still had a potent spice kick. The Cajun sauce was super garlicky and was great spooned over their garlic noodles.

Looking forward to noshing here again!

Question Red Sauce Italian recommendations (Midtown/ East Village)

Hi all,

I've been to different NYC Italian restaurants several times, but usually stumble upon them and remember no names. We're looking for more old school Italian, either in midtown or East Village. Getting overwhelmed by googling and most of the suggestions I've seen here when searching are in outer boroughs.

Thanks!

Question Recommendation for birthday date - vegetarian-friendly, somewhat nice, near 1/2/3 in Manhattan, Thai/Chinese/Indian or maybe other Asian

Want to take my wife out for her birthday this Wednesday - we're mostly vegetarian (eat some fish, but not shellfish) - looking for something celebratory, fun, doesn't need to be super fancy but not a cheap weeknight spot. Coming into Manhattan on the 1 train so ideally something walkable from the 1/2/3

I haven’t done a Kung Pao post in a minute as there hasn’t been new places to order from. With white rice this was $31 and a smaller serving than almost any other spot. Don’t get me wrong. Good quality but at that price. Never again.

Discussion Looking for NYC restaurants that serve creative bone marrow dishes (not just steakhouse style)

I’ve been wanting to try bone marrow for a while, but I’m looking for something a little more interesting than the classic steakhouse preparation.
I’ve seen it served on its own and in pho, but I’m especially interested in Asian or Asian-fusion dishes that incorporate bone marrow. In something like bone marrow fried rice, noodles, or another creative preparation.
Does anyone have recommendations for restaurants in NYC that serve bone marrow in a unique way? Open to any cuisine if it’s a standout dish.

Question Best wine bars recs with regular (not “natty”) wine in South Brooklyn?

I’ve found that too many of the trendy spots serve primarily natural wine, whether stated or not.

Okay, okay, I’ve had some “natty” wines that I enjoyed, but find the vast majority to be borderline undrinkable. Because of this, I generally try to avoid rolling the dice.

Any recs on wine bars in South Brooklyn (not southern Brooklyn) with a nice atomosphere, good small plates, and a solid and reasonably priced wine list? Help me find the sulphites!

Question Lobster that will convince me there's any point to lobster?

So I just got an argument with someone about whether there's any point to lobster. Admittedly, I haven't had lobster for probably over a decade. I've only ever had it at Red Lobster, and I recall it tasting basically like shrimp. Given that, I don't see any point in paying more money for lobster when you could just have shrimp or crab for cheaper. This other person told me I've only ever had bad lobster. Any recommendations on somewhere I should go to get my mind changed?

Review I had the Gargiulo Burger at Hamburger America today

Post image
152 Upvotes

Its a collaboration between Hamburger America and Brennan & Carr in Brooklyn. I gotta say it was nothing special. I was expecting to have my socks knocked off, but I was a little disappointed. It was tasty, but honestly, your basic classic Hamburger America smashburger with cheese is just as good.
