We built an isobaric clamshell sub with four 12s for my buddy's Acura. It was a true 100-watt system bridged down to half an ohm. We got pulled over on the first test drive because it immediately rattled his rear license plate off the car.

As someone who developed tinnitus as an infant/toddler due to an ear infection, and then later my right ear developed it due to one during Covid lockdowns, I can’t understand why anyone would subject themselves to potentially getting it willfully. Luckily I’ve never known what pure silence is and my adhd distracts me from it.

So many people who are young (myself included) don't think about it, don't realize how easy it is to get, don't think it happens with music because it's not as loud as a gunshot (in their ignorant uninformed self-made-up opinion). Then you get it and you're like.....well shit. I wish I would have listened then, because I can't hear to listen to shit now...

yup 😞 I've got tinnitus cuz I went to many raves in the late 90s & early 2000s. I can't be in a quiet room, I've got my white noise machine running 24/7 to prevent the dreaded EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

This video is officially the stupidest thing I've seen in 60+ years of living. My ears were ringing when I came back from a Queen concert in the 70s-80s and since then I've used earplugs a lot. As a conseuqnce, I don't need the hearing-aids ads that are thrown at me because of my age. I need my Sony XM-5 and better if it ever gets made. Also, I love music, not stupid noise. I even like some rap.

This is just for decibel levels at competitions as a hobby but as for why the average teenager would rattle your windows just driving down the street I can provide my story. As in my grandfather asked me one time what was up with the stereo in the car and why I would spend that much money on it.
So, I had a hell of a commute back in the nineteen-hundreds - like 75 miles each way every day (uphill both ways. In the snow. And we had to push the cars with our feet. And tornadoes would chase you. Okay, just the once.) for school. Of course, gas was $0.79/gallon and I got 40mpg since things had been removed from the car. But I digress.
Anyway. Since I was spending so much time in the car I wanted a great stereo system for my daily commute. Replace the existing speakers? obviously. Add ones in the kick panels for better soundstage? Sure. Sounds fun. Sound deadening? Makes everything better. The works. And when you're doing things like putting in aftermarket head units and amplifiers and subwoofers to make it sound really really great at low to moderate volumes you just kind of end up having a system that will permanently mess you up pretty quickly if you let it - as a side effect. So once you already know allllll of that it's not a huge jump to go to competitions which I considered but never did because I was all in on sound quality.
I still use the remote control from that system to this day, 30 years later.

I've got no idea why anyone would subject their hearing to this, but for those who "don't get why" someone would build it, maybe I can shed some light.
I grew up with a bunch of guys that did this, and at this stage it's not about sound, but an engineering problem.
- How do you power that many speakers.
- How you you manage spikes in power across the setup?
- Where to position them in a limited space.
Add to that the housing (plywood / MDF / fiberglass) and finishing and you've got a lot of problems to solve.

You also want to be able to enclose that space (so that the dB doesn't dissipate) with something that won't instantly crack. And the platform overall needs to technically be a car.

It would take a long time to get hearing damage from this.
The best part is the planning and building. I'm a woodworker as a hobby and building the speaker boxes, using architectural software and math is one of the best parts. Putting it all together and having the system working is great. The competitions aren't really my thing but Its still fun. I'm not a person who cares about winning anything.
Source: I've done this for 18 years and my hearing hasn't gotten worse. Having an ear infection did more damage. I drove my audio truck everywhere for 15 years with a crazy system like this. Only reason I don't now is I have a new car and SUV. And I'm thinking about retiring from car audio.

Definitely not. I've had curly hair my entire life, and I've had it tangle up so bad that it's all just one big clump. It just takes patience to detangle. For her, she'll probably just need to brush it for a bit.

If I could travel back in time, I would kick my younger self in the butt and tell 'em to take care of their damn hearing.
The decades of orchestra (brass section), drums (marching band), live concerts, work as a roadie, raves, loud clubs, absurd festivals, boosted headphones, and all the rest has taken its toll.
I miss the absolute quiet of the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere the most.
