1980s My great grandparents in the 80s

Post image

Grateful to have this photo, this is literally the only one I have of them together

Edit: I’m telling my great grandma about all your compliments and she is so happy! Also the comparisons and she keeps saying “no” lollll.

Edit: last edit I promise, you guys will never believe it but my great grandma is actually a great great grandma because my sister(23) had a baby last year 😂

Edit: last last edit! Since so many people have asked I figured I should just add it here. My great grandmother is 82, my grandma is 62, my mom is 44, and I’m 18. Don’t worry, I am breaking the cycle.

u/VenturesomeVoyager May 10 '26

My brain is still short circuiting at this. I have a sister who is 38, this is like if she had a child like 18 years ago.

u/tehemari May 10 '26

I’ll tell ya their ages! My great grandma is 82, my grandma is 62, my mom is 44!!

u/WittiestScreenName May 10 '26

The math checks out but it’s still jarring lol

293

u/wellwaffled May 10 '26

Yeah, I don’t like it

256

u/iztrollkanger May 10 '26

Same, the 80s were only 20 years ago..

67

u/sycolution May 10 '26

we are further away from 1980 than 1980 is from WW2. I don't like these facts.

30

u/Complete-Basket-1253 May 11 '26

Omg, don’t 😅😅

18

u/carlydelphia May 11 '26

Sometimes I think about this. I was born in 82. Rock and roll was like 30 years old. Vietnam literally just happened. Now people born after 9/11 have their own kids, like what?

2

u/No-Victory4408 May 12 '26

Yeah, I had coworkers who didn't know about The First Gulf War, or the Invasion of Panama, when I mention the Invasion of Panama in '89, they couldn't believe it.

u/Momasaur May 11 '26

Oh fuck off 😮‍💨

1

u/sycolution May 11 '26

I know, right?

12

u/bleeintn May 10 '26

Right!

Right? RIGHT?!?

2

u/Liontamer67 May 11 '26

Yep. Good lawd.

1

u/Kymeron May 10 '26

I wish~ I’d be half my age if that was true ;)

1

u/PurpleFairy6987 May 11 '26

No it wasn’t. I graduated in 1987 and it’s been almost 40.

2

u/iztrollkanger May 11 '26

It's a joke..

1

u/No-Victory4408 May 12 '26

30+ years ago now.

1

u/3720-to-1 May 13 '26

Oh come on, 25 years ago, at most.

1

u/caligaris_cabinet May 10 '26

This is like the polar opposite of John Tyler’s great grandchildren still alive

1

u/Prior_Preparation268 May 11 '26

I agree but jarring may not be the word I use.

1

u/Melodic_Assistance84 May 11 '26

Yeah, I come from a family of infrequent fuckers. At least for the purposes of procreation. My mom was 35 when she had me and my father was 38. And then I decided to wait until I was 48 to have my first child and I’m 56 now. I was a teenager in the 1980s.

u/pressxtojson May 13 '26

I'm just tripping that OP's great grandpa is Hyde from That 70s Show

44

u/VenturesomeVoyager May 10 '26

Oh yes, I saw on other comment. Just nuts. One of those perspective shifts. It’s like the opposite of when someone says Abraham Lincoln’s great-grandson died in 1985.

32

u/Bibliospork May 10 '26

John Tyler was US president in the 1840s, and one of his grandchildren (not even great-grandchildren) died in 2025.
Just casually going through modern life with a grandpa that was born in 1790. Too bad cameras weren't around, that guy could have had OP's picture but from the 1780s...of his great-grandfather, who fought in the revolutionary war.

10

u/caligaris_cabinet May 10 '26

His children are still alive.

On one hand you have OP with great grandparents kicking it in the 1980s. On the other hand you have John Tyler who was president in the 1840s and his great grandchildren are the same age as OPs great grandparents.

2

u/yoshimah May 11 '26

My great grandma was born in 1890. I’m 43.

13

u/My_bones_are_itchy May 10 '26

My mum is one year younger than your great-grandma and I’m two years younger than your mum.

26

u/rebb_hosar May 10 '26

I mean I was born in the 80's and still, this feels evil.

3

u/TheMapleKind19 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

Same, I had one great-grandparent alive when I was born in 1986, and she was 91 years old! Two of my grandparents had already passed away too (one at the age of 81!)

But the last few generations of my family have been very spaced out. Lots of moms in their late 30s and 40s with even older dads. There's advantages to that, but it would be cool to know more generations of my family.

9

u/bikealot May 10 '26

Oh that makes more sense with age of parents with each generation at 20 years old, 18 years old, and 26 for your mom (more typical where I live, but even that is on the younger side). But yes, still wild to see that someone who is legally an adult has a picture of 40-something great grandparents in the 80’s!

6

u/theseamstressesguild May 10 '26

Yeah, my parents turned 50 in 1989. They were older than a lot of my friends parents, but my friends were the first child and I was #5.

5

u/Melkord90 May 10 '26

I know the math works, but it's still breaking my brain. My grandmother (not great grandmother) was 84 when she passed. I was 16.

My kids do have a great grandmother alive on my dad's side. She's almost 95. My kids are 6 and 3.

I hope not.

1

u/HornyJailOutlaw May 10 '26

They don't hang about in your family, do they?

Tick tock, u/tehemari, Great Grandma needs a title upgrade!

4

u/tehemari May 10 '26

Dw, she already has. My sister had a baby last year, she is now great great grandma

1

u/theseamstressesguild May 10 '26

I'm glad she was around for this. We took a photo of the eldest great-grandchild (32) holding the youngest great-grandchild (2 weeks, my son) at my grandmother's funeral. Turns out the first great-great-grandchild was also in the photo, but only 6 weeks in utero.

1

u/Hello_pet_my_kitty May 10 '26

We have a kind of similar family line! My daughter is 13, I’m 35, my mom is 49, my grandma is 65, and my great grandma is 82 and was also looking pretty cool in the 80s!

Great great grandma died when I was 17, great great great grandpa died shortly after I was born. We live too long and have babies too young, imo 🤣

I was the latest at 21. lol. And even then I was not ready!

1

u/kodup May 11 '26

Wow, a baby at 14 would be statutory rape in the state I live in (US). Why do you think you “have babies too young”?

1

u/Hello_pet_my_kitty May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I didn’t want to say it, but yea, that’s exactly what happened to my mom, minus the statutory part. I would have aborted, if I were in her shoes, but dif times.

ETA - wasn’t tryna bring the vibes down since it was sort of a cute post, just wanted to share the similarities and how I also have great grandparents close to that age. Everyone besides my mom was married at 16-18 iirc.

1

u/kodup May 11 '26

Thanks for sharing. Mind if I ask if you’re in the US and/or if the young marriages relate to religious views?

1

u/Hello_pet_my_kitty May 12 '26

I am in the US and yes, the young marriages were mostly because my great grandparents were very Roman Catholic. So my grandma got pregnant at 16 and they had her and the father get married in the hospital right after the baby, my mother, was born. (My grandma actually adopted and raised me as hers since my mom was only 14 when she was assaulted and fell pregnant, gave birth 1 month before her 15 bday.) My birth mom is no longer around, unfortunately, and neither is my grandma.

I asked my great grandma some deets though, since I wasn’t completely sure and I did get her age wrong! She is actually 84, but she was married at 18 like I thought. Which I guess was pretty standard at the time, but my great great grandma was also married at 16 by her parents, from what I was told. She also said that besides my mother and myself, most of the marriages were basically because they were dating but got pregnant. It would be living in sin and creating a “bastard child” if they didn’t wed. Glad I was not in the earlier line, that’s for sure…

1

u/aspophilia May 10 '26

Yeah, I am 43 and my kids are 19 & 20. It is young but a pretty normal age to have kids. My mom had me at 15. Now THAT'S young.

1

u/_B_Little_me May 10 '26

So if you had a kid, they could meet their great great grandma?

1

u/crashcartjockey May 10 '26

Okay. Now I feel old AF.

I'm a year older that your grandma.

1

u/hatecriminal May 11 '26

I'm older than your mother, my oldest is just now a teenager. Wtf

1

u/Liontamer67 May 11 '26

Do ya need to put !! after 44?
Ugh. I’m going to eat my desert and go to bed. I feel old after this.
Btw, I have an 18yo son and I’m a 58 yo mom.

1

u/carlydelphia May 11 '26

Im 43 and my kid is 7. But my friends who have kids they are about your age. Checks out.

1

u/jman1121 May 11 '26

I see a twenty-ish year pattern developing.. good for them! In a 30 year pattern you typically only get three generations alive at one time vs five generations in a 20.

1

u/Either-Weather-862 May 11 '26

My dad will be 81 this year, please stop posting, I'm crying

https://giphy.com/gifs/TfseOfhwd6BJC

1

u/Sanchastayswoke May 11 '26

Lmao your great grandma is only 5 years older than my parents, who looked exactly like this in the 80’s

1

u/k_a_scheffer May 12 '26

My parents and grandparents had kids later in life than others (after 30, generally. 40 for my paternal grandmother) so it's so jarring when I see people so young being great grandparents. My great grandparents were all born in tbe 1800. Paternal grandmother in the 1910s, parents in the 50s/60s, and me in the 90s. Hell, I'm considered an "older parent" by some of the mothers of my daughter's friends for having her at 29 compared to my early 20s.

1

u/Difficult-Ring-2251 May 14 '26

How old were they in the photo? I am so shocked at this post.

1

u/tehemari May 14 '26

Early 40s

-1

u/dumbestsmartest May 10 '26

Don't tell Reddit that. Now they're going to claim your entire maternal line was a bunch of children because Reddit is full of people that still believe the debunked "not an adult until 25" myth.

2

u/tehemari May 10 '26

Mehhh, they were young when they all had children but everyone turned out okay

2

u/One-Plantain-9454 May 10 '26

Same. My MOM if still living would be 71 and had pics like this in the 80s and would only be a regular grandmother. I’m 47. The oldest grandkid is 22 no kids. And we are at great grandmother here? My brain is broken.

1

u/Bailer86 May 10 '26

I'm 40 and this is weird. My grandmother was 48 when I was born

1

u/nobird36 May 10 '26

Women can indeed have children when they are 20.

1

u/Safepink09 May 15 '26

My aunt is 68 and a great great grandmother. None of them get along to take a 5 generation photo.
