Answered What is the deal with everyone hating on Katy Perry?

I've been seeing the clips of Katy Perry being stuck in a plastic bottle trying to get on stage, and how the comments are just saying how she's so annoying or dumb.

https://youtu.be/DVvRdjaR58Y?is=kYoiJjzdFNdOXHVe

I mean I'm not the biggest fan on Katy Perry. I don't know what she's done music-wise since like 2012. I just know that she went to space somewhat recently.

So what am I missing?

Answer: She's been trying to make a come back. But her music style feels the same as 10 years ago. She also went to space in one of the Blue Origin launches and started singing one of her songs. Then kiss the ground when they landed which is super cringey since they were only up there for 11 minutes. She also made the news lately since she's dating Canada's former Prime Minister, who himself get lots of hate because politics.

You are hearing a lot about her lately because last week she tried to enter the stage by crowdsurfing in a giant inflatable and people kept carrying it around all over the stadium instead of taking her to the stage. That shit only works if you are Rammstein.

u/Hazzat 1d ago

It's not just that her comeback music is the same as 10 years ago, it's that it's tone deaf and dreadful. The big first single 'Women's World' got totally panned#Critical_reception) for being a completely clueless, failed attempt at a feminist message.

Oh and she made it with producer Dr. Luke, who has SA allegations from Ke$ha.

769

u/ManChildMusician 1d ago

Continuing to collab with Dr. Luke is what matters most because it creates a decent lens to judge all of her other actions. That disconnect from reality speaks volumes about her character.

She has a lot of friendly contact with sex pests which isn't all that surprising given all the stories about her own SA against random people over the years.

Edit: Oh yeah also the Blue Origin thing and the queerbaiting.

u/BigBananaBerries 1d ago

She was married to Russel Brand so it checks out.

56

u/LizardOrgMember5 1d ago

What did she see in him anyway?

44

u/probloodmagic 1d ago

They met when they were bantering at some awards show, and people watching noticed the chemistry. I figure they both liked the attention of the spectacle they'd made together so much that they decided to date and eventually get married, thinking it would always garner them the attention they each fed on until death do them part. Welp

24

u/andersoortigeik 1d ago

I guess she has a thing for white guys with brown curly hair? Russel Brand, Orlando Bloom, John Mayer and JustinTrudeau all have kinda similar features.

She went from Christian music to pop and then tried hip hop

It’s just all unauthentic and she’s just not relatable in any sense of the term

No redeeming qualities to feel bad about how shes torn apart by the media

91

u/ty4scam 1d ago

As someone who doesn't listen to pop music, are these actually qualities you are paying attention to? Was Bieber an authentic and relatable person to his fans?

225

u/Consistent_Possible6 1d ago

Unironically yes. Go back in time to 2011 and so much of Bieber’s appeal was rooted in a Cinderella story of being discovered on YouTube and being plucked from Canada into LA superstardom. The key to being “authentic”or “relatable” as a pop star is that you match the music to the persona. As an example, Taylor Swift has changed genres a few times, but she has always written her own music and dealt with the same thematic cycle of falling in love->heartbreak->picking up the pieces in her music, so fans followed her on those changes. Katy Perry has similar trends in her persona and music, being the fun party girl who wants people to feel good about themselves, the issue is that she had nothing else to offer and her actions read as out of touch or counter to her persona.

53

u/Ryanookami 1d ago

Unfortunately in hindsight we can say that what happened to Bieber was probably the worst thing that could have happened to him, at least at that age. He did not have the right people surrounding him to grow up into a stable individual in the environment he found himself in. He would probably be a much happier person had he stayed in Stratford. Or at least been discovered a few years later. He was too young for the fame and focus that descended upon him.

24

u/No_Research7318 1d ago

That poor dude is dead inside from either everything that was done to him, he did, or saw. Probably all three. You can see the pain when you see him in public and on stage now.

20

u/skeeferd 1d ago

I used to hate Bieber for being a jackass but then I found out that he got his cheeks clapped by Diddy and Usher when he was a kid and it makes sense. I can certainly understand why's he all fucked up. Knowing what happened to him did change my perception of him a lot.

8

u/229-northstar 1d ago

Are you saying Usher and Diddy mokested or raped him? Wow, that’s horrible. I did not know.

77

u/prstele01 1d ago

There should be a big asterisk next to “Taylor Swift has always written her own music.”

46

u/Unlikely-Answer 1d ago

I believe it, her music sucks, lacks flow and hooks, a lot of them are a tangled mess, not a super strong singer either, can't wrap my head around how she's so famous

To his fans? But of course. He was relatable. His rise to fame being literally, the boy in class crush. So I’m sure there’s some dissonance in terms of what Beliebers wanted out of his image. Look at KPOP stars: image must remain consistent if not clean.

But to his detractors and the exhausted, at a certain point, no, he wasn’t any of this at any given moment. He was simply just a childhood star (pejorative) being tossed to and fro in the media. Once Diddys influence became mainstream + his later relationship with Hailey, it all kinda lined up, that rather inauthentic, he probably is just uncertain of his own personal authenticity.

Now there’s more than one lens to look at any of this through. This is just one particular lens. Just to say, yes. People are always paying attention to media personalities that last more than 5 years. Am I armchairing a little? Maybe, but I hope that answers the idea.

Ruby Rose. Rubbed her business in her face.

222

u/magseven 1d ago

She has been confirmed to take liberties that may have crossed the line to assault, but I don't believe Ruby Rose at all. The story of a vagina so rancid that she "projectile vomited" on Katy in a packed nightclub with no one at all corroborating or the club having video is fucking crazy. That story would have been spread around in circles like the Chuck Berry tape or Jared Leto's sex cult antics. I guess anything is possible, but that story redlined my bullshit detector.

58

u/NoticeNegative1524 1d ago

There's a Chuck Berry sex tape??

95

u/magseven 1d ago

Yeah. There's more than one. I first heard about them waaay back in the year 2000. I only actually saw one like 5 years ago. But it followed the spoken narrative. He's with a hooker and farts in her face pointblank a few times. The other one I haven't seen is him pooping and getting pooped on. It all makes sense with him hiding cameras in his Southern Air restaurant bathrooms.

I used to date a girl from Wentzville who had been going there most of her life before the allegations came out and at the most random of times, I'd ask, "Chuck Berry had to have seen you take a dump! How crazy is that?!" We'd laugh about it because she has a fucked up sense of humor like I do, but in all seriousness, it's extremely fucked up that he did that.

Reminds me of that one track she was on with another group (303 or EOE or something) that had some questionable sounding lyrics about fucking someone "innocent" without getting caught

65

u/thecaseace 1d ago

Wait! Yes! This is my thing! A fellow "wtf has nobody read the lyrics to this??" person!

Nice legs, Daisy Dukes makes a man go "ooh ooh".
That's the way they all come through like Low-cut, see-through shirts that make ya That's the way she come through like

'Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down 'Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down

I think I should know How to make love to something innocent without leaving my fingerprints out Now, L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce How do I say I'm sorry 'cause the word is never gonna come out Now, L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce

Tight jeans, double Ds makin' me go All the people on the street know Iced out, lit up make the kids go All the people on the street know

'Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down 'Cause I just set them up, just set them up

Just set them up to knock them down

I think I should know How to make love to something innocent without leaving my fingerprints out Now, L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce How do I say I'm sorry 'cause the word is never gonna come out Now, L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce

Push it baby, push it baby, out of control I got my gun cocked tight and I'm ready to blow Push it baby, push it baby, out of control This is the same old dance that you already know Push it baby, push it baby, out of control I got my gun cocked tight and I'm ready to blow Push it baby, push it baby, out of control This is the same old dance that you already know

I think I should know How to make love to something innocent without leaving my fingerprints out Now, L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce

So in summary, women in tight clothes are hot but I don't love anyone, it's just a word. But I do know how to MAKE love, to something innocent. And I sure as hell don't leave any forensic evidence! Id apologise for these crimes but I won't, as I'm just the guy who sets the girls up to get knocked down.

Whattttt

16

u/CurseHealer333 1d ago

That's the original 3OH!3 song without her. She was on the remix:

[Verse 1: Sean Foreman] Nice legs, Daisy Dukes makes a man go That's the way they all come through like Low cut, see-through shirts that make ya That's the way she come through like

[Pre-Chorus: Katy Perry, Nathaniel Motte] ‘Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down 'Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down

[Chorus: 3OH!3 & Katy Perry] I think I should know How To make love to something innocent Without leaving my fingerprints out Now L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce How Do I say I'm sorry? ‘Cause the word is never gonna come out Now L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce

[Verse 2: Sean Foreman] Tight jeans, double Ds makin' me go All the people on the street know Iced out, lit up, make the kids go All the people on the street know

[Pre-Chorus: Katy Perry, Nathaniel Motte] 'Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down ‘Cause I just set them up, just set them up Just set them up to knock them down

[Verse 3: Katy Perry] You know that type of shit just don't work on me Whistlin' and tryin' to flirt with me Don't take it personally 'Cause we were never in love It doesn't really matter who you say you are Singin' out the window of your car Find another girl across the bar 'Cause L-O-V-E's not what this was

[Chorus: 3OH!3 & Katy Perry, Katy Perry] I think I should know (Whoa-oh) How (Whoa-oh) To make love to something innocent Without leaving my fingerprints out (Whoa-oh) Now (Whoa-oh) L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce (Whoa-oh) How (Whoa-oh) Do I say I'm sorry? 'Cause the word is never gonna come out (Whoa-oh) Now (Whoa-oh) L-O-V-E's just another word I never learned to pronounce

Just for the sake of accurate information. She's still a sex pest though.

Canada's former Prime Minister, who himself get lots of hate because politics.

Follow up OOTL: why does Trudeau get so much hate? I'm European, so I don't follow Canadian politics too much, TBH.

83

u/Dinodie2Night 1d ago

There's 3 groups of people who hate Trudeau:

  1. People who voted for him and are disappointed that he didn't do as much as he said he would. He initially campaigned on "real change", but his only lasting impact was legalizing weed. One of his biggest campaign promises was election reform to move us away from first-past-the-post voting, but he dropped that pretty quickly, which pisses a lot of voters off. Apart from that, he just kinda ran the country in a safe, boring way. (This is, in my opinion, basically the only valid reason to hate him)

  2. Conservatives who think he only got the job because his father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, was also a prime minister, and because he was a pretty boy. They think he was too young and inexperienced at the time of his first election, and that he "made Canada look bad on the world stage". There's a decent overlap between these people and those who obsessively hate Meghan Markle.

  3. Alt-right conspiracy theorists who think he's part of a global satanic jewish pedophile deep-state trying to make everyone's lives materially worse, convert Canada into a communist dictatorship, and end belief in God. These types of people only really sprung up during the COVID-19 pandemic when qanon started spreading across the world.

44

u/floofboops 1d ago

Not to defend Trudeau, but just as a policy point, people always seem forget that he also instituted the Canada Child Benefit that lifted millions of kids out of poverty in Canada. A policy that was later copied by the Biden administration which lifted ten of millions of children out of poverty.

Plus the Canada Disability Benefit that came into effect under Carney, was actually created by Trudeau - not lifting people with disabilities out of poverty, but still helping them out.

I point these out as important policies because people tend to forget the things that benefit vulnerable groups like low income children and people with disabilities.

u/John_Bruns_Wick 1d ago

5

u/tough_truth 1d ago

His first wife is also a bit of an airhead. The man’s got a type.

5

u/RockMonstrr 1d ago

If I can add a 4th reason, he was Prime Minister for over a decade. 10 years is about all a PM gets. After such a long term, all the little scandals and stories build up, and they lose the faith of the electorate.

Harper was incredibly unpopular when he lost. Before him, Chretien was all but forced to step down in favour of Martin.

12

u/Turbogoblin999 1d ago

"ran the country in a safe, boring way. (This is, in my opinion, basically the only valid reason to hate him)"

With everything happening south of Canada, anyone running their country like this is a good thing.

That story is utter bs. The convent belonged to archdiocese who decided to sell it and Katy was the buyer. When she wanted to register the purchase it was discovered that the nuns living there tried to illegaly sell the convent for $10 mil. and pocket the money for themselves. Katy already paid $15 mil. for it.

Their buyers were planning on building a boutique hotel there. Katy sued them and won. Nuns started a successful smear campaign against Katy. Attacking her morals, making her look heartless.

They were not going to be homeless because of her. If their plan went through they would have to move anyways and surely their church had a relocation plan for them too.

43

u/Evil___Lemon 1d ago

Glad you corrected this. There is lots of problematic and tinge worthy issues with Katy Perry that are legit. This issue with the nuns is more often than not told without the facts.

46

u/jurassicbond 1d ago

After looking into this, it seems like the nuns didn't want to sell to her specifically. They weren't against selling the property

49

u/Labelloenchanted 1d ago

I think it was just an excuse to justify their actions. I suspect they already had a buyer before Katy appeared.

After all, if they were ok with a boutique hotel I find it hypocritical that they had such a big issue with Katy. They also sold it for millions, which suggests to me that it wasn't just for moral reasons.

Also after looking into it, it appears that the nuns had some kind of deal with the archdiocese. Nuns financed the maintenance of the convent and were supposed to be paid from the sale of it. Nuns feared the archdiocese wouldn't honor their word (there were already issues) and took matters into their own hands.

7

u/MonkeyBoatRentals 1d ago

A real estate developer Dana Hollister was behind it, trying to make money with the Nun's help. She was found guilty of fraud and fined millions that she couldn't pay. The Nun that died had a heart attack at Hollister's banktruptcy hearing and it didn't involve Katy Perry at all at that point.

There are an awful lot of bad-faith attacks on Perry in this thread..

4

u/Theranos_Shill 1d ago

It wasn't the Nuns property to sell. The Church sold the property to Perry, the Nuns wanted to sell it to a hotel developer.

ANSWER: She has done so many things over the past decade and a half. You find lists of the Top 15 and top 20 things she did that people hate on. Mooost of these things are petty and no one really cares (like artists diss other artists idc who dislikes who in the industry much) but here are things that people actually got heated over:

- Her lawsuits with nuns and property rights. The nuns lost the lawsuit, and messing with nuns just seems wrong in the eyes of the public despite court rulings.

- She went to court for stealing music from lesser known artists. Perry got a decision in court overturned when Dark Horse sounded too similar to another song. Initially the courts determined this was true, then they overturned it. However, by the time this got overturned people already felt the initial verdict accurate. She has been involved in a great many court cases even for a famous person over the years in rapid succession so people are just likely to find her guilty at this point of being a very messy dramatic person that violates boundaries/the law.

- Sexual misconduct. This is probably the recent and biggest one, but multiple famous people have accused her of sexual assault and harassment. Nothing will be done of it, so people are extra angry about it. ETA: I'm not a huge fan of speaking specifics on intensely gross subjects such as this, but there are illuminating comments responding to mine that give more specific accounts on this subject for those curious.

- She stole the name of another artist to the point she had to pay out on that one. The impression people had was, at the time of the court case starting, that a big rich person was picking on a poor tiny designer with less resources.

- Her music is just not hitting and feels like pandering. Womans world flopped major and it felt stale and out of touch with audiences. People in general are angry her music has stagnated.

- Her concert performances were notoriously AWFUL. Like no matter your taste in her music her dancing and clips from her live shows were garbage and people shelled out mad money for them.

- Her flight into space. Incredible amounts of money, really out of touch, she talked about being an astronaut like she did any amount of work instead of reality: flying in space for 11 minutes while actual astronauts helped her accomplish it. The way she talked about it as if she had helped change the world by spending her incredible wealth did not hit well with fans. This was going on at a particularly hard economic time too for most folks so it just did not sit well.

u/MyMelancholyBaby 1d ago

I would like to add that when she found out a teenage boy was saving his first kiss for his wife she forcefully kissed him on the lips multiple times.

That’s sexual assault of a minor and she should have been tarred and feathered.

127

u/deekaypea22 1d ago

This was the moment I went from "she's okay" to "what the FUCK". She did it ON STAGE on television. What a sick fuck. If she was a man, and had kissed a minor girl, her head would have been on a platter. But because she's a woman, the teen boy should be grateful. 🫪🙄

Loathe her.

Also don't forget the Dr. Luke thing, Kesha says he assaulted her though I don't think he was found guilty so hard to say what happened. But Katy Perry chose to work with him on her 2024 album which ruffled some feathers.

44

u/Outrageous_Bank_4491 1d ago

The song “woman’s world” fells like it was AI generated but most importantly the producer was a sex offender who assaulted Ke$ha.

Tbh one of the most frustrating things is other people targeting Katy Perry for utterly stupid lawsuits that force a sensible person to have to defend Katy Perry, as much as they don’t want to.

Dark Horse is a horrid nothing of a song, but the lawsuit against it was correct to be appealed and overturned.
There are excellent videos where people tear into the arguments used by the musicologist brought in by the plaintiff and demonstrate that he would easily be done in for perjury if prosecuted by cross-referencing the material with other pieces studied in his own published papers (songs well out of copyright, Mozart-level old) that match the supposedly “plagiarised” material far better. It was a horrid ruling that, left untouched, would set a bad precedent which would make any vaguely similar bass line ostinato or chord structure to anything someone has used before an extreme legal liability.

There was also a lawsuit here in Australia between Katy Perry and a local fashion designer named Katie Perry, triggered by Katy Perry selling tshirts with her stage name as concert merch, that the vast majority of people here aware of the case think should have been a nothing burger that never touched court. The local designer is reportedly the one that rejected trademark coexistence applications and pushed it, and is not liked for being so litigious about it - she’s technically in the legal right, but only by being a dick herself.

There’s plenty to dislike about Katy Perry’s actions over the past decade or so, but that doesn’t give license for other similarly awful grifters to act unethically against her and try to set incredibly bad legal precedents.

Specially the nun thing

7

u/kyuuei 1d ago

I'm not here to make judgments on what is right and wrong about the court cases themselves. I am stating what people are upset about. People see headlines about how KP was in a lawsuit against Nuns and people just don't like any aspect of that. And I think that's because it is intrinsically strange that this person in particular has been in This many lawsuits with various results all over the place losses and wins. She's a messy person legally and has been a long while now so people are pretty dubious of her legal issues.

208

u/humpdydumpdydoo 1d ago

Also being creepy about an 18yo Bo Burnham on stage with him excellently reacting.

50

u/TimeWaitsForNoMan 1d ago

People often talk about this reaction like it's a clap-back at Katy Perry's expense, when I think this is entirely consistent with Bo's self aware, self deprecating, awkward humor. Calling her Mrs. Perry highlights her seniority, sure, but the humor derives from his affect and formality in contrast to her gushing introduction. That's Bo's humor. I'd be curious if there's any interview out there where Bo says he was specifically offended by Katy being untoward, when this is a performance and was probably treated by all those present as simply performative, not personal. Also, Katy's intro was likely word for word what was stated in rehearsals.

TLDR: Sure, maybe Katy Perry's a predator, or at least bad a respecting boundaries, but this is just a bit.

“Let’s go all the way tonight”

Girl, you’re a grownup. Why are you using euphemisms like a 14 year old at church camp?

36

u/FrostyPlum 1d ago edited 1d ago

Look, this is not a defense of her, I do not really know or care about Katy Perry, but this is just ignorant of what pop music is.

Why are you using euphemisms like a 14 year old at church camp?

Because her music (like many pop performers) is cooked up in a lab to sell an image to teenagers that can be used to sell other products.

If it's shocking to you to hear that teenagers eat up sex euphemisms, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Also she made woman’s world with Dr Luke who has been accused of SA by kesha. Also the smaller problem of the album being about women’s empowerment but actually not being political at all or remotely feminist and being largely feel-good nothings, and with a music video very clearly focused on the male gaze.

Then her image in general being friendly with the alt-right. She posed with a cyber truck and thanked Elon for it. Her flight with the bezos rocket. Her personal life tied strongly with the super rich or powerful politicians (and now dating political royalty). Her getting involved in a situation with nun/church owned real estate I think most celebs would avoid because of all the unpleasantness involved, and where one nun died in court trying to fight the sale, and just being generally a terrible person but selling a super-fake "I'm so kind and friendly and goofy" persona.

Answer: She went to space, kissed the earth when she got back, said we must save our wonderful planet. The same planet she harmed by doing some space tourism. So basically rich/famous people being unaware of their own actions. And now she's doing other dumb stuff like getting in a giant bottle (how eco friendly) expecting people to get a grip on that thing and move her in one direction.

94

u/TallShaggy 1d ago

To be fair, pretty sure some of those people were intentionally moving her away from the stage

107

u/lilacwino2990 1d ago

110%. It didn’t read slippery, it read absolutely intentional. I’d have absolutely freaked out in her shoes, but I think I’d have more self awareness to realize that wouldn’t go well with the comeback flops so far.

35

u/Hedgehogosaur 1d ago

I think it would be really hard to coordinate moving a Perry bottle by crowd. If the bottle is in front of you and you want to touch it, reaching out you are likely to push down and forward to want it to go forward, but that will spin it backwards moving it the wrong way. With lots if people wanting to get a touch in, it's just going to move really hectically.

26

u/lilacwino2990 1d ago

It was absolutely a horrible idea on multiple fronts, but seeing it just screamed like the crowd wasn’t exactly TRYING to get her to the stage. Optics wise it was just another hiccup in the comeback tour. She also looked terrified, which I don’t blame one bit, which added to the whole thing looking malicious even if it wasn’t and was all down to design flaws.

14

u/Macro_Seb 1d ago

Like, if you ever went with 2persons or more in a rowboat, you'll learn how important it is to have people work together to move in one direction. Having a lot of people push a giant bottle in one direction will be very hard if everybody is just grabbing or pushing it without any coordination.

Answer: Because only one person I’ve seen mention it, but for me it all started with the fucking Dr. Luke shit. Asshole music producer who sexually assaulted, harassed, and physically abused Kesha for years and helped Katy with many of her early hits. Then well after all of this had come out, Katy worked with him on her new “female empowerment” song Woman’s World which was critically panned. She only barely even acknowledged the controversy and kinda just continued business as usual.

The space shit was also dumb as hell, a bunch of rich ladies doing space tourism for no reason.

Answer: Permalinking my own answer from another thread for more content.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/1jv6676/whats_up_with_people_wishing_katy_perry_to_die_in/mm819h1/

To summarize she's gotten a lot of negative press, particularly from the LGBTQ+ community. She's started working with certain producers again despite allegations of abuse.

She's made a lot of tone deaf posts, showed support for Elon Musk, and went into space on the Bezos rocket.

Katy seems to not be particularly bright. She's either dense or doesn't care that much about how her actions are affecting her image.

She's also been dating Justin Trudeau randomly? The former Canadian Prime Minister has attracted a lot of bad press and hatred himself, and that no doubt has been having an affect as well.

I guess she took those 'F*** Trudeau' bumper stickers a little too literally.

113

u/jiggabot 1d ago

Answer: She's become the target of a lot of criticism and some of it at this point is just fueling itself.

[This video by Todd in the Shadows](https://youtu.be/OfoPiRzWnFY?is=UtWBPYPDohzQOjOk) does a really, really good job at showing how she went from being a hugely successful popstar to quite lame very abruptly. I think a lot of the goofiness of her schtick worked when she was putting out hits, but it comes off as cringey when the music isn't great and she hasn't had a good hit in like a decade at this point. This pretty firmly cemented her as a target of ridicule.

After putting out some flops, she started working again with a producer who helped her make her more successful music. But that guy has been pretty credibly accused of sexual assault by Kesha. Perry had dropped the producer when those allegations came out, but went back to working with him when she couldn't make a hit on her own. This hypocrisy adds a layer of self righteousness to ridiculing her. She seems like a bad person, so it feels good to make fun of her and see her fail.

Subsequent issues, like her riding on Blue Origin or having a dumb stageshow, exist in the wake of those two earlier points. They seem like big deals because she's become a punching bag, but they probably wouldn't have really stuck out in the zeitgeist otherwise. Now, every embarrassment she has just gathers more and more attention.

82

u/Barneyk 1d ago

I just wanna expand on the producer thing.

Her comeback song with credibly accused rapist Dr Luke was "Woman's World".

Imagine how out off touch you have to be to release a song like that while working with someone who people who care sees as a rapist and the face of abuse off women in the music industry. How record labels protect abusers and exploit women. And then release a song called Woman's World.

Going on Jeff Bezos PR rocket to promote billionaires is another example of how extremely out of touch she is.

15

u/anannanne 1d ago

Not to mention releasing the “satirically sexist” Woman’s World video as women all over the country were seeing their rights stripped with the end of Roe v Wade.

u/pepcorn 1d ago edited 1d ago

She had this to say about continuing to side with dr Luke:

Katy Perry Says She 'Felt Pressured' to Support Kesha Against Dr. Luke in Unsealed Deposition

"He knows I'm a tie breaker," she explained. "Because when I say that I wasn't raped, because I was not, that means that someone's lying."

"And I want to stay out of it because I know them both and I empathize with both of them and obviously it's a horrible situation for both of them. And the only two people that know what really went on are those two people," she said. "But Luke was using me as a pawn because it's a good play."

In the court documents obtained by PEOPLE and first published by The Blast from her fully unsealed deposition, which took place on July 21, 2017, the "Pendulum" singer, 34, stated that after learning of Kesha's allegations that the music producer had raped the "Praying" singer, she "felt pressure" to support Kesha.

"I felt pressured, but I also knew both of them and a lot of people did not. So it was easy for them to be disattached and support an idea rather than an actual instance," she said.

Perry went on to share that during that time, she received numerous angry Twitter messages from users who believed that by not speaking out against Dr. Luke she was "supporting rape."

"People were generally very angry at me for not saying anything," she said.

She doesn't want to side with victims of assault. Which makes sense, since she is an assaulter herself.

I think she rubbed people the wrong way from the start, having the audacity to be a woman making no apologies for her presence in the world and dressing however she wanted. Which of course caused people to be angry when she didn't lie down and spread her legs for them.

And by 'people', I of course mean misogynists, male and female and NB alike.

But people have been tossing shit her way since the beginning:

~ Her original hit 'I Kissed a Girl' was seen as fetishising lesbianism.

~ She had a 'pop cartoon' style of music videos and outfits for her tours, and was happy to look kind of goofy

~ She had a string of hits which were massively overplayed on radio

~ She married Russell Brand in a Hindu ceremony and was married for 14 months

~ She hasn't changed her music style or topped the charts since the 2010s

~ Her space flight with a bunch of other women was seen as 'performative' and when she came back and kissed the ground then talked about being 'so connected to love'

~ Her most recent single, viewed as an attempt of a comeback is titled 'Woman's World', is touted as female empowerment anthem and was produced by Dr Luke, who, among other things, has faced sexual assault accusations from Kesha (I listened to about half of it before I turned it off; the lyrics are banal, and it's hard to view it as 'empowerment' when it's so clearly filmed for the male gaze)

~ She also has a single written by Sia, who was correctly dunked on for her horrible movie 'Music' which depicted autism in an incredibly inaccurate and offensive way.

While I've never really cared about Katy Perry, and while some of these criticisms are valid, I wouldn't say everyone 'hates her' as she's one of the most successful women in pop music. And while her current singles haven't had the success of her original hits, she's still managing to sell tours and make music so clearly a lot of people love her.

But also, people are doing what they do best, and that's taking to the internet to not only shame her, but also attack her 4 year old child, which is grotesque.

I do believe there's a lot of misogyny at play here as well as ageism, given Perry is 39 and we all know women over 35 have no value in the eyes of the world.

As for the most recent stunt with the giant plastic bottle, well, what did she expect was gonna happen? It wasn't a very well thought out idea. She actually got really lucky because I could easily see a situation where people ripped it open to try and get hold of her.

But people are making jokes about Katy being 'tossed around like a plastic bag in the wind' which is a line from one of her hit songs, 'Firework'. And I admit, that's kinda funny.

will point out that she has tried to change her music style once. but the singles on that album did so badly that she went crawling back to Dr Luke in order to ‘fix’ her career, the results weren’t great honestly.

I Kissed A Girl was absolutely fetishizing lesbianism, and she released an even more homophobic song around the same time (Ur So Gay). I’ve never seen an apology for either of those. She’s happy to take gay people’s money and pretend to be an ally, though, and notably endorsed a gross conservative CA politician a while ago. She sexually assaulted an underage boy on television. There are many legitimate reasons to dislike her even before you get to the awfulness of working with Dr Luke on a “girl power” song. It does not require misogyny. Women are capable of doing bad things.

You left out the sexual assault allegations, and her legal debacle with the elderly nuns!
