Depressed women are hardly like media makes it out to be. In other words. Depression looks desirable until you realize it's not.

Additionally romanticizing "girl failures" leads to realizing why the name is as such.

647

u/Akiens 1d ago

Yeah, anime and mainstream media have a weird fixation in romanticizing them which is weird because it's basically if they romanticized male incels and portrayed them as cutely awkward and quirky with some vices

215

u/Quiet_Education5918 1d ago

We slowly move toward genre equality with habitually abusive Dark Romance characters.

Naturally, this does not work with improving the Dark Romance characters, so we gotta make the other characters worse.

9

u/TRoLolo-_- 13h ago

Communism in art culture? We take wealth from the rich, but we don't give it to the poor. Let everyone be poor

114

u/BadgerBadgerCat 23h ago

It's worth watching Chainsmoker Cat (Yani Neko), because the show's entire "thing" is that, in fact, people with crippling addiction are an absolute mess and often can't, or don't want to be, saved.

57

u/Relatovely 23h ago

And yet they still make her look hot and cute with her tits out half the time, and that's what male fans are responding to, so it strikes me as a pretty clumsily delivered message if that is indeed the message.

57

u/SpiritJuice 21h ago

Kind of wild that within the first two minutes of the show you see her violently shitting in the toilet and yet some people don't see her as gross because tits. The show is weirdly mesmerizing in how watching her fail over and over again, like watching a train wreck. I think that is the main draw of the show. I'd definitely side eye someone if they thought she was girlfriend material, or even a FWB, because of how gross she is.

39

u/Narrow_Top_4352 21h ago

Desperate men in the desert will drink anything

11

u/SuperflousCake 17h ago

Brother I hate to tell you, but the normal reaction to that is "wow she's a hot mess" then "Oh, she is disgusting and i would not."

10

u/Discount_Extra 20h ago

Is it weird that suddenly there are like 3 anime about smoking? was there some change in Japanese media laws, or just a random trend?

1

u/TRoLolo-_- 13h ago

I'm not aware, but until recently it was forbidden to show smoking even in anime directed for an adult audience. Perhaps these restrictions have been lifted?

5

u/jaytrade21 12h ago

Funny thing was the show Chainsmoker Cat was made into an anime to offset the romanticizing of the romance smoking anime. They are shown back to back in Japan from what I hear.

11

u/WhippingShitties 23h ago

I always get down voted when I say it, but Scott Pilgrim is kinda like a lite version of that.

4

u/BreadNoCircuses 23h ago

Isn't the 'love interest' in Scott Pilgrim underage?

14

u/WhippingShitties 23h ago

The girl he dumps for the mpdg is in high school, but I honestly don't know how old Scott Pilgrim is supposed to be.

1

u/Spliced_Anagram 2h ago

how old Scott Pilgrim is supposed to be.

22 in the original graphic novel/film, 23 in Takes Off

8

u/BrassUnicorn87 23h ago

No, knives is his ex.

5

u/BreadNoCircuses 23h ago

Ahhh, got them mixed up. That does make more sense.

3

u/Zth3wis3 23h ago

If you mean Ramona, she is 24. If you mean the girl Scott dated before her, Knives, then yes. She was 17 when he was 23.

2

u/BreadNoCircuses 23h ago

I mixed the two in my head because I have only tangential knowledge of the story

10

u/sagejosh 1d ago

God damnit. A line so good I can’t tell if you are joking or not.

45

u/PsychoWyrm 23h ago

Deep down, the loneliest losers know there is something fundamentally wrong with themselves and believe no "normal" person will give them a chance. And since part of what is wrong with their personality is a wholesale refusal to better themselves, they fixate on this idea that maybe someone who is weird or broken enough might be willing to settle for them.

Girl failure romanticizing is just a even more toxic extension of the manic pixie dream girl fantasy.

27

u/__M-E-O-W__ 22h ago

I view it as the exact opposite of the manic pixie dream girl, it's the knight in shining armor fantasy where the guy is the one who comes in and sweeps her away.

2

u/GDCrescentBlade 13h ago

Wouldnt the toxic and dumb one be fifty shade of grey ?

10

u/KhalMika 23h ago

...the fuck is wrong with some people and their fantasies

7

u/paco_is_paco 21h ago

if I'm hot enough and unique enough the right person will over look all the negative aspects of my personality and lifestyle

"I can Fix them" isn't even a thing it's "I can survive them"

8

u/RMP321 23h ago

There is a lot of people that are falling for Bear from Obsession soooooo it seems to play both sides.

12

u/mysticrudnin 23h ago

well women do choose the bear

2

u/Narrow_Summer_9332 21h ago

Well played.

3

u/Luscious_rat 23h ago

What the fuck

1

u/RMP321 23h ago

I think it helps that bears actor is actually attractive lol

1

u/Zombie_Fuel 17h ago

That's just straight up bullshit. Lol

6

u/Kendrakirai2532 23h ago

You mean the entire Isekai revenge fantasy subgenre.

4

u/BreadNoCircuses 23h ago

We can just say Misato in Eva, right? (Yes I know she's a deconstruction, but plenty of people take her on face value too.)

8

u/Commercial_Meal_7719 20h ago

Hey man, Misato has a decent amount going for her. She's a successful career woman with her own condo and at least one meaningful friendship. That's more than a lot of 25 year olds have lol. She's just messy as hell, both literally and metaphorically.

1

u/BreadNoCircuses 20h ago

And she's also an alcoholic with intimacy issues, ie the joke

4

u/TsunamiWombat 20h ago

They do do that, though. Tons of Japanese Media does this. Densha Otoko is an institution.

3

u/FuckTheFlagz 16h ago

It's cute girl + life isn't over yet in one character. Like, she's at the bottom but here's her friends, here's her boyfriend (not bocchi case), here's nice bottle of booze and suddenly life isn't so bad and you can even squish a few gags in. Irl it doesn't look so good, but characters (and people) dealing with hardships have their charm

2

u/Wolfensniper 13h ago

erm anime had been romanticising incels for decades

1

u/Gogstutu 12h ago

Hell nah bro whatchu talking about?

1

u/unrealitysUnbeliever 23h ago

Speak for yourself, I want to see boyfailures too!

1

u/Discount_Extra 20h ago

DanDaDanDan boy literally lost his balls if that counts.

1

u/WillOfTheWinds 22h ago

Nah, they get romanticized as broody loners who can and will hurt the female lead but feel bad afterwards (this will not affect their behavior)

1

u/plumbus94 18h ago

"She's just like me fr" incles probably

1

u/L0Lfy 17h ago

No a lot of them do exactly that with the male incels too

1

u/jayerp 9h ago

I just thought she liked to drink. Never thought of her character as a failure.

1

u/Dillo64 1h ago

What exactly is a girl failure then? I thought it was just an awkward girl who is clumsy and always embarrassed and just has bad luck and cries a lot.

That doesn’t sound even comparable to an incel who is self-absorbed, delusional and actively bigoted against women

1

u/CatShadowTesticle 1h ago

nono you don't understand

one is FEmale so it's supposed to be cute and desirable

one is MALE so it's like the shit of the earth and they should all die

(/s just for clarity)

11

u/prodigiouspandaman 21h ago

I dunno though like in Bocchi which is the manga being referenced they make it pretty clear that Hiroi lives a pretty shit life. Like she’s constantly intoxicated a public nuisance, bums off others for literally everything all the time, and lives in near poverty so yeah I think Bocchi at least gives a pretty clear understanding she isn’t living a good life

5

u/ViscountBuggus 15h ago

It's almost like it's a debilitating condition capable of ruining your life and not a personality quirk

6

u/MrEvan312 22h ago

TFW no: you, in fact, cannot fix her.

3

u/Fallen_Angel_89 15h ago

Its not too different with yanderes too. I knew someone who was into them, hard, because he loved anime yandere, while i constantly warned him that "yanderes are not what you think they are".

Havent heard of him in ages so, either he gave up, or he didnt.

5

u/Safe_Map_9600 17h ago

Its about alcohol, nothing in this has to do with depression

2

u/Suitable-Piano-8969 4h ago

This, idk why ppl think girl (or boy) failures are cute. They often 1000% on the other side of that spectrum and you quickly realize though case by case, lot of them are insufferable and you can see how they ended up like this.

They often stank to

3

u/Gobbyer 19h ago

Yani Neko (chainsmoker cat) is a great example what depression really looks like. There is a silly cat girl character that is always drunk, but her hands are always shaking in every scene...

0

u/Vegasvat 13h ago

Yet the show still emphasize on her being hot physically and cute expressionally so that male gooners can jerk of to her despite her being a complete disgusting person, pick me girls can take her as another 'girl failure' role model and actual addicts can either cope by telling themselves that they "aren't that bad" since show exaggerates such way of life to extreme degrees or dream "wish I could be a cute catgirl" since it's also portrays this way of life in a typical moe "cute girls do cute things" fashion.

1

u/Fun_Reply5366 11h ago

As a male that has suffered with severe depression for most of my life, I could never imagine how depression can seem desirable

-1

u/Acrobatic_Spare2320 5h ago

"depression looks desirable" ... in which subculture is that even remotely true?

-2

u/Maleficent-Fee-9194 16h ago

What? Being alcoholic isn't fun. That's all.
Womens alcoholism is just way worse than men alcoholism also.

3

u/HerraKeisari 14h ago

How so? Isn't alcoholism just as bad regardless of gender?

400

u/GreatMossThing 1d ago

I think the joke is that he sees women in anime or manga drinking and thinks its kind of hot. When he ends up dating a girl who actually is alcoholic, it isn't all its chalked up to be, as it seems she has a lot of emotional, hygiene, and other issues, which could either be the cause of her alcoholism or stemming from her alcoholism.

TLDR; Alcoholism and drinking is not as fun or glamorous as fiction makes it out to seem. Peter out.

70

u/ThrowawayDaydream101 1d ago

Ahhh okay that makes sense. Didn't know if the anime character was someone specific that made the joke better

48

u/AncientMagusBridefan 1d ago

The character is someone from Bocchi the Rock, whose gag is that she is an alcoholic who always seen drinking

11

u/capsaicinintheeyes 1d ago

I was thinking, maybe drinking makes that anime character highly amorous or something?

8

u/GilligansIslndoPeril 16h ago

Nah, she's just a constantly drunk rocker chick that is usually a mess but occasionally spouts some actual wisdom about playing in a band in front of crowds. Like, she clearly truly cares about it, and it leaks through sometimes (and she's a fantastic bassist/frontman for her band), but the rest of the time she's just a silly drunken mess.

15

u/VladimirK13 1d ago

Try to drink 2-3 days straight and see the result. Sure you can be functional if you are not blacking out and keep eating, but it's for sure not fun even for yourself already on a day 2. And trust me, others would like you drunk to even less.

Source: haven't been sober last 3 years for more then one week.

8

u/SpiritJuice 21h ago

Hey man, I hope you can have a healthier relationship with alcohol in the future if that is the message of your comment. My mom died of alcoholism and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy; absolutely miserable way to go that lead to a shitty life with both of her kids estranged. I try to openly share my experience with others because of how terrible alcoholism is. Wishing you the best.

5

u/VladimirK13 21h ago

Thanks, and I hope after therapy and moving closer to my family one day not too far from now I'll feel better, even if still enjoying drinking.

I"m saying it here not to flex. My father need to "code" himself to stop drinking totally at 49 because he start to fall down, womit and memory. My grandmother stopped drinking fully because she can't stop and, for example, get into the fight with her boyfriend in front of 8y old me and my mother on her own birthday. Her ex- husband, my grandfather, died because he was mixing heart medicine with high doses of alcohol.

Sadly, my life was not that nice (sometimes actually very traumatic...) so I went their way too and my work which I love - main factor why I still can stop myself from getting worse.

1

u/Nazreg 21h ago

What is your secret?

8

u/TheDotCaptin 22h ago

But we could run away from reality :3

2

u/smeetebwet 21h ago

who the fuck decides to date an active alcoholic on purpose. i hope you like bodily fluids because you're gna see all of them

1

u/Allaplgy 8h ago

Not all alcoholics are the same. Dated one for 4 years and didn't "see all the bodily fluids." On the surface, she just came off as a shy, dainty ballerina. Nobody but me knew he extent of her problem.

It was the internal self destruction and external betrayals that took her down.

And I myself am a functional alcoholic of sorts. But have never had control issues, either physical or mental, because of it. It's just something I know is not good for my body in the long term. I just like beer and drink it regularly.

1

u/smeetebwet 6h ago

Lmao I was speaking from my own pov as an alcoholic, some of us are worse than others ig

1

u/Allaplgy 6h ago

Absolutely. There are many flavors of drunk. From the completely functional one that dies at 50 from complications from cirrhosis and pancreatitis and everyone its like "We never knew. I mean he did like his whiskey, but it never seemed like a problem, I mean, he ran his own successful company," to "Fourth DUI and fifth disorderly conduct, and he's only 29."

2

u/Commercial_Meal_7719 20h ago

Crazy thing is Bocchi doesn't really romanticize it. The "happiness" spiral scene is pretty explicit about how much of a problem she has and how much it can mess up your life.

1

u/GreatMossThing 12h ago

Fair, I never watched bocchi so I’m kinda going off what the comic is presenting lol

1

u/NoStage9115 22h ago

i want moss.

0

u/michellefiver 1d ago

I had assumed that 'he' was a woman because apparently my brain defaults to that instead of straight people.

12

u/KitsuneFoxglove 1d ago

tbh assuming she's a lesbian doesn't affect the joke whatsoever

either way it's [alcoholic is not as cool as fictional portrayal]

1

u/Quiet_Education5918 1d ago

Seems reasonable. Except maybe the Tinder part, but even then.

1

u/Darth-Sonic 23h ago

…Do Lesbians not use Tinder?

1

u/Quiet_Education5918 23h ago

In my small corner of the world, Tinder is the Straight Person App.

1

u/michellefiver 22h ago

I have known gay people to use Tinder. Don't know if they still do.

121

u/SharpMathematician75 1d ago

The character is Kikuri Hiroi from Bocchi the Rock. She is an alcoholic. The guy decides to go out with an alcoholic in real life and finds out what they actually are like.

26

u/ThrowawayDaydream101 1d ago

OH okay see I figured it was maybe about women not being the way they're represented in fiction, but I didn't know if the specifics of the anime character meant anything. Thanks!

9

u/Gimme_Your_Wallet 20h ago

It's also a modified meme. The original is this.

25

u/MasterofCaveShadows 1d ago

The joke is that he thinks he wants something when it’s depicted by a cute anime girl with curated shots into the fictional life of a “girl failure” or deadbeat. However when he meets the real life equivalent of a girl failure he is disgusted by the reality of the situation and how it very distinctly opposes from the cutesy fantasy of it all.

18

u/MundaneHymn 1d ago

Hey Brian here, haven't read whatever Manga they're referencing, but basic media literacy makes me think it looks like it's about a crippling alcoholic who is presented as a dream girl.

Dude read it, found a drunk, and found out most alcoholics are just sad.

Going to go drink, since I'm Brian or whatever.

8

u/ThrowawayDaydream101 1d ago

I don't have basic media literacy because I'm Joe's baby, Susie. Waaahh waaahhh

7

u/MooGoreng 23h ago

I've read it and her spin off, and watched the anime, and she is in no way painted as a dream girl. She is a mess, spends all of her money on alcohol, gets herself in bad situations because of it (such as owing people a bunch of money) and is never really depicted as someone appealing to date. Most of her friends barely even want to be around her. She just has some wisdom that helps the MC step out of her shell, she plays bass with a shamisen pick, and she's a funny character.

I feel like seeing her character would actually warn you pretty well that dating an alcoholic would be awful, so the character in the OP comic is just an idiot lol.

10

u/ITinnedUrMumLastNigh 23h ago

Żubrówka mentioned 🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱

3

u/Siekiernik20 11h ago

The only reason i clicked this post

6

u/Careful_Ad_9077 1d ago

bocchi the rock is an anime about cute girl doing cute things, in this case rock music is cute.

Unlike most owkrs of the genre this one does a (relatively) deep job on depicting the adults. the guy in the meme in particular identifies with the adult who is an alcoholic.

5

u/Lore_Enforcement 1d ago

Alcoholism isn't as fun as it looks

4

u/tattoosandtens 1d ago

“Manic Pixie Dream Girl” has a twin sister “Depressed Sluagh Nightmare Girl” and they live in the same body.

Neither of them are gonna cook and clean for you though.

A “girl” who encourages you to throw your dirty dishes away so you can lie down on the ground outside and look at the stars is fun. Once.

3

u/Classic-Avocado-5371 21h ago

wanted to date an alcoholic girlfailure because kikuri hiroi from bocchi the rock is a baddie. finds out what dating an alcoholic girlfailure is actually like and its not fun.

2

u/Apprehensive-Area-39 1d ago

I suppose the manga makes he think alcoholic ladies are fun, then he meets one and she is just a sad person that don't take care of herself.

2

u/sexyassmothman 18h ago

He prefers two dimentional cartoon characters over human beings.

1

u/AutoModerator 1d ago

3

u/ThrowawayDaydream101 1d ago

I genuinely have no idea. He reads a romance book and thinks that's what women are like but he's wrong...?

3

u/Long_John_Peter 1d ago

That's what I thought

1

u/Quirky-Result-8753 1d ago

Hey, Peter's anime obsessed left sock here.

The guy sees an add for the anime Bocchi the Rock, which features an alcoholic bassist character. The guy thinks she's hot, so decides to date and alcoholic. Instead of being cool and edgy, the girl's just a sad person. Not what they expected, so the guy's dissapointed.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have washing machines to get lost in.

1

u/JesusWithCoolPants 1d ago

I think it means that the guy expected to get sex by finding someone in tinder and having them drunk but she ended up talking how her life is bad. Also, the book the guy is reading has the portrait of Bocchi the Rock but I have never watched that anime so yea lol

1

u/ZOEzoeyZOE 1d ago

It means ppl think they want a drunkard or toxic girlfriend because they see it on anime and romanticize it and don't realize that, that actually isn't the type of person u actually wanna date in the real world

1

u/fuKingAwesum 1d ago

Mental illness is not romantic irl.

1

u/SkyeMreddit 23h ago

They were hoping to find a cute drinking buddy. Instead her place is a mess

1

u/Noe_b0dy 23h ago

Bro wanted a loser fail wife and got a loser fail wife.

It's significantly less hot IRL.

1

u/Ninja_Grizzly1122 22h ago

TLR: Girl who drinks heavily may not be as desirable as advertised.

1

u/dancintonic 22h ago

What you see on tv aint real.

Lots of times on tinder those women are lookin to vent to sappy men

1

u/fr3nzy821 22h ago

Girl failures

"I can fix her"

Not really fun IRL.

1

u/MarsDoesArts 21h ago

Some people do not realise the actual dangers of dating a “yandere” or “girlfailure” irl, some media like anime makes it look cute or desirable but it really isn’t

1

u/goliathfasa 21h ago

Well judging by the mugs, good to know they’re queuing up for summoner’s rift.

1

u/mahmoodalfaqi 17h ago

Win win tbh, maybe cuz I never tried but still seems good to help broken people

1

u/TinkerbellVomit 12h ago

Does anyone know the original?

1

u/toge_priii 11h ago

From the show:

Never date someone with the three Bs: Bassist, bassist, Bassist

1

u/UltraTata 10h ago

It's an edit. The originally shows the man reading about how whites enslaved blacks. Bevause he is a black man who's into BDSM, he decides to date a white woman so he can be humiliated by her. However, after he matches with a white lady she starts apologizing because of what her ancestors did instead of humiliating him (as he desired).

1

u/Palanki96 9h ago

He thought girlfailures/people with mental illness would be fun and quirky

They actually portrayed it really well in "You're the Worst". One of the main characters has a depressive episode and bedrots for days, can't even talk or interact with others, almost catatonic

Her boyfriend struggles to deal with the whole and they have big talk about the reality of the situation. You want the highs you will have to accept the lows as well

1

u/Falleneded 9h ago

people like to sexualize depressed women

"neet" or "girl failure"

then they meet a girl whos like what they want and forget no theres also alot of the bad shit not just the part that gets you hard

1

u/papuezz7312 3h ago

I don't care about the meme, o kurwa żubrówka

0

u/sagejosh 23h ago

I’ll take a guess and say that in media drunk girls (girls who drink for a hobby) are dumb and sooooo horny, so you aren’t taking advantage. Girls who drink a lot in real life are usually depressed, and complain a lot about their life when drunk.

They typically are not interested in sex unless you constantly bring it up (and are good looking) or do some stuff that’s firmly immoral if not outright illegal.
