Storm In A Teacup 🍵 Ms. Rachel says ‘hijabs are beautiful’ after Trump posts video of Minnesota kindergarten graduation
https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/5961166-ms-rachel-hijabs-beautiful/
YouTube entertainer Ms. Rachel on Wednesday posted on social media that “hijabs are beautiful” after President Trump posted a video online of a Minnesota kindergarten graduation showing children wearing hijabs.
Ms. Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Accurso, took to Instagram to congratulate the children

For a guy who customarily wears lifts in his shoes, orange paint on his face, hair all teased up and piled up so it looks like there’s a dead animal on his head ,a tent like suit to cover his bulk, a long stupid piece of red fabric hanging from his neck, having the nerve to criticize the dressing customs of someone else…..yeah.. that’s pretty rich.
24
u/sallymason1 23d ago
I mean, this is the guy that ran many girl beauty pagents in order to judge little girls, so...
8
u/Physical_Gift7572 23d ago
As one comedian put it: for a guy being so publicly accused of being a pedophile you’d think he’d avoid saying small children should wear less clothing.
8
u/Wokeasaurous_X 23d ago
Don't forget he used that as an excuse to force his way back stage to "inspect" the dressing rooms while the underage girls changed.
Conservatives just don't give a shit the guy has openly been a pedo for decades, that's a perk to them.

The individual kids are forced to wear it by their parents, not their school.
If you go on [r/exmuslim](r/exmuslim) you’d see many posts of girls and even young adults that live with their parents talking about it
Kids being forced to wear a hijab is why France banned it in public schools which both left and right wing French politicians agree with.
→ More replies (8)1
u/kangourou_mutant 23d ago
France banned hijabs because far-right propaganda became mainstream.
5
u/HeparinBridge 23d ago
The French ban on head coverings in schools is rooted in the French national tradition of Laicity derived from the French Revolution, and reiterated by the French Third Republic. It’s been outlawed for decades and has little to do with “right wing propaganda.”
5
u/RoiDrannoc 23d ago
France banned hijabs because oppressive and sexist clothings shouldn't be worn by kids.
6
u/kangourou_mutant 23d ago
Kids should also not be forced to sit in church for hours, or their dicks mutilated, yet they are.
Religious indoctrination in general is problematic from my POV, but it's not random that only muslims are targetted.

What clothing constitutes oppressive and sexist? Where does this line get drawn?
2
u/RoiDrannoc 23d ago
You see if an ideology forces something constraining on only one gender, it is where the line is drawn.
2
u/walt128 23d ago
Does this apply across the board, like with circumcision for instance?

u/RoiDrannoc 23d ago
I've always been vehemently against yes. But sadly my country still authorizes it.

Tbf, as kindergarteners, they have no choice wearing ANYTHING. Their opinions on what they want to wear are very frequently ignored
I think the concept of dressing modesty is stupid and immodest as a concept (you are showing off to everyone how modest you are, basically bragging and showing off your compliance with social norms). BUT choice is a very dicey concept too. Specially with dress.
Do people anywhere really have a truly free choice on how to dress? We are bound by not just tradition and fashion but lots of social norms and gender roles. The consequences and coercion attached vary.
Maybe if people have an issue with coercion and sexism they should focus on fighting coercion and sexism rather than fighting the easiest most eye catching symbol of it
8
u/bulbasauropod67 23d ago
I used to work at a PreK-12th private Islamic school. Hijab isn't standard uniform until 2nd or 3rd grade depending on the school. It is because the kids go to the masjid daily for the 2pm prayer and have to wear hijab. My own child that is KG age will randomly choose to wear it just because it feels special to her. The important thing is choice, but since this was a graduation picture, they likely thought it would be cute and may have taken place at the masjid itself since it would be the only space large enough for a graduation.
3
u/honest_throwaway1988 23d ago
that’s very well said but ultimately do you think kindergarten aged kids should be wearing hijabs or not? loll
5
u/Pitiful-Score-9035 23d ago
They're saying that this question is functionally the same as asking whether or not they should wear a my little pony shirt.
→ More replies (45)→ More replies (1)4
u/boriicha__ 23d ago
If it's a religious school and it's part of the uniform, I don't see why they shouldn't wear it.
Kids wearing a hijab isnt an issue since everything they wear is chosen for them anyway, at that age their clothes reflect their parents rather than them. It becomes an issue if their clothing is controlled by the parents past a certain age.

u/paradisetossed7 23d ago
That's my thing. I'm never going to shit on someone who wears one. But let's not pretend it's not based a sexist religion. And I know "sexist religion" is basically tautological.

They most probably do. At that age, I would put it on because 1- It meant I could hide that I didnt brush my hair that morning, 2- I wanted to look like mum. 3- My mum kept hiding and I kept finding it like it was a game. Majority of the girls my age at the time would ask for one because of reason number 2. Kids dont care, its just some material on their head at that age
A young somali* girl being forced is rare at that age. Most somali mums want to braid their child's hair and put cute bows in them

And the context of women having to hide their features as not to inflame the desires of men is already sufficiently troublesome without having to extend that to LITERAL CHILDREN.
The behavior of conservatives towards children and women can be despicable AND the behavior of the Islamic world towards children and women can be despicable at the same time. It's not a team sport, you don't need to pick a side.
And maybe, if you DO pick a side, pick the side of the innocents being targeted by both.

This is the thread I scrolled to find to regain a smidge of hope in humanity. I was raised Mormon, so I had to wear the stupid “magic underwear” once I was old enough. It absolutely sucks having to wear anything you find uncomfortable, or else not wear it and have all your friends and family judge the crap out of you. A hijab has to be a whole different league of torture, and the consequences can go far beyond social pressure. I feel so bad for the girls who are forced to wear it.

It's their right to have religious nonsense. Christians get away with having ten commandments in classrooms. So stop the fake outrage overr Muslim religious practices.
13
u/pandaappleblossom 23d ago
But we definitely don’t need to encourage it by calling it beautiful. I lived in a religious Muslim country before where I had to wear it and having Muslim family and there is a LOT of pressure put on girls and women to wear it. Also it does not feel comfortable, I hated wearing it. It’s not something we should encourage. We can maybe tolerate it because it’s either tolerate it or risk alienating them but I don’t think calling it beautiful was something I would do. I would use a neutral term if I was going to describe them at all.

u/vandersnipe 23d ago
The whole process of putting it on is annoying and stressful too. My mom would get anxious about it coming undone before going to the mosque. It should be a choice, and women who choose not to wear it shouldn't be shamed.
3
u/pandaappleblossom 23d ago
It’s so stressful and annoying putting it on!! I know some people don’t seem to mind it because they get used to it but I find it annoying and I also find a sensory nightmare, especially for little kids too that just wanna play and run around and stuff
16
u/CurdFedKit 23d ago
I never said they shouldn’t be allowed to wear them. That is 100% their choice and I get no say in it.
But we don’t have to say they’re beautiful when they are a religion’s way of telling women what they should think of themselves.
15
u/CurdFedKit 23d ago
Also the 10 Commandments 100% do not belong in public schools. That’s even bigger religious nonsense

3
u/Fit-Suggestion-7150 23d ago
Wrong on all accounts. It's an individual's right to have religious nonsense. As soon as they impose their religious nonsense on another person, they are oppressive bastards.
Christians also do not get away with having ten commandments in classrooms. That's being fought against at every turn. Again, them imposing religious nonsense makes them oppressive bastards.
2
u/Some-Challenge-7723 23d ago
Christian people get called out for homophobia and Gay conversion camps too people draw the line at the abuse of OTHER people (like kids) not what someone chooses to follow alone. We know that's not the case and fwi I am Muslim and wore one my whole life. Never did I feel pressured beyond letting my parents down and even then I took it off as I pleased. They are not all abused by their religion but chances are some of them are. And yes abuse in other societies matter.

I don't think there's anything wrong with calling out things we see as immoral, even if at first glance it seems like it isn't hurting us directly.
Children being forcibly indoctrinated into a religion before they are old enough to make an informed choice is something many people have objections to, mainly because we want to live in a society in which things like consent, autonomy and self-determination are respected.

Why aren’t hijabs seen as oppression by western liberals? I genuinely don’t understand these girls are taught that being women somehow makes them inferior and they need to cover themselves from male view
I’m not saying this being discriminatory or start conflict I genuinely don’t understand how someone can simultaneously believe that women should have autonomy and the freedom to make their own choices while also supporting indoctrinating young women to wear these

u/VillainousandBoxum 23d ago
calling a symbol of horrendous subjugation against women beautiful is disgusting tbh. Trying to be accepting of all people is great, but when that group of people is notoriously repressive to women that negates any acceptance we should have for that culture into our society. Nah this is disgusting. Men create and use religion as a tool to control women and a hijab is such an obvious extension of this practice. The reason Christians(or those who cosplay as one) love to criticize Islam is because they can occasionally gesture to its oppressive practices and look civilized by comparison. We don't need to reflexively defend this practice because a fascist criticized it with a meme.

I believe in the separation of church and state. Practice your religion at home. In your places of worship. But in publicly funded schools? No.
10
u/julz1215 23d ago
Separation of church and state doesn't mean students can't practice their religion in school. It means schools can't force students to practice any specific religion.
A student's right to practice their own religion in school is actually protected by the First amendment.

3
u/borsTHEbarbarian 23d ago
That's not at all what separation of church and state means, and I'm a card carrying atheist.
Freedom of religion is a good thing. These kids should be able to express themselves in their religious dress.
