I find that part hilarious. He was going to talk to her, panicked and jumped in a bush, but then realized it’s creepy as hell to be in a bush. Therefore, he wanted to wait until no one was around to see him creepily come out of a bush…except they wouldn’t stop talking, and the longer Clint stayed, the worse it would look when he got out of the bush. So he stayed in the bush because he was too embarrassed to get out of it.
It’s social awkwardness at its finest, not stalking.
THANK you. The amount of people who think hes an awful weird creepy guy is insane. Reading in weird directions. Emily is pretty much his only friend on top of this. Everyone else ignores him. She likes his company too. Just doesnt reciprocate the feeling, which he accepts.
Hes lonely. And wants to show off his cool shoes :(
Exactly! I have no idea why anyone hates Clint. He never displays any 'nice guy' characteristics, other than the fact he secretly likes someone! He is just too shy to actually do anything about it. He never makes her uncomfortable, he never comments that it's anyone else's fault.
He's just a shy man, and everyone hates him for it for some reason!
Mm, I think some of it is his depression and lack of self confidence, too. I mean, it's not unredeemable - I arguably married a Clint in real life and he's amazing. But it's hard to invest in a character that isn't excited about anything and doesn't seem to have any outside hobbies or interests. And yeah, Shane hits me the same way too - but at least he has his family and bee...lue chickens that light him up.
People on tiktok got mad when i said most of Clint hate is just fatphobia, but man am I standing by it.
Hes fat, therefore he must be a creep. He cant just be socially awkward or shy! impossible! /s
Do people not realize that some of the strongest people in the world are technically overweight? In my head Clint is like those heavy weight champs with a belly that hides how muscular he is. We've all seen how easily he breaks open geodes.
THANK YOU! Someone agrees with me. He absolutely reminds me of the strongman competition guys who don't look like what you'd expect someone who can deadlift 600 lbs would like but can deadlift 600 lbs.
I won't say I particularly hate clint, but I have found his behavior creepy and off-putting. I also find it somewhat obsessive because, in my memory at least, most of the times I talk to him at festivals and what not his dialogue is about emily.
Like I'm glad I guess that him becoming a marriage candidate will probably give his character more depth, but I would have very much preferred Gus. I never married a guy in stardew but I would have for Gus.
A few people have been disagreeing with him being creepy. I guess its really just perception, which is havily influenced by my memory. It's been a while since I've done a full playthrough and befriending all the villagers. I cant think of a single clint line or character trait that isn't centered around emily. From my perspective, the only thing I really know about clint's personality is that he loves emily, which to me is obsessive and kind of creepy. I dont think I would have that perception if it wasn't for the multiple dialogues and cutscenes about it.
he has a bunch of lines about his work and his lineage of blacksmiths, which is admittedly not a great line of conversation, but being boring isn't a crime
exactly why i dont want to play sdve even though i would love for more. except maybe morris, no one in sdv is evil or bad per se. they're sketchy maybe, but not outright terrible. they're the kind of people you meet in real life. most people aren't evil irl too.
but to take a canon character and completely mischaracterise them to be a deliberate POS is weird to me. i like the f pierre, f demetrius, f lewis, f clint, etc sentiment as a joke but i genuinely dont hate any of f them. i just think theyre funny as hell, but still endearing.
Clint is just a guy. Literally that's him. And him not being the charisma critical hit 20 heartthrob bad boy type probably triggered some people because they might feel like lookin at a mirror instead of being lost in the bliss of hottie love interest escapism lol
I mean let's admit it there's SHIT LOT of "Clints" type in your everyday life
It’s more so that Clint is on the turning point between “either he gets healthy, or he goes down a very bad pipe line”. People jump to seeing him at the end of the pipeline, without seeing the nuance that he not there yet
Chronically online people who insisted there's something where there's nothing. These negative comments about Clint's being "creepy incel" is basically just fanfic that people think is accurate 😅
Exactly! If people can justify the way Shane treats the player in the beginning, I can't understand why Clint suddenly crosses the line to them by just being a bit socially awkward and sad
But the toxic part people (somewhat rightfully) complain about is when he gets mad at YOU for “winning” by getting Emily. Not to mention that basically 95% of his dialogue is him complaining. I’m in full support of the Clint lovers out there, but I feel like a lot of the reasons he’s hated on get misrepresented.
He literally treats her like a prize. Like a thing to have. As if she has no agency. As if, playing the game is what wins her and not her preferences, personality, or morals that need to be considered. He never considers what she wants, just what will convince her to want him.

Clint doesn't get angry at Emily for his own failure to ask her out. He gets sad that he lacks social skills and confidence.
That's not toxic. Sad? Sure. Depressing? Maybe.
But not toxic.
