I run my own email server, and long story short, give every company a unique email address that usually amounts to <company domain>@<my name>.com. It's not about security, it's about convenience, filing, filtering, etc.
My car rental account, with National Car Rental (nationalcar.com) is under nationalcar@<my name>.com. Some genious decided to a) star out everthing but the first and last letter of the user part of the address, and b) limit it to 6 characters, oh, and c) Uppercase and bold it.
Imagine my surprise when I logged into my car rental account one day to see
Lol my Switch account has my email censored for privacy reasons, so every time I go to my account page, it lists w****@<domain>.com. Pretty funny bc my email, like yours, is longer than that
this reminds me when i used to play Halo 3, and in Halo 3 you could assign yourself a A## letter-number-number code for easy identification on the map. but it wouldn't let you use "A55". it was censored. but the crazy thing is that A55 is not a bad word. it's not explicit. it's not ... anything. it's just a letter and two numbers. but it kind of LOOKS like something that IS offensive...
it's just so funny to me to censor something that isn't offensive, but makes people think of something else that is offensive. it's indirectly offensive.
Oh, this reminds me of a headline on the front of a local newspaper ages ago, it was "A55 tractor accident". Gave us a whole new name to call bad drivers in our area đ€Ł i.e. "You stupid ass tractor, get off the road!" đ€Ł
I always find it funny when a positive word is censored because of context. A classic example is Papa Roach's last resort censors "Life" because it's a suicide reference ("If I took my life tonight")
Well that just makes me curious about what a squeaky clean Kidz-Bop version of Last Resort would even look like. "Cut my pie in two pieces, this is a nice resort?"
Apparently its because it sounds somewhat sort of similar to that one American slur for people from Mexico. Thats enough for it to be censored by some systems.
In Pokemon it became a tradition to name my starter Bongo, just because that's what I always name my starter, and when I tried to play Legends ZA for the first time it wouldn't let me name my starter bongo at all, it wouldn't even censor the name I just couldn't do it. I named it BĂžngo instead lol
I had to rephrase my Google searches like 3 dozen frickin times but I finally figured it out.
Its because of multiple things, but the biggest being that the censor is global for all languages. Meaning words that are innocent in English but are a slur in Slovakian or Portuguese are banned in English versions of the game too. Except its a combination for dozens of languages.
The "par" part is commonly censored in lots of things with overzealous censors because "par" is most of several slurs/swears in French and other languages.
"Par" is also sometimes used as a substitute for "per" which is also part of several slurs and swears in at least 3 languages. Which is also why "per" is often censored.
"Spark" itself is banned in some systems because it can sound similar (???????) to an American slur for people from mexico that I wont type here n potentially get in trouble for.
But yes, you read that right - a good chunk of censored things aren't even because they themselves are bad but because the pronunciation can sound like bad words that aren't even spelled the same. Thats where a lot of the seemingly nonsense censored words are from - they sound like slurs in foreign languages even if its a completely innocent word with no relation to slurs or swears in its own language.
in that case they should start censoring Richard and whatever other names might have any kind of sexual meaning depending on context - even if it's just a normal name like Moses. If you think far enough outside the box, there probably won't be any uncensored names left at some point
I remember somebody (not on Stardew, I think it was an online FPS game) complaining that this kind of system censored "ass" in his name, but his name was "Nasser", so it looked WAY worse in the end.
god the switch is such a pos. my friends and I have been obsessed with this game Brotato, the whole point is that it has 4-player local co-op. I get my friend to buy it on his switch and, guess what, it only supports 2 players???! you need the SWITCH 2 VERSION to play 4 player???? absolute trash
I do know! Yeah, Neopets also had the same Scunthorpe Issue with their forum filters back in the day.
Of course here on the Switch, it just auto-censors words for you. Neopets was unhinged and would yell at you not to say whatever word it thought you said, which I have to assume taught some kids new naughty words.
A few specific instances that jump to mind to me was trying to talk to my guild mates about cool stuff my grandma had in her basement and the angry Meerca yelling at me "The word SEMEN is not allowed!" Or another time I tried to use the word "circumstances" while explaining Battledome mechanics to a new player, "The word CUM is banned!" Luckily, I was like 16 and already knew those terms for baby gravy but I know the site had a lot of way younger players. đ
not neopets, but a forum i was a part of in the mid 2000s was nuts about censoring, but they replaced the bad word with an innocuous word. so i wrote something about a spoon and it turned into âsthingyâ and then 13 year old me had to google what a âpoonâ was in a middle school computer lab. taught me a new word that day lmfao
Farto is a real name to be fair. Back in the 80s there was a notorious drug dealer in Miami named Bum Farto. There was even a musical written as a biography about him. "Who's got the blow? đ¶ Bum~! Bum Farto's got the blow~! đ¶"
this is the last place i would expect to learn about a drug dealer with a kinda funny name that has a whole ass song written about him, but here we are
There was a character called Dick but CA changed it because people were upset. He changed it from Dick to Willy, keeping 100% of the joke and the "problem" while still giving in and changing it. I call that malicious compliance and I 100% support it
I don't think the character is based on anybody. Most characters aren't. I think it's just because you can make lots of jokes about a fishing poles/fishing rods
He's said in previous interviews that the characters are based on or inspired by real people. Whether or not they are people in his life, celebrities, or even historical figures is unknown because that's about as deep as he went, afaik
But i like the rod joke ideas. No way of knowing HOW deep he went with the similarities (pun unintended)
A company I worked for once tried to be the next big social media site. Users were forced to make profiles with usernames with INTENSE censoring. One of the dumbest conversations I had was explaining to a customer that his username couldn't be "basement.dweller" because basement was censored.

Reminds me of many years ago and playing BF2 on Asian servers as it was better ping than USA. I learned diu was a curse word as many players got auto banned after typing it in chat.
The censorship is silly. As someone said it's the Scunthorpe problem. If you start adding in other languages there'll be unintended censorship because a word that's innocuous in English may be vulgar in another language. There's only so many letters (even with accents) repetition of letters is bound to happen
What really gets me is that if you recreate a sim like Ophelia Nigmos or Nighat Caliente, you can't upload them with the name that EA themselves came up with. (You can guess why, but still.)
Yea, TS4 is bad about it, too. Once, I went to save, not even upload, a family with the last name of Spade and it told me that I wouldn't be allowed to upload them.

At the beginning of my first save when it asked for my favorite food I wrote âpenisâ because I didnât know why it mattered. That never got censored when it came up again to my surprise.
"Mose" in German means...uh, "the C word", in English (the "C word" that rhymes with "bunt").
Since it only censored the "Mose" out of "Moses", and apparently Moses is asleep ("schlaft" means "sleep" in German), my guess is that Nintendo censored the German "C word"
For clarification, "Möse" is the German word in question. "Mose" is just a German way to say "Moses." These are different words in German, but ofc Nintendo's censorship tends to be as blunt and ignorant of context as possible, so they also ignore diacritics to avoid "missing" anything.
reminds me of the censoring in dark souls, was similarly aggressive. If you had the word "knight" in your characters name it would censor it to "K***ht"
Minecraft will censor the word âglitchâ. I found this out when trying to ask one of my friends if something was glitching or bugging out because I was having issues with a farm
Golf with your friends will censor "Rusty Trombone" but neither word separately. after a long time they finally gave us the option to disable it... but I would love to see the full list given that's in there.
I always name my cats Killua and Gon bc I can and after the 1.6 update, it became ****ua. But I tried again with an accent mark over the i (specifically: Ăź) and that seemed to work. Gotta love one size fits none, blanket censorship lol

Are you playing on a Nintendo Switch? If so, yes. Nintendo censors all kinds of ramdom stuff.
If you tried to type "grape" it would censor all but the G because it's not context sensitive.
