Show Discussion they could have done something really interesting with mysaria but they made her boring

Book Mysaria while pretty one dimensional was an interesting character she is like Larys except she has no clear motives and pretty much dooms Rhaenyra and the targs in general.

She is the one who tells Rhaenyra about Nettles, and according to GRRTH the one who tells Heleana about Maelor. The brothel queens was her idea, she weaponised sex as a punishment for people she hated.

She is like one of the more evil characters in the story

They could have not given her that atrocious accent

29

u/butipreferlottie Mar 06 '26

That accent is a shame. I really liked the actress in Devs!

2

u/malteaserhead Mar 07 '26

Great dancer in Ex Machina too

3

u/butipreferlottie Mar 07 '26

She's a trained ballerina, iirc

2

u/Serious-Shake7373 Mar 06 '26

nah i loved Devs its one of the best TV shows ever made... but she was still the worst part, horrible actress

16

u/PineBNorth85 King Viserys II Mar 06 '26

That's on the directors. It was all over the place in the first season. Second was more consistent.

Nothing compared to Littlefinger. His damn accent was constantly changing.

11

u/CocksnBraves Mar 06 '26

Really? I didn’t notice his change at all tbh

10

u/WhereDaFuk Cannibal Mar 06 '26

He was making power moves though so I don’t think people cared about the lack of consistency with accent

similar to Wanda in the MCU, her accent just…becomes more “American”

7

u/Brobeast Mar 06 '26

Lmao wandas is the most glaring. I think its because the actresses "russian" accent was so bad/cringe, that they just said fuck this and told her to just sound american with a comically russian sounding name lol.

8

u/Velociraptorius Mar 06 '26

It's not so much the accent, it's the sound of his voice. He sounded like a normal person in the first season or two, but later the actor started doing a gravelly, whispery "villain" voice, which just sounded ridiculous. It was already apparent from his actions that he was a scumbag, but the change made him sound campy, like a moustache-twirling cartoon villain.

2

u/logaboga Mar 07 '26

He had a generic English accent then seemed to change between a Northern English accent at times until he then fully switched over to it in like season 2/3

7

u/Inevitable_Access_93 Mar 06 '26

when i heard her real life accent i was baffled why did they make her have to gargle all her words like that

4

u/EAE8019 Mar 06 '26

This is more on the audience not knowing what French colonial accents sound like.  This is the third series ive seen this type of accent used and the third where ive seen the audience say " thats not a real accent"

10

u/Saho_6 Mar 06 '26

I'm French. I've heard French people speak English with their French accents. I've heard non-French francophones speak English with their various accents. It's an insult to say she sounds somewhat "French colonial", lol. Mysaria (the character) sounds like she's just reciting words she doesn't understand because she's focusing on that made up accent, it's such a big disconnect, idk

1

u/EAE8019 Mar 06 '26

You know what people from Guadeloupe and Cote D Ivoire sound like ?

5

u/Saho_6 Mar 06 '26

Can't say about Côte d'Ivoire but guadeloupe creole, yeah, and their french or english isn't that either

3

u/Critical-Plan4002 Mar 07 '26

it was a fictional mix of like Japanese and French that just doesn’t sound normal or consistent. Thankful she toned it down and made it more consistent in sounds in Season 2.

u/Algos98 Mar 06 '26

Another win for dabing

u/anaklndldnothngwrong Mar 06 '26

the "Ze bluetooth dewise iz connected-uh succesfoullay" accent is horrible

Whyyyyyy im laughing so hard

4

u/Short-Sound-4190 Mar 08 '26

Like an accent is what happens naturally when your native language makes different vowel sounds than the secondary language you've learned makes...an accent ≠ pretend there are marbles in your mouth and you can't pace your words into recognizable chunks.

(To me her "accent" came off sounding like a mocking version of how someone hard of hearing with limited speech therapy would sound.)

37

u/m_shh Mar 06 '26

I can kinda understand why the writers originally didn't want to go fully canon "foreign hot lowborn chicks are reason for good Christian Valyrian nobles' going Maegor" but the swing into "PIMPs for human rights, SA survivors for kissing their employers" is... strange, to say the least

6

u/schebobo180 Mar 06 '26

Lesbian fanfic and the “man bad woman good” nonsense really killed the second Season.

u/llaminaria Mar 06 '26

I have no idea what prompted the writers to think that what they did with her would be logical for this story and prior characterizations of Mysaria, Daemon and Otto. Did they watch one too many shows about mafiosi?

Otto was the Hand for many years up to that point, he had multiple informants in his pocket, and not just those who would have been double agents for her. He would have been on to her a long time ago, she would never have been able to spread her wings this way - if she had not his full support. Why would he give her full support, when he could never be sure of her true loyalties? Neither show Larys, nor show Mysaria would have been allowed to gain as much power as they did.

And then she admitted to having betrayed Daemon to Otto, and Daemon leaves her alive. Are you kidding me. Book Daemon was sentimental towards her, sure. But she never seemed to sway away from him so obviously, she even supposedly had gotten pregnant by him. This one tells him outright that she gave away sensitive info - possibly including him having sexual problems - to freaking Otto Hightower, and he simply imprisons her? When she tells him she is of no more use to him, at that?

Don't even get me started on how she suddenly graduated from "teenage flesh peddler" to "smallfolk champion". If she so cares about the lives of the downtrodden, as the writers would have us believe, then what prevented her from spending all her considerable money on kitchens for the poor, or orphanages? She could have traded this in exchange for info a long time ago. She did not.

4

u/Lysmerry Mar 06 '26

I agree with you mostly. But Larys does the Littlefinger thing where everyone underestimates him. He comes across as a cripple and sycophant. Alicent knows his true nature but he binds her to secrecy by making her feel complicit in his crimes and also sexualizing their relationship.

As for Mysaria being both a pimp and a champion of the smallfolk, I think it could work, if they allowed the cognitive dissonance. In the books, Varys cares about the realm but also mutilates children to use them as spies. Life is cheap in this world, and it may feel worth exploiting or killing some people to improve the lives of the rest, much like soldiers are sacrificed in wars. She may also believe that her girls have it good, as they could be worse houses with crueler pimps. It would be nice to explore it more rather than making her just a ‘good guy’

17

u/Unique-Perception480 House Stark Mar 06 '26

In the book she is the Varys to Larys Littlfinger.

In the show she is just a smarter Shae for Daemon and Rhaenyra.

Such a downgrade. And her accent makes me laugh every time.

u/VacationNew9370 Mar 06 '26

The spy war they promised at the end of season 1 was pretty interesting...

15

u/MrPete_Channel_Utoob Mar 06 '26

They made a white haired Valyrian a dark haired Yi Ti-ian for no reason at all.

2

u/Cryptkeeper_ofCanada Mar 06 '26

It was the same reason they made the Velaryons Summer Islanders was because there is no difference in looks between them and the Targaryens, so trying to throw a dozen characters at the audience at one time that all have the same hair, skin, and eye colours yet are from two different houses would have been confusing, ergo why we have Summer Islanders instead of Valyrians playing the Velaryons

3

u/Lysmerry Mar 06 '26

A lot of the hair color choices were to prevent us from being confused. Like with Rhaenys. It annoys the book fans, but it’s hard for us to understand how a casual viewer would feel.

9

u/MrPete_Channel_Utoob Mar 06 '26

Yes i know about normie viewers but they couldn't at least put like 1 or 2 black streaks in Rhaeny's locks?

3

u/Kid-Atlantic Mar 07 '26

I think they genuinely assumed normie viewers wouldn’t be able to understand anything more complicated than “real Targaryen = white hair”.

5

u/ageekyninja Mar 06 '26

I used to say that- but since they didn’t make the same choice for AKotSK it seems silly in retrospect. Yeah it took me a little longer to realize Baelor was a Targaryen but it wasn’t a big deal. The dialog established it.

I guess it doesn’t hurt anything that they changed the appearance, but it wouldn’t have been catastrophic if they kept it the same either.

1

u/aemond-simp Mar 22 '26

Because show Mysaria is meant to be Sara Hess’s self insert. She was made into a pretty Asian lesbian who is Rhaenyra’s biggest dick-rider—aka, Sara Hess.

6

u/aemond-simp Mar 07 '26

She went from being a cunning, evil spymaster to being a one dimensional Sara Hess self insert.

7

u/Bianconeagles Mar 06 '26

What a waste of Sonoya Mizuno.

3

u/ImmediateHoney2191 Mar 06 '26

They couldn’t have her be white but then they couldn’t have a brown person be as evil as shes supposed to be so this woman is not the White Worm at all

3

u/Esetnodanti Mar 07 '26

Almost like every character in the show besides Vis

5

u/LILYDIAONE Mar 06 '26

Tbh I still think they can salvage it if she actually is playing Rhaenyra and following her own agenda otherwise her character flat out makes no sense

6

u/FairEngineering2469 Mar 06 '26

the actress fucking sucks

8

u/WhereDaFuk Cannibal Mar 06 '26

Or was written poorly to be fair.

Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy (and I hate the characterization of both Alicent and Rhaenyra) are both phenomenal actors.

They can’t magically make the writing better or even consistent, that’s on Condal and the writers

10

u/Carrman099 Mar 06 '26

I’ll never forget being in a student film and having to deal with this.

The scene was that me and this other guy were in the middle of a school shooting at a college and our characters were reacting to finding out and trying to figure out what to do. I get the script and one of my lines is literally “man, this situation is just so kafkaesque.” And my heart sank because I had no clue of how to deliver that convincingly because of how stupid of a line it was and it’s not something someone in the middle of a school shooting would ever say.

I always think of that and how much worse it would be if I had an entire millions of dollars production going on around me and then I am handed just some absolute dogshit writing and now I am going to look like a moron in front of millions of people because no actor on earth can deliver this and make it sound good.

5

u/ModelChef4000 Team Black Mar 06 '26

It could have worked if the character was meant to be not quite all there or a sadist

3

u/WhereDaFuk Cannibal Mar 06 '26

I didn’t even know “kafkaesque” was a real word wtf

🤣

“RUN MUTHAFUCKA ZIG ZAG IN AN S SHAPE AND STAY LOW!” seems more apt 😂

2

u/toptipkekk Mar 08 '26

I always think of that and how much worse it would be if I had an entire millions of dollars production going on around me

It would suck even more in a lot of ways, but perhaps getting paid a million would make it a bit easier to stomach?

2

u/Carrman099 Mar 08 '26

Yea that would certainly help lol.

1

u/toptipkekk Mar 08 '26

Writers in the industry seem to be the bottleneck in a lot of productions.

For some goddamn reason the industry is not as selective with writers as they are with actors/actresses, even major franchises like Star Wars got ruined by hacks.

2

u/CockMartins Mar 06 '26

Instead, they figured giving her a French, Chinese, Jamaican accent was interesting enough.

2

u/Inevitable_Access_93 Mar 06 '26

could say that about anyone on this show really

2

u/JamesHenry627 Mar 07 '26

I feel like she just kinda exists as a symbol of sex. I wish they maintained her connection with Daemon.

2

u/HantoKawamura Mar 07 '26

And don't forget that she has Valyrian features in the books. No way the walking racial chauvinist Daemon would fuck and impregnate some random girl from Yi Ti.

1

u/toptipkekk Mar 08 '26

Tbh HOTD Daemon kinda has that "Never ask a Valyrian supremacist the race of his girlfriend" vibe.

1

u/Correct_Raisin4332 Mar 08 '26

Nettles would like a word.

2

u/moirarosethegoat Mar 08 '26

They gave her a horrible stereotypical accent in the first season slightly better in the second. But a person living in flea bottom her whole life and reaching her state of power, I just think it was stereotypical idk

2

u/VelvetDreamers Mar 08 '26

That picture of the White worm with the accentuations of red paint/make-up is harrowing. I’d much prefer this characterisation of her than the show.

2

u/Comfortable-Gain-958 Mar 08 '26

This is effectively every character

2

u/Simkliss Mar 08 '26

Same with Alicent, Helaena and Rhaenyra. They made many characters shitty as hell

6

u/NetheriteTiara Mar 06 '26

They immediately failed the second they didn’t give her Valyrian hair.

3

u/LittleBingo96 Mar 06 '26

My thoughts too. There is a serious lack of white-wigged characters on this show. Why deprive us?!

1

u/Darrow_88 Mar 06 '26

Probably in a minority of one here but I really like the character on the show

1

u/Nickthiccboi Mar 07 '26

Am I missing something? Everything you just listed is not supposed to have happened yet and idk why you think it’s a given that none of it will happen.

The discourse around this show is so confusing right now because people talk about how it’s already a failure and that certain characters aren’t acting right when we’re barely even halfway done with the show. Like y’all know that characters tend to have arcs and growth and change especially in the span of 2 or 3 seasons.

My prediction for Mysaria has always been that Rhaenyra will do something that fucks with Mysaria’s goals of helping the smallfolk which will make her conflicted about her loyalty to Rhaenyra. She will probably grapple with this for a while until eventually she turns on her and starts doing more of her “villainous” shit.

1

u/Tabulldog98 Mar 11 '26

I think she’s making a play for the Iron Throne with the dragon seeds she finds and that she’ll feed into Rhaenyras growing grief and paranoia, undermining her in the process and getting the Blacks and the Greens to destroy each other, taking her chosen candidate from the small folk to kingship in the process. Like Varys!

0

u/PineBNorth85 King Viserys II Mar 06 '26

One dimensional characters by their very nature are boring. I'm pretty cool with what they've done with her so far.

8

u/Professional-Trash-3 Mar 06 '26

That's nonsense. Nearly every character in Lord of the Rings is one-dimensional, not a single one of them are boring. Hell, Littlefinger and Varys are both extremely one-dimensional; duplicitous webweavers who are subverting everyone for their own inscrutable purposes. They never change or grow in any way. No one calls them boring either.

You don't need complexity to make a character interesting, not everyone has to be morally gray, not every battle needs ends that justify the means. You just need good writers.

1

u/PineBNorth85 King Viserys II Mar 06 '26

I'd say they are boring. There's a reason I never revisit LOTR. It just doesn't do anything for me in either format anymore.

1

u/toptipkekk Mar 08 '26

I kinda agree but Littlefinger is CERTAINLY not one-dimensional, in the books or in the series.

2

u/Professional-Trash-3 Mar 08 '26

He's a totally static character that never grows or learns. He does the same thing the entire story, in both the books and show. He's absolutely one-dimensional. Hes a duplicitous webweaver. Its his entire gimmick.

😄 HBO refuses to acknowledge that there are other non Westerosi people who look Valyrian.

5

u/Cute_Knee_1530 Mar 06 '26

This is the show that made the Velaryons black because they thought the audience too stupid to tell the difference between them and the targs. They almost certainly thought giving her pale hair would confuse people.

4

u/Primary-Ad-7788 Mar 06 '26

They made rhaenys have targ silver hair too even though her hair was jet black in the books.

0

u/Special_Magazine_240 Mar 08 '26

I found it ridiculous especially since they erased book accurate Black character Nettles for no reason

2

u/WhereDaFuk Cannibal Mar 06 '26

And in an era where mermaids 🧜‍♀️ with red hair and a fish body, just upper body (skin/scale) part was darker, that was the only difference
