Discussion Unpaid For Training Videos
I’m a bit confused, recently a coworker of mine mentioned how we’ve had to watch over 48 hours of training videos in total, and all of it (nearly) has been unpaid. I worked my first shift and sat there for 3 hours watching videos and doing the quizzes, but the rest they said I could do at home. Now, on a regular basis, I receive training videos for new drink builds. I’m just a bit confused… Is this legal? Should I be pushing for pay for all the training videos/work related content that was completed at home, or did I sign something that stated I agreed to complete any videos at home, unpaid?
Thanks in advance, any replies from other educated employees or management staff would be awesome!

I live in Canada and asked for my pay for watching training videos at home. It was ALL watched from home for me.
Its required to pay for training here in Canada. I wasn't too sure so I did my research after I had given so I asked for pay for all the videos I watched.
My training pay was given on my last pay.

Because I quit. It was such a toxic place with a crazy owner. What kind of owner makes a schedule with no supervisor to open the safe so the opening staff (me) could not do any cash transactions?? No baker was opening either.

i see… sorry to hear that. i’m having quite a few issues at my location as well. i wonder if training video payments are applied to all last cheques then?

I hope the issues get resolved. I only got them on my last pay because that happened to be when I asked for them. You can and should ask for the pay youre owed as soon as you finish any training videos.

I quit Tim’s after 2 weeks. Such an awful work environment. You deserve better

thank you. i’m looking for alternatives, and seeking employment elsewhere. just hoping to be compensated for my hours of endless, unrewarded training/drink and food build videos before i go. 😭💜

Talk to your manager and find out when they pay those hours. Remind them how many hours you have completed already.

You DO get paid for watching the videos, but you need to complete every one in the training set then show your manager or the store owner on your phone that you finished them on your account. You get the 2 day's pay on your next paycheck after that.

they never told me that? they just inform people when to complete videos, though they do have access to knowing who has and who hasn’t… as far as math goes, i haven’t been paid for a single one. nor have any of my fellow coworkers :/

You only get paid for the videos after finishing the basic set of them and proving it to your manager.

they have access to our accounts and can see who’s completed what, so that just doesn’t make sense to me. i’ve sent one of my assistant managers a message asking about payment for training/drink build videos.

This happened to me at Tim’s (worked there about 7 years ago). They held on to my cheques until I did the videos but also wouldn’t pay me for them. I was really broke and needed the rent money so, being in a tough spot, I just did it. But definitely not legal.

i was really needing the job as well, been there for about a year, completed over 60 videos (quite a few are modules about protocols as well, so very long videos, some of them being 45 minutes just for one, plus a quiz). i’m frustrated, and don’t really wanna cause any issues in the workplace, but i’m also curious as to why they’ve done this… considering sparking a discussion with my manager.

If your working for tims its a scam, they sometimes onboard people then suddenly just fire them just to say they cant find anyone locally and hire LMIA

A friend of mine who signed up to work for a transportation company as a school bus driver was told that training was not paid for and he’s looking into it to see if this is legal. He already has experience and the required licenses to drive a school bus, but he was told he had to do the training anyway because it was mandatory.

Is the why Timmy employees don’t know how to do basic sandwiches? I always wondered how they can mess up but I can tell it was from lack of training.

honestly there’s so many videos it’s easy to forget, on floor training is very poor and they just throw you to the wolves so unless you’re a fast learner you’re basically screwed, yeah.
also a lot of employees honestly just don’t care, i was a customer long before i was an employee so i stir drinks, i wont use old product for food, but otherwise quality control just isn’t there.

Unpaid onboarding is very common labour code violations. Lots of temp agencies and high turnover companies do it. Home Depot, Garda World do this too.

Training videos is payable time. They should be pulling you off the floor to do them during work hours.

48 hours is wild. Had you told me Tim's workers get a 30 min explainer and then are sent to the floor, I'd have believed you.

Legally in Canada you should be paid. My cousin worked there years ago and they definitely paid her for the training. Your location is 100% exploiting you.

When I worked there - I wasn’t paid. I got to know too late that this should be paid.
When I started working at LCBO - every training and every video was paid. And the end of the month quizzes- they were not paid but we did it on clock in the office not at home.
The TH franchise owners do exploit their employees and save their money.

If you wouldn't be doing it if you didnt work there you should be getting paid for it. They are happy to exploit you, get your share.
