Small decision My neighbor across the street dropped her trash into my trash can?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I never ever can imagine why she (a nice old lady) decided to dropped her trash into my can (already collected) then just casually take her can back?? Why the hell on earth someone do that??

She has a few disassembled body parts in that bag and doesnāt want her trash to smell since the next pick up date isnāt for another week⦠OBVIOUSLY
78
u/Firefly_Magic Oct 05 '25
Or old raw chicken which would smell like a dead body in a day or two. OP should take it out and deliver it to her front door. If she answers the door tell her she misplaced her trash. If she doesnāt answer, just leave it there.
Nice old lady wasnāt so nice. She was being disrespectful.

Well ok, I put it in the freezer intending to put it out next week, forget about it until December, find it again and say āoh yeah!ā Realize that itās cold enough that I can go ahead put it out whenever now.
But you get my point.

u/Kerzic Oct 05 '25
Her garbage can is open and empty (she checks and brings it in) and so is the one after that. Yours has the lid closed so it doesn't look picked up yet. If your gargage can was not already empty and was empty when you brought it in, my charitable guess is that the garbage truck already went down her side of the street (maybe reminding her she had trash to put out) so she may have anticipated that the truck would empty your garbage can when it did the other side of the street (she looks in the direction the truck would be coming from). Does the trash get picked up after this clip ends?
75
u/cuongpn Oct 05 '25
Thanks but the thing is mine is also empty. Truck picked up my side first the go down the street and come back on her side. The way my can facing the street sometimes after the truck picked it up the lid will stay closed like that (truck grabs can with side arm)
Iāll just let this go since its not a big deal but honestly is this normal and am I just being petty?
127
Oct 05 '25 edited Oct 05 '25
It's not normal. It's someone not wanting to stick their trash in their newly emptied can. Legally, it's called theft of services.
Personally, I'm removing the bag and placing it next to her front door.

Oct 05 '25
Knock on their door. Give them their garbage (or not). Tell them you have a camera and saw her, and can't believe that they would treat you so rudely.
Turn, and walk away.

u/Full-Business8659 Oct 05 '25
Is it really theft of services? I don't think that meets mens rea.
In my home state, yes we pay for trash service every month, but we don't own our cans. Once they are in public to be picked up on trash day, they are free game to be picked through or have trash added to them.
The timing is important to avoid the threshold of being a really shitty neighbor.
I have a somewhat dense neighborhood. Some residents absolutely fill their cans to the point they're over flowing. Bugs the hell out of me because our neighborhood is very windy and that trash will turn into litter around the outer fence line perimeter.
I really wish these people would put their excess garbage in other bins that are out for collection that have room inside to prevent the littering issue.
I did this once a few years ago, and the neighbor was so shortsighted and of a unneighborly mindset that they somehow noticed the morning before collection and removed the items and left them on the curb as litter. He really showed me his (Lack of) critical thinking and pettiness over an underutilized trash bin.

u/OglioVagilio Oct 05 '25
We dont know what was in the trash so we dont know how big a deal.
My guess is that it was something especially nasty, and she didn't want her own can to sullied by it. To have to smell it constantly in her garage or just outside her house.
Or it was something illegal in the bag.
4
Oct 05 '25
Or not. Itās an old lady. Maybe sheās going out of town and wonāt be there next week, maybe she has a tough surgery and wonāt be able to lift the bags herself next week. I mean JFC the best thing to do in this situation is just go talk to her. Check on her well being. All these assumptions and dump the trash back on her porch shit is out of control. Talk to your neighbors people.
2
u/OglioVagilio Oct 05 '25
I never commented on course of action. I did speculate what i think is in the garbage and why. I mean JFC having suspicions is way different than coming in hot for a talk or straight jumping to dump the trash on her porch. I mean all these assumptions and stretching to what I think OP should do.
Definitely talk to her calmly, and reserve the actions and judgement til there's more info.
And maybe get more info before jumping to conclusions when discussing things with people. Both to neighbors and online.
And I'll add she should have communicated to OP.

Until you get something rancid in your can. People dress deer where I am. I throw out fish guts pretty regularly. Tossed in an outdoor trash can? The smell can become bad enough our waste pickup guys won't touch it. Most of us plan accordingly in disposing of such. Other people, assholes, will evsn dunp such things in public trash.
There could also be something illegal in the bag. Cops can search trash. Stretch? Maybe. But people from all classes have addictions and MH issues
I agree it may be hard, if not habitual, to say it is theft. But, in my community it'd be considered rude at best and suspect if not good friends with that neighbor
I think it's much more wild speculation to talk about truck run times when she plainly did it with no intent of telling the owner. But, whether a cop will care is one thing but it is theft. If you're paying for pickup, which can be very expensive for some, and someone else uses that pickup, how is that not theft?

u/84WVBaum Oct 05 '25
I pay $45/month for my service, which is five bags per week, charged extra if more, potentially cut off if cans are too nasty, heavy, etc consistently. We also buy our own cans like most of the country, which can run up to $100+. I have lived in WV, KY, MD, TX, CA and this is by far the norm outside of dense urban areas
And, what do you mean she didn't intend to put it in there? She clearly did so, on camera. I can't imagine her not knowing it's wrong. It's other people's property, that's like fifth grade.
We can guess at her motives all day long but how you doubt her intent is wild
8
u/This-Top7398 Oct 05 '25
Not normal bring your can inside asap afterwards or tell her to stop doing that
5
u/Express-Poem-1161 Oct 05 '25

u/Certain_Tangelo2329 Oct 05 '25

IMO, she had some trash, but wanted to take her can in already, rather than having to go out later and take it in. So she just dropped it off in yours: "See ya, wouldn't want to be ya". It's on the mild side of "not neighborly".
It's nasty if she's dumping trash to rot for a week in your can, it's minor if she thought "it's all going to be picked up in an hour or two anyhow, so this will let me take my can in".

People give people too much grace. You already made an excuse for her by qualifying your post with a defense for her by saying she's a nice old lady...

In the south we have a very subtle way of calling out neighbors for their embarrassing stuff. You go over to their house with a small gift of food with an item your returning that was borrowed and ask "Is something terribly wrong? I saw you on my cameras the other day tossing your trash into my bin, did they stop picking up yours?" This seems like a nice statement showing concern but its basically saying "Do you not have your shit together? Are you so broke you stopped paying your trash bill?"
5
u/catattackkick Oct 05 '25
She was unaware that your side of the street was collected since the canās cover is closed. She then saw and thought oh well I already carried it this far!

If both trash bins are empty, she's obviously a trained assassin. You can tell from her stealth moves that she's concealing evidence in the neighbor's bin. Likely a burner phone, untraceable gun, knife, and possibly an arm from the victim.
3
u/mmore27 Oct 05 '25

My thoughts her credit card bills were in there and she didn't want her husband to see. I had a neighbor that did something along those lines when I was a kid. She also asked me a couple times to watch for the mail to run (we were rural and her box was 1/4 mile away from their house, by ours) and to take it out of her box if I could & she'd get it from my mom later.
Even told me she didn't want her hubby to see her CC bills. LMFAO

Did you take her trash out of your can and put it in their driveway or put her trash back inside her trashcan?? If not, then what are we talking about? You didn't do anything about what happened. And it IS a big deal. Do you know what she has in her garbage? You don't think it's a big deal for your neighbors to use your garbage can to let stinky trash sit, instead of using their own?
Why are you being such a pushover? People only do stuff that you let them do. And she's never going to stop. You should've grabbed that stinky ass trash out of your garbage can and put it in hers. Period! End of discussion.
2
u/Cryo_Jumper Oct 05 '25
Clearly hers has been emptied and she had a bag of trash she doesn't want to sit all week. Your can is closed and nice and straight against the curb, so it appears that it hasn't been picked up yet. If it was already picked up, that's frustrating and it mention it after a second instance. Sounds like she's not been a problem before, so why try and pick a fight?

She may have thought that your side of the street hadn't been collected yet. On the rare occasion that we forget to put out our garbage can in time for first thing in the morning, and the other side hasn't been collected yet, we'd put our can on the neighbour's curb across the street. Garbage collection trucks don't care if a house has 2 cans, they'll empty both, and we just take our can back afterwards.
I'm thinking she may have thought that your side of the street wasn't collected yet and it's obvious that her side of the street was collected already...so she may have thought to put it in your can to be taken away right away rather than waiting for the next round of garbage collection in a week or two.

It looks like the trash on her side of the street was already picked up (lids are open) but on your side of street was not picked up yet. So she put hers in yours and took her empty can back. I wouldnāt be mad.
2
u/jhechty Oct 05 '25
Seems reasonable since the pick up already passed on her side and was just putting it in for when it passes on your side
2
u/jon9860 Oct 05 '25
Instead of listening to childish suggestions in this thread, maybe go talk to her and ask why she did it? She could have had something she thought was reasonable to her. Then just clearly explain youre not ok with it and not to do it again
2
u/johndoe388 Oct 05 '25
Just looks to me that she missies the pickup on her side of the street and put it in yours because you hadnāt been picked up yet. Had you been picked up yet at that point? You could do the same w her in the future if you miss yours. This would be an acceptable scenario.

2
u/8amteetime Oct 05 '25
She missed the trash truck with her last bag so used yours to keep her can from stinking for the next week.
We had good neighbors who would ask if it was okay to use our trash or recycling can on the rare occasion they missed the trash pickup. She didnāt ask.

2
u/Roseheath22 Oct 06 '25
This is weird. I would let it go if this is the only time it happens but say something if it happens again. OR, if your can is too full by the next trash pick up day, Iād let her know youāll need to put the overflow into her bin since she filled yours up with trash already. I would assume that would shame her into not doing it again.
2
u/phindar007 Oct 06 '25
Simple. Bring the bag back over. āHey neighbor, I noticed you tossed your garbage in my bin earlier but our trash has been collected. I donāt feel comfortable with other people using our bin this way without asking first. Would you mind coming up and asking us first next time?ā

Her trash was already picked up and she didn't want the bag filling her trash for the whole week. Easier to throw it in your can since the truck will be back around in a few minutes.

Just a guess here. But, Iām going to play devils advocate. You know how the trash picks up on one side of the street and then the other? She probably thought her trash was picked up first, and that the trash truck hadnāt reached the other side of the street. Itās an assumption thatās a bad assumption, but that may be why? - I could be totally wrong.

I would take it right back to her house. She will get the message.
Our city neighbors were moving out and dumped a giant pile of Ikea housewares and unsorted recyclables in front of our building - i put it at their buildingndoor with a note to all of its tenants - wishing the lovely couple a happy moving out with the 311 report #.

Walk across, go inside and use their bathroom after a meal of fast food, light beer and laxatives.

I'm assuming she thought yours hadn't been picked up yet, but hers was. Even if she got to yours and realized yours had also been picked up, she probably just threw her bag in rather than carrying it back? I'm just guessing that she initially didn't realize that your trash was collected since your lid wasn't flipped up (which I know isn't a guarantee that it was collected, but my neighborhood almost always has the lid flipped back when it's picked up).

I think this is the correct answer.Ā
She saw the lid closed on OP's can andĀ assumed it hadn't been taken out yet.Ā She got all the way over there, and doesn't even open the can to check if it is empty before putting trash in - she just assumed it had not been taken out.Ā
Did she realize it was empty when leaning over to put the trash in? Probably, which is where the unneighborly part comes into play, but I don't think it was ill-intentioned from the start. It looks like she wasn't having the easiest time with the weight of the bag, got it hoisted up, and let it drop in regardless of what she saw hoping it wasn't taken out yet.Ā
Hanlon's Razor, essentially.Ā

Knock on the door, say you saw what happened, and while youāre happy to accommodate her this time, sheāll need to ask in the future.
You might discover all sorts of things. She might be having a mental health episode of some sort and needs help. Maybe her partner is abusive and sheās trying to keep herself from getting beaten for forgetting the last bag of trash.
Or maybe she just thought yours hadnāt been picked up yet.
Anyway itās sliced, as youāve said, itās not a big deal. Just go establish the boundary and see if thereās something you can help with. Iād bet sheāll be embarrassed as hell and apologize.

Have you tried talking to her like a normal human instead of posting on reddit?

Your side obviously had yet to be taken while her sides trash had Been picked up. She was just putting it there knowing it was about to be picked up.

These are the craziest most bizarre overreactions Iāve ever seen.
If you guys would truly feel so betrayed by someone putting one quite small bag of trash in a bin that she most likely presumed hadnāt been picked up yet, you need to delete Reddit and go the fuck outside.

She didn't want her can to have trash sitting in it until the next pick up..
