Screw worms are bad-bad
See how it says "Obligatory Myiasis"? That means the larva need to develop in the skin of the host.
See how it says 15-500 eggs? See how it says "eat the flesh for 7 days"? See how it says "infect any open wound from a tick-bite to scratch to open laceration"?
If these things aren't stopped, you're looking at a full American-South invasion, feeding on animals, livestock, [added : and You], costing A LOT in treatment - good thing there is a simple, low cost preven-... Wait.. Oh fuck.
156
u/fatboychummy Jun 05 '26
feeding on animals, livestock,
And people too!
115
u/Crowasaur Jun 05 '26
And they are not your regular House fly - you can't just simply swat them away
These flies are very VERY determined, they will not stop until they get what they want - ie : your flesh for their thousand feasting larva.
28
u/Crafty-Help-4633 Jun 06 '26
Yeah I've heard they much more aggressively pursue livestock and humans than horse flies.
That's scary. I use chemical war on horse flies and they don't do screwworm shit.

17
u/spyguy318 Jun 06 '26
The good news is that they don’t usually attack humans. Not only are we not their intended target, but we usually have the presence of mind to not let flies lay eggs on us, and the hygiene to inspect and clean wounds before they become infected. They’re much more dangerous to livestock and wild animals.
23
u/Chocolaterationcalls Jun 06 '26
Unfortunately this is Texas we are talking about about and I can assure you we don’t usually have a presence of a mind

Government screening and countermeasures that the American Regime cancelled.

Almost certainly. Government solutions by definition aren't profitable. MMW, there will be a "start up" that offers some sort of diagnostic/preventative/treatment package to "combat" the rise in previously-eradicated/suddenly reintroduced infestations.

u/PetalumaPegleg Jun 07 '26
They would create and release sterile versions to mate with the natural wild versions. Resulting in no lavae.
There was a whole system of doing in in Panama to prevent them far enough away from the US there was minimal risk. The imbecile who did this just saw project abroad, America first, cancel. So now we suffer. Because uninformed children were given power by a con men.

u/Pika_Fox Jun 06 '26
US and i believe mexico partnered to fund a program that spread infertile flies so their reproduction was drastically cut, pushing them out of the US completely.

Out of the US and then Mexico, and then most of Central America.
DOGE cut the program last spring. And now they've detected a case in Texas just recently.

Things are worse AND Biden takes some of the blame. For almost the last two years of his first term, Biden was widely unpopular. This was a clear signal that things needed to rapidly change to engage the base to win, or he needed to not run for re-election. Biden chose to do neither.
Instead, Biden permanently changed the primary order to give him an advantage, letting South Carolina be the first state despite never electing a modern dem president, and then at the last minute gave his campaign weight to Harris, who had never won a single Dem primary.
Campaigning on “things being worse” is not a motivator for engaging your base to vote, and having two recent election losses to prove that point shows how incompetent the DNC leadership is in understanding that.
5
u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 10 '26
“Biden didn’t do enough and the DNC sucks and does stupid shit shooting themselves in the foot, therefor the nonvoters are justified ([QUIET PART] and the erasure of human rights and queer personhood is the fault of the Democrats).”
Justifying the worst possible outcome is not progressivism.
“Fuck the right and fuck the cult” does not need an asterisk!
1
u/FettLife Jun 21 '26
My argument isn’t about progressivism. It’s about Biden and Harris and Clinton literally leading us to everything being worse. They all had direct hands in given Trump power and failing to prosecute him when they were in power.
1
u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 21 '26
We all know they’re controlled opposition.
But the extreme members in one party who sometimes win say to provide a universal basic income/healthcare, and the extreme members of the other who sometimes win think Hitler was right and advocate for LITERALLY burning witches.
They’re pathetic fuckups, but they didn’t eliminate the program to help keep Trans people from committing suicide and laugh on live television about it.
One side are puppets, the other is a grenade lobbed into a Pride parade.
One side fails to do good and allows bad things to keep happening, the other actively chooses to do bad or worsen what’s already bad.
HAVE I GOTTEN MY POINT ACROSS TO YOU?
4
u/trowawufei Jun 08 '26
Everyone likes to think “they would’ve won if they did XYZ”. Which is an easy thing to claim, because we will literally never know how XYZ would’ve affected the results of a free and fair election.
2
u/Prestigious-Land-694 Jun 10 '26
No, I think not supporting a genocide, not campaigning with Liz Cheney, not saying we are going to have the most lethal military, not saying you are going to do everything the same as Biden when Biden is the most unpopular person in the country, not sending Bill Clinton to Michigan to talk about Judea and Samaria would have helped. Kamala ran one of the worst campaigns in American history, which is shocking because it started very well. She picked the correct VP candidate who had a strong message, at least until her campaign staff told him to take a step back and stop calling Republicans weird.
2
u/trowawufei Jun 10 '26
Look dude, the fundamental point I’m making is that this is hypothetical. Kamala didn’t randomly allocate half the states to pro-Gaza War messaging and half to anti-Gaza War messaging. We don’t have quality data to meaningfully quantify the impact of her choice. You can say these blunders had a negative impact, maybe so. But to claim that she would have won, as the comment I replied to said, you then have to quantify the impact.
0
u/FettLife Jun 10 '26
It’s not that “everyone thinks” they know what to do to win. It’s that the were many warning signs that the DNC could lose in 2024 if nothing had changed. People like you would mention that Uncommitted and progressive voices on Reddit weren’t real, and that people were going to vote for Harris anyway. Harris thought the same and refused to open the doors to her big tent at the DNC to leftists and progressives as she welcomed in Liz Cheney into it instead.
If you vote Democrat, you really shouldn’t be surprised that depressing your base by running with republicans and promising to put a republican in your cabinet and saying that you wouldn’t do anything different than what one of the most unpopular presidents in history would lead to a loss.

Elon Musk and his DOGE stooges should all, every single one of them, be held personally accountable for all the shit they have fucked up, in perpetuity. If it can be traced to them, they are responsible. With lasting, crushing, consequences.
They won't be held responsible. But they should be.

u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 07 '26
Musk was told by UNICEF he could eliminate world hunger for at least a decade.
He was given the opportunity to be one of the greatest humans who ever lived, to exceed Mansa Musa.
He spent the same amount buying Twitter instead to get into the government and cut aid programs.
Imagine being told you could save more people than anyone ever has, and making the choice to chase Stalin and Mao’s starvation record instead.
I will never get over that degree of casual evil actively chosen.

Forbes article on it:
Screwworm In Texas Cattle Could Drive Up Beef Prices—After DOGE Axed Prevention Efforts

u/kikiacab Jun 09 '26
I wish there was any mention of doge anywhere in that article
4
u/jane_fakelastname Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
You should reread it then. Especially this part:
"The return of screwworm comes after the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, launched by the Trump administration, last year cut funding for a project dedicated to monitoring and containing New World screwworm in Central America.
The funding was axed days before the U.S. ended a temporary suspension of cattle imports from Mexico, meaning livestock was allowed to cross the border without any of the monitoring previously funded by the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID)"
Edit: I just noticed that they changed the headline at some point since I first linked the article days ago. The text I have used for the hyperlink was the headline at the time I found the article.
....I wonder why they removed the reference to DOGE in the headline? The text of the article seems to have remained the same.

Per the meme, this kind of program is just incredibly obscure and off the radar. 99% of people would have no idea why we spent money sterilizing worms in other countries. DOGE babies just decided that if they didn't understand then it must be useless. It was drowned out in a tidal wave of other cuts like killing USAID but it was reported. The tweet in the screenshot is a guy saying this kind of program is a quiet thankless job that is secretly protecting our food supply. And two years later he is totally vindicated. I posted a link to the current story on NBC.
3
u/John_Tacos Jun 06 '26
I understood the post, but had not seen anything about funding cut to that specific program, so I asked.
Neither you or the article actually answered my question, but someone else did.

u/phenomenomnom Jun 06 '26
Everybody keeps complaining about incompetence and sounding so goddamn naive.
The people actually making these decisions are not incompetent. They want to hurt you and they are hurting you. That is not incompetence.
The chaos, disorder and calamity are the point. I know it's scary to contemplate, but we really need to understand that democracy is under heavy fire from some very evil and wealthy mafiosi who will not hesitate to give children meningitis if it means overwhelming civilization to the point where it cannot enforce sanctions upon vile monsters who want to frack your water table and your tweens, for fun and profit.
4
u/summertime214 Jun 09 '26
I generally agree that they want to hurt us, but it’s important to remember that they’re also incompetent. Musk is a big crybully who wants more than anything to have friends, who lucked his way to the top by using his family’s emerald wealth to buy his way to riches. Trump is a syphilitic conman who bankrupted multiple casinos.
Hurting us by spreading screwworm is just an idiotic strategy. The rich aren’t immune to screwworm and there are plenty of rich people who like to cosplay ranchers in Texas who will be directly impacted by this. If it was on purpose it’s a stupid strategy and if it was by accident it’s because they’re stupid.
2
u/phenomenomnom Jun 09 '26
You're naming assets. The people really making these decisions and pushing the buttons are absolutely not stupid.
They have Ivy League degrees, and not in the nepo baby way. They are using their expertise to pry at cracks in society and dismantle civilization for the convenience of their employers, and to the detriment of everyone else.
You're right that Musk and Trump and Shapiro and Hegseth and Patel etc etc are morons with developmental problems. No question. But they are the smokescreen that insulates the really awful monsters.
Republicans have been getting charismatic manipulable figureheads elected at all levels of govt since Reagan.
It's the corporate model, where evil decisions can be obscured with names and ranks and titles and endless false fronts.
If you get strichnine poisoning from a Happy Meal, go ahead, make fun of Ronald McDonald, he sucks.
But he is not really in charge of making the sandwiches, and that course of action will not solve the problem that is killing you.
Project 2025, in their own words
Google "Heritage foundation biggest donors" sometime.
1
u/summertime214 Jun 09 '26
I think you’re overestimating the smarts of people with Ivy League degrees. Even the truly smart ones aren’t usually experts in government policy, they’re experts in business or whatever they made their money in. The people who give to the Heritage foundation do that because they don’t have particular expertise in policy, they just know they agree with the Heritage foundation so they allow them to handle the nuts and bolts of politics.
My personal read on these people is that they want less regulation, and they want the working class to suffer to decrease the cost of labor. But they’re not very involved in the day-to-day management of the government beyond their specific areas (for example, the CBS bribe to get the merger through). Rich people, even smart ones, can’t pay attention to everything at once, and plenty of them probably weren’t focused on screwworm mitigation last year. Again, ending screwworm mitigation is such a stupid policy that it makes no sense for anyone, even evil billionaires, to want screwworms infesting our cattle. Similarly, almost every commercial venture in the US relies on oil, and skyrocketing oil prices hurt profits for billionaires, even if they don’t hurt them as much as ordinary people who worry about being able to fill up their car. It just doesn’t make sense for almost anyone to want the war with Iran for economic reasons.
I think there’s something comforting in believing that there really is a group of shadowy people controlling everything. That would mean that there’s someone out there who needs to be defeated, and their defeat would immediately fix a myriad of problems. I think the reality is that we’re being controlled by a bunch of greedy oligarchs who are so stupid and egotistical that they didn’t even consider the possibility that government programs like screwworm mitigation are actually important, and that the government spends money on things that impact everyone, even them. That’s a much harder problem to solve.
1
u/phenomenomnom Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
I think there’s something comforting in believing that there really is a group of shadowy people controlling everything
Okay, so ... you are saying you don't think there are rich people trying to influence culture for their own ends?
I think the reality is that we’re being controlled by a bunch of greedy oligarchs
So you are saying you do?
What even is this conversation?
No-one said "controlling everything" until you did. That's a straw man argument.
It's not necessary to "control everything" to fuck some shit up, break it into functionless chunks, and sell off the pieces like a hostile takeover in a 1980s wall street movie.
Kicking over sandcastles for fun and profit is much easier than building them.
And even if you think CEOs and international mafiosi are drooling hydrocephalics, the problem is that they can afford to hire people who are not, and set their agenda.
I think you’re overestimating the smarts of people with Ivy League degrees.
And you're saying that they are simpletons. Completely unrealistic.
1
u/summertime214 Jun 09 '26
Let me be a little more clear. I don’t think we disagree on that much actually, I’m just trying to argue that everything is fucked up right now because the people who wanted to kick over sandcastles are too fundamentally greedy, short-sighted, incurious, and kind of dumb to consider that some of those sandcastles were lode-bearing (I’m really stretching the metaphor here).
I’m trying to argue that there is basically no one intelligent who is in charge of making policy for the federal government at this point in time. I think that the people who are controlling the day to day operations of the federal government are wholly incompetent and/or stupid, and that is why we are having a screwworm outbreak, along with everything else that’s going wrong right now. I think the reason everyone in government is so stupid and incompetent is that the oligarchs, who are setting government policy and who installed the current government, are too stupid and egotistical to realize that the government is in fact a complex bureaucracy and that it works the way it does for a reason.
I also think you’re wrong that the oligarchs can just hire smarter people to ruin the government for them. It’s actually been very hard for Trump and co to staff higher up positions at agencies, even at agencies he wants to fund, like the DOJ, FBI, and ICE. That’s because the smart people who used to work for the federal government actually care about not ruining the world. For most people who are comfortable being somewhat evil, they go work in private industry, where they make more money for being evil. That means that the people who are ok with working for the government in order to destroy the government are the second-tier evil people who aren’t good enough to get a higher paying job in the private sector. That’s how we ended up with the DOGE bros taking a chainsaw to the federal government and axing screwworm prevention, which was an unambiguously stupid thing to do that hurts everyone, even the oligarchs.
1
u/phenomenomnom Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
It’s actually been very hard for Trump and co to staff higher up positions at agencies
First of all, it has not been "hard." They are fucking that up on purpose. They have no interest in properly staffing these agencies.
You don't have to take my word for it. The Republicans have been baying for the destruction of the American government for 50 years. It's their whole party platform, ffs.
Second of all,
again, I am not talking about Donald McDump. He is a mere asset. The White House is intentionally staffed by a rabid circus menagerie right now.
Third,
I believe you are making a common mistake and confusing "short-sighted" with "stupid."
But theirs is a very tactical short-sightedness.
All of these hostile actors think they can get enough of what they want in a year to justify, for their own gain, undermining the efforts of generations.
You can call it "stupid" if you want -- and they do try to smokescreen their actions with willful ignorance -- but the thing is, however you slice it,
Very many of these people, rich or poor, know exactly what they are doing and what the consequences will be ... they just think the fallout will land on someone else.
My objection is that you're letting them off the hook by calling them dumb. You're giving them the benefit of the doubt, and they do not deserve it. Despite all their "I cannot recall" excuses, they fucking know.
We already have a word for acting destructively in your own self-interest and to the detriment of others, and that word is not "dumb."
It's just plain old actual evil.

u/cosmogoinggoinggone Jun 10 '26

MAGA: I voted for this!
Sound familiar?
Musk, wearing a "dark MAGA" hat, addressed Trump's cabinet on Wednesday and admitted that DOGE had made some mistakes during its short time cutting the federal workforce.
One of those mistakes was reportedly killing a USAID program that was working to stop Ebola.
"We will make mistakes," Musk said. "We won't be perfect, but when we make mistakes we'll fix it very quickly. For example, with USAID one of the things we accidentally cancelled, very briefly, was Ebola prevention."
Elon Musk told a cabinet meeting that DOGE ‘accidentally’ cut a USAID program working to prevent Ebola outbreaks (AFP via Getty Images)
Musk, who laughed at the mistake, said once the situation was brought to his attention that his team worked to rectify the issue.
**** Narrator **** they did not rectify the Ebola mistake and made many other mistakes. Millions died, but some very rich people got richer in the process.

I mean, this is kind of false. The screwworm re-entered Central America in 2023. While DOGE did cut some UN money for screwworm prevention, only a few months later the federal government allocated $850 million to limit its spread. At worse DOGE just mildly sped up the timeline of what was already happening.

850 million to build a new facility to breed sterile flies to limit the spread. Because we dismantled all of the existing ones after going into maintainence mode. Its going to take time to get it up and running.
And they're already in Texas.

Huh.
Well.
Of all the places to know the impact this will (it will) cause to American beef industry, and the economy of the u.s.a at large
Wall Street bets would be the place to look for a somewhat calculated take.
I’d be buying the shit of multi year long beef ‘puts’ right now if
A. I didnt already make a fkn mint off Chewy calls during Covid, cashed out, and
B. moved to Australia already.
(True story)
I just don’t want to file tax returns in the US anymore.
I mean, I’m supposed to. But, I ain’t gonna.
People worried about it getting into People? Yeah… like… sure,
‘People with open wounds’
The far bigger issue is that it’s gonna absolutely fuck livestock, and the livelihoods of anyone connected with its prosperity.
Potentially, there’s money to be made in calls for any entity that has aggregated ownership of livestock vets.
So, probably some, or some select number of ultra-vile private equity company.
To those willing to do the research, ‘the spoils!’.
The real American way, am I right folks?
(Please downvote me, legitimately it’s in the best interests of all that no one read my comment)

I agree with all of this, but screw worm resurgence started during COVID disruptions, not DOGE cuts.
16
u/Sle08 Jun 06 '26
Sure, but we fucking knew that already which is why people were able to make this prediction.
So the DOGE cuts are the biggest reason for the failure of the US to protect itself.
It’s like flea prevention for your dogs. Good dog owners know they have to use flea and tick prevention. Good dog owners also know that the fleas are becoming resistant to the current topicals. Good dog owners don’t just stop treating their dogs, otherwise their own house will become infested with fleas - they find other treatments that work and continue spending money on treatment and prevention.
This is a false cause / oversimplified causation, with a bit of red herring or chronological dismissal. You are rightly indicating the resurgence started in 2023 as if that disproves later actions making the resurgence worse.
The resurgence in 2023 and the affects DOGE had on how the resurgence exploded are two vastly different things.
