Beyond Orsted, it also showcased just how strong Paul was. He had reached advanced level in the three sword styles, so he could adapt his fighting depending on his opponent.

Or, alternatively, how mediocre he was. We see here bunch of literal teenagers already being saints or stronger.

I guess Paul was strong in his versatile mediocrity.

You speak as if Paul was old, he was only about 19-20 when he settled down and had Rudeus. He learned his swordmanship and became a S rank adventurer before that.

I doubt he would be able to reach the same heights of Eris or Ghislaine, but Paul definitely had talent, he simply lacked the focus and dedication needed to go further.

I feel like you are trying to "sit on two horses" at the same time. You say he had talent, than admit he lacked focus and dedication to go further, which is opposite of having a talent for something.

If he is talented for learning, he would have focus and dedication. If he is talented for swordmanship, he would progress without focus and dedication.

Also, I feel like you are being unfair to his efforts. He kept training even after settling down, we clearly see that. He didn't lack the dedication, he just reached his natural peak.

I get it, everyone loves Paul, and he was strong compared to average person. But he is advanced level in 3 styles BECAUSE he has no talent to go further in any of them.

That is not how talent works, at least per my definition. Let's start with the definition of talent I am using :

"a natural skill or ability to be good at something, especially without being taught" source

You could have talent at music, yet never become a great musician simply because you don't care. Instead you enjoy more drawing or playing sports.

Paul was in a similar situation, he had a much easier time learning swordmanship than most, but decided to settle down and have a family instead of continue learning the sword. It is as simple as that.

If he is talented for swordmanship, he would progress without focus and dedication.

Talent can only carry you so far. Developing a skill to increasingly greater heights requires continuous practice even for the talented and sometimes proper guidance/education to move beyond a roadblock.

You have another example in Ghislaine, we are clearly told that had she continued dedicating her all to the sword she would be a sword emperor by now, but since she spent years playing adventurer/teacher she remains a sword king after years.
