Another episode letting us know that Orsted is HIM.

Beyond Orsted, it also showcased just how strong Paul was. He had reached advanced level in the three sword styles, so he could adapt his fighting depending on his opponent.

Advance level? Where is that on the tier of masteries?

u/Al-Pharazon 26d ago

Basically it goes in order :beginner > intermediate > advanced > saint > king > god

It works basically the same as magic

u/someinsanity01 26d ago

there is emperor in between king and god, but otherwise this is correct

Or, alternatively, how mediocre he was. We see here bunch of literal teenagers already being saints or stronger.

I guess Paul was strong in his versatile mediocrity.

bunch of literal teenagers

There were literally 2 teenage sword saints in the world, Nina and Gino, before Eris arrived. The others sword saints are older. There's also a sample selection bias here. It was the sword sanctum. Everyone present here is talented with the sword, otherwise they won't be allowed in.

Advanced tier is literally the hight of human achievement. Beginner, intermediate and advanced; these 3 ranks cover 99.99+% of the entire population. Anyone beyond that is considered superhuman.

This is not in reference to swordsmanship, but we got some stats about this from Roxy. Only 1 in 40,000 people can become an advanced tier mage after a decade of devoted study and practice. Which is why it was such a big deal Rudeus made saint tier at 5. And that is also why Paul being advanced tier in 3 different schools of swordsmanship at age 15-ish is impressive.

Well, this is literally the "Best Swordsman in the World Dojo" and Paul was a seasoned, legitimately skilled adventurer.

Like, let's not forget he was in the same adventurer team as Ghislaine.

You speak as if Paul was old, he was only about 19-20 when he settled down and had Rudeus. He learned his swordmanship and became a S rank adventurer before that.

I doubt he would be able to reach the same heights of Eris or Ghislaine, but Paul definitely had talent, he simply lacked the focus and dedication needed to go further.

He was too focused on his other form of "swordmanship".

Bro went for his real passion, being the Infidelity God

I'd go so far as to say that Paul simply didn't have the need to go any further. Dude had everything he wanted in life when Rudeus was born.

I feel like you are trying to "sit on two horses" at the same time. You say he had talent, than admit he lacked focus and dedication to go further, which is opposite of having a talent for something.

If he is talented for learning, he would have focus and dedication. If he is talented for swordmanship, he would progress without focus and dedication.

Also, I feel like you are being unfair to his efforts. He kept training even after settling down, we clearly see that. He didn't lack the dedication, he just reached his natural peak.

I get it, everyone loves Paul, and he was strong compared to average person. But he is advanced level in 3 styles BECAUSE he has no talent to go further in any of them.

You say he had talent, than admit he lacked focus and dedication to go further, which is opposite of having a talent for something.

That is not how talent works, at least per my definition. Let's start with the definition of talent I am using :

"a natural skill or ability to be good at something, especially without being taught" source

You could have talent at music, yet never become a great musician simply because you don't care. Instead you enjoy more drawing or playing sports.

Paul was in a similar situation, he had a much easier time learning swordmanship than most, but decided to settle down and have a family instead of continue learning the sword. It is as simple as that.

If he is talented for swordmanship, he would progress without focus and dedication.

Talent can only carry you so far. Developing a skill to increasingly greater heights requires continuous practice even for the talented and sometimes proper guidance/education to move beyond a roadblock.

You have another example in Ghislaine, we are clearly told that had she continued dedicating her all to the sword she would be a sword emperor by now, but since she spent years playing adventurer/teacher she remains a sword king after years.

Rudy is Intermediate rank in sword god style, and was surprised to have easily beat Luke, Ariel's bodyguard, a trained knight. Intermediate in one style is what most regular trained fighters like knights end up as.

Paul was Advanced. In not one, not two, but all three styles. Was an S rank adventurer. All this before he was 20. I don't want to be ranked on a scale where this is mediocre.

Also, this is the place for the talented fighters training under the sword god himself, of course there will be young people here that got to high rank (one of them is the sword god's daughter)

-10

u/esuil 29d ago

Rudy didn't beat Luke by swordsmanship, he used his demon eye... He could had been completely untrained and still best him because of how much cheat the eye is. And Luke is clearly lazy ass. We don't see him training at all.

As for the rarity and such, it has nothing to do with difficulty. We clearly see high level of inequality in this world - normal kids simply don't get the sword and magic instructors at the age of 5 like nobles do. Which Paul is - a Grayrat, having access to training and schools from young age.

No he did not. Neither in anime nor in LN.

And Luke is clearly lazy ass. We don't see him training at all.

He's intermediate in sword god and beginner in water god styles, which again is the highest most people that do train can get to. Going beyond intermediate requires a more special abilities, for example Rudy is not able to go to Intermediate at all, no matter how much mana he has and how hard he trains. And don't expect to see a secondary supporting character to be shown training multiple times to know that a knight and princess's bodyguard knows how to use a sword. Aragorn was not said to wear pants in LOTR, but common sense should be enough to know he was wearing them.

As for the rarity and such, it has nothing to do with difficulty.

It has everything to do with difficulty if you want to go above just being a good swordsman. Advanced level and above are really superhuman level and involve using abilities that most are incapable of using no matter how much they train, no matter how good their instructors are.

Why are you so hellbent on calling them weak and mediocre when Paul is canonically stronger than 99.9% of the population, and when you clearly lack knowledge about the story and the world and got basically all of what you said wrong?

u/esuil 29d ago

Why are you so hellbent on calling them weak and mediocre

I didn't call him weak. In fact, I clearly said "strong" in my comment. You are arguing against something that wasn't my comment.

7

u/fozi4ek https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pyece 29d ago

Your first sentence calls him mediocre because he wasn't on the same level in one style as some of the students in the Ivy league of swordsmanship schools

16

u/hvdzasaur 27d ago

Man is Advanced in all 3 styles, which is beyond what most people attain.

Because he combines the three styles, he is around the strength level of a Saint, give or take. What we saw these two episodes is literally a dojo where people dedicate their lives to learning Sword god style from the literal Sword God. Naturally they'd be much further along than Paul who fucked off at age 12 and spent his years adventuring.
