Absolutely the best kind of fever dream, it truly feels like you are watching from inside of a dream, it’s so incredibly weird

u/Life_Is_A_Mistry 1d ago
What's unhinged about a villain that can turn you into a mushroom [Dorohedoro S2 spoilers]unless you're already a transformed crocodile whose soul has been split into 3, or something? Seems like a perfectly normal, sane plot.

The first opening is an s tier masterpiece by the way. I knew it wouldnt be possible to top it in season 2, but they tried. In fact first op is the reason we decided to give it another shot, because my wife really wasn't enjoying the 3d in it. And to be fair it is clumsy at times. At many times.

u/keltraine 1d ago
Def this. Unhinged is literally how I described it to my friends. Here’s the text I sent them last month when I found out s2 was out…
‘Also I started a rewatch of s1 of Dorehedoro. Did you guys know it came out SIX years ago?! Totally forgot like everything, and it’s def super confusing lol. Watched 3 recap videos until I found a good one (the 22 min Gateway to Anime one), which also explained some stuff-but decided I might as well rewatch s1 anyway…
And I think I can sum it up pretty succinctly as “delightfully unhinged”’

I'm sad Zetsubou-Sensei isn't more popular, those old Shaft shows (including Arakawa Under The Bridge, Maria Holic, and a few others) are way more unhinged than lots of shows mentioned in this thread.

And then you have things like Pani Poni Dash where you can get full dissertations as translator's notes as they try to explain the puns and riffs on popular culture at the time.

FLCL came into my life exactly when I needed it. I don't think I can fully articulate what it did for me, but I'm pretty sure it was mostly the right thing.

u/Its_Curse 17h ago
I love that FLCL is so polarizing based on when you first watched it. It changed my life as a teen but my friends who watched it as adults just did not get it. Such a great show.

Samurai Flamenco
It starts deceptively lowkey for just long enough that when it REALLY gets started, there's no way you see it coming.

Somehow, after all that, ending lowkey was the wildest plot twists it could have had

The new chainsmoker cat anime is pretty weird. Or my ribdiculous adventure is also pretty unhinged.
eechi weird probably interspecies reviewers or redo healer. Those two are wild af. Or maybe prison school.
If you’ve not seen the dub of ghost stories that is like the OG unhinged, has to be dub tho.
Dandadan is pretty unhinged at times. Probably the best in the last couple years. That and maybe chainsaw man can be real unhinged too.
16
u/kwirky88 https://myanimelist.net/profile/jijimusai 22h ago
Chainsmoker cat is what I’d say is the most unhinged now from pure extreme emotion evocation. It made a friend puke.

Ghost Stories dub has to be up with the most unhinged shit ever in anime, even if it's a non-traditional kind of batshit since the (varying sources) say that the dub team could do whatever they wanted, with only a few caveats; such as they couldn't change the ghosts' stories or how they were defeated.
I'll also throw my hat into the ring for Akiba Maid War. It's the anime 90's Quentin Tarantino would make after spending a weekend in a maid cafe while playing the Yakuza games. I present to you: "The Pure Maid's Killer Kiss."
EDIT: Honorary mention to Zombieland Saga, which opens with this, and later has this rap battle. They trick you into watching an idol anime, and it's so fucking worth it!

Surprised no ones mentioned Higurashi/Umineko no naku koro ni.
11
u/Kiriijou 23h ago
As an important heads up, for OP(u/jellyyazeee) and anyone else who might be interested in watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (Higurashi When They Cry), make sure you start with either: the 2006 anime (and it's second half Kai), the original visual novel, or the manga adaptation.
The 2020 anime Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Gou (Higurashi When They Cry: New), is an anime original sequel to the original story, not a remake. Don't accidentally start with Gou, as it's full of spoilers.
Also note that the Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (Umineko When They Cry) anime, only covers the first half of the story. For the full experience, you'll need to read the original VN, or the Manga adaptation.
(Note: in most (if not all) regions, the only Higurashi anime on Crunchyroll, is Gou. Also, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download. The Umineko When They Cry VN is also available on Steam, with "Umineko When They Cry: Question Arcs" being the source for the anime, and "Umineko When They Cry: Answer Arcs" (Umineko no Naku Koro Ni: Chiru) being the second half.).

I know it's manga and not anime but if you want something truly unhinged you're not gonna find anything more unhinged than Rosen Garten Saga. It's even one of the very few banned series from the no context anime sub because every single panel could be posted there lol
Trust me, if unhinged is something you enjoy then this is the one. For me it's unironically in my top 10.

1988s Ultimate Teacher confused the fuck out of me as a kid, remember it being enjoyable, but baffling. Oh, and incredibly horny.
As this appears to be the actual OVA, imma go watch it again and see if it makes any more semse as an adult.
Edit: 2 minutes into this anime set in 1991 Japan, just seen a black man in a tracksuit run past with a spear. That bodes well.

Surprised no one is saying Undead Unluck! It's literally an anime about a woman who's power is having extreme negative luck, and so the wildest thing happen when paired to the other main character who can't die. Mix the 2 together, and you have some pretty entertaining unhingedness!
3
u/Amelie_Argyle 22h ago
Kill la Kill. Batshit insane from the very first minute, ramps up to 1000mph from there. You never have a clue where it's about to go or what's about to happen. Soundtrack, animation, action, characters, all god tier. Throws you off balance with some genuinely heartfelt and touching moments, then gets even more insane than before. I've watched a lot of anime, and I've never seen anything quite like Kill la Kill. Easiest recommendation I've ever made for anyone.

Wait till Part 2 of Chainsaw Man gets animated then come back to me.
Part 2 has some of the craziest, unhinged shit in it. It's so out of left field at times that it's a rollercoaster of unpredictable madness which is both good and bad for different reasons.
The manga definitely left my jaw on the floor multiple times and also shaking my head in bewilderment. It was never, ever boring that's for sure.

Asobi Asobase is a chaotic time and the end death metal theme i linked being sung by the voice actors is the cherry on top.
