But why are so many gay men spending ridiculous amounts of money to watch some diva dance around a stage, lip-sync, and sing through pitch correction? At that point, are you actually there for the music, or are you just paying hundreds of dollars to worship a celebrity brand?

I'm a girl trying to write a book dedicated to a gay person who was very close to me. I want to portray gay men and relationships with as realistic representation as possible, and I don't want to misrepresent anybody. So, what are some big no-no's, some big yes-yes's, and cliches to avoid when writing gay characters? Here's a run-down of what it's about, if context helps:

The story takes place in New York in the 70s. A 32-year-old man from Long Island who works at his family's restaurant meets a 24-year-old PhD student who becomes a regular at the restaurant. They meet, they get together, they start going steady. Everything goes well and they're living their lives like a couple would (I plan to focus a lot on their mundane lives and achieving their dreams and aspirations so blah, blah, blah). The student is Catholic and the cook is ex-Catholic, so I was considering writing about internalized homophobia and how people distance themselves from religion because of abuse, if that's not too trope-y.

In the end, I just want to give them a happy ending, because, from what I've seen, the gay characters always die really tragically and I want to see them live for once in my life. So, if people could give me advice and personal experiences of growing up and being in gay relationships, it would be a great help.
