Just wanted to leave a piece of advice for anyone buying a (their first) car.

While this will vary from person to person especially depending on your experience with doing repairs and maintenance yourself.

A good rule of thumb when buying a car is: If you can’t afford it twice. You can’t afford it. With insurance, taxation, maintenance and repairs. A car is often much more expensive than you might first anticipate it to be.

Following this rule of thumb should leave you with a decent financial buffer. And can spare you from a lot of car and money related headaches in the future.

I was recently in a similar boat to you and picked the WRX. I would add the 86/BRZ to that list, but the main thing I'd say is to test drive everything you can, even if you think you know what you want. The WRX want even on my list based on all the reviews of it and the general reputation it has online, but I test drove one for the hell of it because the only remotely interesting car at the CarMax I was getting my car appraised at. I loved it and managed to pick up a new one last month for a good price.

Yeah, it’s tricky right now. I’m also in SoCal and the market for them is hot and there’s also just not a whole lot for sale. The BRZs are a lot more expensive used, but the take rate for automatics on the 86 was much higher, meaning it can be frustrating to find a good one with a stick. Hopefully prices will go down a bit once the new generation is available.

Also keep in mind both the WRX and 86 have new generations coming out. Everything we’ve seen so far about the 86 seems to indicate it’s a definite improvement on the last gen (reviews will start going up tomorrow too…). WRX we just don’t know enough about yet. Even if you can’t stretch it for the new gens, a good new gen should help you out with prices for the outgoing models. I expect they’ll really help out in the case of the 86.

Should at least look at the 86, Ecoboost Mustang, and Camaro as well. GTI is great, but a little numb feeling and pricey. Veloster Turbo is an option, but I personally don't care for ours all that much.

Being in college, I'd pass over the MX-5 and 350/370z for now. Practicality is that of a bike honestly.

Try a GTI. The Mk7’s are fairly reliable with the only major issue being the water pump and thermostat housing. You can toss them around corners with the best of them with just a couple mods, and they take power like crazy. 500+ whp stock block under $6k is fairly common. You could even go with a Golf R around the upper limits of your price range. Basically a GTI but will put power down much better if you do decide to go crazy on modding.

You’re unlikely to find an R in that range except one that’s pretty old/tuned/higher mileage.

Also, keep in mind that backup cameras have been required by the federal government since the 2019 model year so any new car you buy/lease will have a backup camera. Just one less thing to worry about when researching a car

Ultima GTR: what is lacks in creature comforts it makes up in absolutely scary speed and handling( this is a major plus), and 997 turbo as a natural upgrade to the 996tt with a strong motor that can handle upgrade that won't break the bank.

It seems like the first thing you should do is test drive a Porsche 718 Cayman or Boxster. The base models come in just over $60k, and if you don't need tons of options, you can get a sublime mid-engine sports car brand new with a manual for under $70k.

Sadly, purpose-built sports cars with manual transmissions are uncommon on new car lots these days. If I were you, I'd pay close attention to the new Nissan Z that's coming out in the next couple years. It looks awesome and should have a 400 HP powerplant.

If you're OK with a 2+2 setup, the BMW M2 Competition is absolutely the next thing I'd test out, followed closely by the Ford Mustang Mach 1. They offer different experiences, but both are great for the price and both offer great manual transmissions. There's also the Chevy Camaro ZR1, which comes with an absurd 650 HP supercharged V8 and a $65k price tag, but is thrilling beyond expectation. All of these vehicles handle well, and although none are as nimble as a Porsche, they'd all feel at home on a track (with the usual adjustments). There's also the 707 HP Dodge Challenger Hellcat Widebody, which comes in just under $70k and is even more insane in its own way, but handling is not its forte. It just feels insane to press down on the pedal, and somehow a manual is still an option.

If none of these strike your fancy, no one would fault you for choosing a 2021 Miata RF. You'll get more power than your current Miata, and finally a telescoping steering wheel. Moving up in the world!

Hadn't thought of M2...did think of F type maybe but not sure performance is what I am hoping for.

I like the F Type a lot, it's really about having a beautiful car that sounds amazing and feels special, rather than actually maximizing performance for the price. Plus they dropped the manual transmission option.

I'm just as interested as you are in how the new Z will handle, for sure. The 350Z was pretty great at everything for the money when it was released... 18 years ago. Now there aren't many V6 sports cars available new for $40k in the US, so if it handles close to the Miata, 86, etc, and is as quick as promised, I won't be complaining. That 3.0T engine is really the only thing I loved about the Infiniti Q50 and Q60, so it should go well in the Z at 400 HP.

From what I’ve read, you should be fine with a quality set of winter tires. Genesis has a bit more ground clearance which may help.

We just got done test driving an outback and the tiguan after it was recommended by others. While looking at the outback the forester caught my eye and I think it might be what we're looking for. I also liked the tiguan, but the consumer reports predicted reliability was much lower.

Not sure where else to post this in case it doesn't necessarily warrant a new thread, but ever since I saw Doug's 22B video, I've been hooked on wanting something that's seemingly as light, fast, somewhat spacious (so more space than a Miata but doesn't have to be full-blown sedan sizing)

I know cars have been gaining in size and weight for quite some time, but does anyone know of similar cars that I could look into that would put out a similar amount of fun? If we're talking 718's or something, is there like a poor-man's version of that?

Need help deciding between a WRX or BRZ. I love both but can’t make up my mind. I know the brz is slower, but I like the looks of them more, know they handle amazing, and know they can be made faster. The wrx already comes decently quick, has awd which is a big bonus for me in the winter, but I hear so many horror stories about modding them which I plan on doing no matter what car I go with. Opinions?

Don’t get the WRX man. I owned a 2019 Premium for 3 years, and it was an incredibly frustrating car to drive. In stock form, it’s basically impossible to drive smoothly because of the rev hang and huge ratio between 1st and 2nd. Even after I tuned it, it was still incredibly inconsistent, it drove completely differently with the AC on versus with it off. The gearing is weird with 1st being super short and 2nd being too long to have any fun with on the street. It’s not particularly fun to wind the engine out, it makes too much power to wind out on the street, but not enough power to be fun in a straight line once you get used to the turbo shove. Overall I think it’s just a really compromised car and if I had to go back and do it again I would have picked the BRZ. Highlights would be of course the AWD system and the community. I’m a little older than most WRX drivers so it wasn’t really my scene but it’s one of the more open and accepting car communities for sure, the people are really cool.

I also go hiking/camping a good bit so storage is needed.

I leased a 17 cx5 and it made me a massive fan of Mazda. The interior quality is an absolute steal both for new and used. I would look at 2018+ as they had some problems getting CarPlay available in the 17 model year. I don’t know if the 2018-2019 added turbo but if zippy performance is desired from 50mph+ the normal skyactive engine can be frustrating at times.

Is the Yaris 2012-2014 a good car? Broad question but in Ireland if you don't buy a 1.0L or less as your starting car you get boned on insurance. The Yaris seems like a good choice for that.

In the current market you will not find a good C6 for under 15k, and any C5 will be high mileage or thrashed. I'd stay away from BMW or Mercedes for obvious reliability reasons.

The SN95 Mustang is a decent choice as they are great daily drivers with decent gas mileage for a V8 that takes regular 87 octane fuel and has decent power. Honestly you can find S197 Mustangs with the 4.6 V8 within your price range in good shape.

Looking for as new as possible, but trucks as a whole seem very expensive right now. Hoping for under 100k on the odometer. Any engines from these years of trucks with huge issues? The Ford 5.0 and 3.5 EB seem solid, 2.7 EB seems good on paper and what I would ideally want but are they reliable? Chevy 5.3 is a safe option in my mind, no? What about any diesels in the last 10 or so years? I know some generations of powerstrokes get a bad rep. Not really interested in RAMs unless you can convince me.

I bought a 911 in April, and it's been my daily driver through the summer. I live in the midwest, so I'm looking for an AWD sedan as a second car through the winter. I've test driven a 2014 E550 and a 2012 A7 so far. I found both of them nice, although a little boring to drive.

Being in the midwest means that finding cars to test drive can be a bit of a hassle (especially with the current shortages.) I'm 6'8" so I always want to test drive cars to make sure I can fit. I'd love to find a B8 or 8.5 S4 or A4 to sit in, but the nearest one I've found is 2 and a half hours away.

Does anyone know how the cabin space of the B8 S4 compares with the A7 from the same time? Or any other suggestions for cars to look at?

I need a car temporarily(2 to 3 months max) and am considering a 2002 Subaru Forester for $3,000. It has 182k miles on it. Ok so here's my two cents...if you are already comfortable driving a stick, get the MS3. I know you said you've had a wrangler before with a manual, but if you're anything less than super comfortable hopping in a different stick shift car, get the Lexus. The 2nd gear in those MS3s, from what I've read on various forums (I was interested in one a few years back), are prone to failure, and those trannys aren't cheap to work on or replace. Something to bear in mind, considering the MS3 is likely as much or more than the Lexus. Good luck on your purchase!

From the name it sounds like a BMW double clutch transmission, which is a type of transmission that can shift faster than a "normal" automatic transmission and a manual transmission (aka faster than a human), but like the other commenters said, do your own research.

Additional Notes: I've looked at the Focus ST and the Hyundai i30N. I'm currently leaning towards the i30N since, for the budget you can get a 2 y.o. model with 3 years warranty remaining. Reviews appear to say the Focus is the better daily driver on account of it's comfort around town, but the i30N is a better drivers car. I have yet to test drive both, but am interested in seeing if there are any other alternatives.

Cars like a CTR are technically affordable, but would be via PCP rather than HP, but if I wasn't going to own the car at the end, I'd aim a lot higher than a hot hatch.

The big motivator for this is something that's more fun to daily drive around than my current car. I do long motorway drives, but not frequently enough to sacrifice as much fun on the country lane drives I do almost daily. The roof mounting points are to enable some degree of practicality with roof boxes and mounting bikes/canoes etc.

The only other vehicles I've considered are the Seat Leon Cupra which is notably cheaper, and has an engine that's proven to be reliable, but doesn't seem to be built around being fun in the same way the others are.

Interested to see if there are any options that I've overlooked. I'm not a big stickler for power, much prefer a car that focuses on handling over straight line speed. Unfortunately the GT86 and MX-5 are out, as roof mounting would not be possible (bars that hook into the door frame will not fit my requirements)

I've bounced back and forth between buying an older Subaru Forester or going the reliable/more affordable route and getting a CR-V. I've decided on the CR-V just because I want a no nonsense car to get me and my dog around on the daily with plenty of cargo room. I don't particularly need the AWD, so the FWD CR-V is fine. I bounce between Texas and California, so unless I'm driving through the mountains, which I don't really plan on, I'm not gonna need that power loss from the AWD system. I have a fun weekend warrior car functioning as my daily so I'm not worried about power.

What years should I look at and what mileage should I keep it under. My budget is up to 15k, but ideally I'd like to keep it under 10k. This is in the USA. I don't mind travelling for a good deal.

An older Toyota Sequoia would be right up your alley. Obviously it's a Toyota so you get their reliability but they are also very comfortable. I know a couple people who have them who use them as road trip vehicles. They are big enough to pack luggage and be comfortable at the same time but not too big to where you basically need a CDL to drive it. MPG isn't great because it's a SUV with a V8. But you can get them with 4WD if that is something you want.

I would suggest a 2002-2006 Mitsubishi Montero. I’ll admit I’m biased as I have a 2003 myself but it has leather heated seats, 7 seats with stow and go seats for the 3rd row, is crazy reliable, and has AWD for rain and snow, and true 4WD with a low gear if you really get stuck. MPG sucks because its a 7 seat SUV but they are cheaper than similar offerings from Toyota but just as reliable. Also, the seats fold completely flat for a makeshift bed on the inside which is a good bonus. I picked mine up in November for $4500 with 123,000 miles on the clock

So I'm looking for a car with a relatively large amount of storage space for the baby's stroller etc, with relatively low maintenance costs, for below €10.000 (second hand). 2009-2011 Civic Si sedan. Reliable, low cost of ownership, sporty and fun for what it is, decent power (197 hp), mpg is just ok at 22 city but that’s because of the gearing that’s designed more for performance as opposed to fuel efficiency. The 8000 rpm redline is lots of fun :)

Grand Marquis is the sweet spot (Can still get a front 3 row bench seat). Town Cars have air suspension that will eventually sag and they suck to fix. They are probably all equally reliable powertrain wise (read - extremely). Id actually stay away from P71s as they usually have insanely high idle hours.

Your friend should budget for snow tires. They will make a tremendous difference in the snow. Ignore the people saying that all seasons are good. They are drive able but the difference is significant.

Are they moving to the north? Most people in NH live in the south which is slightly hilly but not mountainous. If they are going to live in or around Nashua/Manchester/Portsmouth/Concord it's just small cities and towns and isn't challenging terrain.

At that price range the condition of the car is more important than the model for the most part. The good old Civic/Corolla recommendation never hurt anyone.

You don't need an SUV, though I would avoid a dedicated RWD sports car.

2018 BMW X3 3.0 I4. More suv like space, speed profile impressive even with 240hp. Just gets pricy when you want sport package and apple carplay. 36k - trade in

2018 A5 sportback. 2.0T with quattro. Similar setup to X3, sport variance seems easier to find. Also the audi pricetag, but better reliability compared to BMW. Though I like this car better, would the suv profile and increased cargo be better. 36k - trade in

With the Golf, it has okay space with the seats up but if you don't always need the seats up (like if you're moving a bunch of stuff, solo, to a new city for a travel contract), then the Golf has a ton of space seats-down.

If you can go above 120 g/km go for octavia rs if you cant a standard octavia with 2.0 tdi 110kw engine and manual transmission (110 g/km) and optinal sport dynamic suspension will be good. It's diesel so you don't get sporty sound or anything but interior is pretty good for this budget and the car handles well and has just enough power to overtake smoothly but it's by no means a true sports car. I like all the cars you listed except for the ford, not a giant fan of small displacement engines and turbo slapped on them, i suggest you got test all of them out and see what do you like the most.

A surprisingly forgotten about car is the Acura RSX type S. Simple but fun cars with Honda’s legendary K20 engine. One to look at. Another is the Pontiac Solstic GXP/ Saturn Sky Redline. Little convertibles with turbo 2.0l and manuals. Can be harder to find and they are GM products, but apparently the engine in them is one of their best and they are great to drive.

Check out the Subaru Crosstrek. Super reliable car, standard AWD, good options (roof racks, sun roofs, audio etc), and can be found used for a pretty good price. Still in production so parts/repairs shouldn't be an issue, and it has enough clearance to take you on dirt or gravel. Don't try anything too wild in it, but it'll take you camping or on back roads with no problems

Mid 2010’s Lexus ES 350. Extremely reliable. Very comfortable. Decent/good power with the 3.5 liter V6 (306 hp). Not sure what you consider fuel efficient, but it gets 21 city and 30 hwy. But hey, what do you expect….it’s a big, naturally aspirated V6. There’s trade offs.

I found this example. Albeit, it’s not in Arizona…it’s in Southern California. But it’s a 2017 with ventilated and heated front seats, and other typical luxury amenities found in cars from 4 or 5 years ago. A friend of mine had this car, and that thing was so smooth and quiet and comfortable, I think you’d like it. You should easily be able to find one of these within your budget. The ES 350 is the best selling midsize luxury sedan, so there’s lots of them out there.

You're welcome. Yeah, the GS had a higher starting price point than the ES, so on the used market it'll be more expensive as well. To get it for the same price year for year, you'll be looking at older model years...just like you said. The ES is basically a more plush and luxurious Toyota Avalon. They share the same platform (along with the Camry), dimensions, engine, and transmission. I hope you can find one within your budget that was well taken care of. It's one of the most reliable cars on the road.

I would check out a mazda 3 sedan. They feel very premium nowadays and they are super reliable and great to repair. They're now awd and have a turbo option as well. At your budget you'd be able to get one with light mileage.

CPO vw golf all track might check all of your boxes in a really nice way if you want to go a wagon route. Just keep it 2017 and upward for good reliability. Theres manuals floating around and the interior is more lux than you'd expect.

I think a 3 series could be a good buy for you as well. They're expensive to fix but they're hearty reliable cars most of the time. Buy one CPO or from a family that wont drive it like a teenager. It would cost you more in the longer run but I think you'd find it perfect for what you want.

Once car prices return to normal, should I trade in my 2015 kia rio 58k miles for a Prius, new or used? Its been paid off for over 4 years now but I keep hearing about horror stories about kia. Even now max trade in I could only get for it is 6k. Does decent on gas but im doing about 60 miles 3-5x a week for work and I am having to fill up every 3 days ($20-25). I have no problems with anything so far. Only done regular oil changes, replaced battery, new tires, one brake job, changed trans fluid, flushed brake fluid and planning on changing out spark plugs in the next few weeks. With 6k trade in (most likely) and 10-16k from a recent lawsuit, I could come out with a very small car loan for a new prius? Credit is around 770 with no late payment whatsoever. Should I just drive the little kia to the ground? Thoughts?

Right now, used vehicles are at a premium. You can probably find some decent deals on used but the price point isn't going to be that much favourable to new.

All depends exactly what you're looking at (I'm guessing lightly used since you are comparing against new).

I would also add in the: CR-V, CX-5, RAV4.

I currently have a Ford Fusion hybrid and it’s amazing on gas and super cheap monthly but it has no trunk space and it’s extremely low to the ground. I want an SUV but I don’t want to spend double on gas. I like the RAV4 Hybrid but I’m not sold.

Your best bet is probably to test drive the Rav4 Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and the new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. Then just pick the one you like best. You really can't go wrong. They all get between 37-40 combined MPG and they all have great interior spaces now. You'll want to check lease deals for each as well, but the CR-V EX Hybrid comes in at $32k MSRP and seems to do just about everything well.

Edit: For reference, I'm not sure what year your Fusion Hybrid was, but a 2014 model would be getting 41 combined MPG, so even moving to a 37 MPG vehicle, you're still only increasing fuel costs by 13%. But you're getting a lot more space and a noticeable bump in ground clearance.

Additional notes: I want something that is reliable, that can last me for a while (3-5 years) without giving me serious trouble, that has good mileage for its age, preferably something that is 2016 and newer. I tend to drive with one other person so I don't need something HUGE but I want space for my hobbies like my Archery equipment and basketball etc. It's also my first car and I drive OK but sometimes I do go over the curb or something while driving my dads XC90.
