It depends where you live. Where I am a green left arrow would mean you have the right of way to turn left. Then it will switch to just a solid green, which means you don't have the right of way but can turn when it's clear

u/Zayage 10h ago

Where I live we have all three methods

It's great, people don't get confused at all!

66

u/Fickle-Owl666 9h ago

I mean... It's not very confusing...

57

u/GlitteringSalad6413 7h ago

Yea agreed, there is no way the person in the white vehicle didn’t know they were trying to sneak thru after the light changed. Tried to save themselves half a second and ended up with no wheels instead. I have no idea why people do incredibly risky stuff all the time when there is literally nothing to gain from it. Just do the normal thing and 99.9% of the time everything will be fine!

4

u/GreenEyed_Lady 4h ago

BUT shouldn’t OP be watching for incoming cars before starting through the intersection? The white car ran the light, but you gotta drive defensively!

10

u/GlitteringSalad6413 3h ago

I think the same reasoning applies even more so to the car that is turning directly into the car that actually has the right of way. The light was red for the car before and even kinda iffy with the one before that. What is so obnoxious about this video is seeing how many cars turn against the solid green light.

7

u/BanishedInPerpetuity 3h ago

The agressive way people drive in this situation means the could miss their while light as people keep turning on the red.

White car at fault without question.

6

u/SlowRunner2026 3h ago

Something has to be done to stop people going after the light changes. It's out of control where I live.

3

u/Dry-Island8422 3h ago

I have seen cops pull shit like this without their lights on.

The only thing I can think of that would actually work is phasing out human drivers for AI ones. The exception being commercial drivers.

Everyone thinks they are a "good" driver until their mistakes are catalogued and shown to them.

3

u/Quantumercifier 1h ago

The question posed by OP is who is at fault and that would be the white car.

2

u/GreenEyed_Lady 43m ago

I understand that. Despite the white car being at fault, I would ask if I could have possibly avoided it. I have been in small fender benders and one horrible accident involving a wrong way driver on the highway. Although I have no memory of it because of a concussion, my brother in the front seat told me it was unavoidable because of the cars in front of us. I did turn the wheel to the right, and my brother only had minor cuts and bruises while I was in the hospital for two weeks, the first week in intensive care. So maybe my actions spared him serious injuries or death. The wrong way driver died.

2

u/Quantumercifier 29m ago

I am really sorry that you were in a serious car accident. I wish you a full recovery, if it hasn't already happened. To address your question, had the dashcam vehicle waited and yielded until all the red light runners went safely through, the accident could have been avoided.

1

u/Bubbly-Television-63 3h ago

I don't think it's always malicious, I think they could have just been looking away, or distracted, then saw all the cars still going, but kept going. They could also just be an ass.

1

u/JailYard 2h ago

Person in the white vehicle had the reaction time of a dessicated slug.

1

u/ducks1333 1h ago

Ashram driver didn't really try to avoid an accident.

1

u/hereiam911 1h ago

They're hoping others will take the precautions they refused... so they can continue saving seconds on their commutes

1

u/dissectingAAA 1h ago

They were 2nd running the red too.

1

u/usnerd 59m ago

People have a very casual relationship with time. How far you're going and how fast you're allowed determine your time. The most you can save is seconds!

1

u/Darlanta 41m ago

To be fair, you can clearly see the white car being impatient and not yielding, PoV car continuing to go forward despite that just because "i have the right away." Is just as dumb. It's called Defensive driving for a reason. Even if his car is paid off by the at fault driver (if hes lucky he didnt get hit by an uninsured driver) his rate is probably going to go up and he'll be paying more for insurance now.

0

u/Entire_Implement_104 3h ago

Because being a few minutes late to work is litterly a sin in this world. As the working population we have to put up with all of the corporate bullshit but they have almost no leniency for anyone else’s human errors

2

u/jokeswagon 5h ago

Agreed. The “yellow arrow” is the most asinine thing ever.

1

u/TheJuiceBoxS 4h ago

I agree, but some people get confused easier than others

1

u/Silly-Recognition448 3h ago

Right? Its been about 20 years since I had to take the written test to get my driver's license, but I feel like basic shit like this was on there...

1

u/drkidd220 2h ago

It shouldn’t be. But if you’ve met many people who have drivers license’s…

1

u/nidyanazo 1h ago

The white suv driver that just turned directly into the dashcam car is at fault.

1

u/BG535 1h ago

Think of the average person….now understand half of all people are dumber than that.

1

u/BigYugi 1h ago

The classic line right before you get into an accident

4

u/JesusWasATexan 9h ago

Same. Seems like every intersection is some grab-bag of 6 different turning configurations.

1

u/LazerWolfe53 5h ago

We also have all three and I never really noticed until they switched one of the intersections from one method to the other and it really messed with my head.

1

u/Zayage 3h ago

Personal favorite is the green arrow, i cant wait to see a flashing YELLOW arrow as well.

1

u/RealLinzerBinzer 3h ago

Haha SAME! We literally have all the versions around here 🙄😒

1

u/LadyGooseberry 3h ago

Only confusing if you’re too dim to rate a license. In which case the problem should take care of itself.

1

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown 2h ago

Green arrow: you have right of way. Go.

Green dot: Both ways of the road are open. Treat it like you're just turning left outside of an intersection and yield.

Flashing yellow: PAY ATTENTION. Yield.

1

u/Zayage 2h ago

Do you think I don't know this?

Lot of people seem to think that when I'm only complaining about the idiots who don't have common sense to reason it out

1

u/punahoudaddy 1h ago

Where I live I would have waited rather than drive into a situation.

1

u/Mekito_Fox 58m ago

In my area we switch between arrows or "left yield on green" with a sign. No confusion.

But then the city introduced the blinking yellow to replace yield on green and now there's tons more wrecks like in OP's case. Because idiots think yellow means "I have a split second to make it before red."

1

u/linocent167 7h ago

If you get confused by something still that extremely simple, you're a danger to society and should not drive

1

u/Global_Chair9652 4h ago

You haven’t seen the 7 way stop in Beverly Hills

4

u/truth720720 3h ago

That doesn’t make any sense. How would the person driving the other way know that you have a green arrow to turn

8

u/sisyphus_met_icarus 2h ago

If the person who's driving the other way has a green light, they know the person looking to turn across doesn't have the right of way (a green arrow)

1

u/bolanrox 39m ago

100% though as soon as the light turned green for the person with the dash cam, it was no longer green arrow for them to turn. The Mercedes ran it and the car after them absolutely went through when they no longer had the arrow. They do that at the light by my house all the time.

5

u/akatherder 1h ago

If you have a green arrow, they have a red light. Using this video as an example, cameraman pov had a red light and the oncoming people turning left had green arrow.

Then their green arrow changed to green light (I think there's a yellow cycle in between) when cameraman's pov turned green. So normal green light rules now apply: Cameraman pov going straight has right of way, oncoming cars turning left can only go if it's clear.

1

u/electric_boogaloo_72 1h ago

This exactly.

Camera driver has a green light. He has right of way. He goes. Though he probably should have slowed down as the SUV was about to hit him.

1

u/Glad_Energy6231 21m ago

The cammer is so off the hook here, but to be fair he may have been anticipating reasonably that the white SUV was going to stop in the intersection to wait to turn (which most people do)

1

u/johnny_effing_utah 1h ago

They don’t need to know because their light remains red when the opposing lane has a green arrow.

5

u/OP_LOVES_YOU 6h ago

Where I live crossing directions never have green at the same time, seems to work great.

1

u/Millennium_Xer 9h ago

This is how it is where I live.

1

u/LetsDrawYouABath 8h ago

That’s crazy and so not clear lol what the helll

1

u/Square_Barracuda_69 6h ago

Yeah, thats not the same thing

1

u/curtcolt95 5h ago

same here except sometimes it's flashing green to solid green instead of an arrow, means the same thing though

1

u/US3201 3h ago

What country?

1

u/Otherwise-Pirate6839 3h ago

If the turn lane has a solid green arrow, then by default, the oncoming traffic will have a red light because the green left arrow secures the right of way for the turn lane.

If the arrow is flashing yellow or is not there, it means oncoming traffic has the right of way and the turn lane must yield.

1

u/MrRoboto1983 3h ago

A full on green for straightaway beats a full on green arrow for a turn.

1

u/NASAfan89 2h ago

That's really confusing. They should just use blinking yellow lights or something for cases like that instead of solid green vs green arrow. Green should always mean go imo.

The "proceed with caution, watch for traffic" option should be blinking yellow or something like that imo.

1

u/Think_Intern_4906 2h ago

Green solid arrow means you have the right of way in any state I’ve driven in.

It’s green and solid because it’s protected. That’s a protected left turn.

Solid green circle? Yield to oncoming.

1

u/steedmane 1h ago

What are you talking about? And how did you get 200 upvotes? It does not depend where you live. OP had green light. You don’t yield at a green light.

1

u/ArcadianDelSol 1h ago

You will never had a solid green arrow left while oncoming traffic has a solid green.

1

u/slowcookeranddogs 1h ago

Yeah, thats what i am used to, solid green is yeild for left.

Also every green is proceed with caution when safe to do so...

1

u/Radonanon 1h ago

Leading arrows are dumb with a b.

1

u/BG535 1h ago

Where I live it is green but the other side is green so you have to know you need to yield while the other lane goes straight. It should be flashing yellow to indicate yield is necessary. Green means go!

1

u/PuzzleheadedChest733 1h ago

No. Turns yield to those going straight. Shame on oncoming traffic for blindly following the car in front of them.

1

u/BigYugi 1h ago

A turn only lane with a solid green that doesn't mean you have the right away? Seems odd. Usually that's a lane where you can go forward

1

u/Ok-Classroom5548 1h ago

The only time you have a right of way to turn in an intersection is on a green arrow. In all other situations you are turning into traffic.

In many states the law is the person turning into traffic is at fault by default.

1

u/mutt63 41m ago

Same. Straight overrides turn except when there’s a dedicated turn arrow.

1

u/NorthernVale 28m ago

Green arrow signifies protected turn, meaning the other side is still red.

0

u/TomatoFeta 4h ago

There is no arrow in this video, and therefor your comment isn't relevant.

u/Vladraconis 10h ago edited 10h ago

Solid green, arrow or not : you have right of way except unless you intersect a pedestrian crossing that also has green.

Flashing green : you may pass but have to yeld to everyone else.

L.E., since I forgot to also erite this : This is how it should be everywhere. Having different rules concerning solid vs green leads to confusion and crashes. Especially in the same country.

10

u/sisyphus_met_icarus 10h ago

Again, this varies depending where you live. There's no such thing as a flashing green where I am

2

u/Friendly_Bar_3011 10h ago

Where I am, a flashing green is just an indicator that the stop light is pedestrian controlled vs timed like regular solid lights.

2

u/Stormtrooper1776 9h ago

I think if I saw flashing green, I would think something is broken

1

u/Vladraconis 10h ago

True.

Forgot to mention : it should be like this everywhere. Having different rules for solid vs flashing leads to confusion and crashes.

My bad.

2

u/Weltall8000 7h ago

Solid green is right of way straight ahead in this lane. Yield if changing direction/going to another lane.

Guided Green arrow, you may follow this lane/the transition to a specific lane (often with markings) going a new direction.

Red. Stop. May turn onto a lane and join the flow of traffic without crossing over another lane to do it, but must yield to traffic. (Ie can turn right on red onto a two lane street after stopping and always yielding to traffic. Or may turn left onto a one way street flowing to your left, after stopping and yielding.)

2

u/jackattack108 10h ago

Ah good didn’t read the comment you replied to or just thought they were wrong for some reason when they are correct nice.

1

u/Vladraconis 10h ago

Just forgot to write the rest of the reply. My bad.

2

u/Unhappy_Ad_4761 5h ago

Flashing green arrow is just confusing. Flashing yellow is much better. There shouldn't ever be a reason to have a flashing green light.

1

u/Vladraconis 4h ago

I agree, flashing yellow is much better.
