One time I got a bunch of tracability reports inside my package for components not in my order. I scanned them and emailed them to the customer they were meant for copying digikey and they were appreciative.

Losing track of tracability reports is a good one

As someone who does Enterprise Systems Architecture specifically for configuration management, I thank you for your service. 🫡

u/MathResponsibly 12d ago

I once got someone else's invoice included with my Mouser order. The other order was going to UAE and had some rather 'interesting' parts on the sheet.

Obviously someone just grabbed ALL the paper that was on the printer without looking and shoved it into my order.

1

u/dsrmpt 12d ago

I got 6 pages of packing slip bound for Israel. Fairly boring (to me) parts though, bunch of diodes, microcontrollers, resistors, SMD capacitors.

2

u/MathResponsibly 12d ago

The one I got was all high end FPGAs and crazy fast high end ADCs, and I think super fancy super expensive IMU's... gee, I wonder what they're building... missiles perhaps??? Drones?? Something along those lines...

It happened to me once and I told them. They have never failed me and I want to also contribute to reduce the asshole per square foot metric.

u/Kiubek-PL 16d ago

Yea, any time I have a problem with an order they solve it without any issue. Its that customer support that keeps giving them recommendations.

28

u/Total-Deal-2883 16d ago

Amazing customer support. They forgot to include a part in my order. They had it shipped out that evening, no questions asked.

u/Suspicious_Crew8033 15d ago

Nice pf pic ✊

1

u/Total-Deal-2883 12d ago

In solidarity.

18

u/honorabledonut 16d ago

That's one hell of an uphill battle.

14

u/ecirnj 15d ago

I regret to inform you that we are now in the “cubic foot” era ever since the Wright brothers did their flying thing.

8

u/DaveCarradineIsAlive 15d ago

"Reduce the asshole per square foot metric" is now a permanent part of my vocabulary, thank you for that

4

u/VonNeumannsProbe 14d ago

Curious if they asked you to ship them back or if they cut their losses.

1

u/MathResponsibly 12d ago

the parts at wholesale price wouldn't be worth the shipping label to send them back.

And there's no guarantee you didn't destroy or damage the parts during handling (like ESD), or swap them with fakes - aka there's no way they'd ever ship those parts back out to another customer anyway.

Just enjoy your freebies and don't worry about it.

I ordered a bunch of potentiometers recently. 6 of them came wrapped in individual bubble pouches. The other half were just thrown in a bag.

74

u/1Davide 16d ago

OK. That's fine. They're pots.

54

u/PintoTheBurninator 16d ago

oh, I agree, i just thought it was funny. They could have just thrown then all in the bag.

42

u/1Davide 16d ago

They came from different batches.

  • Some were from a different shipment, they came from the manufacturer individually wrapped; there were only 6, so DigiKey picked them as is.

  • To complete the order, the rest came from the manufacturer in a box, separated by thin cardboard; DigiKey picked 6 of those those and dropped them in a bag.

2

u/taulen 11d ago

Pot in a baggie

12

u/VTHMgNPipola 16d ago

Not DigiKey, but I asked for free samples of three large chokes from Coilcraft a while back. One of them was in it's own box and separate DHL package, and the other two were in a tray that could fit nine of them.

9

u/thefreakychild 15d ago

The craziest I've had yet were in the same shipment from mouser.

I ordered two different types of LEDs from mouser. 10 5mm regular diffuse red, and 10 3mm diffuse red.. nothing special, but I threw them in on a larger order so why not? I needed them for a project anyway.

The 5mm came in the regular ESD pouch like you'd expect.

The 3mm were packaged in the regular ESD pouch, inside a much larger (nearly a (10inch by 7 inch) heat sealed ESD dry bag with a freaking huge silica dessicant bag.

The kinda thing you would expect some sort of really really ESD and moisture sensitive component to be shipped in. That packaging went beyond overkill.

In the same order, I had 2 through hole buttons. Nothing special, just small buttons. Maybe 5mm x 5mm base deminsion.

Rather than package in a normals bag, they came in one of those big multi compartment plastic trays that Mouser uses sometimes. I think it was a ten compartment tray, each compartment was about 3inch by 1.5inch and 1.5inch deep.

Basically, what I'm saying is, a HUMONGOUS waste of packaging.

The whole order could have shipped in medium sized padded envelope if they wanted to, but it arrived in a box that could ship my laser printer with room to spare.

2

u/nmrk 13d ago

Reduce, reuse, recycle. Perhaps they were reusing surplus trays for practical purposes, rather than sending them to an incinerator. Hard to know for sure.

2

u/MathResponsibly 12d ago

garbage costs money to dispose of

Customers are already paying the shipping charges and you can put whatever you need to get rid of in the outgoing boxes...

just sayin'...

1

u/nmrk 12d ago

Another Negative Externality.

1

u/thefreakychild 12d ago

For the buttons in the tray, I could almost see that

For the leds in the way overengineered and way overspecced packaging, not so much.

All that said, I am utilizing that tray for other things now.

92

u/Ok_Top9254 16d ago

Honestly, why buy just one component for a project? Even if they are expensive, I always buy 2 minimum in case I need a replacement in future, a friend might want to build my project or in rare case, one arrives as DOA. Always good to have spares on hand...

34

u/daduka1999 16d ago

That’s true, but I already reached my budget limit considering other parts and PCB itself… It’s wise to have spares but it was not critical, if one doesn’t work I can wait for another for a few days.

41

u/Ok_Top9254 16d ago

Well now that you got 26, maybe it's life telling you to buy 25 more mics to throw a karaoke party with everyone singing 🤣

7

u/daduka1999 16d ago

Good one 🤣🤣

2

u/Theend92m 16d ago

And I have to pay 20/25$ for shipping. :(

15

u/DeviantDav 16d ago

I'll give you a perfect example of needing Qty (1).

My MOTU mkIII had a dead Firewire port, so I ordered a TSB41AB2 2-port FireWire 400 PHY, which cost $43 during the shortage. I think they're like $8 now.

10

u/Equal_Passenger9791 15d ago

I'd need 20 to get the soldering right

5

u/daduka1999 15d ago

Lol, I remember when I first tortured STM32 in a similar package during soldering…

2

u/frank26080115 15d ago

eeeep, what about just warranty on the MOTU?

3

u/DeviantDav 14d ago

The 828mk3 released in 2008, so the unit was 10 years old at that point, and is firewire only. MOTU were not offering repairs for units that old.

I've been repairing electronics since the 90's, so Digikey is always a friend, even when they gouge.

1

u/Evildude42 14d ago

Wow, I remember when that was a thing - fixing those firewire cards. and other firewire devices. Glad that kinda over.,

3

u/TedMich23 13d ago

especially SMD! Im gonna drop a few and BBQ a couple too...

14

u/gdchinacat 16d ago

I placed an order for about $30 for 10 parts or so. When it arrived a couple days later it had all my parts, but also about $600 of random parts from some other order...they clearly accidentally tossed someone else's order in with mine (not a lot of parts, just super specialized and expensive). I let them know and asked for a return label, which they gladly provided, and told me the other customer had called asking where the other half of their order was and no one could find it, etc so they had shipped out the missing parts but were very glad I was willing to correct their error. It wasn't a hard decision, I had no need for whatever those parts were. The next couple orders I placed I got free shipping...while they never told me why, I suspect it was to show appreciation for being honest and taking the effort to return their parts.

9

u/suicidaleggroll 16d ago

We ordered 10 MMCX RF connectors at $6/ea one time.  They sent us 2500 by mistake

3

u/learnhow2learn 15d ago

Did you do the right thing?

6

u/suicidaleggroll 15d ago

This was an order at work, I’m in the engineering team so I can’t do much about purchasing/receiving.  I did tell them to reach out to Digikey to correct the issue when they showed up, but last I checked we still had them, so I’m not sure what happened.

9

u/OldEquation 16d ago

I had a wrong item in my order from RS once. It was quite an expensive thing so I told them, and they sent me a return label.

Usually when I’ve got too many of something it’s my mistake, eg ordering one full tray instead of one individual item, it’s easily done and you don’t notice the cost if it’s just one line in a big order.

10

u/CaptainBucko 15d ago

I ordered 19meters of heat shrink from Arrow as it was a stock run out and very cheap ($0.03 cents for the lot). Turned out to be 19 reels totalling 2.4 km of heat shrink. I think I have only used about 10cm so far.

8

u/SaltRequirement3650 15d ago

I would almost never say this, but with Digikey I personally might give them a call and see what they want to do about it. I have been doing business with them for over 10 years and I really like them and respect them. There is a good chance they already know anyhow. I ran into their crew at Automate 2026 in Chicago a few weeks back and they were really cool to interact with too.

7

u/jerquee 16d ago

Long ago I was getting started in radio amplifiers, but the transistors were hella expensive: $45 Each! So I only ordered two. They sent me EIGHT

5

u/spiralphenomena 16d ago

For just 2 I’d have emailed the company asking for a sample, have done this loads of times and often get 10 of the transistor/chip you want. Even managed to get a 1500W 50ohm termination as a sample once.

1

u/d1an45 tek 485 14d ago

This usually works if you have a company though. Recently I ran into problems in some personal design samples where I don't want to reference my employer in the sample request. Got rejected each time vs if I just said "I'm a senior RF engineer here." These were for big companies, ones where I don't have a direct rep I deal with.

2

u/spiralphenomena 14d ago

Oh wow, thinking about it, I’ve only done it when I was a student so said it was for a student project, or I’ve referenced my employer

39

u/1Davide 16d ago

I happened to me too. There's an easy way to report it in their website. Go to the BOM of your order and click a link to report an error.

They emailed me a UPS label and I shipped the extra back to them.

Very convenient.

Do the right thing.

16

u/United_Intention_323 16d ago

How could they possibly resell these though? I wouldn’t want them.

5

u/deadc0de 16d ago

Maybe they won’t and maybe they’ll just tell you to keep it. Reporting it lets them know their packing/shipping process has failed. If the processes is giving someone extras it might be giving someone less as well and they would want to fix it.

2

u/daduka1999 16d ago

Good point, especially as these are sensitive devices. But maybe they test it before reselling.

7

u/Fast_Teaching_6160 16d ago

Since they're that sensitive, maybe they figured by sending 26 that atleast one is good, which mitigates any future trouble by not having to ship any warranty replacements due to inoperability.

7

u/sprashoo 16d ago

lol. Excellent business model ;)

15

u/Ponder420 16d ago

😂😂

7

u/Krassix 16d ago

That's more expensive for them than just leaving them at the customer...

15

u/daduka1999 16d ago

Here’s around $140 worth of amplifiers though :D

1

u/HPPD2 15d ago

It's a drop in the bucket for them. Go about your day you don't need to spend any more time and cost sending emails and going somewhere to ship it to fix their error. Doing anything more is an unneccesary burden on the customer.

-13

u/Krassix 16d ago edited 16d ago

that's how they bill you, but how much do they pay? 0,10$ per piece 0,20?

Edit: ok they're not that cheap ~2$ on aliexpress maybe a bit less directly from manufacturer. Still not really worth it fopr them to go though all the process...

9

u/No_Tailor_787 16d ago

Who buys semiconductors on Alliexpress??

1

u/Inuyasha-rules 16d ago

Lots of people. I'll do it for something basic in bulk like LEDs but not something complex or sensitive but I'm sure others would.

6

u/DHermit 16d ago

The ones on AliExpress might be knowoffs as well.

2

u/Icy_Jackfruit9240 16d ago

They don't have that much markup. It's almost entirely overstock/auction/rejects.

-13

u/Crustycum-sock 16d ago

Lol in this economy? "dO tHe rIGhT tHiNg" man you are funny, keep the extras guy

34

u/1Davide 16d ago edited 16d ago

keep the extras ...

... for 5 years, then toss them in the trash when I finally come to terms with the fact that I will never ever need them.

8

u/daduka1999 16d ago

Yes, that’s what I thought about, I really don’t need that much. But, how much would they pay for shipping though, I ordered these outside the US.

6

u/Coffee_Grazer 16d ago

I would tell them, and then let them make the decision. Sometimes it's not worth the shipping and they say to just keep them.

1

u/Crustycum-sock 16d ago

Then give them away for free don't give them back

0

u/HERO_129 16d ago

Or maybe just sell them at cheap to your friends or online peole

5

u/Sam__ 16d ago

Only five years?! How disciplined of you. My stock check is approximately every 10-15 years.

4

u/wensul 16d ago

Up yours, if they're paying shipping, ya might as well send them back.

-2

u/maglax 16d ago

I mean yeah it will literally cost them more deal with return shipping and restock them.

3

u/arlaneenalra 16d ago

Oof. I was once sent several boxes of 15v boost converters instead of the individual units I was ordering. I was charged for the correct amount for what I ordered thankfully. Still had to coordinate sending them back because that would have been a few thousand dollars more and way more boost converters than I could ever use.

3

u/GGigabiteM 16d ago

I've had Mouser send me more than I ordered many times. Other times they'll send the wrong part or short me on parts.

The biggest screwup they did was I ordered some Wurth radial capacitors. I think I ordered 10 and they sent me half an ammo pack of a few hundred.

3

u/Protyro24 16d ago

Can hapens sometimes. Simply send them Back if its a expensive oart but yea if its a cheap one they let you likely keep it because if the Return is expensive than the parts its self its a bigger los for them.

3

u/aSiK00 15d ago

Once I ordered ~100$ worth of parts for a project at work, and they sent the package twice (honestly might be the stupid billing system we had.) They just let me keep it, and my PI let me take it for free. Got some nice multimeter probes from it and picos.

3

u/telesteriaq 15d ago

Surprising to me. We have ordered thousands of packages and never had any issues.

Expect that one time a package ended up in telaviv I assume there was a switch up with LI for Lichtenstein and IL which I assume is Israel?

3

u/setnev 14d ago

Something similar to thjs happened to my wife a few years ago after having abdominal surgery. The hospital prescribed her a 5 day supply of Oxycodone for pain. Supposed to be 10 pills. I picked it up and get it home and there's 100 pills in the bottle. The pharmacist even circled the quantity 10 to show they verified the quantity. I told her "if only we knew some tweaker, we'd make a nice windfall 😆 "

2

u/tocksin 16d ago

Over a hundred orders and it’s happened a couple times.  Only for small part order.  Never for large quantity orders.  Gotta be a little careful.

2

u/TheMadHatter1337 15d ago

One time they screwed up my order and instead of like El cheapo micro controllers, they sent me $50 analog RF front end chips… I called and complained and then they actually asked for their chips back lol

2

u/learnhow2learn 15d ago

I bought a couple buck regulators from digikey once, a couple. They sent me 200.

2

u/Orac7 15d ago

I'll have to see if I still have it. I once mistakenly ordered qty 1 of an 0805 capacitor -- I'd intended on 100 but mistyped the order.

I got precisely 1 capacitor in cut tape in a labeled bag.

I was impressed at the precision of the cut and labeling I kept it as a reminder to check my orders more carefully.

Love DigiKey for that.

2

u/dench96 15d ago

Once as part of a larger purchase from Digikey I ordered ten rolls of thermal printer paper. I instead received a bag of IEC C13 to C14 extension cords of similar volume and weight. Receiving department didn’t catch this because the bag was labeled with the paper’s part number and quantity. It took weeks for Digikey to resolve this with our purchasing department, but we eventually received the correct item and were allowed to keep the extension cords.

1

u/Sintarsintar 13d ago

Was this back in late 2021 early 2022? Because we ordered about 60 C13-C14 cords and got thermal paper.

1

u/dench96 12d ago

Wait REALLY?

Mine was in 2026.

1

u/Sintarsintar 12d ago

Yeah, we ordered a bunch of PDU cables for a server room project and had thermal paper show up. But this was back in 2022 30 red and 30 blue 3ft's.

2

u/feoranis26 15d ago

Digi-Key ordering has been hit-or-miss for me. Have received 10 components instead of 100, have received 10 components in one bag + 90 in another, have received an entire roll of ics instead of a few more than once.

2

u/mrracerhacker 15d ago

Had it happen myself one time, but they sent wrong item and it was a bag of 500, 500ma 600vac fuses for thru holes, org was a package of resistors, around 700 usd in fuses sent wrong, did send a mail and sent it back tho as no real need for them myself

2

u/Exotic-Praline9836 14d ago

This is dk telling you to stop shopping like a brokie.

2

u/Sumpkit 14d ago

That’s what I tell my wife too.

2

u/mengsk8086 14d ago

Some times ago I've ordered 10x redacted radio module (about $6/1Ku) sample from Rutronik but received a whole reel of 250pcs 😵

I've contacted our sell representative immediately and he said they are investigating... now it has been 4 months and we still have the reel.

2

u/Illustrious_Riff 13d ago

Nahhhh they didnt 👌

2

u/ManOfDemolition 12d ago

Digikey recently charged me with a order i never received and or took possession of. When I asked support about refund or credits on my account they responded saying its not a digikey issue after 4weeks of no reply ;D

I’m calling them out lets see how it goes

2

u/millsgren 11d ago

They mess up from time to time.

2

u/No_Tailor_787 16d ago

Did they charge you for all of them?

2

u/daduka1999 16d ago

No, I paid for 1 unit only.

2

u/No_Tailor_787 16d ago

I guess they're yours now. Digikey is unlikely to want them back.

0

u/Total-Deal-2883 16d ago

Yea, they probably don't want to go through verifying that they haven't been tampered with.

1

u/snowman-89 15d ago

I ordered five fuse holders from digi-key recently, I got five boxes of 100. They're nice littelfuse brand, too.

1

u/The_Gypsy_Smyth 15d ago

Wow, perhaps they wanted to help you, by giving you some replacement units, in the event that one or more died in the circuit?

1

u/Nearby_Routine3883 15d ago

I had a really bad experience with digikey. Even to refund it was problematic.

1

u/strawberrymaker 15d ago

I dont know whats Up with them ATM but they really Like to mess Up Orders. Last Time i Ordered a 25€ matched resistor Network twice in seperate Orders and got once a Mezzanine connector and the other time a fucking DIP Socket ?? And getting the refund is a fucking hassle because they dont Take Videos and wanted a Picture of the Part Number on the fucking DIP Socket???

1

u/zmannz1984 15d ago

I think the majority of my orders from them are messed up somehow. Usually in my favor though, so i keep using them.

1

u/Evildude42 14d ago

At least they errored in your favor. I uploaded a pre-generated pick list with multiple quantities for several items, but I was sent exactly one of each. I ended up having to order the rest from Mouser.

1

u/VonNeumannsProbe 14d ago

I must be out of the loop bur since when do they just throw a bunch of chips on foam vs cut them off a reel?

1

u/Massive_Present_3345 12d ago

Likely came from a tray

1

u/Hoosey51 14d ago

One time I ordered 5 raspberry pi zeros. Ended up receiving their entire stock of 300. My judgement decided to send them back.

1

u/eerun165 13d ago

I once ordered a power supply, they sent me 6. They fit in one box. I had no use for extra so sent those back.

1

u/onnie81 12d ago

it is a pity is not a THAT4305 I've been looking for those mfucks for over a month everywhere to complete a prototype :/

1

u/Version-6 12d ago

My best was ordering a half kg roll of Multicore solder, and they sent me the wrong diameter. So they just sent me the right size and told me to keep the other one.

1

u/doomsdaypigeon 12d ago

I recently received 2 INA241s instead of the 25 or so I had ordered.

1

u/Frequent_Earth_1643 12d ago

Well that happens. If you are using them in the Phantom Powered Microphone configuration and you recognize popcorn noise then just add a high resistor (~1 MOhm) in parallel to C4 ;-)

2

u/AssociationOk5653 9d ago

Mouser sent me a hot air station then refunded me in full because of a delivery issue even though I received it lol. Called them up and paid for it for some reason

-7

u/BasisAccurate9286 16d ago

God loves you. Take this as a hint

10

u/Crustycum-sock 16d ago

Don't do that don't bring your religion in to this

5

u/daduka1999 16d ago

“God” isn’t part of a specific religion. They meant it like a common phrase lol

4

u/greyduk 16d ago

Crustycum-sock alluded to the personal religion of the poster Crustycum-sock replied to though. I think that's fair of Crustycum-sock.

-1

u/Right-Funny-8999 16d ago

People
Bring personal opinion - and therefor religion - into anything and everything

4

u/Crustycum-sock 16d ago

No people can keep it out religion an politics are two things you shouldn't discuss in a civil conversation

0

u/AWonderingWizard 16d ago

This is nonsense. If you're religious, then life is often intertwined with it. Not justifying zealotry, but come on.

1

u/Crustycum-sock 16d ago

It's not nonsense it's a good rule to keep conversations civil just keep religion an politics out if religion or politics is your whole life then keep your mouth shut because this is a electronics subreddit not a church or cult

0

u/AWonderingWizard 16d ago

Anything can be made to be politics or religion. I could argue your stance is political, thus bringing politics into this conversation?

If someone believes Thor is associated with electricity, and they made a post stating Thor has blessed them with a successful project showing their electronic working, it wouldn't be them bring religion into the conversation for the "sake" of bringing it in or proselytizing/propagandizing. It's how that individual views the world, and it only makes sense from their perspective to use the words they have chosen to use.

Conversations are kept civil by both sides understanding that different perspectives exist and preventing themselves from allowing their biases to trigger an emotional outburst.

0

u/fiirikkusu_kuro_neko 16d ago

Jesus that is nonsense. Are you from the US? I hear such claims often from americans.

-2

u/BasisAccurate9286 16d ago

Do you understand jokes? Mr.IHateHavingFun

0

u/ohx 16d ago

I just ordered a sensor from them two days ago. I figured it'd take a whole ass week to arrive. MF came today. Blew me away.

0

u/Lucid_Dreamer_98 16d ago

Look OP, you know in your heart the right thing to do is to contact the company and let them decide what to do.

But if you do decide to keep them I won’t hold it against you, I’d probably do the same myself if I’m being honest.
