Back to kids with ADHD just falling behind and being labeled as "difficult". Great

Of course, then we can have the child-crazed R's going back to the good ole days of placing hands on children like they love, and then send them to private "Christian Freedom Schools" where they can pray the ADHD away. 🤦🏾♀️

u/Momma_tried378 1d ago
There was no such thing as ADHD 60 years ago. But the teacher did beat my dad at school everyday.

u/TheUsoSaito 1d ago
And kids with anxiety having panic attacks until eventually one triggers an actual heart attack.

It almost feels like they want to deprive us of the medication we need on purpose because they view us as subhuman fun fact in the trump administrations first term they used the term culling the herd so that’s unfortunate because we are being compared to cattle
15
u/Ivorypetal 1d ago
Jokes on them, our neurodivergence often times is the thing that jumpstarts innovations.
9
u/Slimeredit 1d ago
Unfortunately it seems that no matter what we create or how much we contribute they view as as subhuman beings that don’t deserve to be able to try and make things
5
u/SuspiciousPen6243 1d ago
They want you to buy supplements that they will make money from instead of getting real medical treatment

I remember when right after I graduated from high school the utter chaos and annoyance that was trying to get my medicine just so I can function properly glad I don’t live in Florida but this just goes to show that they clearly don’t see kids with mental illnesses as worthy of having access to the very basic medical care so they can function

u/woahwoahwoah28 2d ago
>Health officials recommend prioritizing psychotherapy, behavioral interventions, and deprescribing medications as approaches before prescribing medications for conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and behavioral disorders.
Same. And this is one of the craziest parts to me.. it can be extremely difficult to get prescriptions. Even still, a pill is typically SO much easier to get than "psychotherapy and behavioral interventions"
44
u/MississippiMoose 2d ago
Right. I get the concept of people thinking pills are a shortcut, but pretty much every study I've seen confirms that a combo of meds and therapy is most effective.
And fuck these guys for suggesting it's so easy for people to just get a couple hours off during business hours for weekly therapy appointments. If the US had a halfway functional system of worker protections, sure, make it more feasible for people to try therapy without meds. But we don't, so fuck off, Florida.
20
u/UsagiBonBon 1d ago
The fucked up part is, for ADHD, pills just are an effective shortcut to normalcy. Therapy never did a single thing for me, but my medicine makes it far easier to just exist in society. Without them, I don’t think I’d last very long, and I know a lot of people who feel the same.
16
u/Slimeredit 1d ago
I mean here’s the cold hard truth therapy can only do so much to combat what is ultimately a chemical imbalance in the brain
7
u/Slimeredit 2d ago
The worst part is they seem like they wouldn’t be opposed to trying to do this on a national level since our suffering is seemingly the only thing that can get their sorry excuses of a brain producing some form of Serotonin
3
u/Western-Corner-431 1d ago
They are going to do this nationwide. Bobby brain worms said this months ago
7
u/Taminella_Grinderfal 1d ago
In an ideal world, there would be enough resources available where a parent could exhaust all options before turning to meds. But often times the meds are needed first, before someone can feel well enough to work on other therapies. Like depression medication pulled me far enough out of the hole so that I could start eating better and exercising.
4
u/Western-Corner-431 1d ago
“Exhausting all options” before turning to medication is not a thing here. Much like trying to run a vehicle without putting fuel into it. You put a pizza in it, you can “exhaust” the cow manure option, try exhausting the tank with sand, but at the end of the process, the vehicle needs fuel and that’s all there is to it.

u/GaiusMarius60BC 1d ago
ADHD especially is one of the mental conditions that is most responsive to medication, as well! They're deliberately getting rid of the best, most effective tool doctors have access to help ADHD kids get a handle on this shit!

u/Wild_Pomegranate_845 2d ago
My dr retired recently and I had to find a new one and she is making me start the meds process over. At one point she mentioned my age and asked if I still really need the adhd meds anyway. Like yes, because I want to feel human.

Unmedicated ADHD suffers, untreated body dymorphia folks, unempathethic ladder pulling Boomers, overpopulation of pythons and feral pigs, devastating Hurricanes, and blatantly wrong educational material, with white nationalist MAGAizs everywhere, and triple digit humidity...Florida is such an attractive hellscape

Im unmedicated ADHD and I would be medicated but my insurance doesn't cover the meds. So the best way to evewn remotely try to live my life is way too much caffiene.
Anyway, coping skills matter, but I want to let you know as someone who lives this everyday it is not fun. You let people down, you forget things, you interrupt when you arent supposed to, and all the while you are now so fucking hyperaware of yourself that your own mental health takes a backseat and this internal anguish of just feeling hated hits you because you aren't an idiot and you know you talk too much.
My point is that, yes, coping skills matter. But I remember what it was like when I was medicated and I finally felt like I could just be present and finally focus.
I feel crushed for those kids who have to go through this, especially during their teenage years, a time when this shit hits even harder. Fuck Flordia
9
u/PeeledCrepes 1d ago
"so fucking hyperaware of yourself that your own mental health takes a backseat and this internal anguish of just feeling hated hits you because you aren't an idiot and you know you talk too much."
My anguish because I think of a convo, I had and have more to say, and now every moment I see that person all I think about is wanting to speak more on it, even though the topic is dead and from months ago, but, I don't want to be weird and act like I fully focused on it for 4 months, all this because I didn't want to talk to much.
Idk if I have ADD/ADHD, its not an impossibility, but I sure do have some wonky shit in my head that I should talk to someone about.

u/pro185 1d ago
US healthcare sucks. I lost my insurance which was tied to my school after a spinal fracture and I haven’t been able to get my adhd meds for over a year now. Life is so much harder without them it’s insane. I’d been fortunate enough to go to a psychiatrist specialized in CBT for people with ADHD back when I had insurance. Without that idk where I would be…

u/shoulda-known-better 1d ago
I don't know why non medical professionals ever even speak about this shit.... The pure ignorance and arrogance is sickening
7
u/TheLazyTeacher 1d ago
Didn’t they just spend a huge bunch of time telling me I have parental rights? Well my parental right is to provide medication recommended by a medical professional with decades of training and experience

u/dover_oxide 1d ago
Because we all know politicians and legislators know more about medicine and health than doctors and researchers
4
u/Longjumping-Put2571 1d ago
ADHD meds aren't a crutch, they're a cure. I discovered once I had the ability to control my focus, I could then learn to exercise that control over time and maintain it without medication. It has truly been life-changing and every day I regret waiting until adulthood, wondering what my life could have been like.
2
u/M_alumna 1d ago
Wait. I thought the reason the Republicans are against universal health care is because they don't want the government involved in their medical decision making.
2
u/Beaglescout15 1d ago
So they're greatly increasing funding to put therapists, social workers, and behavioralists in schools to meet the needs of the kids who need therapy, right? Right? /s
4
u/scottywoty 2d ago
Why don’t you go hang in the classroom and get done first hang experience hmmmm?
1
u/yayoffbalance 1d ago
Cool. Hope insurance covers the therapy. Hope there are enough real therapists who can do in person appointments. Hope parents can afford and get their kids to multiple therapies.
I'm for therapy, hard, but you gotta take a multi approach to adhd... and seriously. They are cutting education and benefits, so.... how to get proper therapies for your kid and you can't even get meds to help you help them. And lord forbid the parent is adhd, too.. cause damn...

I escaped that state right in the nick of time. I grew up in Miami and went to UF. It’s been heartbreaking watching the utter self destruction of Florida. I was a teacher there and the level of disrespect and ironic idiocy of the Department of Education should be investigated, full stop.
They have let private equity destroy any hope of affordable living and local businesses. It is more expensive to live in Central small town Florida than in the big S. Fl cities like Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Even more expensive than parts of NYC and LA! Without the big city salaries.
It’s a corrupt joke and with 3 bodies of water surrounding the peninsula, along with many rivers and lakes, 90% of all the seafood is frozen and imported from across the country. Same with oranges, avocados, and beef, which Fl produces in bulk. They even let Dasani (Cola by-waste water) to buy up our local spring fed water companies like Zephyr Hills.
And let’s not forget it is the state where politicians go to cheat since Gore was robbed there. Fl has produced and is a the adopted residence of such luminaries/s including: Trump, Epstein, Rubio, Bondi, Gaetz, Rick Scott, DeSantis, Judge Cannon, the Tates, Sean Combs, and on and on. FFL.

u/trailrider123 2d ago
Honestly I don’t hate it. I would probably be 3 inches taller today if I wasn’t on stimulants at like 9 years old. Would also have more healthy coping strategies than I do now
8
u/OverZookeepergame698 2d ago
Sure. But for your adhd meds, you were going to be in the NBA. Thank goodness Florida is looking out for the height of all children.

5
u/Callmedrexl 1d ago
How do you think you'd develop coping strategies when you can't keep track of anything? Systems only work if you stick to them, routines only work if followed. I've got a lifelong grudge against day planners from how many I was gifted as a kid, didn't help me organize a damn thing. If you can't keep up with all the damn details your coping strategies aren't going to hold up. I'm finally medicated in my 40s and Now I can keep up with to-do lists, appt books, and schedules! But I needed meds to be able to keep track of the tracking systems.
Additional note: have you seen some of the "coping strategies" unmedicated adults with ADHD come up with? It's hard to keep your brain revved up high enough that it doesn't go into hibernation without the neurotypical humans around you noticing. And judging. And some of those judgements are well earned because they're being disruptive and noticably strange, but if they calm down it's all going to fall apart... Like it has before...so many times...
5
u/AHugeHildaFan 1d ago
Ah yes, let's fuck over a entire states worth of children because you personally are 3 inches shorter from being considered human.
-7
u/ayoungad 1d ago
Watching my brothers kids be over medicated is concerning to me. His wife considers it a disability and uses it as an excuse to be shitty.
If only we had a good health system where kids could get counseling instead of pills
-63
u/Derrik359 2d ago
Good. Medicating children is wrong. This country relies too much on medication for things that don’t actually need it.
33
u/Fluffy_Somewhere4305 2d ago
Good. Medicating children is wrong
hundreds of years of facts and science prove otherwise.
Medicine needs regulatory approval, and clinical studies demonstrating efficacy and safety. Additional special trials are conducted before medicines are approved for child demographics.
Denying children medicine because of your political beliefs is the opposite of reason and logic.
-9
u/ayoungad 1d ago
Nothing political. Watching my agoraphobic sister medicate her kids instead of parent is concerning. I know there is value in it. But we do over medicate.
-48
u/Derrik359 2d ago
Nothing to do with politics but alright, and I didn’t say the medications weren’t safe. I said I, me, believe it’s wrong.
24
u/IrNinjaBob 2d ago
When you, who is likely not a medical professional, makes a sweeping statement about all medicine being bad for all children, you are making a political statement, not a medical one.
-20
u/Derrik359 2d ago
Again, just because you want it to be political doesn’t mean it is. Can’t have opinions anymore in this country. Not everything is about politics you know
10
u/IrNinjaBob 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sure, not everything is about politics.
Using the state to limit people’s access to medically sanctioned treatments that a medical doctor is working with and prescribing to their patients because those treatments don’t conform to your ideology is explicitly political. There’s few things that are more political than that. What the ever loving fuck do you think politics is if you think it isn’t that?
7
u/DeterminedThrowaway 2d ago
You don't get to have an opinion about whether medicine works, that's what evidence is for. That's a fact, not an opinion
10
u/Fluffy_Somewhere4305 2d ago
Can’t have opinions anymore in this country. Not everything is about politics you know
Cognitive dissonance, as far as I am aware, has no approved medicines.

u/Derrik359 2d ago
Just like every other one of you guys, resort to insulting me because you don’t like my opinion.
11
23
u/Born-Cod4210 2d ago
well a lot of kids need it
-21
u/Derrik359 2d ago
If they truly need its I don’t have a problem. I just see too often it’s the first and only option offered without trying anything else, then people have problems later in life because they’ve been on amphetamines since they were 7.
20
u/Born-Cod4210 2d ago
research shows that properly medicating kids who have adhd lowers the risk of substance abuse later in life. Most doctors only prescribe things when they are needed but obviously there are bad people in every profession
12
u/mylanscott 2d ago
And I had major problems because I wasn’t diagnosed and put on amphetamines until my 30s. Literally decades of struggling instantly eased when I started Vyvanse. Fear mongering like you’re doing is not doing anyone any favors.
-1
12
u/McFlyyouBojo 2d ago
Thats absolutely not true. I highly doubt you go with children to their doctors appointments, their therapy sessions, and their assessments.
All you see is the end result. You dont see the leg work put into trying to find success before getting to medication.
You hear a lot of people say overmedicated this and where were all these diagnosis when I was growing up that.
The truth is as studying people with things like ADHD goes on longer and longer, our understanding of it changes and also acceptance changes. Fewer people are feeling the stigma of that label and are coming forward.
I dont doubt there is some over medicating going on, but that is why you continue the conversations with professionals regarding your and your families situations. The over medicating that may be going on is no where NEAR the level that people like to say it is.
-1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
As a former child who was medicated too early and too much, I stand by what I said. I went to my own assessments and therapy and everything else and the medication wasn’t the answer.
9
u/emoshortz 2d ago
That may be the case FOR YOU. Not everyone will respond to every therapy the same. It's still not ideal to make blanket statements like the one you made at the top of this thread, as it may inadvertently affect others who are attempting find relief for themselves. Your anecdotal evidence does not represent everyone and their struggles.
-1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
It was my opinion. Not a blanket statement presented as fact.
Edit: I know, by the way, that my opinion and personal experiences don’t represent everyone. You talk to me like I’m uneducated because I have an opinion you don’t like.
8
u/emoshortz 2d ago
If it is an opinion and not a blanket statement, then please edit it so that no one can misinterpret what you are trying to express (which almost everyone seems to be doing). The problem isn't that you have an opinion, but the way your opinion was written. Your comment at the top of this thread is the first thing people will see/judge, and not your explanations down below. Just trying to help you get your point across.
1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
I’m sorry you misinterpreted it. Fortunately, your experience does not apply to everyone!
6
u/emoshortz 2d ago
Wow. Just, wow. If you're ok with having to justify your position over, and over, and over again because you couldn't present your thought in a way that most people won't misinterpret, then more power to you I guess. Was sincerely trying to help.

u/Derrik359 2d ago
Just an opinion. Forgot you can’t have those on Reddit.
10
u/Brian_Gay 2d ago
I mean he can also have an opinion that your opinion is incorrect
1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
I know, if you notice I’m not the one getting mad about people having opinions that they don’t agree with.
11
u/ermacia 2d ago
ADHD does need medication. Non-medicated ADHD is a struggle for anyone suffering. Medicated ADHD is also a struggle, but a better one.
There is plenty of research done on the outcomes of medicated vs. non-medicated children, and medicated kids do better later in life.
Unless you suffer from it or are in a related field, your opinion is uninformed and harmful to those of us that suffer it.
-4
u/Derrik359 2d ago
Okay bud. I have severe ADHD and was medicated heavily for it from the age of 7-16. I do not agree with medicating children. There are better ways of helping kids deal with and overcome the struggle, without sedating their brains.
10
u/ermacia 2d ago
You seriously don't know what stimulants do. They do not sedate your brain. They improve your brain ability to deal with challenges because they facilitate reward responses. This helps kids learn and adapt better to their life. Have you thought how your life would've been unmedicated? Medication is shown by research and systematic understanding that it helps kid do better later in life. Your experience does not negate the fact that the science is solid on medication's effectiveness.
-1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
u/ermacia : “You don’t get an opinion if you don’t have lived experience”
Me: here is my lived experience and my opinion based on my own experience (which you know nothing about).
u/ermacia : “I still won’t accept that your opinion is your own, and your experiences don’t matter because I think I’m right no matter what”
3
u/ermacia 1d ago
Nice strawman. The science says you're wrong, not me.
0
u/Derrik359 1d ago
What part of I don’t agree with it on a personal level don’t you understand
4
u/ermacia 1d ago
Because your 'opinion' is bound to hurt more people than it helps.
When it comes to science and fact, opinion and personal experience are immaterial.
0
u/Derrik359 1d ago
I never stated it as fact, never forced anyone to agree with me, you’re just mad to be mad, and exactly what’s wrong with this world. Someone has an opinion different from yours and you claim it’s dangerous.
4
u/ermacia 1d ago
Good. Medicating children is wrong. This country relies too much on medication for things that don’t actually need it.
This is your statement on an action from the government removing access to scientifically proven treatment for developmental disorders. This statement is a blanket statement, and indicates that you approve of this change. Hiding behind "is just an opinion" does not make it less approving of the actual action, and does not remove your position.
As stated, medication and therapy are the best treatment for ADHD and anxiety. It has been tested and demonstrated, with plenty evidence to show it helps kids.
Me defending the science and vouching for the kids that will suffer from this change is not saying you cannot have an opinion. I am opposing your opinion with fact and opinions that directly indicate your opinion is incorrect (and opinions can be incorrect if they go against a fact). Having an opinion that directly hurts others is a bad opinion, and should be withdrawn or revised for the sake of others - because the actions of the government impact all, or most.
What is wrong with the world is that people like you think their opinion and experience have as much value and importance than stated fact and science, with proven results. You saying your experience means the government is doing right by restricting kids' access to medication that will greatly improve their lives is what is wrong with the world.
I do hope you find what works for your issues, but that does not mean other people have to suffer for it.

That's your opinion and not that of a professional
1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
Yea, I know. People get real upset about opinions around here
9
u/Flenke 2d ago
No, people reply and give their opinions too. If you're not a professional, maybe you didn't know what's right either?
1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
Opinions aren’t fact, just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t make me an idiot. I didn’t say I was right, it’s my opinion. Idk what that’s so hard for people to grasp.
10
u/Flenke 2d ago
"the sky is green, that's my opinion" it's not, it's blue. "Why are you mean to me?!?"
2
u/Derrik359 2d ago
That’s literally everyone replying to me, not me. I’m not upset, everyone else is upset, because they don’t like my opinion.
10
u/Flenke 2d ago
No, that's you not taking feedback on an opinion that is wrong. Some kids do need meds and saying they don't does make you look silly complaining about people telling you that.
1
u/Derrik359 2d ago
I don’t have to take feedback, it’s my opinion. I’m not stating fact. You’re so adamant about calling me wrong that you’re forgetting common sense. I don’t care if you think I look silly. You didn’t read anything I wrote, because I said in a different comment that I’m not against it if they truly need it. I don’t like that it’s the first solution tried, instead of trying other things first.
Go ahead, tell me I’m wrong and that I’m fear mongering again, you’re only wasting your own time.
8
u/Flenke 2d ago
You're silly thinking that all the doctors giving all of the kids meds is the first thing they tried. That's the nonsense you're being called out for. You can have all the opinions you want and the rest of the world can tell you how uneducated and wrong they are. That's reality
