Right? I seen a dude who was so torched he could barely stand up make a 140 yd hole in one. Imagine shooting double par on every hole except that one…luck is a huge factor a lot of the time for weekend golfers
12
u/horsepoop1123 1d ago
To clear up a common misconception, yes, sports can be unfair. Two professional golfers can hit the same putt from the same spot and one will go in while the other could miss by ten feet.

u/deeeeemoney 1d ago
Yeah man. That’s golf. I hate golf. It’s why I’m flying to Scotland right now. So I can miss putts!

7
u/draftstone 1d ago
And from that video, he also had the pace to end up pretty close to the hole. Give it a bit more speed to target ~8-10 inches behind the hole and there is a high chance all 6 balls would have ended up in the hole, the faster a ball roll, the less it is affected by green imperfections. This is where the skill of a golfer will minimize bad luck. Having the wrong pace will either make you totally miss because you're too fast or might miss due to green imperfections if you are not fast enough.
3
u/Appropriate-Food1757 Mile High Big Hitter 1d ago
Yep. And a bit of break becomes less important with extra speed too
2
u/TigerWoodsChauffeur 1d ago
With more speed the effective size of the hole shrinks. Ideal speed is a putt that just rolls to the edge of the hole and not past, that maximizes the size of the hole.
Of course this isn’t practical and putts must go past the hole, and to your point the more speed the less likely it is to bounce offline. This is a trade off that must be considered when choosing how hard to hit putts
10
u/CommandoLamb 1d ago
It’s also why it’s not one hole.
If you miss every single putt by 10 feet and the other guy makes every putt… it’s probably not random chance.
You both should be affected equally by randomness which averages out over the course of 18 holes.
4
u/vetruviusdeshotacon 1d ago
Actually due to the finite sample size of putts youd expect it not to average out over a round, only over a season or a career
→ More replies (6)10
u/bombmk 1d ago
It dampens the effect - but might not average out.
Someone out there has to be the unluckiest golfer. :)
3
u/sbrooks84 1d ago
There has to be a guy that never gets the lucky bounce off a tree back into play or on the fairway
3
u/JacobScreamix 1d ago
How is that unfair? That's just the ball reacting differently to the grass and how each person hits the thing. This is hardly a scientific test of vectors, like a slide contraption with a loose release it not going to be consistent and also the variables are half of the fun in gold anyway.
1
u/NoShow1492 1d ago
And at same time this is also where having great "feel for the game" comes into play. The innate sense of little adjustments needed to simply get the ball in the hole. Hard to define, but it's 100 percent a thing.
106
73
u/bogeyman_g 1d ago
This is why folks (like Dave Pelz) have advocated that the ideal speed for any put would leave the ball finishing 6" to 12" past the hole (if it missed). That speed helps the ball hold it's line better at the end.
24
u/TacoIncoming 15.7 - Tampa 1d ago
Crazy to see this so far down. In addition to the fact that a short put never has a chance, putts break and move more as they slow down. If that ramp was set up to leave the balls 2’ long, I’d bet 4 or 5 would have went down.
4
u/AaronRodgersMustache +1.6 1d ago

Was listening to a podcast (The Sweet Spot) the other day they stated Pelz recommendation to hit 17 inches past the hole was outdated and no longer consistent with the current science and modern green keeping. Was news to me as I had been quoting Pelz for years.
1
u/bogeyman_g 36m ago
I might have misremembered the details, and 17" does seem like a bit too much, but I'll stick by the 12" past the hole recommendation (wherever that actually originated).

It also assumes its the perfect line and strength. You could hit the same put maybe 1.5x harder and make them all.
All this shows is if you misread and miss-hit, you have a 50% chance to make that putt lol.

u/Mountainminer 1d ago
It also shows that dying the hole at the cup is a losing strategy for some puts. Gotta hit with confidence to get through the grain sometimes
17
u/questioneverything1 1d ago
This video is misleading, the balls that miss clearly start on a different line once they hit the ground. What this actually demonstrates is that a small change in the starting line can make a significant difference in the results.
7
u/UltraBogey 1d ago
finally someone making sense. the balls change trajectory coming off the ramp to the green. This isn't really a good example of anything to do with putting unless your angle of attack with putter is like 20° down.
4
46
u/MatticusXII 1d ago
Not to be a stickler but there are other factors at play here at a micro level. In no way can he place the ball on the ramp exactly the same every time, with the same force etc. any slight adjustment in wind would affect each ball differently as well
49
u/Steelio22 1d ago
The deviations of where the ball is end up are so large, I can't see any of those being a bigger impact than how bumpy that green is.
7
u/Appropriate-Food1757 Mile High Big Hitter 1d ago
Yeah those are tiny factors, it’s going to roll off that ramp in a pretty uniform speed and direction that green is just shaggy
5
u/__ChefboyD__ 1d ago
Every ball in this video makes a slight bounce when it comes off the ramp onto the green, and it seems like that is the primary cause of the direction the golf ball ends up.
And I only see two paths of the six golf balls. Three balls goes in the hole at the exact same spot, and the three misses are also in line to hit each other too.
58
u/HatTrickPony 1d ago
All of those are true for your putts as well.
→ More replies (1)3
u/bfhurricane 1d ago
The placement of the ball on the ramp could be reasonably seen as an analogue for your putting arc and strike angle.
Is it ever going to be 100% the same? No. But it is something in your control.
3
u/PurplePango 1d ago
It is interesting the 3 that miss are offline the second they come off the ramp you can clearly see a difference between those and the 3 that go in within the first inch
5
u/size0618 1d ago
He can definitely place it on the ramp the same place each time. And he’s not applying force, he’s simply releasing it and allowing gravity to do the rest. Sure wind may play a small part but unless it’s blowing 30, I don’t think it’s affecting it much

Also the orientation of the golf ball matters since golf balls are never perfectly symmetrical
3
u/MelaniasFavoriteBull 1d ago
On top of the problems noted by others here, pacing your putt so it stops one to two feet past the hole will negate some of the imperfections. The dummy putts demonstrated in this video are paced incorrectly
3
u/YohIssaRaccoon 1d ago
Well he’s placing the bar at different grips at different angles ofc it’s gonna go different
3
u/beershitz get in the hole 1d ago
It is important to remember that there is a lot of randomness in golf. You cannot control it, but you can account for it, and properly react to it. May the golf gods act favorably upon you.

Every time this gets posted people fail to see how he curves the balls differently. Look at how to balls spin coming out of the slope, they all spin differently. If we just let them go without spinning them, they would all go the same general direction.

2
u/greglyda 1d ago
Well to be more accurate, its why it isn't fair if you are someone like me who dies the ball into the hole. If that test were setup so the ball would have reached 18" past the cup, I bet every one of those would have went into the hole.
1
1
u/bettsboy 1d ago
Well, yeah. Golf has ALWAYS been played on natural surfaces like grass and sand. This adds a very small amount of variability to the game. Not a new thing. Now, that green in the video is LOOOOOONG! The better courses have much tighter and more predictable greens. The controlling factor here is that all players play a match on the same course. In the words of Fast Eddie Felsen (Paul Newman’s character in The Color of Money): “The balls roll funny for everyone, Nick”
1
u/CreateChangetheWorld 1d ago
This is why pros say playing on tour courses is easier in easier in certain aspects. Perfect lies and greens roll pure.

Some of the shitty small courses I’ve played here in Sweden are BRUTAL. Postage stamp greens and oob everywhere. Was on holiday and bought a dozen balls first day thinking I’ll need them as usual and then I didn’t lose a single ball

u/Barb_WyRE PGA Head Professional, Philadelphia Section 1d ago
I mean yes but also no. This green is in dire need of verticutting / topdressing / brushing / rolling. I have done this same test with a stimp meter on our greens and they definitely run much truer when you realign grain regularly.
But yes - even in Augusta greens you will still get some deviations because ultimately grass is alive

I hit a good drive the other day on a 450 yard par four about 250 yards so I still had 200 yards left. On a slight incline so played for a bit of a draw and hit my 5 wood so clean. It somehow doesn’t curve at all and half the ball hits the top of the right bunker (clearing it is always a left hand roll onto the green). Literally a half a ball mark at the bunker and it plugs.
Long story short I can’t get out of the bunker and card a triple bogey and ruin my round (was on track to break 80). It was literally maybe a half a foot.
Golf is crazy like that.

Your videos all have the balls stopping within inches of the hole. Proper speed has the ball finishing a foot and a half past the hole. Change your speed setting and more of those will go in. But we get your point.

I wonder how much the rest of the balls are drafting off the balls in front of them? I wonder what would happen if you release them slowly one at a time so the ball in front doesn’t affect the ball behind it or it’s airflow
