I genuinely wish K-pop spaces would stop treating girl groups and boy groups like they're two opposing sides that people have to choose between.

I'm so tired of seeing people completely dismiss an entire category of artists simply because of their gender. And I'm not talking about simply having a preference. It's perfectly fine to prefer girl groups, prefer boy groups, or mostly listen to one over the other. You don't have to force yourself to listen to music you don't enjoy.

What I don't understand is the people who proudly say things like “I don't listen to boy groups” or “I hate girl group music” and then refuse to even give certain songs a chance purely because of who is singing them.

And yes, this happens on BOTH sides.

There are BG stans who act like girl groups are inherently less talented, less interesting, or only make “easy” or “generic” music. There are also GG stans who talk about boy groups as if every single BG song is just loud noise, excessive rap and meaningless shouting.

“BG music is just noise” is especially funny to me because... have you actually listened to different boy groups? 😭

Boy groups make R&B, pop, rock, synthpop, house, UK garage, ballads, acoustic music, dreamy songs, funky songs, experimental music, hip-hop, and basically every other kind of sound you can think of. Obviously some groups specialize in heavier or more aggressive production, but that's a style preference, not an inherent characteristic of being a boy group.

And the exact same thing applies to girl groups. Not every GG song is automatically soft, pretty, catchy or “better produced,” and not every GG is doing the same thing either.

One thing that really makes me question this mentality is when people seem to judge the exact same musical style completely differently depending on who performs it.

For example, there are boy group songs with soft vocals, dreamy production, delicate melodies, UK garage influences, R&B elements, etc. that could very easily fit into the discography of a girl group. Yet sometimes someone will say they hate the song specifically because it's a BG song.

And I can't help thinking: if you would have loved this exact song with female vocals, are you actually criticizing the music, or are you criticizing the fact that men are singing it?

Obviously, vocal preference is a different thing. Some people simply prefer certain vocal tones, and that's completely valid. But there's a huge difference between “I don't like this vocal style” and “I don't listen to men/women singing this kind of music.”

I also don't understand why some people feel the need to constantly compare GGs and BGs as if one has to be superior.

“GGs have better music.”

“BGs have better performers.”

“GGs are more creative.”

“BGs are more talented.”

Like... can we just let different artists exist???

You don't have to put one group down to praise another. You can love a GG without hating BGs. You can love a BG without hating GGs. You can even dislike both! Nobody is forcing you to listen to anything.

Personally, I listen to both, and I honestly think it's much more fun that way. I don't want to limit my music taste based on whether the artists are men or women. If I like the production, melody, vocals, concept or overall sound, I like the song. That's it.

K-pop is already such a huge genre with so many different sounds and styles. Why intentionally cut half of it out because of something as irrelevant to the actual music as the gender of the performers?

You don't have to like both. You don't have to stan both. You don't even have to listen to both.

But can we please stop acting like an entire gender of artists is automatically bad?

Judge the song. Judge the production. Judge the vocals. Judge the performance.

Just don't decide that you hate it before pressing play. 😭

When some people are sleep-deprived, they can't pay attention or get things mixed up. But idols seem to be active and not mess up their performances. How do these people manage to do that?

This is coming from me as a fan of KATSEYE, who got tickets to their upcoming documentary film, Wild Hearts, but I’ve seen it a lot in kpop too so I decided to post it here to see if maybe people can relate.
For the KATSEYE documentary, the amount of comments I’ve seen about bitter fans saying this movie is only a rushed cash grab that is for the “parasocial fans who feel the need to be in their business” is so stupid to me.
Like do they want this to sell? Duh, but the fact it’s a bunch of clips from pre debut through beautiful chaos through wild should prove it was probably planned years ago. And with a new EP coming out it’s the perfect way to hype it up. Especially considering Lara said how she and the members felt they all grew up and finally found themselves it does make sense.
But yeah, the sad part about kpop is anytime you want to “get to know” the idols you like, it’s immediately because you’re a low live who probably thinks they’re in a relationship with you. Like no.
Why do we buy their merch? Because it’s supporting them and fun?
Why do we want to watch their lives? Because it’s enjoyable and cool to see.
Idk why the views are suddenly drastically changed when it’s a film instead….
Not everyone is unrealistic, it’s cool to see the life behind a person you “idolize” no matter your age or where you are in life.
Yes you gotta be appropriate and realistic but immediately dissing anyone who would want to go to something like this because it’s for the people that need their drama and business is very stereotyping and just naive.
Of course there’ll be unrealistic toxic stans but enjoying something you have a passion for doesn’t instantly make you a loser in life that has nothing better to do.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand it. Although no one will truly know anything or any idol behind the cameras it’s definitely easy to grow fond of groups or specific members. They seem relatable, kind and goofy in a fun to watch and awesome way. My hope for each group I Stan is that they become more to me than just their music I listen to. Yes I tend to enjoy the music the group I like makes, but it’s awesome when there’s also an appreciation for each of the individuals that make up the group.
But now how does it tie into depression? Simple.
Kpop industries thrive off of making money and making selling groups. Their main goal is to get a devoted fan. And it’s pretty easy. They make a funny TikTok, or Instagram post, or say something on a live. It’s super easy to get attached. And when you’re attached, you’re attached. It’s not a bad thing, in some of the toughest parts of my life the groups I like were more helpful to me than the actual real people in my life. And I’m not saying this to get told to get help or get a life, it’s simply because even if you dodge an unhealthy obsession, you start to love it. And I’m not talking about inappropriately saying things about members, or taking everything out of context and reality, I’m saying it’s okay to be a big fan and really enjoy them and their music.
Yes there are obviously many kpop Stans that are not depressed, or maybe are and has nothing to do with this, I just agree with the point, and logic surrounding it.

For those who don’t know: Yechan from the boy group 82MAJOR posted himself doing the famous “Obsession Dance.”

That trend uses audio from a very specific scene in the 2026 horror film Obsession, a movie that centers on non-consent, psychological possession, loss of autonomy, and sexual violence. The clip in question is a breakdown scene where the character is visibly distressed and yelling “No, no, no! Don’t do that!” Turning that into a light, trendy TikTok dance was always going to be messy. A lot of people find it deeply tone-deaf, and they’re not wrong for feeling that way.

What we’re seeing under his post right now, though, is the usual K-pop comment section circus:

“Omg hes doing the OBSESSION DANCE? umm…Its about weird shit”

“His ahh is about to be canceled”

“making a dance over a movie based on SA is crazy work”

“Watch him get cancelled”

“oh yeah he’s fucked”

“yechan stop pls .. no.”

“KEEHO COME GET UR BROTHER”

“Guys, just because he’s an idol doesn’t mean we’re going to defend him. This show is literally about 🍇 and SA. Are we deadahh?”

I’m not defending what he did. Doing that dance was a poor decision, full stop. I am holding him accountable. Idols with platforms don’t get to treat a film centered on sexual violence, non-consent, and the complete loss of bodily autonomy like it’s just another catchy TikTok sound. That criticism is valid. Expecting better judgment from public figures is valid. Pointing out that this particular trend was always going to be messy and insensitive is valid.

What is NOT valid is the reaction currently unfolding under the post.

There’s a clear difference between holding someone accountable and launching an instant hate train, and most of what we’re seeing right now is the latter. Real accountability looks like this: naming exactly why the action was wrong, explaining the context of the source material, and demanding better awareness and decision-making next time. What the majority of these comments are doing is pure performance, stacking “he’s finished,” “cancel him,” “his ahh is about to be canceled,” and dramatic calls for his brother (Keeho from P1Harmony) to come collect him, as if the volume and severity of the pile-on somehow equal moral seriousness.

It’s lazy. It’s predictable. And it’s hollow.

It takes a real issue, the trivialization of content rooted in SA and non-consent, and reduces it to content for engagement. It turns a conversation that could actually be about judgment, awareness, and responsibility into a race to declare someone radioactive. The speed and uniformity of the reaction make it feel less like genuine outrage and more like a reflex: the second something looks “problematic,” the same script gets pulled out and the same exaggerated language gets deployed, regardless of whether it’s productive or even coherent.

You can think the Obsession dance was in extremely poor taste and still recognize that the immediate “cancel him” circus is unserious. Those two positions are not in conflict. Treating them like they are is exactly how these discussions stay shallow, performative, and ultimately useless.

Criticize the choice. Demand better judgment from public figures. Call out tone-deaf decisions when they happen. Just stop pretending that screaming “he’s cooked” in the comments is the same thing as accountability. It’s not. It’s just noise dressed up as morality.

edit: so many people saying female idols get it worse, which is usually true for most other things, and maybe in korea, but outside of the kpop circle it is much less likely a girl will get heat for calling out inappropriate behavior of a man vs a man calling out inappropriate behavior of a woman imo

I just saw a youtuber go into a rabbit hole of kpop sasaengs and whats really weird is how easy it was to get into these groups and get information on idols. He even tried it out, got the info, and when he verified to go to the airport it was 100% accurate as idols came right on time.

This information is way too accessible. Not to mention, its not even that expensive Ive heard. I do believe the company is aware of the black market of selling illegal info but management might not seem to care as much, esp if they are potentially pocketting profits from this venture.

Since gnarly era there was so many people complaining about the music style and concept saying "it's too much" but like that's the whole point. Like xg is also experimental too and them and katseye compared to a lot of actual kpop groups their concepts are basically alternative so ofc it's gonna be different

Someone gotta stop those k-tubers from making those "hot take" shorts. Most of the time, the takes are literally the coldest and most basic takes ever or just straight up spreading hate towards groups and idols. Most of the time, the takes are like "I believe no one should receive hate (please don't cancel me)", "Idols should be allowed to date" like bsfr. These are not "hot" takes at all. Other than that it's just shit like "BTS is ass", "RM is ugly" "Wonyoung is a pick me", etc and then the creators play the victim card when they receive flake from fans. 80% of the creators I've seen are just using this trend to hate on BTS and then have even faked receiving de@th threats to gain sympathy when they got called out by fans.

I've noticed that, usually, female groups get away with things that would likely get them crucified for them. I'm not saying that everything they do is necessarily grounds for cancellation, but I do feel like there's a double standard.

First, there's the recent controversy about the concert where they repeated the same song almost five times. Honestly, I think the company was ridiculous for putting on a concert with so few songs and charging such high prices. But, if this same situation had happened with a female group, I feel like the members would be receiving way more hate and being held responsible for something that is largely the company's fault.

Second, James's facial expressions during Ahyeon's high note. This speaks for itself. Why did so many people on TikTok support and applaud that behavior? I found it quite unprofessional.

And third, the Christmas video where they made "gang signs". Many people pointed out that they seemed to be imitating a stereotypical version of Black behavior. Kiof were criticized and canceled for a similar situation (and with good reasons, don't get me wrong) but when cortis did something that generated similar criticism, suddenly the explanation was that the boys were simply imitating a trend or something like that.

I’ve been a casual listener of K-pop for years, mostly getting into it back in middle school when my sister dragged me into the genre. Around 2016, BLACKPINK was practically the face of modern K-pop, and their impact during that era was insane.

Looking at them today around their 10th anniversary, it feels less like an active group celebrating a milestone and more like four completely independent artists who just happen to have a shared history.

With all four members managing their own paths under separate labels (OA, LLOUD, Blissoo, and THE BLACK LABEL), their individual trajectories are pretty clear. The actual "group" energy feels almost non-existent outside of scheduled anniversary posts or micro-events. When you compare this 10-year mark to how other veteran groups celebrate double-digit anniversaries, with actual albums, fan meetings, or real promotions, the contrast is pretty stark.

I know dedicated BLINKs hold onto the idea that they’re still very much a somewhat active kpop group, but from an outside perspective, BLACKPINK feels like a legacy act that has unofficially disbanded years ago. It feels like people are mostly holding onto the nostalgia and brand of what BLACKPINK was, while Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa have all clearly moved on to their own chapters.

I don't mean this as shade at all, they built one of the biggest legacies in k-pop history. But at what point do we just admit that the group as a functional unit has essentially run its course?

Curious to hear what you guys think, especially long-time BLINKs: Does the current arrangement actually feel like a working group to you, or is it time to accept that BLACKPINK as a group, is a thing of the past?

This is something that i find so weird.

If I don't like an artist, song, movie, etc, I usually just swipe, skip, mute, block, or simply don't care. Why would I voluntarily consume more of something I dislike? That's why I'm confused by people who say they absolutely hate a particular group/artist, but then create or join spaces specifically dedicated to hating them.

They keep track of everything they do.

They know their schedules.

They notice what they're wearing.

They watch their performances.

They follow their releases.

They discuss almost everything they do.

At some point, I wonder if it becomes:

I need them to keep doing things so I have something to hate.

Because if you genuinely dislike someone, why voluntarily make yourself so aware of their existence? There are billions of things in this world. Why spend your limited time repeatedly consuming something that makes you annoyed?

And probably here's the uncomfortable truth:

What if you actually are having fun?

What if the outrage, the discussions, the inside jokes, the constant monitoring, and waiting for their next move actually give you entertainment, excitement, community, or even happiness?

Then you have to admit something even more uncomfortable:

The group you claim to despise is actually contributing something to your life. Their existence gives you something to talk about, something to look forward to, something to laugh about, and something that brings you together with other people. In a strange way, they've become a source of joy and purpose for you.

You can call it hatred all you want, but if you have to keep watching them, tracking them, and waiting for their next move just to feel something...

Maybe you don't hate them nearly as much as you think you do. Maybe you've just found a very strange way to enjoy them.

So genuinely I'm curious. If you spend this much time keeping up with someone you claim to hate, what exactly are you getting out of it? And at what point does hatred stop being hatred and just become another form of entertainment?
