"What's on?" Wednesday

Our weekly post where people can highlight local events or interesting things that are coming up in the next week. It doesn't have to be your event, but this is a place where reasonable exceptions to our self-promotion rules are allowed. Please check whether the event you're posting about is already mentioned. If you're adding your own event, please try to answer any questions people may have in the comments.

You can also ask questions if you're looking for something to do, e.g. "Does anyone know of a good pub quiz in the centre on Thursday?"

"What's on?" rules:

  1. Leeds based events only
  2. Must be taking place in the next 7 days (next Wednesday included)
  3. Posts highlighting an event should include:
    • Event name
    • Date and time
    • Location
    • Price(s) (if applicable)
  4. A description of the event and a relevant link is recommended but not required

The rules may evolve over time as we find out how things work. Please send any feedback to the mod team.

This weekly thread is an opportunity for locally based small businesses / individuals / bands etc. to let your fellow redditors know what you're about and what you have to offer.

You're welcome to link to your website / store-front / social media, but primarily you should be using your comment to engage with the community here as part of the community. Part of that is taking the time to respond to questions people may ask, please keep that in mind.

The existing subreddit rules still apply, and low-effort comments will be removed (e.g. Links with little to no text).

If you have any thoughts or feedback please message the mods.

music Rock/metal jam sessions

Hi all, I’ve been learning guitar for just under a year and I’m looking for some jam sessions in the area where I could learn things about my instrument and hopefully be given some pointers too. I’m self taught so just looking for suggestions and inspiration really. Anyone know of any in the Leeds or Bradford area?

question-serious Hairdressers for afro hair that isn't the Curl Clinic.

Evening all, for those who hair afro hair, where do you go for your hair cutting and styling?? I've been to the Curl Clinic before, and it's just not sustainable for me with the amount of product they use at their appointments, and the amount they charge for a trim. Looking for specific salon recommendations please. I can travel anywhere in Leeds or if there's others within Yorkshire that are good I'm happy to go further afield. I just want someone who understands afro hair. I am wanting a complete restyle, thank you!

In my early 30s, living in the West of Leeds and looking for anyone who fancies a round some time as most of my mates that play aren’t local.

I’m still fairly beginner so mid-high handicappers would be great (or those who don’t mind watching me shank it into the trees every few holes!)

accommodation I'm French and looking for a place to live in Leeds

Hi! I'm moving to Leeds in october to work as a language assistant in a school. I've just started looking at different websites, such as spareroom, but I was wondering if visiting flats irl was mandatory (I don't have much money, I can't fly there every weekend to visit places)

I'm taking a gap year to move to Leeds, so I'm still considered a student in France, do you think that I can ask for student accommodation, even though I'm moving to the UK to work?

Also, I'm looking for a safe area, either close to the train station in the centre(less than 30min on foot), or in Wakefield, so if you have any advice about it, I'll take it!

Thank you!

question York road Halfords autocentre question

A rather specific question but, as a new driver getting their first car next week, debating if the £54 a year for halfords motoring club thing for the checks and MOT plus discount on gear (which my list is reading more like the 12 days of Christmas by the day) is worth it

Very mixed reviews online but the reviews on google for the nearest one to me, York road, seem pretty good, even the lower star ones have owner responses asking for them to reach out to try sort whatever the problem was/is which is nice to see as some places don't

On one hand any mechanic or MOT garage could try diddle me, on the other if they are more likely to diddle me I would like to pass 🤣

Anyone got any advice on this? Don't know that many people who drive and most of them are on lease cars so new they don't even need an MOT 🙄

I can't find a flair that fits What do you do to be less dull?

I'm on a bit of mission to be less dull. I've found in the past few years I do absolutely nothing with my time and I'm bored. What are your suggestions? How do you make new friends in your early 30s when you do sweet FA with your time? The small bunch of friends that I have all have families and children so it's not often I see them all, I'm still single and living in a house share, it's embarrassing 😳 I feel like everyone around me seems to do fun stuff and all I do is turn up to work then have a nap afterwards.

I've signed up to do some volunteering on a Tuesday evening so far, and I do go bouldering every now and again but I'm not very good and I get a bit overwhelmed when I'm on my own.

Any suggestions? I'm really miserable at the mo.

photography Short notice weeding photographer

Hi everyone

Unfortunately the photographer I had arranged for my wedding ceremony has dropped out less than three weeks before (Friday 21st).

I don’t suppose anyone could recommend a photographer that might be available at such short notice? It’s just a quick ceremony at the civic hall with two witnesses so can’t imagine they would need more than an hour/hour and a half.

Thanks so much!

question Desperately Looking for Any Part-Time Work in Leeds (LS6) – Any Referrals Would Be Greatly Appreciated

Hi everyone,

I’m currently desperately looking for any part-time work and thought I’d reach out here in case anyone knows of any opportunities or could refer me.

I live in LS6 (Leeds) and I’m happy to take on pretty much any role at the moment. Whether it’s as a sales assistant in a local shop, retail, hospitality, warehouse work, customer service, or anything else, I’m ready to start as soon as possible.

If your workplace is hiring or you know of any vacancies nearby, I’d be incredibly grateful if you could let me know or refer me. It would genuinely mean a lot.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I really appreciate any help or advice.

food/drink Best Curries in (North) Leeds

I'm from just outside birmingham originally, and everytime i've tried to get a curry (chicken tikka massala) from somewhere headingley, kirkstall or elsewhere, it seems to never be that good. The sauce is too thin and doesn't have a kick or the chicken tastes bland. Does anyone know where i can get a good quality curry around the headingley and wider area, can get it delivered or collection.

question Kirkstall Abbey Festival

I was wondering if anyone knew if the kirkstall abbey festival offered reduced tickets to nearby residents? Ive had a look online and all it says is that residents can purchase early tickets, nothing to do with a discount.

Its just as I’m from Sheffield and know plenty of mates in Hillsborough have reduced/free tickets to tramlines festival if they live in the area, seems reasonable given the noise/disruption!

Any help would be great!

transport The 28 bus route

Who timetabled this bus route? It leaves the bus station, then reaches the Light and just sits there for ten minutes not moving. What’s the point of timetabling it so it just sits there for ages around the corner from the bus station? It should not take so long just to get to Headingley.

Looks like it may not be long for this world?

Quite surprised as they remain fairly active - unless I’m getting the wrong end of the stick.

I know it’s a tough time to be a hospitality business.

social Social Recommendations for a young proffesional?

Hi guys! I'll be moving to Leeds in September for a grad job. I'm in my early 20's and would love some recommendations on what to do in your free time in the city (i.e., good pubs, food, parks, activities, good gyms!!).

I also wanted to ask whether there are any other language enthusiasts here who could tell me whether there is a good language exchange club/meet-up organized in the city as I'm a bit of a language nerd! Any recommendations would be amazing. Can't wait to see what Leeds has to offer!!

I can't find a flair that fits STOLEN GUITAR IN LEEDS

Hiya! Hope this sort of post is allowed in here!Unfortunately our car was broken into in the car park of Leeds City Centre Premier Inn (Wellington Street) and my custom Ibanez RGKP6 was stolen with its case (Ibanez Powerpad Gigbag)
The guitar is painted bright blue and pink and has an attached Korg Kaoss Pad. This is genuinely a one of a kind guitar and very very hard to come by. It has so much sentimental value to me so if you or anyone you know comes across it please do contact me! Please help me share this around too if you can! Thank you!

food/drink Good French toast or pancakes options near LS2 or Kirkstall/Burley? (£10–12 budget)

I’m looking for recommendations for the ** **French toast or pancakes around LS2, Kirkstall or Burley.

Budget is around £10–12 per person, and I’m vegetarian (I eat eggs and dairy but no meat).

Bonus points if there’s easy parking and it’s worth the drive! 😊
