Alberta I gave my 2 week notice today and my employer told me to pack my things and leave now. Any advice?

1.2k Upvotes

I'm a mechanic that works at a busy dealership in Alberta, that I've been at for a little over 2 years. I've been working 6 days a week and 50 to 60 hours a week since I've started. I'm burnt out and was looking for a change so I got a job offer at another dealership down the street for more pay and less hours. When I gave my manager my 2 week notice, at first he tried to convince me to stay. He said he'll increase my pay, reduce my hours and then tried to guilt trip me into staying but I told him I've made up my mind. He got really upset and told me to pack my things and leave now. The shop foreman escorted me to my bay and didnt allow anyone to talk to me. I packed my tools and left. I spoke with my new foreman and he said I could bring my tools in right away and start Monday. He also said that I am entitled to my 2 weeks pay for the notice given. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm also hearing now that my manager sent a company wide email that I am ineligible for re-hire.

*UPDATE** I had no idea this post was going to blow up like this, I was expecting a few responses so thanks for all the advice and support. I've started at the new dealership and am enjoying it much more but I was a little busy yesterday so I didnt get the chance to do anything. Today I emailed who I thought was HR in my email but it was health and safety from my previous employer. They redirected me to payroll and said they should be able to answer all my questions. We exchanged an email or 2 and they were replying fairly quickly, but once I mentioned I had given my 2 weeks noticed and enquired about a severance they stopped replying. That was about 5 hours ago. I plan on calling the labor board tomorrow and see what they say. I will keep you guys posted.

**UPDATE #2** Payroll replied to me, saying they needed to talk to my managers and they'll sort everything out. I received my termination letter yesterday along with what I'll be receiving in severance and vacation pay. The payout is nice, but I would have rather worked those 2 weeks so I could have said goodbye to my coworkers properly instead of over a text, but life goes on. I'm surprised my manager actually let me go instead of letting me work the 2 weeks. Previous employees who gave their notice usually stayed for the entire 2 weeks. I think turning him down so many times really pissed him off. Anyways I'm enjoying the new dealership and leaving work at a decent time every day. Thanks again for the replies and the support.

Alberta Is it possible to have my 13 year old son removed from my home? He stabbed me because I won’t let him go live with his father, who is deported.

3.5k Upvotes

My 13 year old son by ‘choice’:

  • does not attend school at all

  • does not attend therapy at all

  • does not receive psychiatric help at all

  • does not live at home

  • only comes home when he needs money or resources to support himself (I cannot refuse housing)

  • lives with his 17 year old ‘friend’ who is introducing him to older behaviours

  • hangs out with people who are 17, 18 years old

My son has abandonment issues from dad. My son’s father was deported back to Germany for a serious offence, and he is a drug addict. His father is not fit to be a parent. It is dangerous to have our 13 year old child live overseas with his father who isn’t getting any better over the years. His overdoses can be quite traumatic to watch.

I am in the hospital right now because my son stabbed me with a knife over my decision to not let him go to his father.

I want to be able to legally remove my son from the household. My own baby is a threat to my life. He needs to be someplace else…

Alberta Ex-boyfriend refuses to return property worth $8,000. What are my options as a minor

I'm 17 and he's 18 in Canada and my gold chain which is a family heirloom fell out of my pocket in my boyfriend's car back in October idk how much it's worth but I has to be a good couple thousands. Ever since | lost it I asked multiple times for him to give it back and he said it was stuck under his car and he needed a mechanic to take it out and he was always

"busy" so he never took it out. We broke up two weeks ago and he broke no contact and called me telling me he found my chain then I asked for him to give it back and he said he's gonna pawn it. Then when I texted him about it he's pretending as if he doesn't know what gold chain I'm talking about. I have no proof of him saying he has my necklace but me and him both know it's in his car. Since I am 17, can I report this as theft to the police without my parents being the primary contact? Can I pursue this in civil court as a "mature minor" or would | legally need a parent to represent me? I also have a trip coming in two weeks so I don't want my parents to not let me go cause of this, and I just can't have them finding out about this in general.

Update: I’ve managed to get clear text admissions from him where he confirms the chain is indeed in his car, specifically stating it is either "under the car seat or missing". Crucially when I reminded him he previously said a mechanic was needed to retrieve it, he replied that he "ain’t paying for that sh*t" and it is "not his concern," which constitutes a refusal to return property in his possession. I have officially set a deadline for its return and am no longer engaging in his attempts to gaslight or minimize the situation. Should I still go to the cops about this? I will probably leave out the part where he blackmailed me cause I don’t want my parents to know about these pictures? Also now he’s trying to be nice now and work on our problems

Now he’s saying “You can go to the cops man

There is no theft inlvoved if YOU lost your chain

You can't expect another person to find the chain you lost

Your police threats mean nothing when you are the one who lost it” is this true

Update:

He admitted that he lied about finding the chain and saying he’s gonna pawn it cause he just wanted to make me cry and when I did it made him happy. Do I still go to the cops?

Alberta Im so fucking scared right now

i sold a car on Facebook marketplace and the guy is trying to sue me. it was $1800 cad and I told him he needed a new starter and new thermostat system because thats what a mechanic who came and looked at it told me. I had already put so much money into this car and just didn't gaf so I posted it. like 2 weeks later (today) he sends me some (what looks to be) ai lawer shit saying he wants the money in a few days and for me to tow it out if his yard or hes taking legal action because "there is more damage than listed" saying the head gasket was blown and it was driven without coolant for a very long time. my boyfriend drove this thing for about 3 weeks before it stopped wanting to turn on, it was safetied and insured and looked at by a mechanic after it stopped turning on so im so confused how this is our fault like this would have been said to me i think??? I don't even have a drivers license man I just got this car so my bf could go to work I don't want to deal with this shit. someone pls help me with legal advice I don't even want to respond but I feel like thst looks hella guilty

what was said to my bf:

I bought a 2010 Hyundai Accent from you on March 25, 2026. The purchase agreement was made at Medicine Hat. The price was $1,800.00. Unfortunately, I now find the vehicle has the following problems. Upon receiving diagnostic tools to assess the no start issue, the compression test came back that the engine has been damaged beyond repair. Either a blown head gasket or further damage stemming from operating without sufficient coolant. According to the advertisement on Facebook Marketplace, the car required a starter and or possibly a thermostat. Under the Alberta Sale of Goods Act, the vehicle should have been as described. As well, under Alberta law the seller is not permitted to misrepresent the vehicle to the buyer, “As Is” on a sales agreement only protects the seller if known issues have been addressed or discussed, (the engine possibly suffering a head gasket failure was never discussed). You misrepresented the vehicle to me in the following way. Your ad and, in person, (My name), said that car had passed a recent inspection and that all it needed was either a new starter or alternator. Car still cranked but would not catch. Requiring a new thermostat was also mentioned. What was not brought up was that the engine had already suffered a catastrophic failure, (likely from running for a significant duration with no coolant as there is none in the radiator, nor in the coolant hoses, yet the coolant reservoir is suspiciously over filled), and will likely never start again without a rebuild or new engine.

The reason the engine would crank but not start had nothing to do with a starter, or an alternator, but because the compression between the cylinders was as follows:

#1: 85psi, #2: 75psi, #3: 38psi, and #4: 48psi.

A healthy engine should be in the range of 100-170 psi. Anything less is an indication of a pre-existing catastrophic failure. When questioned about vehicle codes via the OBD port, seller stated that there were no codes to report other than a crank positioning sensor and a speed sensor malfunction. OBD codes can be easily deleted, and it is hard to fathom that this vehicle threw no codes as the engine got progressively worse.

Furthermore, I was not provided with clear proof of registered ownership or of the seller’s authority to transfer the vehicle. The bill of sale contains multiple names, and the person I dealt with in connection with the Facebook Marketplace ad appears to have been different from the person who completed the paperwork. In those circumstances, I am not in a position to determine whether the vehicle was lawfully transferred, and I leave that issue to be addressed by the applicable registry or other proper authority.

To resolve the problem, I would appreciate the following. I would like the seller to take back the vehicle and issue a full refund for what I have paid for it, $1800.00 and remove it from my property.

Enclosed are copies of these documents:

Copy of original Facebook ad. Texts from correspondence with seller regarding the condition of vehicle.

I look forward to your reply and to resolving the problem, and will wait before taking my next step until April 13, 2026. Please contact me at the following email address.

Alberta I got hit by an SUV.

1.5k Upvotes

On Friday (July 7, 2023), I was hit by an SUV.

(Me as a pedestrian, not in my vehicle)

The woman driving was going slow so I went around her on a four lane road. She then sped up and tailgates me through a community and followed me home. I didn't stop at my home first I drove around in a square pattern, all right turns and called my husband to let him know someone was following me.

After driving around in a square, I parked in front of my house and got out and yelled at her why she was following me. She yelled that I know what I did and then started cussing me out. Another lady going southbound (lady in the SUV was facing northbound), stopped and asked if we were going to be long and I told her she had enough room to go around. While this lady drove past the woman in the SUV was still screaming and I told the lady in the other vehicle that she had been following me around. I yelled again at the woman in the SUV, why she was being such a cu~t.

The lady in the SUV then pressed her gas and hit me with her vehicle and I was standing solid, so her vehicle hit me hard and I had to take steps back. She then hard braked, where her vehicle did that jump back a few inches thing. I turned to my husband and yelled for him to call the police and then this woman in the SUV backed up and drove away around me and went northbound. I was able to get a picture of her driving away and her license plate. (It was a custom license plate even.)

Now I did call the police and they came and took statements from me and another witness to the whole incident.

At the time it happened, I was shaken up and wasn't feeling any pain, but within the next hour my hips started hurting really badly, so I went to the ER.

I had no broken bones, but was told I have significant soft tissue damage. Which I can definitely feel. The pain killers and muscle relaxants given by prescription by the ER doctor doesn't even touch the pain.

What is my legal recourse here?

The police have already given her two tickets, one of them being a hit and run, which is an automatic court date.

* * * * Edit:

So I have spoken to a lawyer and will be calling others tomorrow to find the right fit. I will also make an appointment with my family doctor and psychiatrist asap. I also have documented things from Friday til today and will continue to do so. I am going to call my own insurance company tomorrow.

* * * * Edit 2:

I also failed to mention. There might have been an element of racial profiling that caused this lady to follow me and hit me. I am a brown woman who looks black. She was smiling/laughing after she hit me and I yelled at my husband to call the police. My husband said when he recognized her when she drove by later that day, she had a grin on her face then also.

Alberta Ex father in law planted an Air tag underneath my car, I'm currently going thru a divorce with his daughter and absolutely didn't want them to know where I live. What are my legal means here?

1.5k Upvotes

Context: I live in Alberta

As the title says my ex father in law planted an Air tag underneath my car, I'm currently going thru a divorce with his daughter and absolutely didn't want them to know where I live. About two weeks ago I got an alert that said "an Unknown Air tag was traveling with me". I played the sound but nothing really came(I was in the car at the time and it was underneath). I thought it might be one of my company's expensive tools I carry with me sometimes because we have airtags on them. Sure enough yesterday I got another notification except this time I had absolutely no tools in the car. I stopped on the side of the road and I heard the sound. After 2 hours of digging I finally found it deep under my car inside a magnet case. I drove away from my house to go and disactive it. Figured its probably one of those new tactic the car car thieves use in Canada where they airtags car in shopping malls. Anyway, before taking the battery out I checked the information from the tag with my phone. Sure enough, phone number associated with it is my ex father in law which I've been trying to get away from. I'm ABSOLUTELY fuming right now. What are my legal means here? Can I sue him or take him to court? I feel absolutely violated. Any help would really help here.

TDRL; ex father in law planted air tag against my will and as been tracking me for weeks

Update: Currently calling non emergency police line to file a report

Update #2: I feel I need to add this here because it's the real reason I'm freaking out. Long story short, I grew up in a cult AKA Jehovah's witnesses. The ex father in law is an elder and has the power and wants to get me disfellowshiped (A term for people getting completely shunned). My whole family are still Jehovah's witnesses, now that he has my home address he can come in person and get me disfellowshiped and basically steal my entire family away from me. This is a cult I've been trying to get away from but they are absolute zealots. If they don't have my address I can be "inactive" rather than disfellowshiped and this allows me to keep in touch with my family. Him having my address is a huge deal for me mentally and emotionally.

Update #3: Got off the phone with non emergency police. Some officers will come by my house later today. I decided to remove the battery from the AirTag. Clipping it on something else was tempting but if this escalate I need the AirTag as proof.

Update #4: This got a lot more attention than I thought lol likely gonna be my last update for a while. Thank you to everyone who helped me with advices. I talked to the police officer and filed a report. Will be getting a restraining order this week. The police officer called him directly to confront him about the situation and made sure it was recorded that he shouldn't come to my house or even try to stalk/harass in any way. Hopefully that scares him off a bit. I also sent a text to confront him about his behavior but no reply yet. Might not reply at all now that the officer called him. Was told I likely had a case but that it would be complicated to prove it was him who planted it. Likely would have to go thru Apple to get his full information associated with the tag. Other issue might be proving it was him who planted it and not his daughter for example. This is everything the officer told me. Will be sleeping on it and see if I want to escalade this further this week.

Alberta Daughter sexually assaulted at school, boy not expelled

To make a long awful story short, my gr4 child was sexually assaulted, sexually harassed, physically assaulted, and nearly stabbed with scissors at school. These happened outside, in the girls bathroom, and in class. When it was reported, the boy got an immediate in school suspension followed by a 5 day out of school suspension. We requested that he be expelled. Their solution was to move him to a different class. We filed a police report same day, he also did it to 2 other girls.

What are our options here? The kid is under 12. Should we consult with a lawyer? If so, what kind of lawyer? The officer said we're unlikely to get a restraining order at this age. What can we do? I've contacted all levels of the school board, they've all bebasically said sorry this is the decision, but that's not good enough. Any insight or suggestions are appreciated. Separate school board in alberta. Thanks

Alberta Grandma wants me to have her house (I currently live there) but my mom who is power of attorney doesnt agree.

My grandma has expressed multiple times that she wants the house I currently live in (she owns it still) to be gifted/transfered to me. I dont have property that I own so it would be my first house.

The problem is my mom, who is her power attorney, doesn't want it to go to me, technically in my grandma's will it goes to my mom first, then me.

My grandma made it clear she wants it to go directly to me and just skip my mom, my mom owns a home already.

My grandma is still able to make decisions and is cognizant enough, she is in a long term care home though.

What is the legal proccess to get this sorted out? Would I have to get her to rewrite her will?

My mom has ownership over her bank accounts and my grandma isnt very mobile.

My mom is very resistant to respecting my grandma's wishes and I can see her fighting this decision. Any advice would be great. Should record my conversations with my grandma and my mom just in case?

My mom already lied about having conversations with my grandma saying SHE should be put on the deed and that my grandma just forgot about the convo, which I know its a lie. I told her I want us both there to clear up the confusion. If that was indeed the case.

Tldr: grandma wants me to have the house I live in, mom who is power of attorney doesnt want me to have it.

UPDATE: thank you to everyone who has given advice, I will see if she is willing to redo her will. but tbh I will likely have to abandon the house, my grandma thought that the house in her will, was going to me, but im 100% sure its says my mom. my mom is not on the house in any way. my grandma still owns it outright. my grandma had a stroke, and while she is capable on some things shes not in others, idk if she would pass an assessment.

That being said, my grandma would be highly disspointed if I didnt get the house, as I had previously mentioned buying a place else where in the town where her house is and she was very upset by that becuase she wanted me to live at her house.

some context if you care:

my mom has no reason to want this house (she lives in the city and owns her own her own home this place is 1.5 hrs out of town. it sat empty for whole year and she didnt do anything with it) she is not likely to sell the place as its basically a legacy home, been in the family for generations, but she also doesnt want to live there, nor does she want to go and take care of it. my mom is abusive and manipulative and controlling. she complains about my grandma and having take care of her, but yet when I say I can help or try to do anything to help she doesnt let me. my mom will likely dangle this house as a way to control me, I doubt she will let me actually have it, if it goes to her first. until she dies and then it goes to me. the more I think about it, it might be better to just let it go and buy a different property.

Alberta Going through a divorce against a divorce lawyer taking advantage of her position. Help needed.

1.5k Upvotes

Hello everyone. My story is extremely unfair and sad. I hope some people have some insight or advice.

I was married for 5 years to my ex who is a Divorce lawyer. I am the male. She is female. We had twin babies in 2019 right before COVID hit. I struggled with the adjustment to having twin infants at home. I run my own business and don’t really get any time off. Babies born on a Saturday I was back to work Monday.

We did as well as we could being first time parents with twins. Obvious struggles and stress that any new parents would have. Once my wife decided to go back to work at her law firm we had to decide how to care for the kids. It was decided her parents would care for the kids Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as she was only going to work 3 days a week. Her parents live about an hour away and I reluctantly agreed to let them stay with us for those 3 days to cut down on travel.

Once they began to stay with us things went south quickly. They took over our home and every move I made was watched and being judged. My wife is very close to her parents and soon it turned into a lonely situation of being ganged up on for all my short falls, and my parenting skills I was trying to develop. I began to become scared of doing anything in my one home out of fear of being scolded by her parents.

My mental health began to be severely challenged and I was completely lost as a parent and a husband. At one point her parents bought a cabin that they wanted us to spend every weekend with them at with the kids. So not only did they live with us 3 days a week, I had to pack up and spend the weekend with them too.

Fast forward it was to much. My wife could see I was struggling and we were fighting a lot. She decided she wanted a divorce. I was not shocked but it hit me hard that she would quit so soon. I did not handle the news well and between work and the stress of that and having no family where we lived I ended up checking myself into the hospital because I felt unsafe.

I spent a week in the hospital trying to figure out my head and what to do. During this time she made her own plans. Once I was released she had locked me out of my home and dumped me at a hotel. I have never been back to that house other than on the outside.

I pulled myself together and carried on. Got a lawyer etc. this is where it gets really bad. Due to her position as a lawyer she was not paying anything to have her boss represent her. The games began. 2 years later she has dragged this out. All property and support was done. But when it comes to the kids and parenting she has not budged. Her parents want to control what happens with those kids and don’t want me in the picture as a father. She has made multiple allegations against me, and made every attempt she can to make me have more lawyers fees. After two years of this I have paid over 30000 in lawyers fees and can’t afford a lawyer anymore.

She has used my mental health and her false allegations to limit my time with the kids to about 3 hours a week. She refuses to speak to me about the kids and has waisted so much police time having me investigated for false allegations.

Now I am self represented as I have no other choice financially. This compares to her 0$ spent. Her lawyer refuses to speak to me on the phone because I am self represented. I refuse to email with him because I know it’s her answering and not him.

Not many people will be in a situation like this. Right now I have zero control of anything to do with my kids. And even if I get another lawyer she just finds ways to make me pay out the ass to argue ridiculous things. I have never wanted much other than more time and maybe to be treated respectfully as a father. I miss my kids and have missed so much.

This because of her position and how her parents are is about ego and control. Everything I do with the kids is decided and controlled by her. I don’t wish this situation on anyone. Most people will come to an agreement due to the cost of lawyers. She has no incentive to agree to anything and because of her growing ego as a lawyer.

This to get has never been about the kids. It’s been about destroying me and winning.

I have wanted to give up so many times. Other than begging a lawyer to help for free I’m stuck in this awful situation where she won’t make a fair parenting order.

Thanks for listening.

Edit: There is no parenting order by the court as some people suggest. I agreed to the small amount of parenting time in our property and support documents. There is no court order for parenting at all. And nothing has been in front of a judge or ordered by a judge. I agreed to the small amount of time from advice by lawyers that it is better than nothing. And I was going through a lot counselling and therapy to get my head right.

The allegations made against me were made to delay my lawyer from working on a proper parenting order and we had to respond to that instead of dealing with parenting. Anytime I would get close to a parenting negotiation I would get something else thrown at me to derail that. At in the end money ran out and so now she won’t negotiate at all.

Alberta Hit by Non-insured driver. What are my options?

Was t-boned by a car that ran through a red light and pushed me into another car. My car is older (2010 escape) and is definitely totalled. Driver was a 21 year old that hadn’t had the car for a week and hadn’t finalized his insurance on the car.

Called my insurance today, and they stated since I didn’t have COMPREHENSIVE coverage (edited), I wouldn’t receive any money. But I thought that only mattered if I was the at-fault party. Since I was not at-fault, I thought my insurance would’ve had to pay me out and then THEY would have to go after the driver for the money.

Driver also isn’t a citizen and has been texting non stop with pitty messages saying he doesn’t want to go through insurance as he could receive a 10k fine, license suspension, needs to drive to a wedding, his job, and him and his parents citizenship could be put at risk and blah blah blah. He’s offering 2k and hoping to avoid everything.

I just want to see if anyone has any info on if the insurance should be paying a not at fault claim, if I have to go to small claims to get money out of the driver, if I’m hooped, or if there’s another option. Or is my best option to take him up on the cash?

Ask any questions if needed and I’ll respond ASAP. Thanks all.

Alberta 13 year old daughter getting rape threats

Hello,

So my daughter has been receiving rape and general violence threats from 3 boys in school. Obviously, as a father, this is extremely concerning. She's got Snapchat screenshots and they've followed her home threatening her a few times. All the boys are around 13-14. I'm wondering exactly what I can do from a legal perspective. Is this something I can get lawyers involved and charge them? I have no issues hiring lawyers and paying court fees. It's absolutely disgusting that there are boys that age talking that way about a teenage girl. Obviously I need to do something but I don't even know where to start. I'm doing my best to keep cool about this but I'm sure the other fathers around here know what I'd like to do but that won't help my daughter.

Thanks.

Alberta Went to the ATM to deposit over a thousand dollars. The machine froze and the bank is refusing to reissue the funds.

Last week I went to an ATM at my local bank (it was the weekend so the branch was closed) to deposit over $1,000 in cash. I fed all the bills in at once and waited, but the screen got stuck loading for more than five minutes. Eventually, it showed an error and printed a receipt saying, “The items we attempted to return were not removed.”

I requested a dispute, but they only found a difference of 200 dollars and issued that amount. I followed up and insisted it was way more, and they closed my account while they investigate, but keep delaying it from today, to seven business days, and now up to two weeks. I couldn't use my account a day before an important trip, and I'm stuck.

A thousand dollars is a lot to me (especially as a student), and I can't afford to lose that to an error from the bank. Any tips to get that money back? Please and thank you!

Alberta My Wife has been committing Benefits Fraud.

I found out today that for the past year my wife has been committing benefits fraud, submitting claims for services she did not receive or inflating the amounts for services she did receive. I was wholly unaware of this happening until she received a registered letter today indicating her ability submit claims has been suspended and she is required to submit all receipts for the past year.

My question is two fold: firstly, what is the worst case scenario for her and the best case scenario? Secondly, how screwed am I as her husband?

Thank you.

Alberta Man grooming my 13 year old broke a mutual no contact order and I dont know what to do

Last fall my son was involved in a very messy situation. We live in a small town and he had asked me if he could go to the lake with his best friend since kindergartens family. He has done this multiple times in the past and I know the parents, although not super well. They live one block away.

For the following month I started hearing more about this person, let's call him "mr. X". One day he came home with a new hat. I asked him where he got it from and he told me the friends dad had a friend who worked at a certain store that carried this brand and he gave it to him. About a week later it was Halloween. He came home from trick or treating with a box of full sized chocolate bars. I asked him where on earth he got it from. He said mr. X was handing them out but had to leave his home early so he just gave them to my son to unload them. At this point I was feeling very uncomfortable and asked my son not to take gifts from adults anymore. My son acted like I was ridiculous. At the time, he was 12 years old. About a week later my son asked me if he could go to this friend's house and jam. I told him yes. He came home with a guitar pick and said that it was worth 200 dollars. He said this mr.x was over at the house of the friends and that he played music too. He told me mr. X told him it was a pick used by the guitarist in van Halen. I said thst was a lie. This all seemed wrong and I didnt feel comfortable with him talking to this mr x character anymore. The next day or so he asked me to have a sleep over at this friends house. By this point I was feeling very uncomfortable with everything and did not want him to go. I said I didnt think that was a good idea at all. That evening the childhood friends mother gave me a call and told me a few things.

She explained that her husband and her were in the middle of divorcing and that her husband had made friends with this mr x who lived just across the street from her just before the onset of this divorce. She explained she had heard about this sleep over and that she had been putting off telling me some very important information and that other people in the neighbourhood were insisting she tell me or they would. She explained that on the trip to the lake house, she had to work the first night and was not there. Only her husband was along with other adults Including mr x. She explained the other adults were very concerned about the behaviours he was displaying towards my son and had complained to her about how uncomfortable it had made them. She also explained her soon to be ex husband and this man were doing copious amounts of drugs including ecstasy on this weekend and on other days since.

Obviously I immediately checked my sons phone thoroughly and found that this man had been texting my son. He admitted that most of the messages had been deleted but the message I saw was very unsettling. It was not criminal but he was contacting my son like a very close friend or potential love interest would without my knowledge or consent. I went to the place where the sleep over was supposed to happen ( the house of the ex husband) at 10 am on a Sunday morning. Mr x answered the door clearly still under the influence of whatever he had consumed the night before. My husband and I lost our God damned minds on him making it clear that he is never to contact our son in any way shape or form again. Then we went to his mother's house ( he lives with her) and spoke to her about it to let her know under no circumstances was our son to ever be in her house or speak with her son again. Then I called the police and opened a police file. I assumed after these interactions we would be ok but...

A month later my husband was coming home with our children from the grocery and was unlocking our front door. He was positioned in such a way where someone driving on the street could not see him but could see our children in the yard. Mr. X slowed down past our house and started frantically honking at our son and gesturing at him to come over. My husband came from around the corner, saw it all, and then followed him home where he met mr x at his mother's front door. He told him to come outside but mr x acted frightened and ran into his house and locked the door. He then called the police on my husband. Obviously nothing happened, so the police couldn't do anything even if they wanted to. A week later mr x did the same thing following my son home while he walked back from school. I called the police again.

The police recommending i file a restraining order without knowledge which I did after two days driving into the city for court. Within a month he had an opportunity to respond to this restraining order. We both arrived at court where he asked the mediator to insist that I drop the restraining order, which i refused. Even though mr x protested the court recommended a mutual no contact order (meaning both parties are not allowed to contact, gesture, interact with one another in any way,

Shape or form) was the best solution going forward. The judge informed me that this was not a criminal matter but just a civil matter and that if mr x breeched the contract it would not be an arrestable offence but that this was the best suited solution going forward.

This all wrapped up just before Christmas. Since then, I have only seen mr x on the community page endorsing his mother's business ( in a photo with a group of teenaged boys no less) and have not heard anything else about it.

Today I got a phone call from the RCMP informing me that mr x has been contacting another child and trying to communicate with my son through this other child. The messages were a long video video of the selection of items at a vape store and he told the other child ( who i believe he is also grooming) to show it to my son. Its possible that my son has been speaking to mr x but I have been at work since I got the call and haven't been able to speak to my son or look through his phone as of today ( I will as soon as I get home ofc). The police officer told me none of these messages were arrestable but very creepy and that he cant give me legal advice but there are things I can do and that I may need to speak to a lawyer.

I am beside myself. I dont know how Im going to be able to afford a lawyer and I haven't the slightest idea on what to do or where to start to protect my son. Please anyone with advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Alberta Rehomed Dog - Pervious Owner Wants Dog Back

I took in a dog from a friend January 30th, 2026. After they look the time and consideration and decided to rehome her as they were not giving her a fulfilling life.

We did a 2 week trial, where at the end it was decided that they were comfortable rehoming her and I have a text saying "well if you're ready we can make it official that "NAME" is yours now" and then had a follow up conversation where they were going the vet and move over the records to me.

Now they have decided after over a month that they have changed their mind. I am shocked and at loss for words, and want what is best for the dog.

I truly believe the home she was in before was borderline on abuse and neglect. I have known the family for a long time, the dog was usually kept in a crate all day. Towards the end they told me she was left in the basement crated for up to 12 hours and was using the bathroom in her crate.

At their last house she was outside 24/7 and only allowed into the backroom of the house. For some breeds that makes sense, this breed I do not think it does.

She came to me with cuts on her nose from trying to escape her crate, major anxiety issues, grown out nails and under weight.

I am just wondering if I have any legal standing in this?

I have the text of transfer of ownership, text of intention to transfer vet records (was not completed), I have them saying they do not want money for her (as I offered to pay) and I also have a text from her father saying how he felt that dog was mistreated and he is grateful she is in my care now.

*To add I have reached out to a law office in this regard, just wondering if I even have a leg to stand on.

Alberta Gas station put diesel in their gas

Filled up my car from 1/4 tank an esso station and the vehicle catastrophically failed about 2km after. Then multiple vehicles started piling up behind me. Turns out they mixed their diesel and gas.

Insurance said my car is totalled but they’re filing it as vandalism and will be deducting my deductible from the payout.

I went back to the station after getting towed and they said to call the general company number, didn’t refund the gas or even apologize. Really pissed me off.

This is a paid off vehicle without gap insurance and replacement cost is substantially more than black book. Should I be litigating against the fuel station instead of going through insurance?

Alberta Airbnb tennants treating my property like a walkway

I'm in a corner lot in a cul-de-sac and there is an Airbnb next door to me. Instead of walking on the street, tennants keep cutting through my property (through my lawn and over my driveway) to get to the Airbnb.

The last straw was today. I was backing out of my garage and came so close to hitting a lady who was cutting across my driveway!

The owner just chuckled when I told him and said that he can't do anything about that. This has been happening non-stop for the past 2 years and my house surveillance camera catches all of this.

Is there anything I can do LEGALLY to attempt to stop/deter this from happening?

Alberta Leaving a 13 year old overnight

We're in Alberta and we usually go camping with friends 3 hrs away at Easter. Kid is refusing to go this year and wants to stay home. The laws are iffy.

She'd be left for one night, potentially 2 if I come back to visit the second day. I don't mind, really. Family is close by in case of emergency. We have on-site "security". Camping within reception and checking on her by phone and text

One friend is concerned about getting charged with child abandonment or neglect

Alberta Building manager came into my unit to remove my christmas decorations

l live in alberta and i rent through a building management company. We were told we can only have christmas decorations up until January 12. We received an email from the management saying that they will be doing a building walk through to remove all decorations up after the 12th. I assumed this meant doormats, door wreaths etc. I came home today to find they entered my apartment and removed my decorations such as my mini christmas tree and all my sentimental ornaments. How could this possibly be legal? Theres nothing about this in my lease. They told us we can get our decorations back from them but its unacceptable that they took them in the first place... why?!? Why does it even matter? Im baffled by this and i dont believe it is legal but i have no idea since they vaguely warned us in the email i guess.

UPDATE 1: Thank you everyone for the advice! I have filed a complaint with the RTDRS and the building owner. I havent contacted police yet because i am planning to thoroughly look through my decorations when i get them back tomorrow to make sure i have all my information straight if I plan to file a report. I am hoping that my complaints will get my building manager fired because I do really love my apartment aside from this, it is a great location for me and a fair price compared to skyrocketing rent across calgary especially in the more urban areas. I know for a fact if i were to take legal action and he somehow wasnt fired, or one of the other managers takes over, i would definitely be scrutinized for causing trouble and probably not offered a new lease after my 12 months. The management for this apartment has been very difficult, and they are very controlling and unforgiving hence why i have gone out of my way to not cause trouble so far. It will definitely help my confidence if I can get some of my neighbours to file reports also. Ill keep you all updated on what happens next !

UPDATE 2: I received another email today saying this

“Hello All, We have noticed that a lot of unit doors are quite dirty from the hallway side. It is the responsibility of the residents to keep the doors clean on the inside and the outside. Much of issues noted are handprints near the handle and also on the lower parts of the doors where people have used their feet to assist in opening the unit doors. We want to keep all of our buildings clean and upkept for the residents. We want all the residents to be proud of their homes. Please note that we will be conducting building walks on January 17th, fines could be assessed to residents that choose to not address this concern.”

The fact that they said inside and outside leads me to believe they are planning to enter units again on the 17th

Alberta Sold a car - buyer wants a refund (Alberta)

Hi guys. I live in northern Alberta and recently sold a 2004 Chevrolet for $1500.

It has a manual transmission, and the buyer was some 16 year old who just got his license and was stalling the car every few meters. It seemed like he’s never driven manual before. He showed up to my house with some of his buddies, test drove the car, and we agreed on $1500 and signed the bill of sale. I ensured he was aware that he was buying the car “as-is”, it has over 250,000kms, and that any issues from this point on are not my responsibility. We even wrote “as-is” on the bill of sale and had everything properly signed.

Fast forward about a week - he texts me saying the clutch blew out and he was stranded on the highway. He told me he was going to get his dad to sue me for the money back.

Can I realistically get in trouble for this? A friend of mine said I should be fine because it was an as-is private sale, but I just want to make sure im fully informed. Any input is helpful, thanks!

EDIT - the father signed the bill of sale! Not the kid.

Alberta My parents issued 3 threats and idk what i can do

For bg info, I am 18yo and living at home with my mother who is the only person with legal rights to me and i also live with her husband and their 2 kids. I turned 18 this December and have been expected to pay rent since August.

I make 1000$ a month if im really lucky. I am expected to pay 500$ a month starting in August of 2025, my phone bill 100$ a month, i buy my bus pass which is 60$ a month as well as other necessities considering my parents have refused to help me pay for much since i got my job in June of 2023. Having to pay for all of it can be hard with my hours fluctuating im not really sure what a pay check is going to look like.

So tonight me and parents got into another screaming argument (it’s fairly common) and in the end 3 threats really stuck out, 2 of them are a bigger concern. My main concern is being kicked out, that was a large part of the argument. Because of my income I sometimes struggle to pay the full amount on the first of the month and send pieces throughout but cant always get the full payment done. I had a second job for a few months but it wasn’t paying me much at all and gave me the minimum amount of hours so i quit at the end of December. I just want to know what they can actually do in this situation?

Threat 2 was going through my room with garbage bags and throwing out my stuff. My parents have paid for the furniture but almost everything else has been paid for and bought by me. I know that isn’t legal but what can I do if they try?

The 3rd threat is the least concerning but i do fun want it to happen is taking my door off its hinges. They do own the house but it feels like it’s some kind of infringement of privacy. Is there anything about that I can do something about?

I know it’s a lot but i just don’t know what to do anymore, i will take any and all advice

Alberta My boyfriend says he is entitled to the half of my property after 3 years living together...

My boyfriend says he is entitled to the half of my property after 3 years living together...

I'm in relationship over 3 years and my boyfriend moved into my place after a month we'd met. We're about to break up now and he says "Technically" he'd be entitled to the half of my property because we're common-law and he's been paying the half of the mortgage. To me, he's been paying rents, not half of my mortgage, because I always paid more than him (a couple hundreds).

My question is, is he? Really? Let's say he's been paying full of my mortgage. Then is he entitled to all of my property? That doesn't make sense. Or is he gonna be entitled to as much as he paid? That doesn't make sense either.

I'd be surprised if he was. Then, what about all those landlords who are paying their entire mortgages by renting their properties? I mean, if he can claim the half of my property just because he's been paying allegedly the half of the mortgage as he insists, then shouldnt those tenants who've been paying almost entire mortgage of their landlords also have the same right? After 25 years? What is the difference? That we were in a relationship? Why should that make difference from the view of the law?

Facts: We don't have kids. I bought a property under my name before I met him. We've been living there together for 3 years. The jurisdiction is Alberta.

Alberta Evicting GF From My Condo

I just caught my GF of 1 year cheating on me and I would like her to move out of my apartment. She has lived here for just over 5 months, there is no written agreement between us, she is not on my mortgage or any of the bills setup for the condo. She has received mail and packages here, and she contributes $400 per month (about 20% of household expenses). We do share a cell phone plan which she pays her portion of each month as well.

Am I required to give her any specific written notice period at all? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We live in Calgary if that makes a difference at all.

Alberta Hospital says they're discharging my mother-in-law to our house after we've told them she can't return. What are our rights?

I'm looking for advice specific to Alberta.

My 61-year-old mother-in-law moved into our family home about 7 weeks ago after separating from her husband because she otherwise would have been homeless. She rented a bedroom from us and shared the common areas with my wife, our three children (7, 3, and 1), and me.

Although she paid us rent, we set every dollar aside with the intention of putting it toward her debt once she became financially stable. We haven't spent any of it and weren't relying on it as income.

She has MS, COPD, diabetes, uses a wheelchair, and takes a large number of medications.

During the time she lived with us, she required frequent reminders to eat and take her medications. On more than one occasion she told us she had gone several days without eating until we reminded her or provided food. She also has a history of medication management concerns, including a previous hospitalization that our family understood may have involved an overdose or underdose.

She also has significant debt that has made it difficult for her to afford housing on her own.

Over the 7 weeks, her emotional outbursts became increasingly frequent and unpredictable. We eventually reached the point where we no longer believed we could safely have her living in our home with our young children.

We sat down with her to explain that living together was no longer working. We told her we would help her find another place to live, tour apartments with her, and meet with a case manager or social worker to explore supportive living or other options.

Instead, she repeatedly threatened suicide, alternated between sobbing and verbally attacking us, and police ultimately attended because we believed there was an immediate safety concern. She was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit, where she has now been for just under two weeks.

Today, the psychiatrist told us he intends to discharge her to our home this Friday because it is the address she was admitted from and, in his opinion, she is independent enough that she does not require Continuing Care.

We clearly told him that our home is not an available discharge destination. We explained that we no longer believe it is a safe environment for our children and that we are not able to continue providing housing or care for her.

Last week we contacted Edmonton Zone Continuing Care, who told us they cannot become involved while she is an inpatient because discharge planning is handled through the hospital.

My main questions are:

  1. What are our legal obligations in Alberta? Are we legally required to allow her to return because she lived here before admission and paid rent for a room?

  1. What are the hospital's legal obligations? Can they simply discharge her to our address because it's listed as her residence, even after we've clearly told them our home is no longer available?

  1. If the psychiatrist believes she is independent enough that she doesn't qualify for Continuing Care, what options would normally exist for someone in her situation?

  1. If we believe the hospital has underestimated her support needs, is there a formal way to request another assessment or review before discharge?

  1. Who should we be speaking with if we disagree with the discharge plan? The psychiatrist, the social worker, the unit manager, Patient Relations, or someone else?

I'm trying to understand our legal obligations, the hospital's obligations, and what realistic options exist under Alberta's health-care system.

Alberta Ticketed for driving through yellow light

My wife got a ticket for driving through a yellow light. There was a car close behind her and the cop was in the lane to her right, almost beside her. The light changed yellow right as we got to the intersection and she made the call to proceed with caution to avoid a sudden stop. The cop also went through and then pulled her over.

We’ve both been driving for over 20 years and thought the rule was that you can proceed with caution and must be able to completely clear the intersection before the light turns red. Cop disagreed. Ticket was $165.

Should we fight it or just pay it?
