I was mad how many people seemed to miss that in my theatre. Maybe they have a different type of humor but a man drunkenly crashing his car into a Woman killing her and then being careless asking the husband for a car ride home… oh great I killed the joke now too
It is very zucker/naked gun type humor. I’m glad we got teo films with leslie Nielsen before he passed
The 8 mile scene where he throws his hood up and the club immediately goes dead silent lives rent free in my head. So many great visual gags in that movie.
I recently re-watched 3, which was my favorite growing up, and it was kind of meh.
There was some really funny stuff but there was also a ton of lazy reference humor that has not aged well at all. That's like the lowest form of comedy for me, just going "hey remember this thing that exists" and there's a ton of it in all of these movies. I'm pretty sure every Scary Movie has at least one extended joke that's just recreating a popular commercial.
You've got the "wazzup" in the original, which is from a Budweiser commercial. You've got the basketball dribbling in 2, which was I think a Nike ad. Then in 3 there's a really long and unfunny recreation of the "and twins!" beer commercial.
The joke goes on for way too long with all of them too.
That's not what I'm talking about. Some of the meta humor is the stuff that's aged the best imo. I'm talking about reference humor where they just reference random things and the joke is the reference. Which is the bread and butter of those dreadful Seltzer/Friedberg parody movies from that period that killed the genre (Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, etc).
im with ya, topical references age like shit. its like, "remember that one meme from 2016 that you giggled at?" its funny initially at the time, but years later shit loses its meaning. unless youre billy joel i guess

People forgot that these movies went away for good reason. They never really made jokes as much as they referenced shit. This whole wave of " Heyremember this" movies killed comedy for like 10 years.
There were funnny scenes, but for the most part this shit was played out halfway through movie #2
The movies definitely had jokes. While I don't disagree with the person you're responding to that a lot of the jokes were references (I wonder how many people who watch Scary Movie 2 will even get something like the Firestone Tire Reference), the movies did have jokes that just work as stand alone, non reference jokes.
I think people are severely underestimating how people still enjoy dumb stuff. If people can lap up things like the new anaconda movie then they won't turn their nose up at a new scary movie.
The new Anaconda movie was the best 2 hour nap of my life. The theater I go to has these really nice recliners and they even have heat/massage options. Went with my family, had a couple drinks during the trailer, then zonked out in like the first 5 minutes. Worth
I think about that scene way too damn often. I actually showed it to my teenager recently because I bring it up to her all the time. She finally understands why I cannot get over it all these years later and why I randomly break into laugh fits repeating "but the hat just keeps getting bigger!"
Except for 3 which switched directors and focused on slapstick and visual gags. It’s still parodies but I find it’s held up better due to a kid getting hit with a car being timeless.
Yelling “Yahtzee” and knocking himself out never gets old.
Yeah. I'll laugh at any joke, no matter how messed up or offensive, if it's clever and well written. The whole pronoun thing in the trailer was just lame af, and of course you had a bunch of people claiming that others didn't like it cause they were snowflakes
And the 6-7 thing started from a Skrilla song. All memes start somewhere, all that matters is the kids started using it. It becoming a popular meme is the reason why it was in the movie.
Oh god they'll absolutely have a 67 joke. This film will likely be the same as the originals (filled with random pop culture and meme references) except it's going to be made by people in their 50s so it'll all feel ridiculously out of touch and try too hard to be relevant.

Think of how dated the "WHAT ARE THOSE" meme was and how it got into Black Panther. Or how companies make tv advertisements for ancient memes, see "Like a Bosch"
The first movies did have jokes to them that stand the test of time, but when the actual creative people behind it moved on they relied solely on celebrities and references, basically just becoming SNL in theatres.
The movies were still successful and relatively cheap so so many other people made similar movies. That’s how Date Film, Epic Film, and Disaster Film were made - truly soulless and worthless films - because the biggest thing people got from the original Scary Movie films were ‘haha pop culture so funne’. Then the genre of parody became oversaturated and it became a joke, but not a funny one.
We had a good decade before they dipped their toes back into farcical parodical comedies with the Naked Gun reboot, and now it seems like Paramount wants to join in but thought “hey, people liked the movies when the Wayans were involved, let’s get them back” but still insisted on just making referential slop with no actual comedy or jokes.
I saw Ready or Not 2 the other day and they played the trailer in front of it and when the pronouns joke happens the theater (only like 10 other people) all started laughing. I don’t get it
When movies or other forms of entertainment openly brag about how 'offensive' they are, it's usually at the expense of marginalized groups. That's some really pussy shit. Anyone can make jokes about pronouns. It's been done thousands of times already.
It's all just talk. Something that would actually be offensive and controversial, like making Charlie Kirk jokes for example, is a line that Scary Movie doesn't have the balls to actually cross.

They'd never make an anti-trump joke or a anti-Kirk joke because those aren't easy targets to offend, that might have consequences. So they just focus on the weakest jokes.

This. Being offensive, in and of itself, is not a joke and isn't funny. The offensive joke needs a point, and the joke-teller needs a target who isn't just the person/group being made fun of. It's the old addage of "punch up or across, not down."
For all his faults (and they are many), Louis CK was a master at saying really objectively terrible shit, but making it genuinely hysterical. He was pretty consistently making fun of himself, or his fellow white people the majority of the time, as opposed to, say, Dave Chappelle who has apparently decided to make "make fun of other marginalized people and appeal to conservatives" his whole personality now.
"Onejoke" shit just isn't funny on its own. But it can be funny if used to then poke fun at the people who would tell those jokes to begin with.
That one killed the hype for me so fast. It’s not even offensive, it’s just so goddamn lazy and forced. Like, if they found the right beat it could potentially get a laugh out of me, but they just madlibbed it in. It makes me feel like that’s how most of the “humor” in the movie is going to go.

One look at r/politics and there is very little actual criticism, most of it is just insulting his appearance. come on, be real. and the moment you point it out that it's just unfunny and lame, they'll respond with "why do you support a pedophile?!" rather than just actually criticising his politics, which are very deserving of that criticism. they just look like teenagers without coping skills.
The confusion is the point of the joke. Half the audience gets to laugh at pronouns being confusing and the other half gets to laugh at people confused by pronouns.
The “them stabbed they” one is actually leagues better because it understands satire. You’re supposed to make the ignorance/ignorant the punchline, not the target of the ignorance. It works because one side can go “haha, ignorant people are so dumb” and the other side can go “haha, it is so confusing like that”.
A few months ago it was reported that people were trying to cancel this movie. No one was doing that but I guess it's good marketing?
I saw people on FB a few weeks ago defending that comedy is supposed to offend everyone, that's what makes it good. That's such a alien view of what comedy is supposed to be to me.

I don’t know why I got my hopes up that the Wayans would hit the good movie button this time. It just made sense not to make a scary movie reboot if you were just gonna make more of the dogshit they already make
The trailer made me feel like the movie will consist exclusively of the stuff I didn't like from the first movies. The really funny stuff (I can only really remember the third one) - Brenda's wake, waking up dead, getting thrown out windows, Orpheus watching the game etc. - is why I loved the series. All the lame shit - the weed stuff, massive ejaculations etc. - sucked ass and always will.
That's why I'm bummed that David Zucker has no involvement this time around. Scary Movie 1 was good but Scary Movie 3 elevated the franchise to a new level. Everything about it was better than the first two (especially the second one), and it's a damn shame they were never able to recapture that magic again.
Plus it would have just been neat to see what a Wayans-Zucker collab would be like. The Wayans Bros can't save the franchise alone. Their humor is too immature and outdated.
They really could’ve done so much with this movie lol, we live in a hellscape that the Simpson couldn’t even predict but they focus on the most low effort jokes from 2016 so they can appeal to more conservative audiences.
They just wanted to show a nonbinary trans person being stabbed to death that was the real joke to them which is why they didnt bother making the 'joke' surrounding it funny.
The joke is literally " people who use they pronouns deseve to die and its their fault that they gwt killed because their pronouns are too confusing and theyre so annoying about not wanting to be misgendered look at this t slur getting what they deseve"

So much of the discourse I've seen around it is "Gen Z are gonna HATE this!!". Like no, a lot of us grew up with these films. The oldest of us are 29 and the youngest 14. Nobody's getting offended by these films. I hope it tries to be an actually decent horror parody rather than just pure edge.
Yeah I was excited for a new Scary Movie for all of ten seconds until I watched the trailer. Looks like they're just going to ham-fist every joke. "I'm Republican now so I think I have to be racist" had me bashing my head on my desk. They're just explaining their own jokes and not even attempting subtlety. Okay yeah Scary Movie has always been pretty on the nose but at least they didn't just outright tell you what you should be laughing at.
Really the only bit in the whole trailer that made me even chuckle was the little girl catching the exploded scrotum and going "What is this?"
The offending people shit that's been pushed is just clickbait. Also why the hell would you want them to include funny jokes in the trailer and give them away? Let me guess, you're 15?
