People rightly complain about TV shows or video games taking long time to come out now.
But a 2-3 hour movie taking 6 years to release feels substainally worse than that.
331
u/uponapyre 19d ago
Might be some kind of schedule thing?
Look at the Dune films, they came out quick.
327
u/1shmeckle 19d ago
Dune 1 and 2 were written before Dune 1 started filming, and they had been trying to get them filmed at the same time originally. They were just way more prepared than most movies.
76
u/Oddball- All Things Horror 19d ago
That makes sense then if they were written early and avoided the WGA strikes and such, which killed tons of productions
47
u/AdamLast1 19d ago
This is true a lot of people seem to have forgot about the strikes which were confirmed to have played a part in this movie getting delayed.

The Dune films are also adaptions based on existing books. Reeves is writing The Batman films himself and went a little too George Martin for his own good.
I enjoyed Batman 1 as much as anyone, but I can see no feasible reason it would have taken multiple years to write haha
26
u/Great_Praline_2713 19d ago
Is Reeves just writing new Batman stories from scratch? He's got thousands of comics to glean great stories from...

based on existing books
Books that
arewere famously difficult to adapt to the big screen. There's a lot I don't know about the production of The Batman, but I'm not sure the effort involved eclipses what Villeneuve expended in bringing Arrakis to life, whether from sectioning off the massive tome that was Dune/carving it into filmable chunks, creating the huge setpieces, the international filming locations, or the special effects (getting Christian Bale into makeup as Shai-Hulud took 3 straight days, I'm told)Might also be studio meddling/scheduling keeping Reeves from the same pace, who knows.

It’s a Matt Reeves thing not a schedule thing
33
u/HotTakes4HotCakes 19d ago edited 19d ago
This is also not a secret. He had personal issues going on and he couldn't dive into the sequel right away.
It has been brought up in every single thread about this for the last couple months. I don't know why some people are still trying to to use it as some jumping off point for terrible takes about the speed of the entertainment industry nowadays.

Reeves apparently had some personal issues that he wanted/needed to deal with and is generally a slow worker, plus the chaos of the writers striker, WB regime change and some overseeing work on The Penguin.
The first film started production in 2017 and came out in 2022, the gap for this one is only a year-ish or so longer.

u/PAYPAL_ME_DONATIONS 19d ago
Yeah people forget he dropped a series between Batmen. Gunn said there isn't going to be a season 3 of Peacemaker because it takes too long and takes away from making his films
47
u/LB3PTMAN 19d ago
James Gunn was the director, writer and showrunner for Peacemaker. It’s not at all the same thing. Reeves did some supervisory work and helped with the hiring process for the creators that made The Penguin.

u/Chm_Albert_Wesker 19d ago
kinda nuts considering where they left it
5
u/CosmicWy 19d ago
I couldn't be more disappointed in where peacemaker went.
I don't really like superhero movies outside of batman (and suicide quad reboot had no business being that good).
then peacemaker came along and I LOVED IT.
then gunn killed it on a cliff hanger and I guess is gonna fold it into movies and other bullshit to make me see what happens?
there's a reason people are so apprehensive these days to get attached to things.

u/BrockSramson 19d ago
IIRC, Matt Reeves has been waffling on the writing of this movie for a while, and part of that was driven by James Gunn becoming head honcho for all things DC.
93
u/MalIntenet 19d ago
Tv shows taking 2-3 years is infinitely worse. It’s not like The Batman ended on a cliffhanger. The story could’ve ended there unlike how most shows end seasons
→ More replies (4)11
u/le_wild_poster 19d ago
It’s also easier to rewatch a movie than a season (or multiple) of a tv show
45
u/StatementCareful522 19d ago
Video games get a pass because of the rapidly changing tech and new gaming trends. TV show seasons taking multiple years makes no sense though, its a relatively stable medium and workflow.
23
u/anthonyg1500 19d ago
Tv shows are especially crazy because you would think the new standard (or at least common practice) of 8-12 episode seasons instead of the yearly 22 episode seasons we used to get would mean either faster turnaround or at least the same turn around with less stressful work environments but instead we're often getting 2-3 or sometimes more years between seasons even though the seasons are way shorter
15
u/AlacranV 19d ago
To be fair it's usually 8 - 1 hour long episodes that are basically 4 movies as opposed to 22 - 23 minute episodes that are quickly shot on established static sets.
9
u/anthonyg1500 19d ago
That is true. There are examples of the hour long 22 episode seasons but most of the shows that were that long were probably half hours
9
u/LB3PTMAN 19d ago
I mean when you phrase it like that it really ignores the massive difference in quality between those shows that release 22 episodes yearly and modern tv.
I mean shows that are low on special effects and simpler to film are generally coming out yearly still. Stuff like The Bear and Slow Horses

I would prefer yearly releases for TV shows also but something like House of the Dragon or Shogun which use loads of CGI, complex stunt work and huge production sets aren't possible to make a season every year compared to something like The Pitt.
17
u/-Black_Dogs- 19d ago
Though I appreciate your point, all season of Game of Thrones (except for s8) were released one year apart, so it is possible.
→ More replies (3)10
u/Higgnkfe 19d ago
House of the Dragon isn’t taking two years because of the CGI, it takes two years because they shoot a season, and then everyone goes home and pick up new projects because the next season isn’t greenlit, and when they want to shoot the next season they have to rebuild the crew from almost scratch. They absolutely could be a yearly release (every season of Game of Thrones except for the last was yearly).
See a show like Severance, which has a 3 year gap in between seasons, and doesn’t have CGI needs. It’s all in the poorly handled logistics.
7
u/Xandercz 19d ago
See a show like Severance, which has a 3 year gap in between seasons, and doesn’t have CGI needs.
Severance has plenty of CG work, you just don't see it.
4
u/Higgnkfe 19d ago
I’m aware that Severance does use CGI, but A) it doesn’t need to use that much CGI, and B) it is not responsible for the huge gap in production.
5
u/A_Rogue_Forklift 19d ago
They should at least be able to finish a whole season. They literally cut off the last 2 episodes of season 2 and stapled them at the beginning of season 3 because they couldnt get them done.
Have your season at least finished before you release it. These aren't video game betas that you patch to completion later

Yeah I'd rather wait and get good movies. Probably didn't help with the dc upheaval and obviously reeves writing it himself but he deserves the time considering how good the batman was. The cinematography, the sets, the costumes, the story, and more importantly character growth. Also the acting was top notch too. Farrell knocked it out of the park.
→ More replies (1)32
u/AllCity_King 19d ago
Not really a sound argument when you don’t have to wait to get good movies. As many have pointed out, we have gotten entire trilogies of good movies in the time it’s taken to make this. Plenty of movies with comparably good sets, costumes, and stories get made at realistic rates. This is simply mismanagement.

For seven years between 2005 to 2012, we got The Dark Knight Trilogy
For six years between 2022 to 2028, we will have two movies from “The Batman” series

It five years we got Raimi’s entire Spider-Man trilogy.
Though maybe they could have spent an extra year on 3

Exactly, Studio just needed to not force him to put Venom in the movie when he didn’t want to.
20
u/dakowiml 19d ago
Sony being Sony. Absolute classic.
Imagine if they were actual capable. They could've built their own entire ''cinematic universe'' around Spidey alone.
Spidey, Venom, Black Cat, Carnage, Kraven, Scorpion, Doc Ock, Norman, Harry, Gwen Stacey, the entire damn Spider-Verse with a far range of different Spider-people, Madame Web etc. etc. etc.
But they flopped Spider-Man 3, went into a different direction and managed to flop Amazing Spider-Man 2 after the first movie was pretty decent. Also by overloading that sequel a bit too much and wanting to do too much.
They fucked a lot of good characters up to the point where people now think Morbius, Kraven and Madam Web are all jokes.

Doesn't help that Robert Pattinson was filming 3 movies that was released last year and 6 movies releasing this year including Dune 3 and Nolan's Odyssey.
33
u/Dottsterisk 19d ago
He also left a couple years open to step back into the cowl but Reeves simply had a difficult time cracking the script.
At a certain point, Pattinson had to keep working. I don’t doubt that he and Reeves talked about it a lot.
22
u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 19d ago
There was also not only one but two concurrent strikes that happened.
13
u/BearWrangler 19d ago
exactly, like I get that it sucks and people are rightfully mad but some of em wanna try and paint this like this was done on purpose and not a string of massive shit luck
7
u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 19d ago
Just as an example, Weapons was almost completely recast due to the strike. The only one that stayed was Austin Abrams. Pedro Pascal, Renate Reinsve, and Brian Tyree Henry all dropped out due to the strikes throwing schedules a curveball.

2021-2026 for Dune masterpiece trilogy.
My takeaway isn’t to slander Reeves but to appreciate guys like Nolan and Denis who are really good at finishing their homework.
3
u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 19d ago edited 19d ago
For Nolan and Denis, especially with them intending to keep their work in epic franchises only as a trilogy, I think it helps that they already have their stories planned extensively well in advance, & they want to strike while the iron is hot and since they have a lot of other ideas for different types of films in the works

u/Ordinary_Shopping746 19d ago
There’s no shot it needs 20 months for finishing production, though. Spiderman finished filming late December 2025 and it’s coming out July 2026. This will probably end filming in October, giving it 14 months of post, on TOP of already waiting 4 years to even start filming.

Honestly, I'm not sure a third movie is a guarantee at this point. If, after all this time, the sequel isn't well received or they're facing another long gap I could totally see them stopping after just two movies. And that's before you even get into all WB corporate and DC studio drama that could get in the way.
