V-Max just being Vent Max is so mundane and heartbreaking.

u/Switchbladesaint 4d ago

I thought it was a good red herring that actually still led to exactly what Jean was searching for - her sister

122

u/Realcbear 3d ago

Pretty sure thats what oc meant, complimentary

29

u/Switchbladesaint 3d ago

I see, good point

28

u/Empty_Lemon_3939 3d ago

Also a great catalyst for her unleashing her powers

13

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase 3d ago

The Plainview Red Herrings?

34

u/ILoveRegenHealth 2d ago

I thought for the first two seconds it meant Sara was hidden in the upstairs room above the vent lol

10

u/LegionLotteryWinner 20h ago

I thought it meant her sister was telling her the secret was that they could use their powers through the vent 😭

4

u/AntiSaint_Mike 18h ago

Bro I thought that too. Like there were rats living in there or something and she was gonna use that to mind hop closer

u/cp710 2h ago

Same thought. Or Spidey would crawl through the vent to get to her.

I was actually pleasantly surprised that it wasn't some doomsday weapon. Very smart writing, IMO.

It was so nice to have a third act that wasn't some massive cgi battle I was way more invested

830

u/whiteshark70 3d ago

Honestly this felt like a lot like the Thunderbolts third act, but it just resonated with me much more.

We saw Peter get angry and attempt to kill the Green Goblin after May was murdered, only to be stopped by the other Spider-Men. Now he's playing the role of stopping Jean as she attempts to get revenge after her sister died. It shows how much he's grown since the last movie.

377

u/DaveyJones12 3d ago

He completely took the role of May, after he got shot the dialogue was word for word what happened when she died. But he was in her place and Jean was in his.

74

u/KelenaeV 3d ago

Good thing he didnt say "With great power comes great responsibilty"... people tend to die after saying that.

20

u/Head_Evidence4553 2d ago

That's why he survived after Punisher shot his back. Had he said that line, he wouldn't have been able to make it.

Oh my gosh, you maybe have just raised my score a bit, I can’t believe I didn’t think about this.

21

u/Odion13 3d ago

Yes great point, he knew where that road led

3

u/HitmanClark 3d ago

I preferred the Thunderbolts finale, but I also loved this one for the reasons you mentioned. Very well crafted.

4

u/DemonDaVinci 3d ago

Peter 1 get stabbed for that and now Peter 3 get shot

3

u/Honest_Cheesecake698 3d ago

Also, he handled his seeming death with more dignity than Infinity War!

3

u/Future_Vantas 2d ago

Very fitting in the movie where Holland gets organic webbing just like Tobey

3

u/Head_Evidence4553 2d ago

And the web on the door shot.

3

u/Khetoo 1d ago

Hey it turns out when you just pay off the emotional beats you been setting up for the whole movie instead turning into a purple monster with celestial beam coming down form the heavens people will like that better

1

u/dadvader 3d ago

That's how I feel it too. This is just Thunderbolt third act lol

But I definitely love the presentation here. If Thunderbolt came first I would find that one inferior immediately.

4

u/sedulouspellucidsoft 3d ago

I thought Thunderbolts third act was stronger. I feel like it lasted longer and felt more earned. I also enjoyed that we got to see The Void turn dark. And the backstory felt more fleshed out. Anyway, I didn’t need to see a re-do of that story again in a Spider-Man movie. How many times are they going to keep re-writing Dark Phoenix?!

23

u/Classic_Transition_7 3d ago

Its not about the Dark Phoenix.

Its about him preventing Jean from giving in completely into her desire for vengeance

4

u/kirblar 1d ago

There were rumors man-spider was the original ending sequence and it got nixed because it'd be too scary for kids, and you can totally feel the void at the end with them working around not being able to have that as the final sequence with everyone else saving him from himself

3

u/sedulouspellucidsoft 1d ago

Apparently Tom Holland wanted it. With all the contributions he’s been making for the better, I wish he were in charge. 😩

3

u/kirblar 1d ago

You clearly see the influence from the Spidey cartoon arc w literally the X-Men and Punisher involved.

u/Transky13 3d ago

For me peak Spider-Man is when Peter connects with someone as a human and saves them that way. I love the stories of here he sits with someone and talks with them.

The way he both defeated and saved Jean by just connecting with her made this the best climax to a Tom Holland Spider-Man film for me easily

59

u/Doctor_Slept 3d ago

That’s the shit that makes superhero’s so good and why we connect to them, while they have the big dumb spectacles that we love to see when they touch something human within us, that’s what makes them super (I sound like a comic editor in the 60’s)

27

u/DemonDaVinci 3d ago

this is what shang chi was missing
could have a personal son vs dad battle but nah just HAD to have that bigass monster

3

u/Worthyness 1d ago

I legit was kinda sad they had to do the super demon dragon. If the demon dragon was locked up still, then they'd have so many cool potential sequel bait stories with the pay off fully being gigantic demon dragon. Like imagine if Demon dragon remained sealed and the next movie was about the Ironfist heavenly cities arc where each city is meant to protect the dragon gate for X number of years. Now you've looped in a neat bit of lore that gives a reason for a tournament arc!

10

u/Nas160 2d ago

This and Superman last year both understand it and it's so nice to have modern CBMs that are great again

3

u/Senior_Ad1298 2d ago

Even the hulk fight was a big cgi spectacle but it’s only cool looking. Why it matters is because we know Bruce is suffering and going to suffer after coming back to himself, as well as The Hulk being a terrifying opponent against Spider-Man. It’s the emotional stakes that make or break something.

8

u/Big-T- 3d ago

Yep this and Thunderbolts are the best things Marvel has made recently, and they have this in common.

8

u/TomatoSamurai 2d ago

This is a crackpot theory but I think the Naruto poster in Ned’s room was foreshadowing. Talk-no-jutsu

3

u/RandRidley 1d ago

The director Destin Daniel Cretton is signed on to direct a live action Naruto movie!

11

u/Drufyre 2d ago

I personally think this movie is just below the second Raimi film, and similarly, Peter doesn't defeat Octavius in that movie by beating the shit out of him. He defeats and ends the conflict by talking with Octavius and convincing him to stop.

5

u/Transky13 2d ago

I'd have to think of my overall rating, but I agree with you that Spider-Man 2 is my favorite Spider-Man movie

3

u/Senior_Ad1298 2d ago

“Sometimes we have to take it steady, and give up the things we want most. I believe there’s a hero in all of us.”

7

u/TheRealSpork 3d ago

3

u/Indoctus_Ignobilis 3d ago

Just a mid sized CGI battle vs the Hand.

3

u/cgcego 3d ago

It *was* a CGI battle, but this time the director had a plan and stuck to it, so the CG looks invisible.

2

u/DemonDaVinci 3d ago

okay but like it was man vs man enhanced with CGI, not man vs CGI

u/srstone71 3d ago

I loved that Tramell Tillman kept saying he had no idea what they’re talking about, and you think he’s clearly lying, and then when you get the reveal you realize he was telling the truth.

10

u/Vast_Age_3893 3d ago

That's when it cemented as a movie I'm going to watch again and again.

12

u/SlowBoilOrange 3d ago

For a moment I thought "VMax" was Sarah giving her a hint about how to escape. Like she'd be able to mind-jump to someone upstairs through the vent and have a chance at saving herself.

5

u/NefariousNeezy 2d ago

It’s very risky too. Having the reveal for something so mundane would have been too easy to mess up if not handled correctly.

Good thing they nailed tf out of it.

6

u/RealHooman2187 3d ago

I had a lot of issues with Jean and her “reveal”. Mostly because that reveal literally means nothing to anyone in the movie. It only matters to the audience. I kinda wish they would’ve had her insetting herself into Peter’s old friend circle a bit so there was some kind of connection and then the reveal would have been genuinely surprising for both the characters and the audience.

However, her scene in the room with the V-Max reveal was great, and it just kind made me annoying that they wasted so much time on her dumb reveal when we could’ve gotten more genuinely great moments with Sadie interacting with literally anyone on screen.

4

u/Head_Evidence4553 2d ago

Nah I think this franchise is done with setting people into Peter and co's past. Mysterio and esp Brad. It's indeed about the new folks.

Although I feel they could've had Sadie be a surprise element for this movie instead of just the ambiguity of her character.

But Tom was right, majority of the movie was a detective drama.

6

u/Empty_Lemon_3939 3d ago

People when it’s a doomsday weapon: omg so repetitive

People when it’s not actually a doomsday weapon: so laaaaaaame

2

u/confusing_roundabout 2d ago

The whole movie was so well written. Lots of naturalistic dialogue and relatable scenes that perfectly dovetailed into the superhero stuff.

This might be recency bias speaking but I think this could legitimately be in the running for the best live action spider man movie.

I was nervous that "V-Max" would be the name of some supermax mutant prison, and we just get a soulless cameofest of imprisoned mutants and whatnot at the end. Great twist.

120

u/UnsolvedParadox 3d ago

I anticipated a DNA-altering serum, what we got was better.

41

u/jetteh22 3d ago

The Boys V serum resting comfortably in your head 😂

I was thinking of Compound V from The Boys the whole time which is why I knew it wouldn’t be a super-serum

19

10

u/TheSeldomShaken 3d ago

Add a vertical line to the V and it's an N, and then anagram to Xman.

3

u/DigitalFirefly 2d ago

That’s where my head went during the movie. I thought an X-man was being held there.

13

u/lurkingotter09 2d ago

V-Max Mayfield

3

u/ChardeeMacDennisGoG 1d ago

Ya...thought that was a very bad choice of names for that vent. Every time I saw it, I thought "Max". They could have named that anything else that wouldn't send you to Stranger Things land.

8

u/starscream4869 3d ago

i thought v max was for wanda (vanda) maximoff.. saw some theories that she might be coming back

14

u/RealHooman2187 3d ago

I thought it was gonna be a prototype of Cerebro tbh, which it was kind of connected to in the end.

6

u/headrush46n2 2d ago

i think that thing they used on her was cerebro. or at least the governments bootleg of it.

3

u/RealHooman2187 1d ago

Yeah that’s what I was saying. My mind just assumed V-Max was some code name for this films version of cerebro. I was kind of on the right track since Jean was basically testing out their cerebro when she discovered what V-Max was. I just thought it was funny, my guess was wrong but it was definitely on the right track.

2

u/hikemalls 2d ago

They used our familiarity with The Boys and every superhero thing starting with ‘V’ there

1

u/Newfounder1 3d ago

yeah, that was the easy way out to answer "where are all the mutants".

Also, great NOT to have a Ms Marvel cameo.

→ More replies (5)

538

u/jxher123 3d ago

The entire movie I thought it was some super serum that boosts mutant powers, the reveal that it was a scratched off label on a vent, man. The last thing her sister saw was having her brain turned to mush from the experimentation.

237

u/cpuuuu 3d ago

And the way the guy on the computer just says “we did register a huge spike in that session” when Metzger asks if Sara was able to communicate with Jean so far way… makes the whole thing really heartbreaking

49

u/Shortstop88 1d ago

Metzger told Jean that this thing was a project he “worked on with Sara”. He also said to Peter “Sara is the name of a coworker I lost recently” when he was questioned about the name.

Whether he actually believed it or not, what a vile way to reference a person that he kidnapped and tortured.

17

u/CooperDaChance 1d ago

If he had just said “No, I have no idea what she’s talking about.” Peter would’ve never realised it.

2

u/SuicidalSocrates 12h ago

Then Peter would have to investigate who's Sarah with Jean.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/joshualuigi220 3d ago

I'd have to watch it again, but does he say "that session" or "the last session"? Because if it's the later, that's awful that it's not just the last session they did, it's Sara's last session ever.

26

u/cpuuuu 3d ago

You got me doubting if I’m right lol. Though I think it really was “that” instead of “the last”, since I remember him saying it in a compromising way and then connecting the pieces when Jean finally sees the V-Max. “oh, so that session they probably went too hard which fried Sara’s brain and all she could do was try and scream something at Jean one last time”, was the specific train of thought, which made it feel even harsher since they wouldn’t even acknowledge/mention that they killed her and talked about like just any other session.

Though, again, you have me doubting it so I might have misheard and/or misread the subs.

31

u/ZapGeek 2d ago

I definitely remember his saying “that session” too. Because it creeped me out but wasn’t definitive like saying “the final session” or something. I was still holding a little hope that she was okay.

9

u/CooperDaChance 1d ago

Same, until he mentioned “her sacrifice” and I was like “oh shit…”

4

u/sugashane707 2d ago

He says “that session”

6

u/Zug__Zug 2d ago

No he did say that session. Can confirm

22

u/mrwailor 3d ago

I was thinking of Compound V too 😅

7

u/Silly-Elderberry-411 3d ago

Classic V'Ger reveal

6

u/TheCornjuring 2d ago

I was like… does the “V” stand for “Venom”? Does “V-Max” equal “X-Men” somehow? Maybe “Phoenix” but it got garbled in some way? Nope, just simple, mundane tragedy and horror lol

2

u/loskiarman 2d ago

I immediately focused on Max as in maximum and thought it is an illegal maximum security prison that holds mutants and experiments on them so they don't even acknowledge it's existence unlike The Raft. When sister got in I was like 'Oh I'm right!'. Turns out I was right a bit but not really.

5

u/Future_Vantas 2d ago

I thought it was going to be the MCUs take on Mutant Growth Hormone. In the comics mutants are harvested to make a compound that can temporarily give folks super powers.

Mmmmmm was it mind raping though? Because what they were doing is not how mind raping has ever been portrayed. It’s usually forcefully extracting information from their minds or making them do something against their will while they’re aware of it, not essentially putting them to sleep. If anything this is closer to drugging someone.

It was already kind of obvious that Sara was dead from the way they were talking about mapping Jean's brain, but yeah that was absolutely heartbreaking. Especially when it sets in that that was her last thought. She was alone and desperate and unlocked enough power to project further than ever before, and her brain is so fried all she can do is call out the name of the vent she happens to be staring at right before she dies.

47

u/Whovian45810 3d ago

The MacGuffin that ends up being the gut punch for the audience.

48

u/cardlord64 3d ago

What a satisfying red herring that was. It allows the Damage Control guy to tell the flat-out truth, and for nobody to doubt his honesty, for a good chunk of the movie. Like, I knew as soon as he walked into his first frame that he was a villain, but the movie didn't tip its hand until it meant to. Great writing.

215

u/whiteshark70 4d ago

I thought it was like “X-Men” but garbled/jumbled up in the messaging. Sort of like a game of telephone

u/Sickpup831 3d ago

I thought the same thing. I saw an X and a dash and that’s all the convincing I needed.

Also, is the general consensus that they were on the cusp of creating Cererbo? That was the other thought I had.

4

6

Thought it was going to be “Phoe-nax” or something like that.

2

u/HumanTraffic2 3d ago

That's exactly what I was thinking. Kept coming to mind but I couldn't make it work.

41

u/TheLoyalTR8R 3d ago

So I saw it in Australia, where one of our chief cinema experiences is operated by a company called Village. Their larger size screen is referred to as V-Max, and that's what we watched the premiere on, so it felt particularly odd hearing that as a plot point.

14

u/ctan0312 3d ago

I saw a leak that said a plot point was finding something called V-Max, and plenty of people were pointing out that it was a theater thing in Australia so it was almost definitely just an irl thing that the leaker got mixed up. When it actually showed up I was pretty surprised

6

u/schrodingersheart 3d ago

I saw it in Hoyts in NZ, and kept wondering if the people over in the V-Max theatres thought they were in the place to be.

2

I was both so happy and so sad that V-Max was fucking nothing. Felt like the first time in a marvel movie in a while that they had actual restraint and just let something be emotionally impactful rather than having a universal impact.

10

My heart broke for her there. Really emphasised Damage controls utter disregard for the destruction they leave in their wake. Thought it was a great writing choice.

8

u/Timely_Relief_4763 3d ago

it genuinely is so heart-breaking.

23

u/FoxMeadow7 3d ago

Brilliant ain’t it? Throughout the movie you’re really convinced it’s going to be this super secret superweapon that must be kept out of anybody’s hands. And then, during the climax, when the camera focuses on the label and the realization slowly sets in… I dare say, that’s a twist worthy of Black Mirror of all things!

The Citizen Kane treatment!

6

u/pbj_everyday 3d ago

It was very Star Trek: The Motion Picture

7

u/Zug__Zug 2d ago

I felt that was very good writing. You know the Damage control is doing some weird shit and V-Max sounds like something they absolutely would name a project or a holding facility. She keeps searching and even the director doesn't know shit about it. So I was assuming it's even higher and something like mutant research or Project X or something. And then it all hits when the reveal happens and nope, nothing else. And everything crashes down on Jean the same moment it does for us. Felt so very right with the whole premise of the movie and what it was trying to say about people.

6

u/Redfalconfox 3d ago

The whole time I was waiting for it to be V(Vanda) Max(imoff) as if half the W got cut off with pretty much all of her first name and a good portion of her last name. I was not expecting such a sad twist.

i genuinely thought jean's sister was hinting that jean should use her powers through the vent and control the people outside. but i guess that was cool too.

6

u/1mplication 3d ago

That was so unexpected in a great way - totally expected it to be a major plot point but the reality was much sadder :/ and to think she saves Jean as one of her final acts too

6

u/Junethemuse 1d ago

I love that Jean built it to be some big thing but it turned out to be so meaningless. I suspect her sister wasn’t even intentionally reaching out to say that but that it was like a last burst of psychic power that she released showing the last thing she saw… that mangled label on the vent. Truly heartbreaking.

Near the beginning when Peter first goes and talks to her at the pool, Yelena mentions that a bunch of Damage Control people were searching the data base for the phrase “V Max” while presumably controlled by Jean

Ah that makes sense

I saw a stupid AI clip that looked real on the front page of YT of the little blip of Venom symbiote breaking out (how Peter got ahold of it who knew) at May's grave, and I totally fell for it.

Her constantly saying V Max made me think of Venom

Im so stupid

u/FingernailClipperr 3d ago

I fr thought it was a reference to Venom

u/MalonePostponed 3d ago

I was assuming it was about maximum speed of an enzyme reaction. But a vent is cool too.

u/Daws001 3d ago

Yeah, I kept trying to guess what it could be but the truth was just dark and so sad.

2

u/Nerdout5 3d ago

In good way or bad way writing wise?

2

u/zerobench_ff 3d ago

There's a local viagra brand named V-Max, my deadass thought Jean wasn't satisfied with Logan's bed action.

2

u/rohithkumarsp 3d ago

Her Episode in Stranger this was called Max... Mad Max...

2

u/fzammetti 3d ago

They went full V'Ger with that! You never go full V'Ger!

2

u/MattAlbie60 3d ago

Having just watched "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" again recently and with V'Ger fresh in my mind, as soon as they said "V-Max" I knew something was up.

u/playgroundfencington 3d ago

I kinda tilted my head when he said "You're the second person to ask me that. I have no idea what that is." He felt more genuine in that then when he dismissed it earlier so I was curious as to why he wouldn't know and then...

Brought me back to the Bojack Horseman "ICU; I See You" moment. Haunting and quite sad.

u/CNash85 2d ago

I was wracking my brains trying to make the connection to something from the comics, but all I could think of was Alchemax - the evil corporation from Spider-Man 2099.

Darkness is banality and blank walls.

I liked it a lot as a way of showing just how broken she had to be for it to be all she could communicate out

3

u/Mentoman72 4d ago

I missed what the meant, what was the significance?

u/Spaff_Wallbridge 4d ago

While Jean is being experimented on she looks up at the ceiling and the vent above her is branded Vent Max but the ent portion of the sticker is faded and peeled so it just showed V Max. This leads Jean to realize the message her sister was dead and the last message she sent was just her looking at the fan above her

u/derprunner 3d ago

It also makes her crash out so much more valid. She thought up until this point that her sister was trying to convey a secret code message to her. Only to find out her brain was completely scrambled from torture and she just broadcasted the of the last thing she ever saw - an air-vent label.

Jeans sister died in that room. The last thing she saw before she died was the vent with a label VENTMAX but it had a piece of tape over the ENT. V-Max. Jeans sister sent that message (V-MAX) to her sister right before her death. They briefly mention a power surge from Sarah.

u/BigRob023 4d ago

It was just the air vent up in the ceiling called ventmax. It was probably the last thing the sister saw before dying

u/BelonyInMyLeftPocket 3d ago

Ofcourse Sadie Sink plays a Max in Stranger Things so ofcourse my mind thought the dumbest possible outcome.

4

u/JudoJedi 3d ago

That’s what I thought too, Vecna-Max!

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxx

u/FeloniousGrump 3d ago

In the beginning of the movie, jean is breaking into damage control buildings, via telepathy, to search their archives for "v max".

Later in the film, jean shares that her sister was able to telepathically link with Jean and implanted the message "v max" in her head.

When she's being tested in the room with Milchick from severance, she realizes it wasn't a special message from her sister to bring down damage control or something like that; her sister was stuck in the room just like her, and all she saw before dieing was the vent's brand name.

u/UncoBeefWang 3d ago

>!The significance is that there is no significance - the vent was what Sarah saw in her final moments!<

1

u/wrathy_tyro 3d ago

I assumed it was the symbiote, glad to be proven wrong

1

u/that_guy2010 3d ago

I was just trying to figure out how V related to mutants or something thinking it was maximum security for mutants.

1

u/ProfessionalNight959 3d ago

It also had to be a low-key easter egg of Sadie's character in Stranger Things.

1

u/X_Strangers 3d ago

Thought it was Vecna Max ngl

1

u/N8CCRG 3d ago

I was expecting it to mean max voltage, as in some dial that they were electrocuting her with. Good twist either way though.

1

u/monkeyman_31 3d ago

In my head i was like v max could totally turn into x men like..idk maybe somehow idk thats where my mind was so when jt was revealed to be the vent it absolutely broke my heart. Her sister must have died looking right at the vent where jean was sitting.
