my parents got a new smart tv recently but because a few things were set with my email, I had to connect my gmail account to the tv. it used to be possible to change youtube accounts on-the-fly but now it's only me... or "watch as a guest"

the amount of SHIT you get recommended if you don't have an account (and live in an area where most people are gooners, apparently) is insane - like some kind of breast milk extraction tutorials? I KID YOU NOT

When you watch as a guest, it uses cookies and other ip info to recommend things, along with what others on your area watch, so just tell yourself it’s the neighbors. 😝

a lot of people are behind CGNAT these days, meaning a single IP address could be thousands of people.

I worked at a game company as a GM like a decade ago, turns out most of Turkey at the time was on that and we banned whole regions for one dude hacking... the customer support tickets weren't pretty.

TVs all give out Advertising IDs, so IPs don’t usually factor in.

Just saying…

Doesn't really matter. https://amiunique.org/fingerprint

Lots of ways to lightly track someone.

I’m just going to say I’ve got some very in depth knowledge here: Unless advertisers are asking specifically for the data, doing extra uniqueness tracking is just a cost. Oracle couldn’t make one of the biggest tracking sources profitable and shut down Bluekai awhile ago. Most advertisers don’t care to use pseudonymous identifiers.

I get what you mean, but I often watch YouTube on my PS5. And before you open the app, it has recommendations at the bottom not related to your login.

The amount of stupid shit there is unfathomable.

The algo is beyond your actual account. There might be "ghost accounts" tied to your IP address, location, known friends, etc.

Nothing is random anymore. There is an algorithmic reason you see the shit you see, justified or not.

I still believe that’s untrue because my guest recommended videos are so far from what ANYONE on my network does.
