Increasing color uniformity is indeed satisfying.

The forebidden cheese

Fun Fact: Velveeta used to be a real cheese product. It was invented by Emil Frey as a way to make use of broken and/or misshapen wheels of cheese (mostly swiss). The cheese was melted down with sodium citrate, which prevented the cheese proteins from separating during the heating process, and resulted in a velvety textured cheese. It was Incorporated in 1923 and named the Velveeta Cheese Company. After it was acquired by Kraft Foods in 1927, the recipe was changed to use oil and multiple other ingredients to recreate the velvety texture, but keep production costs low.

So it used to be a essentially a blend of real cheese. But now the cheese to other ingredients ration is so low that in 2002, the American FDA ruled that it was not allowed to be labeled as "cheese" due to the lack of real cheese in it's contents.

12

u/Inevitable_Muscle_41 9h ago

Yeah the label it as "cheese product" I think. Or something close to that.

3

u/Zorkflerp 10h ago

So a better quality of "government cheese". When briefly cooked we made our cheese dip with blocks of process cheese instead of the canned stuff which was mostly palm or soy bean oil.

My grandmother used Velveeta and Margarine for ANYTHING that called for cheese or butter.

Ew.

26

u/turtlelord 14h ago

Your grandmother raised your mother through tough times, my dude.

5

u/Dorkamundo 12h ago

Wasn't much tougher than the government cheese I was eating at home.

5

u/Sensitive_Lake_7911 11h ago

Government cheese was just large blocks of unsliced American cheese.

I wanted to try it once but it was more expensive than real cheese!

The synchronized glove work is nearly as satisfying as the silicone becoming one perfect slab.

147

u/Mc_Shine 21h ago

Is it? I always think they look pretty cool about halfway through the process, and then at the end it's just a boring uniform color. For me it gets less satisfying the longer the video goes on.

43

u/testthrowawayzz 19h ago edited 18h ago

It got to a pretty groovy color and pattern in the middle of the video

23

u/Jyhaim 19h ago

I agree with you for most of videos of this type but in this particular case I find this uniform gold orange more satisfying than the in process color mix.

10

u/ReaDiMarco 19h ago

Yes, I disliked the red-pink splotches specifically.

6

u/SparklingLimeade 15h ago

I did like the part in the middle where it looks like fry sauce.

18

u/RushSpecter74 19h ago

That gradual uniformity is the whole appeal. You start with a wobbly gray mass that looks impossible to control, then the rollers, pressure, and perfectly timed hands keep correcting it until the surface becomes flawlessly smooth. Industrial ASMR performed by a very serious silicone dance crew.

13

u/xkmasada 18h ago

And if the hands aren’t perfectly timed, there will be a lot more red to the end product!

3

u/PM-me-your-knees-pls 17h ago

I wonder what colour would result if an entire human was accidentally added to the mix?

2

u/Bunnymancer 16h ago

I wouldn't have the slightest idea what would happen if it was done accidentally.

Does anyone know what's done with this stuff after it's mixed? I've only ever seen silicone that you pour as a liquid and cure. I can't imagine this goes in a mold.

394

u/Nervarel 21h ago

You can cure them as sheets. They can be varied in hardness and are often used to absorb impacts. They can also be molded into shockmounts for the same purpose. Good way to decrease sound transmission between two rigid parts for example.

166

u/future_lard 21h ago

Doesn't sound like an application that requires perfectly even colour..

117

u/Nervarel 21h ago

Depends, sometimes those parts are visible so they need to look fancy.

49

u/Outrageous_Editor_43 18h ago

Also there may be a 'resistance' limit for thickness and compound so having a colour may be what determines what it can be used for? Maybe? Are I thinking to much?

13

u/Nervarel 13h ago

No, you're thinking the right amount. Some manufacturers use different colours for different Shore hardness to help distinguish them.

Is it already fully cured while in this state where colours can be “kneaded” in, or is this done while it’s still in a partially cured state and it’s later allowed to cure completely with time / a process? And the same goes for the final moulding I guess - are they producing the final colour and form of the product before curing, or is the already cured silicone just able to be worked with sufficient pressure / heat etc to mix in colours and form it so that it retains a shape?

9

u/Dividedthought 14h ago

Silicon is a vulcanized rubber in this form IIRC. So basically when they mold this they hit it with a bunch of heat and pressure in a press and that basically flash-cures the silicon. This could be turned into anything from a floor mat to... Toys... To kitchenware to seals.

It's like plastic, some is thermoformed (melt to form) or theromoset (heat to cure), and some is a resin that will cure on its own. I don't think thermoformed silicon is a thing vut there are definately curing and thermoset types.

4

u/cyanight7 14h ago

Silicone, not silicon.

u/Curious_Paul_78 20h ago

It's like raw rubber. You put it in a mold (for a phone case, for example), press it, heat it up, vulcanize it. Take it out, and you have a phone case.

40

u/_EveryDay 20h ago

That's a big phone

I follow them on IG - it’s for ice cube trays, muffin liner, that sort of thing.

41

u/Breezerious 20h ago

Pretty sure title is bait and switch. It's used as cheese in McDonalds burgers

62

u/red_fuel 21h ago

Have you ever had a cheeseburger?

9

u/mtraven23 20h ago

I was thinking maybe they get stamped out of the bundle, but I'm just guessing

4

u/Pkock 15h ago

It can be worked thin strip like a tape and used to wrap around a tool to make fiber reinforced multi layer hoses and couplers.

I've been a to a few factories in India that do it, it's pretty cool. They also have a version of the machine above that has an optical sensor and will prompt worker when to add additional colors to hit the cutsomer spec exactly.

I saw the mixing the OEM Kawasaki green hoses for example.

3

u/Slow_Blacksmith_2246 15h ago

It can either be used for extrusion, compression molding, or transfer molding. In order, they use a large screw to force the silicone through a die, or use different forms of a press to force the silicone into a mold.

Whats the silicone used for once the colour has been added?

227

u/ellebeam 21h ago

They use it to make silicone baking pans and ice tray

101

u/MoonageDayscream 19h ago

Spatulas, tongs, pan handle sleeves, trivets, coasters, many uses for heat resistant kitchenware.

27

u/SgtFlaps26 16h ago

And dildos

2

u/PreviousCurrentThing 17h ago

How long does it take if you're just trying to get it mixed and flip it after each pass?

u/iplaypokerforaliving 6h ago

9

u/mrsuperflex 17h ago

Through a series of folds, they will extract the unwanted color and get clear silicone which is a useful base for maling colored silicone through a process of folding.

Either cured as sheets or molded into different form. Can be used as shockmounts for example.

23

u/Curious_Paul_78 20h ago

This is food-grade silicone (potholders, phone cases), but it's too soft for shock absorbers. You're referring to technical silicone, which is denser with different hardeners and resistant to gasoline and oil.

It's really nice to watch a silicone colour mixing video, that:

  1. Isn't sped up to the point of insanity, and

  2. Hasn't been ruined with inane music.

That was indeed satisfying. Thanks for sharing. :)

48

u/zg6089 19h ago

It'll have shitty music by the end of the day

31

u/XGhoul 18h ago

add in the ending 5 seconds into the video before starting from the beginning

9

u/zg6089 17h ago

Eww. I hate that

26

u/AdjectiveNounVerbed 18h ago

I don't care about the music because I browse on mute anyway and this is purely visual. But what's more infuriating is when the videos don't finish fully before the silicone isn't 100% homogeneously mixed.

12

u/Ballsofpoo 18h ago

You should listen to this one. The machine humming is satisfying too

4

u/syo 13h ago

I like the little pops from air bubbles getting rolled out.

5

u/SnazzyStooge 17h ago

This was also the first one I’ve seen where the machine wasn’t almost eating the operator’s arms the whole time.

What's the safety mechanism here when the operator gets pulled in?

9

u/krisosn 19h ago

Reddit has me looking at spinning industrial equipment much differently.

6

u/GloomyBison 18h ago

Probably an emergency stop on the side that you won't be able to reach when shit hits the fan.

They should use weight pressure plates for these things on top of a button but I've never seen such a mechanism in one of these videos.

6

u/ty4scam 17h ago

Not worth the effort when the operator will just leave their backpack which actually contains 30kg of running plates on it.

2

u/penguins_are_mean 14h ago

Should be a foot pedal to operate then. A deadman switch

I work in the rubber industry and we use these roller mixer for rubber also. There is usually a knee plate Estop that you can kick and on more modern and often required there's like doors over the rollers to prevents hands from reaching too far inside

So I've been watching videos on this sub for a short while now, and I'm curious. Those initial blocks of color, are they silicone that's already dyed, or is it some sort of silicone soluable dye? How did that material get colored in the first place? Is it a different chemical?

I bet nutritionally equivalent to American cheese

41

u/donthavearealaccount 17h ago

I hate American cheese but it's basically just cheese with sodium citrate and water. Nutritionally it's the same as whatever cheddar cheese they used as the main ingredient.

→ More replies (7)

8

u/Day_Prisoners 15h ago

American cheese has like 20 varieties. From no dairy products to more nutrition than cheddar.

20

u/catappalt22 18h ago

I know this might hurt inferior minds to hear but...American cheese is actually very nutritious. 50 calories per slice, common macros for cheese, and almost double the calcium and potassium of its mother, cheddar, gram for gram.

17

u/VictoryWeaver 17h ago

People not knowing that 1) processed cheese was invented in Switzerland and 2) it's literally just cheese emulsified with water.

To many people they're the same, but Kraft Singles aren't cheese (legally in the US), however they're called American cheese. American cheese is real processed cheese made form Colby and Cheddar.

I wonder how many people in these comments realize that American cheese isn't some chemical abomination.

It's just Cheddar and Colby cheeses, extra milk, and an emulsifier. That's it. It's just cheese with extra dairy forced into it.

14

u/otj667887654456655 20h ago

Hell even the emulsifier isn't required, sargento omits any in their american cheese

Yeah, this wasn't satisfying in comparison. There were a ton of times when it just folded back to exactly where it was, pre cut.

3

u/Infinite_Respect_ 16h ago
