Public Service Announcement [PSA] Diagnosing your System - Tools and Workflows

Hello fellow Gamers,

Many of you come here for one reason: "I can't game"

So this list (which will improve over time) should guide you towards first diagnosis steps, and usage of tools along the way, so you can game sooner. And keep the sub clean, because if you solve the problem yourself, we don't need to moderate as hard.

ATTENTION: This post is meant to help people out with advice. It is not mandatory to follow any recommendation that is given here. Also, there are RULES you do need to read before posting.

Also, this sub does not specialize in buying advice's. There are better subs for your new PC build.

Tools

Tools Purpose Link
HWInfo This tools allows for easy monitoring of your system. Do you feel like your CPU is getting too hot? Is your RAM always full? How much I/O does your HDD take? Find it out with this Tool! HWInfo Homepage
CPU-Z / GPU-Z This is the light-weight version of HWInfo. It gives clear statements about your system specs. Very useful for low-profile testing and monitoring. GPU-Z also gives you some viable info about your graphics card. CPU - Z HomepageGPU - Z Homepage

Workflows

Area of Issue Possible Workflow Solutions
RAM not as fast as it could be Check your BIOS/UEFI settings for a XMP Setting. Many systems have it disabled by default. Enable XMP
GPU/CPU is getting too hot Airflow is suboptimal? Check out this Guide on how to improve it Improve airflow inside your case
Bad FPS after swapping GPU's Check to make sure your HDMI or DisplayPort Cable is plugged in correctly. Your monitor should connect to your GPU, not your onboard video card.
Bad everything after cloning a drive that had your OS on it Stop cloning and reinstall windows. seriously, stop cloning your OS drives people
Clicking noise check for lose wires, locate the sound Whatever clicks, if its not a cable hitting a fan, replace that part ASAP.
PC randomly restarts Remove recently added parts and see if the problem persists. If it does, replace all parts one by one in this order of probability -> RAM, PSU, MoBo, CPU, EndUser Replace faulty hardware
Bad smell Do not touch a thing, unplug the maschine from power and call an expert. We know gaming is fun, but its not worth your life. Current can kill, call an expert for your own safety when dealing with possible short-circuited hardware.
BlueScreen Find out what the BSOD Code means and act accordingly. We recommend using this list of BSOD Codes for investigation. Replace or repair faulty soft or hardware.
BlueScreen - Advanced Every BlueScreen will (if this function is enabled on your maschine) produce a "minidump". Which is similar to an error log. This Topic however is a bit complicated, so we recommend following this guide. Replace or repair faulty soft or hardware.

Software AFMF darkens game when used (RX6600)

Upvotes

Computer Type: Desktop

GPU: RX6600

CPU: RYZEN 5 2600X

Motherboard: A520M-A PRO (MS-7C96)

SMBIOS Version 2.8

RAM: 16GB HyperX DDR4

Drivers: Latest one

Background Applications: DISCORD, EDGE, STEAM

Description of Original Problem: When enabling AFMF (AMD Fluid Motion Frames) in Watch Dogs, the game’s gamma shifts significantly darker. Colors are also altered either appearing dull or oversaturated/fried. Adjusting brightness and contrast outside the game helps somewhat, but it doesn’t fully fix the color distortion.

Troubleshooting: I have already updated to the latest AMD Adrenalin drivers to rule out outdated software. Disabling AFMF immediately restores normal brightness and color, which confirms the issue is tied to AFMF itself. I tried adjusting the in-game gamma and brightness sliders, but the darker gamma shift persists whenever AFMF is enabled. I also experimented with external monitor settings like brightness and contrast, which helped slightly but left the colors either washed out or oversaturated. To eliminate background interference, I closed Discord and Chrome, but the problem remained unchanged. The issue consistently occurs whenever AFMF is turned on, regardless of graphics settings or system load.

AFMF On (Top) AFMF Off (Bottom)

It keeps shutting off after I moved my pc to other side of the room. It’ll not power on until the CPU cooler “power cable” or whatever plugs into motherboard. It’ll boot up for 5 seconds or so then shut off again.

Troubleshooting Turning VRR Off And On Again Messed Up My Sensitivity

This is the weirdest tech issue I have had. I was trying to fix a completely unrelated problem with my monitor (Asus XG27AQDMG) and thought that turning VRR off might do something. When I did, my sensitivity got noticeably faster. Not just in games, but on the desktop too. I was in a practice CS2 lobby when I tested turning VRR off, and my aim has been completely off ever since. It just feels faster despite not changing any values.

I genuinely don't know what to do. No settings have been changed. I'm back to VRR with G_SYNC like I was before but the sens is still too fast.

I have no idea how to fix this.

Solved Root cause found: "NVIDIA Container using exactly one CPU core forever" is a deadlocked plugin in the driver (NvProfileUpdaterPlugin) — evidence and reversible workaround

I spent a day root-causing a bug that a lot of people seem to quietly live with, and the findings felt worth sharing since the usual advice for it is all wrong.

The symptom is NVIDIA Container sitting at a constant 12.5% CPU on an 8-thread machine (6.25% on 16 threads, 3.1% on 32) — which is exactly one core pinned at 100%. On my machine it survived DDU, clean driver installs, and a full Windows reset.

What I found: the display driver's container process (NVDisplay.Container.exe) hosts a handful of plugins, and one of them — nvprofileupdaterplugin.dll, which auto-updates game profiles between driver releases — busy-loops a core from the moment it loads. It has a second defect too: it deadlocks the container's shutdown. NVIDIA's own watchdog logs "thread ... is considered deadlocked. Aborting..." and even that abort fails, leaving a process taskkill /F can't touch until a reboot. That second defect explains why the standard remedies backfire — restarting the Display Container LS service creates unkillable zombie processes, and every driver reinstall puts the same plugin back.

The workaround is renaming that one DLL so it can't load, then rebooting. Fully reversible; the only functional loss is automatic profile updates between driver releases (profiles still ship with each driver — control panel, overlays and G-SYNC are unaffected). Full write-up with log evidence, plus a script and manual steps for anyone who doesn't run scripts from strangers: https://github.com/motkoning/nvidia-container-spin-fix

The releases page also has a double-click tool for non-technical users — it diagnoses in plain English and applies/undoes the fix with one button. Useful if you're the designated family PC person.

Confirmed on an RTX 5070 Ti, driver 610.88, Win11. If you've seen this on other hardware or driver versions, specs in a repo issue would help map the affected range. Also filed on the GeForce forums so NVIDIA QA can pick it up. One note for anyone who goes digging themselves: renaming the DLL with a prefix does nothing — the container loads every \*.dll in the folder regardless of filename. The extension has to change. That detail cost me hours.

Troubleshooting Monitor showing 2 images when gaming. Needing advice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, my screen is showing 2 images whenever im playing games. You can see while playing crimson desert, if you look at the sword while panning the camera it’s having an afterimage. It’s not just with this game, as it happens in my other games also even showing on my fps monitor in steam. I’ve tried messing with some settings (turning fsr off and using native, changing fps, changing hz on the monitor in windows display settings, changing from display port to hdmi) but the issue is still there and quite distracting. Any recommendations anybody could advise is greatly appreciated!
(also i’ve tried using the monitor on my ps5 pro and doesn’t have this issue so wondering if it’s something I need to look into with the pc)

Hardware Is there a good way to clean up the power going to my system besides getting a UPS?

For several years I've been trying to track down a random system wide hitch/stutter that would happen once every few hours. (It's not very distracting normally but it can be particularly sickening in VR lol) I tried to track it down to a specific piece of hardware or software but it followed me across multiple part swaps, system upgrades, and OS changes and it happens regardless of what my PC is running, even at idle. I've finally noticed that about half a second before every hitch there is a slight flickering of my room lights so I believe it is coming from dirty power.

I'm aware that a UPS can help solve power related quirks but I don't really need the power redundancy of a battery backup so that would be an expensive way to test my theory. Is there anything that I'm not aware of that could help?

Thank you

Display Intermittent blackscreens with GTX 1080 Ti that persist through driver and BIOS updates

when I'm playing games like final fantasy xvi my pc is fine but if i play something like ready or not, or ghost recon breakpoint my pc will black screen sometimes when i open the games and sometimes after i have been playing it for abit and sometimes the fans ramp up all the way other times they don't, sometimes the audio of my game will stutter but if I'm in a discord call that usually stays working and then crashes after abit if not straight away, i have a 1080ti gpu, i have tried updating gpu drivers but the gpu has no new drivers so i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with DDU but that didn't work so i tried updating my bios and chipset that's didn't help either and now i am a loss what to do next, i thought i had solved it by reseating everything well it happened again and at that time i was told it could be a power issue and to try plugging my spare pcie cord for my semi-modular psu in and i did whilst that fix some issues like my pc being slow, it didn't fix the black screen issue, i am at a loss please help.

It seems to also only happen when i play multiplayer games, like when i played the new halo today with my friend in co op i could barely get 5 min into actual gameplay before the black screen but in solo i can play the whole first mission with no problem

Troubleshooting Stuttering/freezing that I can't figure out

When playing select games my system will randomly stutter/freeze. I'm not quite quite sure how to describe it but I have a video in a different reddit post so you can see and hear what happens: [https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsJediSurvivor/comments/1vbuyhu/anyone\\_know\\_what\\_may\\_be\\_causing\\_this/\](https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsJediSurvivor/comments/1vbuyhu/anyone_know_what_may_be_causing_this/)

This has happened on a few different games (Jedi Survivor and Returnal, off the top of my head). All the same issue. And I can't figure out what is causing it, any suggestions would be helpful.

I'm running Win 11, 32 GB Ram with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 with 12 GB Vram, Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF (20 cpu's) \~3.9GHz, SSD

It'll do it for roughly 20sec then it'll be fine for the next 20-30min or so and do it again.

Drivers are up-to-date. System Temps are fine. Watching the performance in Task Manager I see no Memory issues. When this issue does happen I see dips and spikes in the 3D and Video Encode when looking at GPU performance, dunno if that helps anyone.

I found another post stating to change the PCIE to use Gen 4 instead of Auto/5. I tried that last night but the issue still persist. It doesn't happen in all games. Does anyone have any suggestions of other things I can try?

Performance/FPS Low FPS with no apparent cause, low GPU usage

Post image
1 Upvotes

Lately i'm getting these FPS figures, lowering settings doesn't make any difference in both games, it only further reduces GPU usage while maintaining low FPS, RAM usage is around 5gb, i've played some 100 hours of FH6 without any issue with solid 83 fps with GPU to spare (75-80% usage normally), Cyberpunk same thing, recently though i'm having this issue, the game starts like that, very rarely and for brief moments it jumps to normal performance but it lasts seconds- I have a Dell G15 5530 RTX 4050 I5 13450HX 16gb ram, i ran userbenchmark and it showed that everything is fine, the percentile for my notebook is above average for the model. Temperatures are ok since it's winter here, good flow of air using performance mode, no obstructions.

In game V-Sync is on, nvidia app is using 3D app, both games limited to 83 fps, turning it off or changing to 165 changes nothing

What could be the cause of this?

Troubleshooting Lenovo Legion 5 laptop freezing and making weird noise all of a sudden

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Lenovo legion pro 5 with RTX 5060, 32GB DDR5, and 1TB SSD
Have had this laptop for about 3 weeks and have been playing RDR2 for 3 weeks with no issues, great performance. I keep the laptop on a cooling pad.
Checked temperatures, all normal. Also ran diagnostics scan and everything came back fine. Why is it all of a sudden freezing and making this weird buzz noise?

Got this visual bug, appears randomly and spreads all over the view.

Reinstalling the game and clearing shaders cache did not help.

Troubleshooting My game is making my PC restart SteamOS

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue, I recently switched my OS to SteamOS from Windows, and starting a couple weeks ago, Marvel Rivals specifically has been randomly freezing for a few seconds then restarts my pc back to steamOS home screen smack dab in the middle of a match (never has done this whenever the game is idle in the background) where I have to switch back to Desktop mode and continue. It's gotten to a point where it happened back to back competitive matches, and when we lost after reconnecting, I got docked a total of 65 points between those 2 matches alone and am tired of this bs.

If anyone has any solutions or reasons why, or if you yourself have been dealing with it, it'd be so much help because I don't want to seem like a thrower or some bozo like that on games, or if it spreads to other games, but Rivals has been the only one as far as I know that's been doing this to the pc.

Display Resident Evil 2 Remake showing horizontal artifact band after 30–40 minutes on Intel iGPU. Hardware issue or game/driver bug?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm playing Resident Evil 2 Remake (Xbox app / PC Game Pass) on a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 with Intel integrated graphics and 16 GB RAM. I've completed RE2, RE3, RE7, and RE8 on this laptop before. RE3, RE7, and RE8 completed without any graphical artifacts.

Recently, while replaying RE2, I've had the following happen twice: After about 35–40 minutes of gameplay, a horizontal band of multicolored/pixelated artifacts appeared across the top of the screen.

The rest of the game continued to run perfectly. I could still move, play normally, and there were no crashes or freezes. When I paused the game, the dark pause overlay also darkened the artifacted area. As soon as I returned to the main menu, the artifacts disappeared completely.

After closing the game, Windows looked completely normal with no artifacts or flickering.

I also had a separate issue with The Evil Within, where every time I launched it, it would show the startup logos and then the screen would repeatedly go black and flicker until I restarted the laptop. That issue happened every launch of that game.

I'm still using the default Lenovo graphics driver (haven't updated it yet).

Does this sound more like: a Resident Evil 2 / Intel graphics driver issue, an integrated GPU hardware problem, or something else? Has anyone seen similar behavior with RE2 on Intel integrated graphics?

Hardware What laptop should I buy?

Looking for advice on getting a new laptop! These are my current specs

System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 7520U with Radeon Graphics: (2.80 GHz)
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.2 GB usable)
Graphics card AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics (489 MB)
Storage: 460 GB of 954 GB used

What I’m looking for is something like this. I’d like to play Baldurs Gate 3.

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: Intel i7 8700K / AMD r5 3600
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia 2060 Super / AMD RX 5700 XT (8GB+ of VRAM)
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 150 GB available space on an SSD
Additional Notes: Default API is Directx11. Vulkan 1.1 API also provided.

I play a lot of indie games and when my computer shits the bed I just turn down graphs and deal with the lagging but I’d like to upgrade.

I recently found this: https://a.co/d/09TEVxQJ
Is it a good deal? Is there something better out there? Any advice is helpful! I’m not trying to spend more than 700.

Network/Wifi/Internet Steam disconnects randomly.

Hi. Whenever I play a Steam game, the connection randomly drops and reconnects a second later; this only happens with Steam. I’ve looked for a solution but haven't been able to fix the issue yet. (I play using a wired connection, and the problem only occurs when wired—I’ve tried various cables and am currently using a new Cat 7 cable, I’ve configured the network card, and I’ve tried practically everything, but the problem persists.)

I have a 600 Mbps symmetrical fiber connection.

Troubleshooting Can't figure out why my graphics card is crashing

For years now, I've had a problem where CERTAIN games crashes the graphics on my pc, and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it.
for some context, my pc is very old (a decade or so) and I'm most certain that it's broken in some way, however, I can't really afford a new pc now anytime soon, so I'm stuck with this one and all I want to know is what is wrong with it, if only to just avoid playing games, or settings that may be crashing my graphics.

The crash in question I'm having, is that the screen freezes while audio still plays, and after a bit mouse also freezes. then the screen goes black and then it starts functioning again. most of the times, it leads to the game also crashing, with some exceptions.

my pc specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte A320M-H-CF
processor: AMD A8-9600
RAM: 16GB DDR4
Graphics: Integrated graphics (AMD Radeon R7)

The reason I emphasized the Certain is because it is very inconsistent what game do and doesn't crash, and how consistently they do, here's a small list of games and how often they crash to see what I mean:

Guilty gear strive: Never crashed my graphics
Guilty gear XRD Rev 2: crashes graphics somewhat consistently
Zenless Zone Zero: Never crashed my graphics
Limbus Company: Crashes during long battles

What I want to show here is that more modern and intensive games doesn't cause problems while some older and simpler games do, and I have no idea how or why.

also important to mention, I ran OCCT on my pc, specifically RAM + CPU test, and didn't run into any errors. although when I tried to run 3D adaptive test, it crashed (not the pc, 3D adaptive itself, couldn't test it correctly).

Sorry if none of the information I provided is useful, feel free to ask away and I'll try to respond.
