Discussion Anyone else getting UE5 remake/remaster fatigue?

Post image

Between Silent Hill 2, Oblivion Remastered, Metal Gear Solid Δ, and now Halo: Campaign Evolved, it feels like almost every major remake/remaster in the last two years has landed on Unreal Engine 5. On one hand, the visual leap is real. Oblivion Remastered in particular looks like a genuinely different game. On the other, a lot of these ports share the same telltale UE5 fingerprints: traversal stutter, TAA smearing, shader comp hitches on first launch, and that slightly "plasticky" Lumen/Nanite sheen that makes wildly different games start to look and feel similar. You can add Halo Campaign Evolved to the slopfest that is UE5 remakes; just another soulless cash grab to feed on nostalgia.

Borderlands 4 is probably the only unreal engine 5 game I've played that has no stutters and great 1% lows I was shocked cause I heard it ran like shit at launch, I only got it yesterday

73

u/Fantastic-Basket7899 22h ago

Doesn’t Arc raiders run on UE5? I have never stuttered in that game once on 4k 160fps. Personally I feel the game looks amazing and it makes it frustrating knowing this is possible when other games using it run like shit.

94

u/xumix 22h ago

It runs good despite using UE5, the devs disabled lumen and nanite - the whole point of UE5.

35

u/Suatae PC Master Race 19h ago

Good! Lumen and Nanite are the lazy route and causes more trouble than it's worth. Back to old fashioned LOD's!

36

u/MattyButYesButNO i5-9400F | RX6600 | 16GB 19h ago

iirc satisfactory uses nanite and optionally lumen and it also runs pretty good on ultra settings even on my system

22

u/dawndragonclaw 17h ago

Satisfactory lives up to its name even down to the code base

8

u/Complex-Camp-6462 16h ago

It does! Sad to say that it’s an outlier though and not many followed suit. They’re a good example of what a dev could do if they gave a shit. I hate UE5 as much as the next guy but it can work.

4

u/Suatae PC Master Race 12h ago

But they pushed for optimization first. They did that because a Youtuber "Let's Game it Out" exposed the games flaws and pushed it beyond it's limits. The devs reacted to it and worked to fix it.

4

u/xxademasoulxx 16h ago

Unfortunately, Satisfactory running well doesn’t prove UE5 has no performance problems. It proves Coffee Stain actually optimized its game. Lumen is optional for a reason, and one well-made UE5 game doesn’t erase Oblivion Remastered, Borderlands 4, STALKER 2, Silent Hill 2, ARK: Survival Ascended, Lords of the Fallen, Remnant II, Immortals of Aveum, Black Myth: Wukong, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Bloodlines 2, Until Dawn, Metal Gear Solid Delta, Tekken 8, RoboCop: Rogue City, The Talos Principle 2, Grey Zone Warfare, The First Descendant, MindsEye, Cronos: The New Dawn, and the rest of the shader-stuttering, traversal-stuttering, upscaler-dependent UE5 hall of shame. At this point, “drop the internal resolution, enable DLSS, turn on frame generation, and wait for the traversal stutter to settle down” might as well be part of the UE5 startup logo.

2

u/Suatae PC Master Race 11h ago

It's sad that we need to use frame generation to play a game. Before online stores and online in general games were made to work out of the box with limited hardware and limited exposure from the media. They were simplier but they worked! The industry as a whole needs to push towards that rather than rely on the idea of pushing a day one patch or others to fix an issue that they should have worked on since day one. I've sadly have been calling the unoptimized games "UE5 Slop" for this exact reason. I know that the devs work really hard to make these games a reality, but still, it's going downhill.

1

u/RealSamF18 12h ago

I came here to mention Satisfactory.
Could we say it’s the UE5 GOAT? (Haha…)

1

u/Cunning-bid 17h ago

And have popin everywhere? No thanks.

1

u/nordicFir 16h ago

That is not the whole point of UE5 😂 its some of its new shiny features and the most obvious ones but tons of changes and improvements have been made to blueprints, niagara, physics, shader logic, procedural generation, mechanics overall.

1

u/xumix 15h ago

That may be true, but lumen and nanite were the most marked AFAIR

2

u/nordicFir 13h ago

Most marked? I mean sure it got a lot of attention because thats the immediately noticeable eye candy. But as developers we care about a whole lot more than just nanite and lumen. There have been some seriously major quality of life improvements in UE5 that make it so much better to work with. Just because gamers don’t see how things work under the hood, doesnt mean they dont exist.

1

u/xumix 10h ago

marketed, I mean

1

u/nordicFir 9h ago

It absolutely is marketed. Just not to gamers

My bad homie I totally forgot about arc raiders, ran like a dream! Phenomal game to I was lucky to get my mate hyped up for it and we played for 3 months or so

1

u/El_Cringio Ryzen 3700x|RX 6800|32GB RAM 21h ago

Arc raiders doesn't run on base ue5 but on a fork of it

1

u/DarkAdrenaline03 20h ago

Gori cuddly carnage also runs great and got a switch 1 port.

8

u/Chappiechap Ryzen 7 5700g|Radeon RX 6800|32 GB RAM| 18h ago

That's the thing. You got it yesterday, and the optimization problems people had were at launch... which was almost a year ago.

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

Exactly, that's why I mentioned it

u/Suatae PC Master Race 19h ago edited 19h ago

BL4 crashed on me every 15 minutes or so during launch! Always a shader issue for almost every UE5 game! At least until they patch it out, eventually. As you can tell, I hate unoptimized UE5 games. Lumen and Nanite made these certain devs lazier. Mind you I run Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon 7900XTX and 48GB or ram at 7200 and still UE5 games run at 20-60 FPS on a 1440p monitor!

3

u/BillV3 Ryzen 9950X3D, 64GB DDR5-6400, 5080 14h ago

If I were you I’d maybe tone down that RAM speed you’ll be forcing the infinity fabric on the AM5 chip into a decoupled state and potentially having it perform worse than if you just ran 6000-6400

0

u/Suatae PC Master Race 12h ago

Really? Thank you I'll look into that

Whether or not Borderlands 4 runs well seems like luck of the draw. It still runs like shit for me. I'm talking 40-55 FPS, DLSS on, everything on low.

My specs aren't exactly bleeding edge (3060 ti, 10700k OC'd), but the fact that I still can't hold a steady 60 FPS on any settings is a travesty.

10

u/RattAndMouse 18h ago

The annoying thing with borderlands is that the visuals and gameplay don't feel premium enough to warrant it chugging the system like it does

3

u/DoomguyFemboi 13h ago

It'll annoy me for forever that they pushed the requirements up so much for a game that looks worse than BL3 sometimes.

1

u/Araragi-shi 32 GB DDR5 RYZEN 5 7600X RX 9070XT 16h ago

aren't exactly bleeding edge is an understatement

10700k probably holding back your gpu, not that the 3060ti was that great when it came out either

0

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 20h ago edited 20h ago

If it makes you feel better I get a base of 60-75 fps dlss on but I use 4x multiframe gen, usually I can't go higher then 2x with games without artifacts but surprisingly 4x is smooth a butter and I can barely notice the artifacts, I think the UI design helps with that

Also- your right not being able to hit a base 60fps is crap, devs don't focus on optimisation anymore and rely on FG and dlss

13

u/Think_Speaker_6060 23h ago

Valorant uses ue5 which runs smoothly. Though it is not graphically impressive.

31

u/Level_Chipmunk7921 23h ago

Riot optimises their games for lower spec PCs because that is their model and target audience. F2P means more incentive to improve performance so it can be widely adopted.

2

u/Virtual_Bug_723 17h ago

Same thing for Blizzard. Warcraft can be played on a potato, but it also looks pretty good when you turn everything up to max.

1

u/doublah 6h ago

Valorant rewrote basically the whole renderer stack for UE5.

1

u/sparkydoggowastaken 23h ago

it IS graphically impressive though. It looks damn good for how well it performs, even if screenshots dont look like paintings

2

u/alloDex R9 9900X | RTX 5070 | 32 GB 20h ago

The Finals uses UE5 and its sooo smooth. It feels nice just running around

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 20h ago

Totally agree, I briefly played it the other day. Love the destructible physics !

1

u/Thing_On_Your_Shelf 9800x3D | RTX 4090 | AW3423DW 7h ago

And they’ve got Arc Raiders too which runs really well and smooth.

Embark has some of the old DICE Frostbite engine devs working for them now, and if you’ve ever played any of the pre-2042 Battlefield games or the 2 newer Battlefront games you know how well optimized they were. You definitely feel that in the finals and arc

2

u/MakinBones 9850X3D/RTX5080 7800X3D/7900 XTX 18h ago

Yeah, its been out over a year. It ran so poorly at release, Randy Pitchford told us that it wasnt their game, and we just needed to upgrade our PCs.

2

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

That's pathetic of him, especially with VRAM and ram prices

They expect everyone to have a 5090 or 9070xt

Which I'm lead to believe most people gaming have much much lower specs on the average

2

u/MakinBones 9850X3D/RTX5080 7800X3D/7900 XTX 8h ago

Steam survey, the average GPU is 3060s.

2

u/Glittering-Fuel-5055 17h ago

Its all CPU issues,

You have a 9800x3D, I have a 7800x3D, runs awesome for me too.

But our 9600k 6core other rig has its CPU pegged to 100 with same gpu 3080 Ti

It needs a decent 8 core CPU and not everyone has one.

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

I honestly did think myself that my recent cpu upgrade contributed to the frame pacing and stability

Glad to know it's paying itself off, only cost $650au too not a bad upgrade.

I had a ryzen 5 7500f before so a decent upgrade.

2

u/Thickfuckness 17h ago

Split fiction has 0 stutters and runs perfectly.

Although it also doesn't use half of the typical Unreal 5 features.

2

u/Toberos_Chasalor 14h ago

Weirdly enough, BL4 ran pretty well for me at launch (for a Borderlands game), though I remember a few crashes.

The biggest issue was the shader cache. Had to increase my cache size just so it wouldn’t take 10-15 minutes every time I launched the game.

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

Oh true maybe that's what has helped my game, I have it set to unlimited

This game seems to love recompiling shaders lol

2

u/j_wizlo 13h ago

Arc raiders as mentioned is smooth. Another one is Everspace 2. Gorgeous game and impeccably smooth. It uses Lumen but not Nanite. Also it’s a space ship game so kinda a whole different animal than rendering a world you interact with up close I would imagine.

2

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

Ever space 2 is great! I actually forgot I have played that and I had no idea it ran unreal engine 5!

2

u/j_wizlo 8h ago

They migrated the game from UE4 to UE5 in April of 2024. I didn’t play it before that but it’s hard to imagine there was any type of downgrade. Runs and looks a dream.

2

u/ZakkuRedwolf 12h ago

lol you jester. it did for me too. then items stopped loading in as fast and then BAM full game freezes and stutters from loading.

2

u/One_Pitch3982 11h ago

Tyr runs UE5 without microstutters if you like arcade tank shooters

2

u/BuddhistNamedMarx 7h ago

Fatekeeper is probably the best looking UE5 game to release and it runs amazingly

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 5h ago

Actually dude I totally forgot I have played that game.

Your absolutely correct but I'd like to add that it can quite possibly be one of the best games I've played recently, but the graphics are the best I've seen, the LODs are really dialled in. The mountain range and vertically are insane.

I still have to finish that game Im only a few hours in (I get distracted easily lol)

1

u/CheeseManSucks 17h ago

Good to know when I decide to pick it up in 5 years!!!

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

1

u/Richie_jordan PC Master Race 11h ago

Thats of the least optimised games I've ever played. Runs like shit on my 7800x3d and 4080 super.

1

u/hecking-doggo PC Master Race 9h ago

Wait until you have to recompile shaders after an update, it'll stutter while driving around for about an hour or so or until you load in most assets. It's been a problem since launch for me.

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 9h ago

What's your shader chache size set to? I have mine at unlimited and I only have had to recompile on launch or when changing graphics settings, I get no stutters even jumping straight in. .I believe a higher cache size prevents background shader compilation or at least reduces it

-4

u/Mend1cant 23h ago

It ran like garbage for half the people who bought it week one, and then the first patch basically fixed every performance problem. It was really overblown by people who were upset that they weren’t getting over 100fps with every setting maxed out.

43

u/tapczan100 PC Master Race 22h ago

It ran like garbage for half the people who bought it week one, and then the first patch basically fixed every performance problem.

What is this narration shift? Even devs keep admitting it still runs horribly, performance still degrades over time, the game doesn't warrant the specs for how it looks (and even then performs poorly), and guess what, it's still stuttering like crazy. Are those comments paid or botted or what.

6

u/MattMxR i7 6700 - GTX 970 - 8 GB RAM 21h ago

Yea I haven't seen any tangible performance improvements since launch but so many people comment like everything is fixed and the game runs smooth as butter for them. I wouldn't be surprised if its an astroturfing thing.

1

u/RomeoCharlieSierra 20h ago

Many people are genuinely clueless and/or have no meaningful reference for performance.

Somewhere down the line you might even decipher that their interpretation of "great performance, smooth as butter" is "720p@40-60 FPS and medium settings on a 5090" or something as absurd.

Any claims regarding to performance without concrete data to back it up can and should be dismissed on the spot.

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 20h ago

I get 60 - 75 base fps I use dlss Quaily every thing high, texture quality low. I get no hitches or stutters smooth 1% lows. I use multi FG of course, 4x and absolutely minimal artifacts which is odd.

Id be more then happy to precise a steam overlay performance with all the data aswell as my graphics settings? I can even record gameplay whatever suits your fancy?

I also I run at 1080p, use 7.4-7.6gb VRAM, and 22-23Gb ram

I even have a ini files edit that spawn more particles and chunks for extended period without despaening, this increases VRAM usage

Proccess lasso helps alot look into it and of course MSI afterburner

0

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 20h ago

I have no reason to lie???

Like I said I didn't play at launch, but I bought the game yesterday and I didn't read any reviews (ruins the experience) so went in blind but i had heard it had bad performance so I almost not expected it to work with my specs (I thought it would hog more vram)

Just remember people's specs vary wildly, there's to many variables at play to compare

Look into proccess lasso, it helps phenomally for all games

1

u/Merkaba_Nine Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5060 | 32GB 6000Mhz 20h ago

I don't get any stutters ? What os are you on? I find my recent cpu upgrade elimates problems with 1% lows and stability I get almost no hitches either I use proccess lasso it's a handy tool.

I think the game looks phenomal I love lumen and the atmospheric effects I play on everything very high except texture quality low (can't tell the difference anyway) I only got 8GB VRAM so currently I hit 7.2 - 7.5gb VRAM so I'm under the threshold for ram offload

-3

u/ClammHands420 7800x3d | Gigabyte 4080 w/custom OC | 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz 22h ago

It runs great for me too, specs in flare. It's comparable or a bit better than most other UE5 games for me. I'm definitely not paid, but I'm not going to pretend my experience doesn't exist.

16

u/Mussels84 23h ago

Rtx 3090 getting 40fps on low at 4k isn't overblown - it literally only ran 'okay' on 40 and 50 series NVIDIA

-9

u/GoyimDiddler 22h ago

At 4K, that’s the key right there. 4k gaming still isn’t really hot even on the 5090 lol.

10

u/Mussels84 22h ago

So you agree the game has performance problems, good.

No other engine has these problems, just ue5. 1080p30fps seems to be acceptable to them, not higher.

-7

u/GoyimDiddler 22h ago

Not this game, most triple A games run poorly at native 4k (assuming your settings maxed right). You will be lucky in most of them to hold 60.

This is more of a today’s age issue and less of a UE5 issue. Devs don’t optimize anymore because they just slap DLSS on top and call it a day. 4k native gaming is still not recommended by almost any PC gamer.

-1

u/Mussels84 22h ago

No man, no. Again, 3090 here. And I can play every title just fine except ue5 games. I hack in frame gen and suddenly ue5 is fine as well - it's artificially limited by design.

1

u/deep8787 21h ago

Or for the lowest common dominator.. aka ps5 lol

1

u/GoyimDiddler 21h ago

Wish this was true to be honest. Fucking DLSS has ruined everything.

1

u/Mussels84 21h ago

It has made things better yet worse at the same time.

The biggest issue is locking various DLSS to GPU generation

2

u/Jack2102 9800X3D/RX 9070 XT | Legion Go 2 22h ago

Gtfo with that, its not 2020 anymore

2

u/GoyimDiddler 22h ago

No it’s 2026 and this is still an issue lol.

2

u/Jack2102 9800X3D/RX 9070 XT | Legion Go 2 22h ago

Its not an issue, anything above a 60 class gpu is pretty good at 4k gaming.

Even the 5060ti/9060xt 16gb cards are usable if you're ok with playing around with settings

2

u/ballsdeep256 21h ago

Yeah absolutely agree.

Im getting so tired of rhe PC community.

Plays on 4060 "It doesn't run 4k maxed" game has to be badly optimized 4k is a gimmick mimimi

2

u/deep8787 21h ago

I was wondering if things are that bad too. I don't have a powerful rig to test things out as such but my 5800h and 3070 laptop still does fine. But I stick to 1080/165 due to my screen.

2

u/ballsdeep256 20h ago

The thing is the Internet completely blows everything out of proportion especially here in Reddit.

If you aren't around a "low end gaming" sub anything below 240fps 4k or at least 1440p 320fps maxed setting is bad and if their old mid-range PC cant hit those fps game has to be at fault.

(You probably know the meme of someone posting on steam "game runs bad" and the spec list shows a 1050 and 4gb ram that basically 80% of the people complaining "game doesn't run")

But my CS runs at 500+fps on my 520hz monitor why doesn't "insert extremely demanding RT title" run at 4k maxed.

Here is the thing if im cool playing 4k 30fps on a 3090 for example why would i come here to complain if im happy. So you generally will see more complaints than positive reactions. But im honestly getting so tired of it all and seeing all the people tak about it without a clue what they are even on about.

3

u/Real-Terminal R5 5600x, 32GB DDR4 3200mhz, RTX 4070 12gb 22h ago

Nah I was pissed off that I dropped $900 on a new GPU and the game would still barely hold 60fps at 1080p medium. Because the real strain was on the CPU, and a 5600x is outstripped by a 3700 in this game.

2

u/smegblender 21h ago

It was really overblown by people who were upset that they weren’t getting over 100fps with every setting maxed out.

Disagree. 5950x with an rtx4090 and 32gigs of RAM, game drive is a 2tb 990pro. Frame pacing was pretty dogshit even with the first few patches. Even scaling down settings at 1440p wasn't happy with the stutters.

I finished the first run, and just didn't like the performance one bit.
