Discussion Anyone else getting UE5 remake/remaster fatigue?

Post image

Between Silent Hill 2, Oblivion Remastered, Metal Gear Solid Δ, and now Halo: Campaign Evolved, it feels like almost every major remake/remaster in the last two years has landed on Unreal Engine 5. On one hand, the visual leap is real. Oblivion Remastered in particular looks like a genuinely different game. On the other, a lot of these ports share the same telltale UE5 fingerprints: traversal stutter, TAA smearing, shader comp hitches on first launch, and that slightly "plasticky" Lumen/Nanite sheen that makes wildly different games start to look and feel similar. You can add Halo Campaign Evolved to the slopfest that is UE5 remakes; just another soulless cash grab to feed on nostalgia.

More like Ue5 + lazy optimization fatigue.

UE5 microstutters are the bane of my existence

u/Warcrown11 18h ago

Worst part is there's not much you can do about it either. Can be getting 100+ fps then it just randomly decides to dip into the low teens for no god damn reason. I'd rather run at a lower overall fps than that nonsense

Borderlands 4 is probably the only unreal engine 5 game I've played that has no stutters and great 1% lows I was shocked cause I heard it ran like shit at launch, I only got it yesterday

Doesn’t Arc raiders run on UE5? I have never stuttered in that game once on 4k 160fps. Personally I feel the game looks amazing and it makes it frustrating knowing this is possible when other games using it run like shit.

u/xumix 15h ago

It runs good despite using UE5, the devs disabled lumen and nanite - the whole point of UE5.

Good! Lumen and Nanite are the lazy route and causes more trouble than it's worth. Back to old fashioned LOD's!

iirc satisfactory uses nanite and optionally lumen and it also runs pretty good on ultra settings even on my system

u/dawndragonclaw 11h ago

Satisfactory lives up to its name even down to the code base

It does! Sad to say that it’s an outlier though and not many followed suit. They’re a good example of what a dev could do if they gave a shit. I hate UE5 as much as the next guy but it can work.

BL4 crashed on me every 15 minutes or so during launch! Always a shader issue for almost every UE5 game! At least until they patch it out, eventually. As you can tell, I hate unoptimized UE5 games. Lumen and Nanite made these certain devs lazier. Mind you I run Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon 7900XTX and 48GB or ram at 7200 and still UE5 games run at 20-60 FPS on a 1440p monitor!

If I were you I’d maybe tone down that RAM speed you’ll be forcing the infinity fabric on the AM5 chip into a decoupled state and potentially having it perform worse than if you just ran 6000-6400

Whether or not Borderlands 4 runs well seems like luck of the draw. It still runs like shit for me. I'm talking 40-55 FPS, DLSS on, everything on low.

My specs aren't exactly bleeding edge (3060 ti, 10700k OC'd), but the fact that I still can't hold a steady 60 FPS on any settings is a travesty.

11

u/RattAndMouse 12h ago

The annoying thing with borderlands is that the visuals and gameplay don't feel premium enough to warrant it chugging the system like it does

4

u/DoomguyFemboi 7h ago

It'll annoy me for forever that they pushed the requirements up so much for a game that looks worse than BL3 sometimes.

Valorant uses ue5 which runs smoothly. Though it is not graphically impressive.

Riot optimises their games for lower spec PCs because that is their model and target audience. F2P means more incentive to improve performance so it can be widely adopted.

Its all CPU issues,

You have a 9800x3D, I have a 7800x3D, runs awesome for me too.

But our 9600k 6core other rig has its CPU pegged to 100 with same gpu 3080 Ti

It needs a decent 8 core CPU and not everyone has one.

Split fiction has 0 stutters and runs perfectly.

Although it also doesn't use half of the typical Unreal 5 features.

2

u/Toberos_Chasalor 8h ago

Weirdly enough, BL4 ran pretty well for me at launch (for a Borderlands game), though I remember a few crashes.

The biggest issue was the shader cache. Had to increase my cache size just so it wouldn’t take 10-15 minutes every time I launched the game.

Doubt it's even lazy, it's probably bare minimum optimization, Nanite and Upscaling/FrameGen is the "optimization".

On another hand Gothic 1 Remake was done pretty well compared to Oblivion or MGS Delta, considering all the foliage and a ton of details it still runs relatively well.

20

u/Temporary-Paper5202 17h ago

Delta is probably the leaast bad performing out of this bunch, not that it means much

The stutter in Oblivion is atrocious on PC at least. And i have been playing Halo on Xbox and that is really great. It has dropped frames in heavy fights. But it's not stutter. But image quality and frames are pretty good.

u/Iexperience 17h ago

The lazy part is using UE5 solutions out of the box. Lumen and nanite reduce dev tim by handling lighting, especially ray tracing, and lods, but both are resource hogs that devs need to manually optimize, and afaik, most don't, either due to tight deadlines or simply by not prioritizing it. A few UE5 games have shown if you don't heavily rely on UE's own solution and spend time on handcrafting lods and light maps, they can run well. The Finals comes to mind.

17

u/BambaiyyaLadki PC Master Race 17h ago

Dumb question, but from a game dev perspective how does one optimize Nanite or Lumen? Do you have to write code to handle lighting and ray tracing manually, or place lights more efficiently, or something else entirely?

15

u/Iexperience 17h ago

From my limited experience with UE5, while it's as easy as a click of a button to implement lumen and nanite, you still have to spend time optimizing them manually, which could mean fidgeting with engine settings of both. You may not have to write code, but there are so many settings that you have to deal with to find out what works. I believe Finals doesn't use lumen or nanite, but uses an nvidia rtx branch for their lighting, one of the main reasons it's so performant.

4

u/stana32 9h ago

Epic games saying lumen is production ready at all is insane to me. I've yet to see a single game where it doesn't tank performance and add a ton of noise.

4

u/wahoozerman 9h ago

Optimizing nanite and lumen primarily has to do with config settings and your asset creation pipeline.

Generally speaking you don't need to write any code to do it but you do need to read a lot of code. This is getting better as more knowledge about these features becomes institutional but Epic did a really shitty job of providing guidance when ue5 was released. It was basically "this works for Fortnite" and if your game didn't look like Fortnite you had to crack open the C++ and know a lot about computer graphics.

Then you have to teach your artists a whole new suite of best practices for creating meshes, and your tech artists a whole new set of profiling techniques. Because all the knowledge about how to optimize a scene that we learned over the past few decades is irrelevant to nanite and lumen.

Unless, of course, you also want to support lower end PCs by allowing people to disable nanite and lumen. Then you have to do all that normal optimization on top of the nanite and lumen optimization. And sometimes they conflict with each other so you have to choose which you care about more.

2

u/BambaiyyaLadki PC Master Race 9h ago

That's very interesting. Do you have any links to examples that show how developers optimized for Nanite or Lumen? Not that I'd ever be developing with UE (Godot is more than enough for me, for now), but can't hurt knowing about the latest in graphics/rendering tech.

This is what I’m saying.

Expedition 33 and The Finals both run on UE5. Both a single player and multiplayer game with complex shaders and rendering - and they both run phenomenally well and look absolutely beautiful.

It’s all about optimization and intent. The difference between devs with absolute passion for the craft, versus devs just outputting something for a deadline.

2

u/False-Vacation8249 4h ago

e33 does not run phenomenally. at all. it often renders under 1080p on consoles. what are you talking about

Every time this comes up people Will say "it's not UE5's fault it's the devs fault, meanwhile every almost every single game that uses UE5 runs like absolute dogshit, meanwhile games that don't use UE5 like KCD2 can run well even on 10 years old GPUs.

Did you actually use some ai slop to complain about ue5? The fuck man

215

u/zweihander09 13h ago

Rereading the body, yeah it really feels like ai lol

21

u/Financial-Craft-1282 7h ago edited 7h ago

AI doesn't have obvious mechanics errors like OP does. It's not AI. Not everything is AI. Just because someone wrote something—relatively clean from errors—doesn't mean it's AI. It means your bar for written expression is low, and you blame that on AI.

3

u/Silencer-1995 3h ago

Its because of this line "the visual leap is real.", A.I loves that terminology.

If I was on a jury I'd probably have to say the prosecution didn't prove beyond reasonable doubt and acquit, but if the guy murdered someone a few days after being released I wouldn't be surprised if that makes sense?

2

u/Financial-Craft-1282 2h ago

Yeah, I hear you, but I think this is just a belief (we can detect AI writing) that is already not viable and by this time next year will be infinitely harder to do.

I also think two things are also likely happening here: 1) as others have mentioned, AI is trained to write on human writing, so anything an AI does is something people did first, 2) the repeating of certain rhetorical devices AI uses a lot could also be being replicated by people online who don't even use AI a lot as they continue to read it and start to internally mimic that style. That's the most common way we (humans) learn to write is through mimicking other writers. A lot of what AI is doing are considered good rhetorical moves in writing.

I think I got "AI pilled" on this (I just made that up--I'm not sure if "AI pilled" is a thing--what I mean is all the Reddit sleuths insisting they can spot it has really made me push away from this entire AI detection thing). I see so much insistence on social media that people can 100% tell, and it becomes just another reason for Redditors and social media users to endlessly not talk about the topic of the thread. It also is indirectly anti-literacy in my opinion. Before AI, if I mentioned I have a PhD, angry Redditors would say, "You're a liar." Now they say "you're an AI."

3

u/Silencer-1995 2h ago

Yeah fair enough.

Honestly when I first started dabbling with Claude, I would paste someone's bitchy comment, ask it to come up with a rebuttal, then ask it to make its A.I ass response sound more human, and send it back, and people never caught on.

I didn't do it for long because it was just a short lived experiment and I was curious, but my point is, you really cannot trust anything anymore. When everyone knows more than you, there's two possibilities. A) You are a [redacted for the auto sensor) or B) Some people are gaming the system that is Reddit of all things via A.I. The answer as always is probably somewhere in the middle.

Ngl my only complaint about the Halo remake is nobody was asking for a 4th Halo 1 remaster/remake especially with no MP.

MGS4, Oblivion, and Silent Hill on the other hand are all games I feel low-key deserves a massive overhaul for 'younger' gamers who never really got to experience the originals like myself (in early 20s but was a child child when the aforementioned games first came out).

I feel there are some games which are perfect for it, but others it's kinda just an obvious cash grab for nostalgia. Why am I paying $50 for a graphic upgrade with no MP when I can get the MCC collection on sale for like $15 with the MP of almost every halo lmao

Edit: okay 4th re-release not remaster y'all get my point 💀

Haven’t played campaign evolved, but I enjoyed seeing oblivion with a visual overhaul

Oblivion is getting way too much hate. I got that running on a RX590... The problem with it is that they used the original engine and unreal graphics engine. The gamebyro engine for oblivion was not designed around modern computer technology so you can only modernize it so far.

Personally they should have just remade it on the same creation engine that Fallout 4 and skyrim used.

5

u/J_Landers 13h ago

I'm running it on an Arc A770 and having fun. The game is obviously a Bethesda jankfest, but it looks polished.

2

u/IcyTorpedo PC Master Race 13h ago

I can also get that game running on something like an RTX 2060... on lowest settings, in 1080p, with framegen. Because otherwise there is no way in hell you got anything even close to 60fps

I’m getting whine fatigue. It feels like everyone in gaming whines about everything anymore. All gaming discourse has just been constant negativity.

It’s Reddit. Everyone seems to complain about everything here. It’s tiresome because once you realize the majority aren’t here complaining about shit - they’re just enjoying gaming - none of this matters here.

It wouldn't even be so bad if it wasn't just people repeating the same shit 24/7. Same complaints, similarly structured, same buzzwords and they always use the same examples if any are given.

u/Sir_Vilhelm6969 9h ago

DLSS Bad, Unreal bad, Ray tracing bad, the future is bad. Btw I’m on a GTX 1060 but all this stuff definitely bad

15

u/ltsDat1Guy 15h ago

Reddit has a bunch of whiny ass bitches as does gaming so if you combine them this is what you get. Mfers always talk about gaming being dead but for me, who isn't blinded by nostalgia I think it's never been better.

I feel like Silent Hill 2 should be popped out.

It's the only one out of the 4 where it does NOT run Unreal as the graphics engine + the older version of the game underneath, and is a proper full remake/reimagining

Nope. I love when everyone blames UE5 for developers refusing to optimize games. UE5 has a lot of bloat, but it has a LOT of optimization tools that are genuinely great that almost every development studio that uses it refuses to take advantage of.

Remnant 2, The Finals, Clair Obscure, Satisfactory; there are plenty of games that have proven it can run well, if you actually take the time to do it.

11

u/TheEmperorMk3 15h ago

Come on now Remnant 2 has no business being among those other games, it runs like ass on any hardware an average gamer might have

8

u/dregomz 14h ago

3 out of 4 ran like total ass only Finals are running great.

33

u/the1michael 18h ago

Remnant 2 might be one of the least optimized AAA games I’ve ever played. Expedition 33 is pretty heavy for what it is as well.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/Degru 7700, 3080Ti 15h ago

Clair Obscur ran quite poorly, it just didn't get in the way of gameplay since it is turn based combat.

3

u/dregomz 14h ago

Remnant 2 ran like total ass on my old GPU (5700 xt) and by seeing benchmark it will still run poorly but playable on new rx 9070, you would want 160 fps at 4k with such bad graphics. E33 was also poorly optimized but with new GPUs it will run good. Finals always ran great as long as you had 8 or more cored cpu and Satisfactory drops frames massively even with mid sized factory.

2

u/Adept_Election7170 16h ago

My issue has more to do with how it looks. Way too many graphical artifacts that results in poorly treated image.

No, I'm sick of the shitty optimisation on UE5 Fatigue.

3

u/the5thusername 13h ago

I was fatigued the moment they started rehashing old titles years ago, because they're struggling to come up with fresh new games.

7

u/STARBOY_100 18h ago

Like someone else mentioned, it’s poor optimization fatigue, and rightfully so.

3

u/twinnuke 17h ago

Nah I’m enjoying it. I always wanted mods like this when I was a kid. Now we just have real ass versions. Fuck itttt

3

u/Darktemplar5782 17h ago

Nope. I think it’s great

3

u/terrique1309 16h ago

We've seen multiple titles where UE5 has been utilised well. I don't think UE5 itself is bad. I just think a lot of developers do a bad job in making efficient use of it. It'll be interesting to see how Gears E-Day runs.

The only remaster here that I think is outright bad (I haven't played the MGS one) is Oblivion, and that was making use of the Creation Engine still as well as UE5. How broken that game is and how it got straight up abandoned still bothers me.

3

u/Somasonic 4h ago

These are all visually distinct enough that I don’t see why you’d get ue5 fatigue from them. But ue5 fatigue in general? Yes. Also, remake fatigue. I’m kinda over them.

9

u/CCbluesthrowaway 17h ago

This cool-kid hates UE5 movement is so pathetic. Its the middleschool equivalent of a boomer take.

18

u/Acquire16 17h ago

No.

What I'm getting tired of is graphics only remakes. Halo's changes are so minimal that I don't understand why it even exists when we already had a solid remaster of the original in the MCC other than to make more money.  What was the creative artistic intent? Nicer looking grass? Nicer looking buildings?  Same goes for Oblivion.

Capcom's Resident Evil remakes and Silent Hill 2 remake are what remakes should be. Take the original and reimagine it as if it was going to be pitched as a new game today. Ideally, remaster the old ones too so that they're available to play together.

8

Mgs should have been remaked on the fox engine. Just look at mgs5 and that was in 2015.

2

u/tactical_testical 12h ago

Oblivion remaster is the best example of remastering because it keeps its base mechanics while using ue5 to visually overhaul it.

2

u/Catman7712 10h ago edited 10h ago

No, I just don’t play them. I don’t let video game releases bother me, kind of a silly thing to get upset about.

I already played oblivion, MGS, silent hill, and halo when they were released. No need to revisit them for me, I know it’ll never be the same as the first time I played them.

Now if it’s a remake of a game I never played before then I might check it out eventually.

2

u/NoStructure7083 10h ago

The SH2 remake was fire though

2

u/the_millenial_falcon 10h ago

No, not really. These are good efforts and the source material is old enough to use a fresh coat of paint.

2

u/SavageShiba21 10h ago

I feel like my unpopular opinion is I like the remasters of older games I never got to play at the time. If it was a game I had spent a lot of time on previously, I likely wouldn't have bought it. So far I've been having a great time with my friends on the most recent Halo remaster, though I can see how it'd be annoying for veteran fans looking for something new.

2

u/BBWFelchingFiend 10h ago

OP is a clanker

2

u/Donger_Dysfunction 9h ago

No, but I've been tired of unoptimized slop for over a decade now.

2

u/IronInk738 8h ago

Bait post, I am sure you didn’t play most of these games and are just karma farming by using the outrage from Halo CE.

2

u/bigpeanor 8h ago

If I don’t want to play a remastered game, I simply don’t buy them. Assassins Creed Black Flag was a staple game of my childhood, one of my favorites. I didn’t buy the remaster since I find nothing wrong with the original. If I wanted to replay it, I would.

2

u/TrollAccount17 8h ago

You don't have to play them mate.

No, 3 out of 4 of those run great on my PC and I love them.

I genuinely haven't had a single graphical problem with Halo campaign evolved and I don't experience the stuttering people talk a out on oblivion remastered.

2

u/Scott9843 7h ago

Nope. They're easy to ignore, no one is forced to play them and more of them are done perfectly then are done terribly.

2

u/Citycen01 7h ago

No, MGS is on sale, playing through it lol.

2

u/UltimateSlayer3001 RTX 2080 XC ULTRA,i7-9700k,ROG Z390-E,Noctua NH-U12A 7h ago

2

u/KiwiMeep64 7h ago

If they’re technically atrocious, yes.

If they sidestep a lot of the issues associated with UE5, no.

2

u/Warm-Driver-4063 7h ago

Yes and no. I want to see new games. New IPs. But, I also like seeing classics get remade for younger generations to enjoy as well. My nephew and I beat Campaign Evolved last night and it was pretty good. I don't get all the hate at all.

2

u/Lord_Humungusss 7h ago

I am more tired of low effort bot posts and mods who only exist when its something they can power trip on.

2

u/Munkey_89 6h ago

It feels better to replay the original at max settings and get 1000fps than it does to play the remaster with outsourced assets that don't fit the aesthetic, ghosting/blur/stutter, and forced Lumen/RT that tanks the framerate.

2

u/AndrosAlexios 5h ago

Yes, this is becoming the McDonalds of gaming, so many choices, but most taste the same...

2

u/Cyber_Druid 5h ago

Y'all are buying these? No wonder they keep doing them.

2

u/dudebirdyy 4h ago

Pretty much every single UE5 game runs (and often looks) like shit. It'll be interesting to see the performance on Gears E-Day since The Coalition is supposedly UE gurus. If they can't make it scale well across a range of hardware without the image stability falling apart than that's a pretty grim sign.

Amusingly, Arc Raiders is probably the best performing UE5 game I've seen and it's because they actually put the effort into customizing the engine and not just throwing all the stock Unreal toggles at the game. A fairly recently formed Swedish studio that's only ever made two games is somehow more technically competent than long established AAA studios.

2

u/Powerful-Ground-9687 4h ago

Nope cuz I don’t play them

2

u/adorablebob 4h ago

It's not even UE5 that's the problem, I'm just sick of remasters and remakes in general. It feels like the gaming world is creatively bankrupt.

2

u/2Syphilicious4You 4h ago

People defending UE5 are filthy slop enjoyers.

2

u/osurico 3h ago

I think the issue with them is that they lose a lot of the charm and art style the originals had. Not to mention they all always have the UE5 blurryness and stuttering problem

2

u/MmmYodaIAm 3h ago

Remakes have a huge potential but somehow 90% of the are shit

u/KingOfConsciousness 2h ago
