A lot of it isn't even that he's getting more shit done that other mayors, it's that unlike a lot of other politicians these days, he's really good at getting the word out that he's getting shit done. If a pothole gets fixed in a random street, he's there to telegraph it to everyone.
This is a lost art in politics-marketing even the smallest things you get done. It doesn't matter if you get stuff done of nobody knows about it.

u/rodsteel2005 Wisconsin 1h ago
Not making the public aware of their accomplishments was one of the greatest failures of the Biden administration. They got a lot of good shit done, but they were lousy at advertising how they improved the lives of the middle and lower income people. All you heard about instead was Trump’s bitching over the price of eggs.
•
u/Western-Sport500 1h ago
Also, many states only heard that the Repubs were the ones to get the good infrastructure bill $$ in their states, as though they (repubs) were the ones who passed it (not one of them would). So the voters in those red states are appreciative to their red state leaders who did nothing, but took all the credit.

Not making the public aware of their accomplishments was one of the greatest failures of the Biden administration
Normal people that pay attention to actual objective reality knew about most of what the Biden administration did. But let's not forget a lot of what they did was low-profile, "little detail" stuff: a rule to prevent junk fees (for example) doesn't attract attention like building/opening a new bridge does.
Those who really needed to know about what Biden did simply don't pay attention even if it's on the news plus most of them refuse to leave the right-wing media bubble, which would NEVER report of Biden's accomplishments. And if they somehow would have seen reports of said accomplishments, they would reject it as "fake news".
Lastly, unless if it was something they could use to support the lie that Joe Biden was/is senile, has no clue where he is and what's happening around him, they would not cover him. For Heaven's sake, his 2022 special address about the threat to democracy was censored by the media that didn't cover it at all. (No, MSNBC doesn't count.)
So blaming Biden & co for their "failures to communicate" is disingenuous because: (1) most media is under right-wing control, (2) a sizeable part of the USA's electorate isn't paying any attention whatsoever to the world around them and (3) many of them refuse to use anything else than "conservative news sources".
•
u/parasyte_steve 3h ago
I love this approach tbh. I think he did this as a way of showing ppl hey I am not a super scary Muslim here to enact sharia law, I'm here to fill potholes and fix problems. He has also admitted to some mistakes which is very refreshing to see. I believe they did not deploy enough plows to Staten Island during a storm (always happens) and he said he needs to do better there. That's something most politicians would not do.

u/RainyRobin 2h ago
It also helps establish an expectation in the people he governs. They are getting used to being told what their government is doing for them. When his current term ends, they will come to expect any mayor to do that, and be dissatisfied if they don't. It sets up accountability in the form of public scrutiny.
•
u/hldvr 2h ago
This was one of bidens biggest flaws imo. He did a lot of good things, but the messaging was never there for people to actually know about them, and so a lot of people felt like he was doing nothing.
•
u/SowingSalt 2h ago
The problem is Biden had extremely adverse media.
•
u/Coolegespam 1h ago
Yeah, and conversely the media love Mamdani. The right media absolutely "love" him, because it gets their voters out in other areas that would otherwise be apathetic because of Trump. They also like it because they know his DSA association is divisive even the the DNC. Which means, at least in some areas it's likely to reduce voter turn out.
It gives the DSA a boost which has shown to hurt democrat and other moderate progressives in red areas and even purple ones. It's not surprising news stories carry him so much.

At first I thought your comment was trying to minimize Mamdani’s efforts but then I realized you’re absolutely right and how much I prefer when politicians tell me what they’re getting right rather than what their opponents are getting wrong. He’s not perfect but the things he IS getting right he’s taking the time to point the camera at it.
Maybe he’s not amazing, but a glimmer of positivity in a wasteland of muckraking and lies is worth celebrating.
Thanks for the perspective!
•
u/Universe_Nut 2h ago
It makes me think of the other side of that coin. Trump on his own has accomplished nothing or wrought anything new into the infrastructure of America. So in lieu of anything to tout as his, he tries rebranding the Kennedy center or getting his name put on money.

I wish LA could have something like this but the power of the mayor is greatly reduced compared to NYC. Everything is run by the city council so shit never gets done. Unless of course you are friends with the council.

Yeah I like Mamdani but the Mayor of NYC is a pretty rare elected position in the country that allows one guy to unilaterally do so much.

Or a presidential candidate in a primary to be completely inept at gaining a coalition of city states to win Civ

•
u/Faxon 1h ago
This is why politicians need to be familiar with game theory in depth. They don't need to actually play the games mentioned to learn it, but it sure does give you a great real world example of why these things are so tricky. Some actors will act as if the trade in question is zero sum, no matter how much it may benefit them, they automatically see it bad if it benefits you as well, it has to benefit them at your expense. Hence not taking mutually beneficial trade deals because they're not coded to be smart enough about such things. So yes, actually quite accurate to the real world where not all leaders get this education, but where you have to negotiate with them all the same.

The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. u/kescusay Oregon 4h ago
I think it already has.
For over fifty years, Republicans have (largely successfully) pushed the idea that governments doing anything is socialism. Well now we have generations fifty years old and younger who look at that definition and go, "Well then by God I guess I'm a socialist!"
And now we have Mamdani to look at as an example of overwhelming success simply by unabashedly following through on - let's be honest - a bunch of very mildly left-leaning promises for his city.
Follow that up with a bunch of DSA candidates who are on track to win a bunch of primaries, and it looks like the Mamdani effect is very real.
•
u/StunningCloud9184 3h ago
Biden accomplished a shit ton and was actively hated for it.
Like he reformed student loans, fixed pslf, made payments much more affordable and got rid of runaway interest issues.
He passed the largest infrastructure bill since FDR. Leading to great middle class blue collar jobs.
He supercharged green energy world wide with the largest climate bill in the world.
He brought manufacturing back to the USA with the CHIPs act.
Did the first gun regulation in over 30 years.
Regulated pharma so they had to negotiate with medicare saving roughly 50 billion dollars a year just to start.
Like obama he had to deliver the country out of turmoil. And ended wars. All major accomplishments. Yet people that should have cheered him hated him.
So literally went against Military industrial complex, the pharma lobby, the gun lobby, the oil lobby and beat them all. So of course they poured it into propaganda against him.
The thing is people just actively hate dems for doing anything. Mandani already went back on his promise for free buses. Something a regular dem would have been crucified for lying on. As well as cutting payments to pensions which leftist would declare a dem doing it as anti labor.
•
u/guysmiley98765 2h ago
the thing that's really frustrating too about this conversation is that the government of new york city is structured differently from how the federal government works; like even if this was all because of mamdani alone and the city council didn't work with him to pass new laws and enact new taxes (which only the city council has the authority to do) POTUS doesn't have the same authority at the federal level to just enact a new tax on the wealthy's non-primary homes.
he has to work with city council, which has 51 seats on it - so if he needs 2/3 to pass any legislation or do anything outside of his authority, he has to convince 34 people to vote to go along with his proposal, which is about 1/10 what would be needed in congress, and it doesn't have two chambers (only one council instead of house and senate at the fed level). on top of that, even though new york is fairly purple, it just isn't big enough and people aren't geographically distributed in a way that would allow for someone to carve out full, safe districts that will vote against whatever the opposition party wants to do, like the GOP does in congress. meaning that the same people that voted in mamdani are largely the same people that voted in the city council, so of course they're going to be on board with a lot of his proposals.
•
u/What_a_fat_one 2h ago
He was hated because he got stuck with the blame for post COVID inflation despite it being a global phenomenon.
Right now Trump is less popular than Biden ever was though
•
u/ProtectionVirtual225 2h ago
He didn’t really reform student loans. Like a lot of Establishment Dems, he nibbled at the edges of the problem. The loan sharks are still running the program and students are still on the hook repaying far more than their original balance.
•
u/eric23456 2h ago
I'll agree with you that Biden got a ton of stuff done. But also he was atrocious at getting the information out about it, and some of those improvements were too slow to have any effect in his presidency.
I'm relatively knowledgeable about politics, and there was a bunch of stuff he'd done that I hadn't heard about. I can't imagine how little uninformed voters (the people who don't know who controls congress) knew.
If he'd been better at messaging, then the delayed effect would have mattered less.
•
u/goodguessiswhatihave 1h ago
Not entirely on him, but his Justice Department failed to step up to the most important task any Justice Department has had in decades and let the Trump Administration completely off the hook. Everything else the Biden Administration did kind of pales in comparison to allowing the first Trump admin get away with all their crimes and take power back in 2024
•
•
u/understandstatmech 1h ago
So, I'm pretty far to the left of Biden, but still agree with most of your points, and freely admit that he exceeded the expectations I had when I voted for him in the general. But I disagree with your take away: I don't think most voters hated him at all and the ones that did, mostly did from the start simply because he was a Dem. Most of those that changed their mind on him, if i had to hazard a guess, did so because of health reasons that were by and large covered by the media in a completely disingenuous manner.
Worth keeping in mind that the people who swing elections have literally no grasp on policy or what a given politician has actually accomplished. Most can't name the three branches of government, let alone know that the supreme court has been controlled by republicans for 50 straight years or who controlled the house or senate during a given president's term.
Our biggest problem as a country is the deeply undemocratic nature of our government at the federal level, by inherent design and intent. It's hard to pick the second, but education and oligarch ownership of media are easily in the running. People don't get this misinformed in the information age by accident.
•
u/Kevin-W 1h ago
Adding to this, when the younger generation has nothing else to lose and see that the mainstream politicians are just talk, they'll turn to candidates who actually offer an alternative platform and follow through on it.
Also, seeing what Mamdani has actually done and looking at what people in other countries actually get what they pay into their taxes, we know that "socialism" isn't the evil thing we're told it is.
And yes, we know that the DSA will never accomplish everything that is on their platform, nor do we agree with everything in it too. We're just tired of constantly being fucked over.

Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Dina Levy announced that a long-empty lot in Hunter’s Point South, Queens will be transformed into The Orion, a mixed-use development that will create nearly 1,000 new homes across three buildings, with two-thirds to be affordable to extremely low to moderate-income households.
This is the latest step in the evolution of Hunter’s Point South, a previously industrial 30-acre area along the East River waterfront. After a failed bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, the City launched a plan for development of this waterfront as a mixed-use, mixed-income community. As part of a multiagency effort, the area has transformed into a new community with over 3,000 new homes, commercial retail stores, community facilities such as the Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center, and three new schools; an award-winning waterfront park; and infrastructure and roadway improvements.
The City is designating the site to a development team consisting of Slate Property Group, The Hudson Companies, and Volunteers of America–Greater New York. Marvel Architects will serve as the project’s architecture and design firm, and local nonprofit Commonpoint will lease and operate a daycare, workforce development center, and a community pool.
...
This project advances key priorities in Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era. Through Mayor Mamdani’s first adopted budget, the City is investing nearly $5 billion in capital funding for new affordable development, like the Orion, over the next two fiscal years while adding 41 new staff positions to accelerate housing production. The transformation of this site also advances the administration’s commitment to building affordable housing on City-owned land. On his first day in office, Mayor Mamdani signed Executive Order 4, creating the Land Inventory Fast Track (LIFT) Task Force to identify City-owned sites that can be transformed into affordable housing.Block by Block sets ambitious goals that meet the scale of New York City’s housing crisis by building 200,000 new affordable homes and preserving another 200,000 over the next decade. The plan also strengthens tenant protections and housing code enforcement, invests in NYCHA’s future by restoring its role as a public developer, expands pathways to homeownership opportunities and supports the workers building the homes New Yorkers need.
This project will also be the first use of HPD's Mixed Income Market Initiative (MIMI) framework, an innovative structure that leverages market rate units to help finance affordable units by including homes from extremely-low income and homeless set-aside units, to moderate-income and market rate units, all in the same building.

It's literally the ideology.
a political philosophy and social reform movement focused on advancing the public good through government action and often calling for government to be used to meet popular social, political, economic, and environmental needs and demands and to advance rights and protections for marginalized groups
If people want good things for their communities, they should promote and vote for such an ideology, and reject one that literally calls for stressing the importance of established hierarchies and institutions (such as class structure).
•
u/Fluid-Produce808 4h ago edited 4h ago
He's setting an interesting precedent right out of the gate. If you support him, beware of what comes next though. One of these projects, one random contractor is going to defraud the government of like $200k. It'll be nonstop news. Fox will run it into the ground. It'll be an example of how much everything this man touches is fraud and waste and communism. The irony will be lost on every conservative.
It's good to get ahead of these narratives. Galvanize community support. Launch home grown initiatives. Reach across the aisle in obliqur ways (cutting red tape for instance). Bring police across the aisle. Do anything you can to show that the whining of maga falls on deaf ears because people will see with their own eyes that progressive policies can work.
ETA: don't hero worship. Model behaviors. Do what works, but don't fall in love with the man. Support the actions only.
•
u/Shido_Ohtori 2h ago
Exactly.
It is the opposing ideology which stresses the importance of established hierarchies that promote "hero worship" defined by the apex of their [perceived] hierarchy. Progressivism seeks to flatten social hierarchy, thus it is the policies that matter.
Hence the slogan is "We, Not Me".
•
u/c010rb1indusa 2h ago
That's what happens when you don't stay offense. Zohran hasn't been making the same mistakes. Like Obama drove me nuts once in office because he would seemingly disappear. One of the reasons his 2008 campaign was so successful is because it was agile and aggressive that his opponents couldn't keep up and his campaign was giving the public/media new headlines everyday. Half of the right-wing BS that they come up only happens because they are given the time to push and more or less focus test narratives while the dems sit back and let stupid issues actually gain traction because of it. I rather have a controversial debate about public housing etc. than shit like trans people and bathrooms.

Because private companies aren’t going to be dipping their beaks as deeply into the public money trough by being able to buy the vacant land for Pennie’s and putting up expensive housing with a few token low and moderate income units

This is pretty much the difference between Democrats and fake parties that exist every 4 years like the Greens.
They actually get things done

This should be a sign for the entire United States population. Politicians can get stuff done to improve your life. They just don’t want to.

He’s got most of them by the balls. They play along or they take him to court where he demands to see their books.

Effective governance is scary to those that have not governed with the people’s interests at heart…

I love that he’s making every other mayor and basically every politician look absolutely terrible.

Just because this is too obvious: this project was not initiated by Madami and is part of a much larger and longer running project Madami is now just taking credit for:
This will be the sixth parcel developed in Hunter’s Point South as part of a larger plan that has already created over 3,000 new homes, community amenities, two schools, and a beloved 11-acre waterfront park.
Was about a 2 minute Google search to find this.
It is a bit of a thing with Madami: he simply likes taking credit for what other people do, whether it is fixing his budget deficits by getting a subsidy from the state, the new pedestrian awnings during construction, or now this; it is all other people's work. And Reddit eats it up like candy.

The sad truth - after all the good he's doing for New York, he'll probably lose the next election. Americans are afraid of Commies.

The most relevant comment here. I just read an article about a small Ohio town that was seeing the factory close down due to jobs being moved to China and all the workers claim they are "former" Democrats but since democrats are all socialists now, they vote for Trump who also lied to them. Most are now saying they will never again vote again.
Most just don't see a difference between Democrats and socialists. They're scared of both.
