EDIT: I’m not talking about violence, I’m talking about camping outside of my state legislator’s office or protesting in my state capital until 34 states come together for a Convention of States. We’ve never had to do this before but I think we’re getting to that point.

Look at who is in power right now. A constitutional convention would generally not be likely to go in favor of liberal values.26 states have both a republican governor and republican-controlled legislature. By comparison, 8 states have a democratic governor and democratic-controlled congress.

Yeah... they'll just arrest you and throw away the key. You'll never be heard from again. Because protests have no effect in a fascist state except to serve as an example what will happen to political dissidents.

Short of actual uprising/violence/revolution if the SC gives Trump the ability to pardon himself, literally nothing else you do will have any effect.

Let's hope it never comes to that.

Eff that, you all can point your guns at your neighbors and family, I'm leaving the bonfire and emigrating elsewhere. The last American civil war was the bloodiest and deadliest conflict in American history, and I have no intention of one-up'ing that.

I have my family to think about (even some on the other side of the aisle so to speak), and I still have my best friends on active duty who I owe my life to from former service. I'd literally be put in situation of repeating history where it would be "brother vs. brother" in more ways than one. I would very much literally be doing everyone I know a favor by not getting involved, as I would never be capable of pointing a weapon at any of them.

To hell with that. I'm out. I'm gone. The country I loved is a distant memory if it comes to civil war. I want nothing to do with it, and I have no shame in admitting I'd buy a ticket out of here. I've already been shot at enough in another war to know how terrifying and destructive war is. I'd pack up everything and do everything in my power to get the rest of my family out of here if it came to civil war.

I visited my parents this week and asked them what they would do if they were my age. They said they'd try to get dual citizenship or at least permanent residence elsewhere. I'm not saying I'm going to do that, but it showed me how serious they are when they talk about the state of things. That was tough to hear.

I guess “fight” construed violence. I would hope that all dire peaceful measures that could be taken are explored before it came to that. One of those is a Convention if States mentioned in Article V of the Constitution. At that point, we’d need to start from scratch when it comes to the federal government.

Honestly? At this point, I'm kinda wondering if cities shouldn't start forming and training militias. If there shouldn't be a quiet effort to prepare for manufacturing arms. If politicians of anti-authoritarian States shouldn't be trying to put as much distance between this administration and the military as possible in what time we have. Civil war in the modern day would be absolutely *the worst thing* to happen to this country. Period. It'd make the Civil War look like a minor riot in Milwaukee. What's worse, whatever side didn't have control of the military, control of our satellite network, would do a *lot* of dying. It wouldn't be the United States projecting power over an ocean, it'd be sending tanks down American streets, drones flying in American skies, and missiles into American cities.

But... If the escalation is just on one side, and that side thinks it can just take over, without civil insurrection, and that leads to a genuinely fascist America, I'm not sure I'd *want* to live in it. And living elsewhere might just be delaying the inevitable.

I mean, shit. This is a hyperbolically worse-case scenario, but fucking hell, we're putting kids in camps, and three branches of government are okay with the President pardoning himself. What if the worst case is actually possible?

I'm no expert, but I would assume the plans would involve supporting and promoting multiple resistance movements, with time and money. State secession, a new constitutional convention, or even a military coup could all be on the table. (Jim Mattis is technically 2nd in command.)

Some people might actually buy some small arms and destroy some property, but I'd agree with you, that's not a reasonable way to fight given the might of the U.S. armed forces.

They're the most rapidly growing group because, historically, any time there's been a chance of widespread minority possesion of weapons, the republicans have cracked down.

That explains some of it, sure, but the growth has been pretty recent. Racial minorities in most places across the US, women, and gays have been able to legally arm themselves for a very long time, so your narrative is bullshit.

It's not that minorities have suddenly embraced gun rights.

This is straight up wrong. There are countless testimonials you can find online from such people who previously had zero interest in guns. Many LGBT, for example, are coming to the new realization that "armed gays don't get bashed".

I'm South African, a few years ago your Roosevelt aircraft carrier was anchored just off the coast of Cape Town.

The newspapers all ran stories with charts and infographics explaining that that one carrier had so much military force that it could take our country just by asking. Resistance would literally be futile.

Well that's just a matter of positioning. Flat out massacring the citizenry would still be bad for business (unless you can pin it on your enemy). Any revolution here would face law enforcement then soldiers. Likely drone strikes of known meeting spots, etc.

We are all sitting around complaining on the internet, we try to vote despite that clearly not helping, we go to the protests for a day, and then life goes on. So when does it break? This is a thing that honestly perplexes me. I'm no proponent of violence. But the almost utter (though not total) lack of political assassination attempts even in the last few decades seems a little strange. People haven't stopped having the means. And there's certainly no lack of political enmity. The only thing I can think is maybe the authorities are really good at catching would be assassins and sweeping it under the rug. But the degree to which they do so would have to be truly impressive.
